    Kuroe

Kuroe Akaishi / Harugon

The Monster Maiden

"I don't like myself. I'm not cute, I have a bad personality, I'm gloomy, I don't have any good points. The list goes on and on. But when I'm with Minami-kun, I'm able to like myself, just a little. Being called ugly doesn't keep me down, I laugh a lot more, I muster up the courage to try new things, and I can really give it my all."

The protagonist. Kuroe is a young, shy, awkward girl that is secretly plagued by a condition that turns her into a Kaiju, this especially happens when she is in love, which leads her to isolate herself from all her peers, cultivating a reputation as a creepy loner.

When she falls in love with the popular Minami Arata, her transformations become out of control again as the two grow closer.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: As a small child, Kuroe was shunned because of the freaky Partial Transformations she would go through. Even years later when interacting with people unaware of her condition, she still gets shunned because she's a socially awkward loner.
  • Ambiguously Human: It's implied by the egg at their house and her power to turn into a giant monster that Kuroe may not be totally human. It is revealed in Chapter 21 she is actually a kaiju, that has the ability to take on a human appearance.
  • Bioluminescence Is Cool: Harugon's horns and back spikes glow a pinkish-red. This is directly pointed out when the spikes emerge at Destinyland; Arata assumes that they're part of a costume and speculates that they're lit up by LEDs.
  • Color Contrast: Whenever Kuroe Akaishi turns into Harugon, she has mostly blue skin with her horns, claws, spikes, wings, and eyes being a pinkish-red.
  • Compliment Backfire: When Kuroe gets a makeover from Rairi, Manatsu compliments her by saying she looks like Astromons. This would be a pretty weird compliment for anyone, but Kuroe is so sensitive about actually being a Kaiju that being compared to one, even in a positive sense, is enough for her to want to immediately wash off the makeup.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Before her date with Arata at Destinyland, Kuroe thoroughly maps out which rides she wants to go on (no rides that would involve sitting right beside Arata), as well as the locations of bathrooms (where she can hide if she starts transforming) and food kiosks (sweets help her calm down).
  • Creepy Loner Girl: Kuroe starts off as one. Due to her Involuntary Shapeshifting, she avoids interacting with people more than is necessary and wears unappealingly baggy clothes with long sleeves to cover up any Partial Transformation she might undergo. She slowly moves out of this archetype.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Kuroe occasionally sports these, both while she's a normal girl and while she's partially transformed.
  • Cute Monster Girl: While she's not very cute in her Kaiju form, whenever she does a Partial Transformation, the monstrous parts do nothing to detract from how adorable she is, especially when she's flustered. Even when she is a kaiju, her beautiful eyes being retained and the heart-shaped part of her wing still manage to be rather charming.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Kuroe is a black haired Creepy Child named "Black picture" who transforms into a black Kaiju when emotionally distraught. She's not only Not Evil, Just Misunderstood, she's a Stock Shojo Heroine.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: As she undergoes her first transformation into Harugon, Kuroe runs away from Arata and catches her breath at a bridge. She absentmindedly grips one of the railings with a transformed hand, crushing it and falling into the river below.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: When Kuroe partially transforms at Destiny Land, a shocked Arata asks her if she's OK. She reads his expression as disgusted, and immediately rushes off to the bathroom, where she curls up in the stall and starts crying. She sports these while she chants "awful" or "I hate this" to herself.
  • Expressive Hair: Kuroe has two large strands of hair that are shaped like and act like horns. Although it often becomes ambiguous as to whether they're her actual horns (as they grow longer), or are simply made of hair (as they're expressive). If she's particularly shocked or miffed, her ponytails will also fly up into the air.
  • Extreme Doormat: Kuroe starts as one, as she feels that it's not worth sticking up for herself if it means interacting with people long enough for them to see one of her transformations.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: Whenever Kuroe Akaishi transforms into Harugon, her Notzilla form, she is shown to have just four clawed toes. Unlike its inspiration Godzilla, however, the Harugon form still has five fingers.
  • Frying Pan of Doom: Kuroe wields one when confronting what she thinks is a caterpillar Kaiju outside her home looking for a fight. She fearfully drops it the moment the thing twitches — but luckily, it's neither a Kaiju nor is it looking for a fight.
  • Height Angst: She's noticeably short even compared to her female classmates, and she admits to Yoneyama that she's jealous of how tall he is. Downplayed, as she only brought it up that one time (likely to help Yoneyama feel better about being really tall for his age), and considering her other issues it's far from the biggest thing she angsts about.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: This is how Kuroe feels when Arata starts talking to her — to the point that she is initially convinced there's some nefarious reason for it.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: All she wants more than anything is to be able to live as a normal girl. She almost had a Then Let Me Be Evil moment when she truly felt that would never be possible.
  • Interspecies Romance: She's actually a kaiju who can take human form, and she's dating Arata, a full-blooded human.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: Kuroe's transformations are triggered by strong emotion. She tries to get around this by avoiding socialization and public entertainment that might make her emotional... but her affection for Arata makes this increasingly difficult.
  • Living Mood Ring: Parts of Kuroe Akaishi's body transform in various ways, ranging from a scaly reptilian hand to spikes along her spine, whenever she experiences strong emotions. She tries to avoid this by being a loner, but her burgeoning feelings for Arata lead to her emotions kicking into overdrive and her sporadically turning into a Kaiju.
  • Madness Mantra: After her date with Arata goes poorly and she goes through a Partial Transformation in front of him in spite of her efforts throughout the day to avoid that, a distraught Kuroe runs into a bathroom stall where she repeats "I hate this" over and over.
  • Meaningful Appearance: She's initially portrayed with eye obscuring bangs when she's still in her "who needs friends" phase, but as she starts opening up to Arata her eyes are more frequently visible.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kuroe" literally means "black picture" in Japanese. This fits with the dark clothes she wears at the start of the story, her dark hair, and the dark scales she has as Harugon.
  • Metalhead: Kuroe Akaishi is one of these. One of the things she is shown doing when she is friendless and trying to shut out the outside world is listening to loud metal music with headphones on. It's later revealed that she first caught the metal bug from her Honorary Uncle Koutarou Hibino, who brings her metal album CDs as gifts when he visits and takes her to a metal festival.
  • Mighty Roar: Harugon has a distinct, loud roar whenever Kuroe takes that form. At one point when Rinko startles Kuroe in her room, Kuroe even lets out the roar despite being mostly untransformed, frightening the people in their neighborhood who think Harugon has shown up again.
  • Miko: Manatsu thinks Kuroe is this, calling her "Harugon's priestess" and assuming she has some connection to the monster on that basis.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Kuroe shows shades of this whenever she transforms; while she generally avoids seriously harming people, she has trouble keeping herself from breaking stuff. When she transforms during the metal festival, she even comments that her (figurative) heart is becoming like a Kaiju's, and in general has trouble controlling her kaiju-ness.
  • Partial Transformation: Most times when Kuroe transforms, only one aspect of Harugon appears, such as a scaly hand, dorsal spikes, or a tail.
  • Samus Is a Girl: One of the rare examples where the reader knows the truth from the beginning. The public assumes that Harugon is male, unaware that the monster is actually a teenage schoolgirl. This is specifically relevant with Manatsu, who develops a crush on Harugon for "his" monstrous virility. The fact that Minami is the only person outside of Kuroe's family to refer to Harugon as a "she" is an early indicator that he knows Kuroe and Harugon are one in the same.
  • Shapeshifter Baggage: Briefly brought up after Kuroe's first change into Harugon, when Rinko notes how odd it is that she can gain and shed so much mass so quickly.
  • Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing: If Kuroe goes through a Partial Transformation, her transformed bits will make holes in her clothes. This is the reason she wears baggy outfits and long sleeves. If she transforms fully into Harugon, her clothes get totally destroyed, requiring her to improvise an outfit until she can get properly dressed.
  • Super-Strength: Whenever Kuroe transforms, whether it's fully or partially, it always comes with a superhuman amount of strength. While she's effectively The Juggernaut in full-Kaiju form, she's still capable of denting metal with her fists and slapping fully-grown men away with her tail in her partial form.
  • Sweet Tooth: In the very first chapter of the series, Kuroe ogles a picture of gourmet pancakes served at a restaurant called Cafe Serizawa. She's wistful about the fact that she won't get to eat any herself because the place is invitation-only...until Arata shows up with two invitations. When she takes a bite of one pancake, it's the first time she is depicted as genuinely happy.
  • That Was Not a Dream: The first time Kuroe transforms into Harugon, she thinks she's just having a cathartic dream. Her mother tries to maintain this illusion the following morning by turning off the news and coming up with a hasty excuse for why her school uniform feels like brand new (which it is, because the transformation destroyed the original set). Unfortunately, Kuroe turns the news on herself and finds out the truth.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Kuroe briefly feels this way after she transforms in front of Arata at Destinyland and thinks that he was freaked out by this. She's on the cusp of willingly transforming fully into Harugon to destroy the Destinyland castle out of spite, saying "If I'm not allowed to live like a normal girl, then I'll live like a Kaiju." Luckily, Arata shows up and reveals that he was not freaked out by what he assumes is her cosplay of a Destinyland character, which manages to calm her down.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Kuroe sports one after she transforms in front of Arata at Destinyland and runs off to a bathroom.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She appears to enjoy sweets and pancakes.
  • When She Smiles: Kuroe happily enjoying her pancakes seems to be what cemented Arata's love for her.

    Minami

Arata Minami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaijugirl_minami.png
The Kaiju Prince

A popular boy in school. Minami is a people pleaser that finds himself falling for Kuroe when they spend some time alone, finding her fascinating and that he can be himself around her.

  • 15 Minutes of Fame: After being dubbed the "Kaiju Prince," he did his best to try to avoid this as he already dislikes how famous he is around school. However, he realized the longer he tried to hide from the paparazzi the longer it will last. So he starts going on talk shows in hopes that it will burn out faster.
  • Agony of the Feet: In Chapter 34, Minami climbs an incapacitated Harugon's spiky back in an attempt to wake her up to fight Akae again. He nearly slips due to the boots he was wearing for the movie earlier that day having poor grip, so he removes them and continues climbing barefoot. After just a few minutes of this, his feet are visibly bloodied.
  • Ambiguous Situation: There are hints that he actually knows Kuroe is Harugon. Which is confirmed in Chapter 35.
  • Delayed Reaction: When he sees a photograph Yoneyama gives him proving the latter is Younger Than He Looks, Minami is shown staring at the picture in a Beat Panel for a few seconds before reacting with shock upon realizing what he's seeing.
  • Formerly Fat: Arata Minami used to be chubby in middle school, as seen in the picture he shows Kuroe. This is why he's reluctant to eat his share of the pancakes at Cafe Serizawa during their date. Kuroe convinces him to eat anyway, saying "whether you're a fatty or a beanpole... I don't care."
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He gets easily jealous when he sees Kuroe acting more comfortable around other guys than she ever is with him.
  • Heroic BSoD: In Chapter 27, when Kuroe tearfully breaks up with him, all Minami can do is stare in distraught silence before running off to avoid all the people taking pictures of him. Days later on the movie set, he's still in such a depressed funk that he can barely respond to his acting cues or other people in general — in fact, he was so out of it that he can't even remember agreeing to join the movie in the first place.
  • Interspecies Romance: Kuroe is actually a kaiju who can take human form, while he's a full-blooded human.
  • Nice Guy: Despite being a popular and handsome boy at a school with plenty of other girls who would jump at the chance to date him, he fell for Kuroe even when she was a Creepy Loner Girl because he could see how kind she really was under her awkward exterior. Hearing two mean girls from his school expressing disgust over the two of them dating does nothing to change his resolve to stay by Kuroe's side, and he constantly goes out of his way to accommodate her needs even in the face of her clumsy and oftentimes bizarre tactics to keep her giant secret hidden from him. He's also very kind, patient, and compassionate toward everyone else he interacts with, even jerks like the Girl Posse who bully Kuroe or Seina. And he expresses sympathy for Harugon, the potentially dangerous kaiju, despite almost everyone else expressing fear of it, even before he figures out that it's Kuroe.
  • Pretty Boy: Part of his popularity revolves around his attractive looks.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: Kuroe initially believed that when Arata Minami started talking to her and acting nicely, despite him being a Chick Magnet and her being an antisocial loner, he was just being a casanova wanting to expand his harem. She still held her doubts when they went on their first "date," with her lowering them to allowing herself to be "fooled" by him after he opened up to her about his personal thoughts and feelings. However, what truly shows her that he's completely sincere is that even in front of a Girl Posse of popular girls, he doesn't drop the "act," instead, reinforcing how he feels by holding her hand right in front of those girls' faces.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Arata admits his popularity is overwhelming and at worst annoying due to the unwanted attention. He's usually acting like a good sport about it, but it's later clear that a lot of this annoyance comes from him having to basically starve himself to maintain his attractive body shape.
  • What Does He See in Her?: When the Ginjuuji High student body discovers that Arata is dating Kuroe, they're almost universally stunned (and in the case of the girls, extremely envious). One classmate even asks Arata if Kuroe is threatening him. The only two classmates who aren't shocked and/or disappointed are Manatsu (who helped set the two up) and Rairi (whose insecurities about her appearance and painful experiences with a boy she liked make her naturally sympathetic to Kuroe).

School

    Manatsu

Manatsu Tomosato

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaijugirl_manatsu.jpg
Monster Princess

An eccentric rich girl that loves kaijus. Having grown up surrounded by Kaiju media that her father works on, she loves giant monsters and has her dream realized when she sees Harugon for the first time. She befriends Kuroe, thinking she has the power to summon him.

  • Admiring the Abomination: Manatsu Tomosato grew up as a big fan of Kaiju media, and she becomes captivated by Harugon as a result, praising "him" for his monstrous appearance and even expressing a willingness to be crushed by him.
  • Animal Motif: Moths and caterpillars, though this is actually a way to reference Mothra rather than the bugs themselves.
  • Fearless Fool: Several times in Volume 6, Manatsu tries to jump out of her helicopter wearing her moth outfit to try and fight Akae in retaliation for the latter seriously wounding Harugon.
  • Mad Love: Manatsu Tomosato is a Kaiju obsessed girl who has a crush on Harugon, a Notzilla who starts appearing around Tokyo. Unbeknownst to her, "he" is actually her female classmate Kuroe Akaishi undergoing Involuntary Shapeshifting at times of extreme emotion. Kuroe sporadically tries to urge Manatsu to give up trying to gain Harugon's affections without revealing her Secret Identity, but Manatsu is such a Cloud Cuckoolander that it does no good.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She dreams towards the day where Harugon vaporizes her with "his" fire breath or squishes her flat.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: She is right that Kuroe has a connection to Harugon, but wrong in thinking that she is his summoning Priestess rather than being Harugon.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Manatsu Tomosato is a rich girl who lives in a big mansion with a walk-in closet full of nice dresses and monster costumes and has many servants resembling Ultraman at her beck and call. She's also pretty crazy, being obsessed with Kaiju to the point of harboring a Mad Love for the monster Harugon and having her servants ferry her out on speedboats and helicopters dressed like Mothra in attempts to catch "his" attention. She's nevertheless a kindhearted character, becoming fast friends with and a Romantic Wingman for Kuroe (who she thinks is Harugon's "priestess") despite the latter being shunned by their other classmates.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: In Chapter 36, she's visibly shellshocked when she witnesses Harugon's Disney Death.
  • Wall Pin of Love: In an extra, she dreams of Harugon doing this to her, breaking walls to put its hands around her. Kuroe points out this would just be a life-threatening situation.

    Rairi

Raimu "Rairi" Kouno

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaijugirl_rairi.png
The Transforming High Schooler

"Right on! I'll do it! Gorillas, Kaiju, and everyone else will get to be cute!"

A classmate of Kuroe's starting with their second year. Rairi is a well-known make-up guru around her school and takes an interest in Kuroe when she sees that she could use a little bit more make-up to bring out her best features and charm Minami.

  • Animal Motif: Like Manatsu, she has an animal motif that is meant to reference a popular kaiju. In her case, she has a monkey motif to reference King Kong.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Rairi's introduction. Kuroe is getting bullied by three of the numerous girls jealous of her relationship with Arata when Rairi walks into the classroom. Kuroe notes that Rairi is both very pretty and very popular, and that it would be bad if someone "in the very top caste" became her enemy. Then Rairi is informed by another girl that Kuroe and Arata are dating; she promptly rushes over to Kuroe and knees her in the back. She seems like an abnormally violent Alpha Bitch... but it turns out she just wanted Kuroe to stop slouching because "bad posture will make anybody look ugly." Rairi then proceeds to give Kuroe an impromptu makeover before cheerfully introducing herself.
  • Character Catchphrase: Rairi has "Happy peace!" (or "Posi-peace" in the original Japanese).
  • Class Clown: Rairi was this in middle school, being very good-humored about her gorilla-like appearance and having a general interest in comedy theater, where a lot of her humor came from making fun of her own appearance. This stopped when her crush making fun of her appearance behind her back traumatized her and made her very insecure about her looks.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Whenever she loses her makeup, her eyelids and the surrounding skin are frequently darkened (in a way similar to Donkey Kong's eyes), which makes the switch from "pretty fashionista" to "gorilla-like Gonk" even more startling.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Raimu Kouno was known as "Gorirairi" in middle school because her face resembled a gorilla's. She initially took the teasing in stride, but when she overheard Okada making fun of her face she became much more sensitive about it. In the present, she has shortened it to "Rairi" to make the gorilla connection less obvious.
  • The Fashionista: Rairi is an expert on makeup. Justified in that she put a lot of effort into practicing because of the trauma she went through in middle school due to her looks.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Rairi used to have the braided variant of these in junior high. She eventually dropped them as part of her general self-reinvention.
  • Gonk: Beneath her makeup, her face literally looks like that of a gorilla. She is very insecure about this.
  • Killed to Uphold the Masquerade: Rairi very briefly considers doing this to Okada (with a big rock of all things) when she fears he might recognize her from before her makeover.
  • King Kong Copy: Downplayed with Rairi. She might look and act like a gorilla without her makeup, and even performed a "King Kong" Climb when she snapped back in middle school, but she's a normal human otherwise.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She is often seen eating bananas.
  • Ugly All Along: She's introduced as a beautiful and popular girl who is good with make-up. Without her make-up, Rairi's face resembles a gorilla.

Kuroe's Family

    Rinko

Rinko Akaishi

Kuroe's mother. She's a former biologist turned single mother. She is aware of Kuroe's transformations and while she supports her kid falling in love, she is afraid of the destructive power that it can bring.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Most of the time she comes across as ditzy Genki Girl who spends her time doting on her morose daughter and obsessing over J-Pop. But when she shows off Kuroe's and Akae's nest to Koutarou, she states that she doesn't care if the former loses control of her kaiju instincts because "a world where Kuro-tan and this child can live as they please might be more beautiful than this one." Then when Koutarou tries to contact Cabinet Disaster Response HQ about Akae, she pulls a gun on him while sporting an uncharacteristically somber expression.
  • Date Peepers: Rinko Akaishi disguises herself as "Mitchy" when her daughter Kuroe goes on a date with Arata at Destinyland. Initially, it was to confirm that it was in fact a date (Kuroe previously claimed she was just meeting some friends), but after seeing the date turn awkward thanks to Kuroe's efforts to avoid triggering her Involuntary Shapeshifting, she decides to covertly cheer things up between the two of them.
  • Good Parents: While she's barely able to do much about her daughter's transformation problem, Rinko always does her best to be as good of a mother to her monstrous daughter as she can.
  • Ma'am Shock: Inverted. Rinko is visibly flattered when Arata refers to her as "onee-san."
  • Mama Bear: When Koutarou was about to report Kuroe to being a kaiju, she pulled a gun on him.

    Koutarou

Koutarou Hibino

An outgoing and flirty man that used to be Rinko's kouhai, and is now Kuroe's Honorary Uncle. He seems to hope she'll come back to the biologist and is also in the Harugon secret.
  • The Charmer: He introduces himself by trying to flirt with Rinko, only for her to push him away.
  • Honorary Uncle: Koutarou Hibino, Rinko's old colleague when they were traveling biologists, is like an uncle to Kuroe. He's one of the few people she feels comfortable interacting with, the only person besides her mother and Manatsu to be on a First-Name Basis with her, and he's the one who helped her become a Metalhead.
  • Metal Head: He is the one that got Kuroe into the genre and usually brings her new CDs when he comes to visit.
  • The Mole: He's actually working with the government now, and visited Rinko and Kuroe under false pretenses. His real goal being to investigate Kuroe and ascertain the threat level she may pose. When he learns of a much larger egg in the location Rinko found Kuroe's egg, he immediately tries calling his superiors out of fear it's going to hatch, only stopping when Rinko pulls a gun on him.

    Akae (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Akae

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaijugirlcarameliseakae_5.png
A kaiju who is Kuroe's younger sister from the same egg nest on Kaiju Island. Seventeen years before the present day, Rinko took Kuroe's egg with her back to Tokyo but left behind Akae's egg (along with two other eggs that eventually went inert). This egg kept growing over the years under Rinko's watch, and it hatches in the present as a result of a scuffle between Rinko and Koutarou.

Unlike Kuroe/Harugon, Akae is not friendly toward humans at all, destroying many vehicles and buildings in her search for her elder sister. This brings the two monsters into conflict....
  • Cain and Abel: Akae flew to Japan in order to find her older sister. But Akae's destructiveness forced Kuroe to transform into Harugon and retaliate, resulting in the two sisters fighting each other.
  • Composite Character: Akae evokes multiple Toho kaiju:
    • As an evil, dragonlike monster who serves as the opponent of a Notzilla, she resembles King Ghidorah.
    • The red scales, fin-like ears, and single big horn in the center of her forehead recalls Destoroyah.
    • As a Giant Flyer with attributes of both pterosaurs and birds, she resembles Rodan (particularly his role in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, where he hatched from the same nest as Godzilla Jr. on an Isle of Giant Horrors and went on a rampage in mainland Japan in search of his more benevolent sibling).
    • As a relative of the resident Godzilla analogue who clearly resembles the other monster but also has wings for flight, she is like an evil version of Godzooky.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The very first thing Akae does after hatching is to destroy a cruise ship, indicating that she is not a secretly benevolent creature like Harugon.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Up until Akae's introduction, the series had been a lighthearted romantic comedy where the female lead just happened to occasionally turn into a surprisingly harmless kaiju. But Akae is a straightforwardly dangerous kaiju who is introduced destroying a cruise ship with many people aboard before rampaging across Tokyo, marking the first point where people are killed or in genuine danger of getting killed.
  • Meaningful Name: "Akae" literally means "red picture" in Japanese, fitting for a predominantly red creature.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Akae puts Kuroe/Harugon, Minami, Daichi, and the others into mortal danger with her attack on Tokyo. But the attack also provides an opportunity for Minami to clear up the misunderstanding he had with Daichi and to finally tell Kuroe that he knows that she's Harugon, which resolves most of the tension and awkwardness between Kuroe and Minami up to that point.
  • Red Is Violent: A predominantly red Kaiju and a legitimately dangerous and violent Knight of Cerebus.

Other characters

    Okada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaijugirl_okada.png
Evil Lying Mushroom

An old classmate of Rairi's. She used to have a crush on him, but it turned out he was just playing with her since he already had a girlfriend.

  • Jerkass: He took advantage of Rairi to become popular in middle school, and when they meet again years later, he tries to get her to date him, even though he already has a girlfriend.

    Touko Takamine

Touko Takamine

A TV and film producer who agrees to let the "Kaiju Prince" Arata Minami come on her daytime talk show "Gabfest" to explain his connection to Harugon. It soon becomes apparent that she's just exploiting Minami for ratings.
  • Eyes Always Shut: She fits the shifty "fox eyes" variant of this trope, as she's a producer for the sleazy daytime gossip talk show "Gabfest" who convinces Arata Minami to appear for an interview while sporting a closed-eye smile the whole time.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Minami went on Takamine's "Gabfest" show just to speak up for Harugon, but Takamine uses the opportunity to make him say a scripted (and cheesy) Declaration of Protection for Harugon to heighten his "Kaiju Prince" reputation and increase her show's ratings. She later ropes Minami (who is rather emotionally wrecked and inattentive due to Kuroe breaking up with him) into acting in a kaiju-related movie for which he is ill-suited. Seina says that Takamine has a reputation for doing this.
Seina: Her abilities in this industry are top-notch...but she's pretty risky. She'll do anything for ratings, and to advance her own career...If an amateur's careless enough to get close to her, she'll eat him alive.
  • Perpetual Smiler: She is always seen with a closed-eye smile that emphasizes her outwardly friendly but manipulative personality.

    Seina

Seina Katsuragi

A pushy actress who "befriends" Arata Minami when he first starts getting promoted as "the Kaiju Prince." She manipulates him into helping her advance her career.
  • Crocodile Tears: Seina starts crying in front of Arata when lamenting how much she looked forward to getting a TV spot on the news program that Arata got onto instead. It's clear from her immediate, tear-free demand afterward that Arata put in a good word about her to the show's producer and her glee over Arata's naivete after he leaves that it was a ruse to manipulate him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: In response to Minami's inattentiveness on the movie set and his general naivete, Seina tells him "If your mind is that sluggish, I bet you don't notice your girlfriend's feelings either." She says this because she is selfishly annoyed at having her own work disrupted, but it still makes Minami realize that he has been inconsiderate of Kuroe lately.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a selfish and occasionally abusive prima donna who exploits Minami's 15 Minutes of Fame to benefit her own career and is dismissive toward his emotional problems regarding his relationship with Kuroe. But she still displays concern (in a Tsundere manner) for him and Harugon during the battle against Akae, so she's not totally heartless. And while she was eager to work with Touko Takamine herself, she's sympathetic enough toward naïve amateur Minami to warn him about Takamine's reputation and to suggest he get away from the producer as soon as possible.
Seina: Don't you dare fall, you total amateur!! It's too late to recast your part!!
  • Mistaken for Romance: When Kuroe finds out that the red mark Arata has on his forehead came from getting smacked there by Seina's hat, she initially assumes the actress did a Headbutt of Love while wearing the hat. In reality, Seina angrily hit Arata there out of anger for losing her spot on a talk show; there wasn't any affection involved at all. Then when Kuroe sees Arata and Seina hugging affectionately soon after Kuroe broke up with him, she tearfully runs off — not sticking around long enough to see that it was for a movie (and that Seina was being mean to Arata between takes, so there was no behind-the-scenes romance either).
  • Only Sane Man: In Volume 6, she's the only major named character who reacts with realistic fear to the Behemoth Battle going on. Lovestruck Manatsu (in whose helicopter Seina is riding) is cheering Harugon and trying to leap out to help out against Akae, Rairi is yanking Manatsu back into the helicopter, and Yoneyama and Minami are watching the battle from a bridge out of concern for Harugon's safety. Seina, meanwhile, is begging to be taken home and at one point enters a Troubled Fetal Position while Giving Up the Ghost.
  • The Prima Donna: She's rather short with Minami when the two of them are acting in the Godla movie. He is rather unengaged mentally on the set (due to his recent breakup with Kuroe), but Seina's response is to angrily berate him and even physically smack him a few times.

    Yoneyama

Daichi Yoneyama

A young man who witnessed Kuroe's Breath Weapon and attempted to confront her about it. It's eventually revealed that he's actually an elementary school boy in fifth grade who had a really weird growth spurt.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: His huge growth spurt has resulted in him not having any friends his age.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: He has noticeably thicker eyebrows than the rest of the cast. He gets them from his dad and late mother.
  • Cooldown Hug: He hugs Kuroe after she breaks up with Minami, both to comfort her and to hide the wings that started growing out of her back.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: His mean classmates call him "Yonegon", a mix between "Yoneyama" and "Harugon", because he's big and scary like a kaiju.
  • Face of a Thug: Part of what makes him seem older than he is is that he has the archetypical delinquent look, having messy hair, Tsurime Eyes, and a perpetual scowl, all of which only intimidates Kuroe when she first meets him.
  • Foreshadowing: When he first confronts Kuroe after witnessing her Breath Weapon, he's sitting at a swingset, hinting at how young he actually is.
  • Friendless Background: Because his classmates are freaked out by his height, he has no friends when we first see him. He and Kuroe bond over this.
Kuroe: I've never gamed with anyone else before. This is fun!
    Yoneyama: It is?
Kuroe: Oh. Yeah... I spent a long time without any friends too, so...
Yoneyama: How do people make friends anyway?
    Kuroe: Hrmm... good question.
  • Like Brother and Sister: He eventually sees Kuroe as a big sister, to the point of calling her "Kaiju-Neechan".
  • Missing Mom: His mother died three years before the story's present day.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Minami catches Yoneyama and Kuroe hugging while Yoneyama yells that he loves her. This has the unfortunate effect of eventually convincing Kuroe to break up with Minami out of concern for his well being.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: He declares that he loves Kuroe while hugging her, but obviously as a big sister rather than anything romantic.
  • Really 17 Years Old: Since Yoneyama can pass as an adult, his classmate Gouda offers to be his friend in exchange for buying a dirty magazine. Sure enough, Yoneyama gets an adult item without any trouble from the clerk — but it was a dirty manga, which is not what Gouda wanted.
  • Shared Family Quirks: He's just as direct, excitable, and pushy as his father.
  • That Came Out Wrong: He says he wants Kuroe to "come have some fun" with him in exchange for staying quiet about her transformations. Kuroe (who thinks that he's a grown man at this point) interprets this as Sexual Extortion, but later finds out that he just wanted her to play video games with him.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's in the fifth grade, but Kuroe mistook him for a college student.
