    Doctor Oobleck

Doctor Bartholomew Oobleck

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oobleck_6.png

Species: Remnantian

Debut: Control

A doctor who teaches history at Beacon Academy. Jaune considers Oobleck's class to be the worst, not because of its difficulty, but because the professor talks so fast that it's hard to retain anything he says.
  • Combat Commentator: In "Gnawing", he acts as one of the commentators for one of team JNPR's matches in the Vytal Festival Tournament.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Shows himself to be capable of being rather snarky when Cardin accidentally flicks a paper football at his chest while aiming for Jaune's head.
Cardin: [weakly] It, uhh… wasn't me.
Dr. Oobleck: Yes, and I suppose this papyrus pigskin just seemingly apparated out of thin air? That must be quite the useful semblance, if true, Mr. Winchester.
  • Motor Mouth: He's a very fast talker to the point where Jaune has difficulty retaining memory of anything he says.

    Professor Peach

  • School Nurse: Acts as the school doctor for Beacon when she's not teaching Plant Science class.

  • Adaptation Name Change: Their names are changed from Seer'aa and Teer'aa in the games to Seera and Teera in this fic.

  • Guns Akimbo: Seera uses a pair of pistols.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: They both dress in tight leather outfits.
  • Named by the Adaptation: In the games, their surnames were never revealed. Here, they are given the last name "Sun" in reference to their team name.
  • Numerological Motif: 2. A pair of twins whose team name is Twin Suns. In addition, both dual-wield their weapons.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rwby_team_brnz.png
From left to right: Roy, Nolan, Brawnz, and May

Debut: Vytal

A Huntsmen team from Shade that participates in the Vytal Festival Tournament.
  • The Cavalry: Near the end of "Nihilus", they are amongst the Huntsmen who arrive as back-up for the heroes just as Nihilus seems to have all but defeated him. Subverted when they never get the chance to join in on the fight as Nihilus uses his telekinesis to throw an airship at the gathered fighters, forcing them all to scatter and leaving the fates of Team BRNZ ambiguous.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Brawnz, Roy, and Nolan all specialize in close-range fighting.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: While May is a formidable sniper, it comes at the cost of her being a subpar hand-to-hand combatant. Jaune exploits this by forcing her to fight him in close-quarters, allowing him to mop the floor with her.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: All three of the team's male members specialize in fighting close-range, while the lone female uses a sniper rifle to shoot from afar.
  • Long-Range Fighter: May is the only member of the team who specializes in long-range combat, balancing out the other three's Close-Range Combatant style of fighting.
  • Not The Face: Brawnz screams "Oh god not the face!" when a berserk Nora charges at him with her warhammer during their tournament match.
  • Uncertain Doom: They are among the many students that went missing after Nihilus crashed an airship into Beacon. It's unknown whether they were killed as their bodies haven't been found yet.

  • Black Girl Dies First: The dark-skinned Arslan is the first member of ABRN to be killed by Nihilus in chapter 18.
  • C-List Fodder: They were minor characters in canon. Here, they are killed off almost as soon as they introduced in order to highlight the serious threat that Darth Nihilus poses.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Arslan is shown preferring to fight in close quarters and is described as the best melee fighter on her team.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death:
    • Nadir and Reese are instantly fried to death by Nihilus's Force-lightning.
    • Nihilus uses the crushed remains of Crescent Rose as a cannonball to splatter Bolin's head, leaving behind only his headless torso.
  • Death by Adaptation: In canon, they survive the events of Volume 3. Here, they're all killed off by Nihilus.
  • Fury-Fueled Foolishness: Blinded by anger at Nihilus for killing his teammates, Bolin loudly screams while charging at a distracted Nihilus, alerting the latter to his attack. Nihilus even internally lampshades how stupid Bolin's decision was and notes how even a pre-Dark Side Jaune could deflect his obvious attack.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble
  • High-Voltage Death: Nadir and Reese are killed after being hit by Nihilus's Force lightning.
  • Hover Board: Reese has a hoverboard which she uses to fly around and outflank her opponents in battle.

  • The Voiceless: None of them are seen speaking in their single appearance, although presumably they can talk.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Are killed off shortly after they're introduced.
  • Your Head A-Splode: Bolin's head gets blasted through by Nihilus.

    Team FNKI

  • The Cavalry: They are among the students who come to reinforce the heroes against Nihilus in "Nihilus".
  • C-List Fodder: Of the four-man team, the two members who die happen to be Ivori and Kobalt, both of whom canonically receive less focus than Flynt or Neon.
  • Death by Adaptation: Ivori and Kobalt are both killed during the Battle of Beacon after they are hit by the explosion of a crashing airship.
  • Uncertain Doom: They disappear after last being seen fighting Nihilus before the Sith forced an airship to crash into the area and cause a massive explosion. They aren't among the students who later rally around Beacon Tower. Ironwood's soldiers later discover their bodies in "Death". Flynt and Neon were knocked unconscious by the airship's explosion, but Ivori and Kobalt are both dead.

Flynt Coal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flynt_profilepic_normal_8.png

Species: Remnantian

Debut: Nihilus

A Huntsmen-in-training from Atlas Academy. He competed in the Vytal Festival alongside his team.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Flynt blasts Nihilus with his trumpet just as he's about to kill Ruby.
  • Dynamic Entry: In "Nihilus", he makes himself known by loudly blaring his trumpet and buffeting Darth Nihilus back with sound waves from his trumpet.
  • The Voiceless: He's never heard talking.

Atlas Military

    Donald Doyle

Colonel Donald Doyle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/27bab1f1cd2f9c1382252f88acb631eb.png

Debut: Death

A colonel in the Atlesian military and Ironwood's operational second-in-command. During the Battle of Beacon, he takes charge of the forces left to defend Vale.
  • Adaptational Badass: In Red vs. Blue, Doyle was an incompetent leader who lacked any military experience. This version is a skilled tactician capable of coordinating an army in a multifront battle. In addition, the fact that Ironwood trusts him enough to leave him in charge of Vale's defenses indicates that Doyle actually earned his rank of colonel based on his own merits rather than gaining it through succession like his RvB counterpart.
  • Adaptational Job Change: This version of Doyle is a colonel instead of a general like his Red vs. Blue counterpart.
  • The Faceless: When he's introduced, his face is covered by a fully-sealed helmet.
  • In Name Only: He bears little-to-no resemblance to his canon counterpart aside from sharing the same name.
  • Number Two: He is Ironwood's second-in-command of the Atlesian military's general infantry and drone units.
  • Shout-Out: To the character of the same name from Red vs. Blue.

    Caroline Cordovin
  • The Ghost: Has only been mentioned thus far.

    Clover Elbi
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Winter sends him to protect Ruby who is the new Fall Maiden a Silver Eyed Warrior and a huntress in training. Its justified as Ruby is still in training and has no idea how to use either of her new powers.
  • Contrasting Replacement Character: To Qrow after he's assigned to replace him by Ozpin and Winter. Whereas Qrow preferred to work alone and had a Semblance which causes bad luck, Clover is part of a military unit and has a Semblance which causes good luck.
  • The Ghost: He's only mentioned in the epilogue.

Minor Characters

Characters who play a relatively minor role in the story.
    Ash

Ash

Species: Remnantian

Debut: Fear

"This is Bullhead Four-Seven-Niner, contacting Professor Goodwitch. Did somebody call for fifteen tons of badass?"

A Bullhead pilot who Glynda calls in to help kill the terentatek in "Fear".
  • First-Name Basis: It's implied that she and Glynda are old friends as Glynda addresses Ash by her first name instead of using her surname like she does with everyone else.
  • Gunship Rescue: In "Fear", she saves the day when she pilots a Bullhead and uses its armaments to severely weaken the terentatek right as it was about to finish off the heroes.
  • One-Shot Character: Only appears in "Fear".
  • Only One Name: She's only referred to by her first name "Ash" and her last name is never mentioned.
  • Shout-Out: Her name and Bullhead designation is a reference to the character Ash from Red vs. Blue.

    The Nurse

Nurse

Species: Remnantian

Debut: Malachor

"Can you hear me? Hold on, I'll go get the Doctor."
An attractive nurse who cares for Jaune while he is recovering in the hospital following his near-death from the terentatek's attack.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a Hospital Hottie who wears "a skirt a bit too high" and her shirt shows ample cleavage. She also subjects Jaune to Marshmallow Hell when she leans over his hospital bed to adjust his pillow and unknowingly smothers Jaune's face with her bosom.
  • No Name Given: She's only ever referred to as "the nurse".
  • One-Shot Character: Appears only once in "Malachor" and is never seen again.

    Store Clerk

Store Clerk

Species: Remnantian

Debut: Dance

"Excuse me, do you need any assistance?"
A store clerk who works at Adel Attire, a high-end fashion shop in Vale's commercial district.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Jaune senses through the Force that behind the clerk's friendly face is a classist who looks down on Jaune as a random commoner.
  • Fighting from the Inside: When Jaune unknowingly uses a mind trick to get him and his friends a discount, the clerk is visibly trying to resist the mental command, freezing up until Jaune unknowingly increases the pressure of the Force, causing him to cave in.
  • Hidden Depths: For a clothing store clerk, he's surprisingly knowledgable about Vale's history during the Great War.
  • Mr. Exposition: When asked about the assassin robes that Jaune purchases, the clerk gives a detailed explanation of the history behind the design, as well as an abridged summary of the Temple of Shadows cult, a group that later debuts in "Legends".
  • No Name Given: His actual name is never given.
  • One-Shot Character: Only appears once in "Dance".
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He dresses in a slim-fitting black suit.

    The Waitress (Major Spoilers)

The Waitress

Species: Remnantian

Debut: Nihilus

A young woman who was working as a waitress at one of the Vytal Festival's fairgrounds. She was present when Nihilus took over Jaune's body and hid behind one of the festival's stalls during Nihilus's rampage. She attempts to flee when Nihilus forces an airship to crash into Beacon, only for Qrow's Semblance to cause her to slip, forcing the Huntsman to sacrifice himself and use his body to shield hers.

  • Dramatic Slip: While fleeing from a crashing airship, she slips on a random piece of viscera and struggles to get back up. Justified since Qrow's Semblance is implied to be responsible for causing her to slip.
  • Flat Character: The only thing really known about her is her job as a waitress.
  • Innocent Bystander: A completely innocent civilian who was working as a waitress at the Vytal Festival's fairgrounds and did not sign up for the terror that Nihilus unleashes upon Beacon.
  • Killed Offscreen: Dies offscreen after the explosion from the airship instantly snaps her neck. Ironwood finds her corpse next to a dying Qrow in "Death".
  • Neck Snap: The explosion from Ironwood's airship twisted her neck, killing her instantly.
  • No Name Given: She's never given a name.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Only appears in two scenes, but is indirectly responsible for Qrow dying (through no fault of her own). Because she tripped while trying to flee from an incoming airship, Qrow chooses to sacrifice himself by using his body to shield hers. She still dies anyway and Qrow winds up being impaled by a piece of the airship's wreckage, leading to his death from blood loss not long afterwards.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: She's a normal civilian who doesn't have her Aura unlocked. Even though Qrow was using his body to shield hers from the crashing airship, she is still instantly killed by the force of the airship's explosion.
  • The Voiceless: Is never shown speaking throughout any of her appearances.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's almost impossible to talk about her without bringing up the role she plays in causing Qrow's death.

    Arc Family

Jacob and Isabella Arc

Jaune's father and mother.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: While both versions of Jaune's parents didn't believe their son would succeed at becoming a Huntsman, their canon counterparts were still willing to let Jaune leave home to enroll at Beacon. Here, they're mentioned to be overprotective helicopter parents who Jaune resorted to running away from in order to attend Beacon.
  • Happily Married: They've had eight kids and continue to have a solid marriage. Their love for each other hasn't waned either, if Jaune's comments in "Dance" are to be believed.
Weiss: Seven sisters!? Do your parents not have a hobby?
Jaune: [laughs] I think that is their hobby.
  • Missing Child: Imagine waking up one day to find that your teenage son has suddenly gone missing with no way of knowing where or why he has disappeared. Then you go months with no clue as to what happened to him until one day, while watching the TV, you see live footage of your missing son committing mass murder.
  • My Beloved Smother: Jaune describes them as the ultimate helicopter parents, being both overprotective and invasive of his privacy.
  • Named by the Adaptation: In canon, both of Jaune's parents are unnamed. Here, it's mentioned in the epilogue that their names are Jacob and Isabella.
  • Porn Stash: According to Jaune, his father has strongboxes which he uses to store weapons and "magazines he didn't want [Jaune's] mom to find."
  • Secret-Keeper: After Jaune's death during the Fall of Beacon, Glynda pressures Ozpin into telling them the truth about their son's possession by Darth Nihilus and how he sacrificed himself in order defeat him.

Amber Arc

One of Jaune's younger sisters.
  • Alliterative Name: Amber Arc.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: Whenever her parents don't let her eat cookies, she throws a tantrum while lying down on the ground. She does this knowing that Jaune can't stand to see her upset and will probably give her some cookies when their parents aren't watching.
  • The Ghost: Is only mentioned once and never makes an appearance.
  • Named by the Adaptation: She's one of Jaune's seven sisters and is named "Amber" in this fic.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. She shares the same name as the Fall Maiden by pure coincidence and is a completely different character from her.
  • Satellite Character: Most of what is known about her comes from her connection to Jaune as his younger sister.
  • Tempting Cookie Jar: According to Jaune, she likes to sneak into the family kitchen and steal cookies out of the cookie jar.

Alixandre Arc

Jaune's great-great-grandfather who fought in the Great War as a general for Vale's army. See Historical Characters below for more information on him.

Historical Characters

Temple of Shadows

    In General

Temple of Shadows

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sithassassin.png
One of the Temple's shadow monks.

Debut: Legends

"They were a group of 'shadow monks', so to speak. A death cult that worshipped the Brother of Darkness, from the religion of the Two Brothers. They saw death and destruction as the perfect way to honor their dark god, and would hire themselves out as mercenaries and assassins, doing all sorts of evil deeds."
Store clerk, "Dance"

A Valean death cult that was active around the time of the Great War. They were once part of the Church of the Two Brothers until one of their monks discovered the Mask of Nihilus after scavenging it from a "falling star". Believing the mask to be a gift from the heavens, they broke off from the Church and formed a Cargo Cult surrounding the mask. Nihilus corrupted the cult to the Dark Side and converted them into his personal assassins. Renaming themselves the "Temple of Shadows", the Temple carried out countless contract killings during the Great War, as well as sacrificing hundreds of innocent people to their dark god.

Eventually, word of their crimes reached King Osmund of Vale, who branded the group as heretics and sent his army to wipe them out. Despite the total destruction of the cult, their feared reputation would inspire several fashion designers to create Huntsmen outfits based on the robes worn by the Temple's assassins.
  • Badass Army: They're an army of assassins capable of going toe-to-toe with Vale's military during the Great War.
  • Cargo Cult: They started out worshipping Nihilus's mask because they assumed it was a gift from the Brother Gods.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: They are first mentioned in "Dance" by a clerk at the clothing store where Jaune buys his new Huntsman outfit. They later make a proper appearance in "Legends", where it's revealed that they were founded by Nihilus shortly after his mask was dumped on Remnant.
  • Child Soldiers: While storming their monastery, Alixandre is disheartened to see that some of their assassins were just children.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Being assassins, they never fight fairly and prefer to ambush their opponents when they're tired or distracted.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: They are an evil expy of the Jedi Order. Like the Jedi, they're a religious order of monks who train in combat, initially used supernatural abilities to protect the weak against the darkness, indoctrinate children, and have their leaders going by the rank of "Grand Master". Much like how the Jedi were wiped out by the Clone Army at the end of the Clone Wars, the Temple was also eradicated by Vale's military at the end of the Great War. However, the Temple of Shadows is a death cult that performed human sacrifices, used their abilities to carry out high-profile assassinations, and worshipped the God of Darkness rather than serve the Light Side like the Jedi did. Knowing Nihilus, this may have been intentional.
  • Cult: They have all the markings of one. Their followers are kept isolated from mainstream society, their entire lives revolve around worshipping the God of Darkness (actually the Mask of Darth Nihilus), and they regularly sacrifice humans in the name of their dark god.
  • Dark Is Evil: They call themselves the Temple of Shadows, worship the Brother of Darkness, and dress in black robed outfits.
  • Elite Army: Downplayed. While the numerically-superior army of Vale eventually succeeds in wiping out the much smaller cult, each assassin is so skilled and dangerous that for every cult member killed, a dozen Valean soldiers die in the effort.
  • Elite Mook: Their assassins were a cut above the average Valean soldier and for every assassin Vale's army killed, a dozen Valean soldiers would die in the process.
  • Face–Heel Turn: They were once a noble order of monks devoted to protecting the weak and spreading the message of their church. The Mask of Nihilus gradually corrupted them into his own personal cult of assassins.
  • Famed In-Story: By the modern-day, they're remembered as one of the most feared assassins' guilds in history. Some clothing stores even sell replicas of their assassin's garb to huntsmen.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Before being exposed to the Dark Side's corrupting influence, they were a minor religious sect whose sphere of influence was limited to a few isolated villages along Vale's eastern mountains. Skip to decades later, and they've become a death cult with a body count likely in the hundreds (if not thousands) and have garnered a reputation as the number one assassin guild in all of Remnant.
  • The Heretic: They were once part of the Church of the Two Brothers until they were corrupted by the Dark Side and abandoned the church in favor of starting a death cult that solely worshipped the God of Darkness.
  • Hit-and-Run Tactics: When Vale's army stormed their monastery, the Temple's monks would make use of hit-and-run tactics, waiting for Vale's soldiers to let their guard down before suddenly swooping in to kill them before vanishing.
  • Human Sacrifice: They sacrificed countless victims to the God of Darkness. In reality, they were being duped by Nihilus, who needed a steady supply of living people for his mask to consume.
  • Last Stand
  • Murder, Inc.: Became an assassin guild that offered contracts to both sides during the Great War.
  • Ninja: They're a secretive group of warriors who wear black clothing, use swift movements and stealth in combat, and carry out assassinations for money.
  • Posthumous Character: All of them have been dead for nearly eighty years by present day.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: They took up work as assassins primarily because they needed more people to sacrifice to Nihilus's mask without drawing suspicion. They decided that if they were going to kill a lot of people, they may as well get paid for it.
  • Professional Killers: They would carry out contract killings on politicians, military leaders, and the wealthy elite during the Great War.
  • Psycho for Hire
  • Religion of Evil: They explicitly worship the God of Darkness, kidnap random travelers to sacrifice to their Dark God, and preach spreading death and destruction in their deity's name.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: They were formerly part of the Church of the Two Brothers until some of their monks switched over to solely worshipping the God of Darkness and broke off to form their own cult.
  • Temple of Doom: Their Supervillain Lair is a monastery is filled with booby traps designed to kill any unwanted intruders. These include poison darts, spike pits, pressure plates and razor wire.
  • Tyke Bomb: Some of their assassins were raised as children to kill for them.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Nihilus's Force ghost, who tricks them into thinking that he's the God of Darkness and uses their practice of sacrificing humans to search for a Force-sensitive to possess.
  • Warrior Monk: They started out as a sect of monks who offered guidance and refuge for travelers and were trained to fight off the Grimm.

    Petros Krizoz

Grand Master Petros Krizoz

Species: Remnantian

Debut: Legends

"So, the Warrior-King Osmund has finally grown tired of our presence. Come child. Gather your brothers and sisters, and we shall honor our Lord by dying well."

The Grand Master of the Temple of Shadows, a death cult that worshipped the God of Darkness. He was once a humble monk from the Church of the Two Brothers until one day, when he came across a strange artifact while investigating the crash site of a "falling star". After being corrupted by Nihilus, he gradually took over his sect of the Church and transformed it into a death cult centered around the worship of Nihilus's mask.
  • Badass Long Robe: He dresses in a black robes and is a master assassin.
  • Black Cloak: He wears black robes which make him look menacing and mysterious.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Darth Nihilus's mask is the one really controlling the cult, but he relies on Petros to carry out his orders and allows Petros to run his cult however he sees fit.
  • Evil Laugh: Starts cackling while facing off against Alixandre.
  • Evil Old Folks: Doesn't let his old age stop him from leading an assassin death cult.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: While under the Dark Side's influence, Petros's eyes turn yellow, his skin becomes wrinkled and pale, and his teeth turn rotted.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: While facing off against Alixandre, Petros speaks in a raspy voice. Justified since Petros was a decrepit old man by that point and his vocal chords had likely worn down with age.
  • Expy: He's basically an elderly Tyrian Callows reimagined as a cult leader, being a highly religious assassin that reveres the Big Bad as a god and gleefully slaughters innocent people in their master's name.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Was once a peaceful monk devoted to protecting and guiding the weak. Under Nihilus's influence, he turns into a violent cult leader and a master assassin devoted to sacrificing innocent people to sate Nihilus's hunger.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He was just some random monk before Nihilus's mask corrupted him into a master assassin and cult leader.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Alixandre Arc kills him by running him through with Crocea Mors.
  • Ironic Name: Petros is the Greek version of the name Peter, which means stone/rock. He gets killed by a guy who has Geokinesis as his Semblance.
  • Killed Offscreen: His death is never shown onscreen and the reader only sees its prelude and aftermath. Right as Petros is about to fight Alixandre, the story uses a Charge-into-Combat Cut to transition to the next scene which shows an exhausted Alixandre standing triumphantly over Petros's eviscerated corpse.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: He takes advantage of the Great War by offering his assassins' services to both sides, creating a lot of wealth for his cult and providing a lot of victims to sacrifice to his god.
  • Meaningful Name: "Petros" is the Greek version of the name "Peter" and originates from the Greek translation of the Bible. In the Bible, Peter was the most prominent of Jesus' twelve disciples and became the first pope of the Catholic Church following Christ's death. Like Peter, Petros was Nihilus's first worshipper on Remnant and he too would eventually become the leader of a religious sect devoted to following Nihilus's teachings.
  • Mouth of Sauron: For the God of Darkness, who communicates to Petros through the Temple's artifact. In reality, it's Darth Nihilus's soul.
  • Not Afraid to Die: When Vale's army attacks his stronghold, rather than flee, he chooses to stay behind for a Last Stand. When he's finally corned by Vale's soldiers, he shows no fear of dying and instead welcomes a good fight.
  • Odd Name Out: His name doesn't follow the Color Rule of the setting. Justified since he lived before the Great War.
  • Old Master: By the time he's an old man, he's no longer an active assassin but spends his time training the next generation.
  • Original Character: Was created solely for this fanfic.
  • Scary Teeth: His teeth become completely rotted under the Dark Side's influence.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: By the time he's an old man, he sports yellow eyes indicating that he's fallen under the influence to the Dark Side.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Darth Nihilus, to the point where he was willing to sacrifice his life in Nihilus's name when Vale's army attacked the Temple.
  • Unperson: Alix is so disgusted by Krizoz's crimes that he personally ensures that there are no records left of his existence.
  • Warrior Monk: Was one in his youth.
  • Weak, but Skilled: He lacks any Force-sensitivity, making Nihilus unable to possess him. However, his skills as an assassin are second-to-none. Under his leadership, the Temple of Shadows went from being a minor religious sect to the most feared assassin guild in all of Remnant.

Kingdom of Vale

    King Osmund

King Osmund

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_of_vale.jpg

Ozpin's previous incarnation as the King of Vale. After the Great War ended, he dismantled the military and established the Huntsmen Academies.
  • Abdicate the Throne: Stepped down from his throne after the Great War ended.
  • The Ghost: Is only mentioned a few times during Alix's POV segment.
  • The Good King: He was a benevolent ruler who had an evil cult wiped out and later stepped down from his throne to establish a democracy.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Though he never appears in "Legends", General Alixandre answers to him and he was the one who gave the order to have Vale's army wipe out the Temple of Shadows.
  • Meaningful Name: Osmund is a Germanic name meaning "divine protector".
  • Named by the Adaptation: His name is "Osmund", while in canon he is unnamed.
  • Posthumous Character: Played with. While the man himself is long dead by the events in the story, part of his soul survives in Ozpin, who is his reincarnation.
  • Warrior Prince: He's known as the Warrior-King Osmund.

    Alixandre Arc (Unmarked Spoilers)

General Alixandre "Alix" Arc

Species: Remnantian

Debut: Legends

A Valean general who fought in the Great War and Jaune's great-great-grandfather. He led Vale's army and was responsible for eradicating the Temple of Shadows under King Osmund's orders.
  • Alliterative Name: Alixandre Arc.
  • Call to Agriculture: After the Great War ended, he moved to the countryside and retired to a quiet life as a farmer.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: In "Dreams", Jaune mentions how his sword originally belonged to his great-great-grandfather, who used it to fight in the Great War. In "Legends", it turns out that Jaune's ancestor was the one responsible for wiping out the Temple of Shadows and sealing away the Mask of Darth Nihilus in the cave where Jaune found it.
  • Cool Sword: He was the original owner of Crocea Mors and used it in battle during the Great War.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: His Semblance, Geokinesis, allows him to control the earth by stomping his foot on the ground. He uses it to create a cave in the cliffside and seals Nihilus's mask inside.
  • Foil: To the canon version of General Ironwood. Like Ironwood, Alixandre is the leading general of a kingdom's military who served one of Ozma's incarnations. Whereas canon!Ironwood believed that only he knew best and was partially driven by the desire to be proven right, Alixandre remained a Humble Hero who put the needs of his kingdom ahead of his own. While Ironwood often questioned Ozpin's decisions, Alixandre remained unquestioningly loyal to the very end. Canon!Ironwood is incapable of accepting any responsibility for when things go wrong and constantly feels the need to blame someone else. When Alixandre was nearly manipulated by Nihilus, he blamed himself for falling for Nihilus's lies and had a My God, What Have I Done? reaction to nearly putting on Nihilus's mask. The way they acted when pressured by the Big Bad also differs significantly. When Salem preyed on Ironwood's fear of her in the penultimate episode of Volume 7, he wound up turning on Ozpin and went completely off the deep end. When Nihilus tried to manipulate Alix by taking advantage of his buried resentment towards Osmund, Alix managed to resist Nihilus's influence and put the wellbeing of his kingdom above his own petty desires. This is also reflected in their choice of weapons. Alixandre uses a sword and shield (close-range weapons) while Ironwood used a pair of pistols (long-range weapons).
  • Four-Star Badass: A skilled warrior who holds the rank of general and has the skill to back it up.
  • Frontline General: Fights on the front line alongside his troops.
  • Genre Blind: After resisting Nihilus's influence and sealing the mask inside a cave, he decides to forget all about it, thinking that no one will ever manage to find Nihilus's mask.
  • Good Is Not Nice: While he is a noble and courageous man, he shows little mercy to those that dare to threaten the people of Vale, as shown with how he wiped out all traces of the Temple of Shadows and showed no quarter (even to the Temple's Child Soldiers).
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Alixandre was one of Jaune's main inspirations for wanting to become a hero, having grown up being told stories of Alix's exploits during the Great War by his parents. He's also the one who destroyed the Temple of Shadows and originally sealed Nihilus's mask inside the cavern that Jaune stumbles into at the start of the story.
  • Hero of Another Story: He's the heroic and selfless general of Vale's army whose had many adventures while fighting in the Great War. His victory over the Temple of Shadows is one of many legendary feats he accomplished over the course of his life.
  • Heroic Willpower: Was able to resist Nihilus's corruption at the last second through his strong morals and deep loyalty to his kingdom.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite presenting himself as a Humble Hero, a small part of Alix was resentful towards Osmund for disbanding the military and felt that he deserved more for his lifelong service in the army.
  • Humble Hero: When he was offered a parade to escort him home, he turned it down and considered loyalty to be its own reward.
  • Ideal Hero: Selfless, noble, humble, kind-hearted, and devoted to doing the right thing no matter what. He checks off many of the qualifications.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: He's the archetypal noble warrior who dresses in armor and champions the weak against evil forces like the Temple.
  • Meaningful Name: Alixandre is the French form for the Greek name "Alexander", which roughly means "defender of man".
  • Named by the Adaptation: In canon, Jaune's great-great-grandfather is only mentioned once and isn't even named. In this fic, he's given the name Alixandre.
  • Odd Name Out: His name doesn't follow the "color naming rule" of RWBY. Justified since he's living in a time period that took place before that rule was established.
  • O.C. Stand-in: While Jaune has mentioned his great-great-grandfather in canon, the only thing known about him was that he previously owned Crocea Mors and fought in the Great War. Here, he's portrayed as a paragon of justice who led Vale's army during the Great War and showed Undying Loyalty to Vale's king.
  • Posthumous Character: He's likely been dead for decades by present day.
  • Precursor Hero: He was a noble Valean general who fought during the Great War and was deeply loyal to Ozma's incarnation as the King of Vale. He was responsible for wiping out a cult of assassins that worshipped the God of Darkness and imprisoned Nihilus's mask inside a cave after resisting Nihilus's influence over his mind.
  • The Resenter: A part of him was resentful towards Osmund for disbanding Vale's military, believing that he deserved to be given some kind of reward for his loyalty and feeling like he was being discarded now that he was no longer needed. The Mask of Nihilus preyed on this resentment and used Alix's feelings of being unappreciated to try and convince him to overthrow Vale's newly democratic government and install his own military dictatorship. Luckily, Alix manages to break free from Nihilus's control through his own Heroic Willpower.
  • Retired Badass: Once the Great War is over, Alixandre steps down as general and retires to a quiet life in Ansel, where he spends the rest of his days raising his son and tending to his family's farm.
  • Scarred Equipment: He keeps the battle damage on his armor because he considered it a source of pride and a symbol of his experience.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Downplayed. Alixandre is saddened upon discovering that some of the Temple's cultists he's killing are children, but he doesn't let that stop him from carrying out his orders to execute all of the Temple's assassins.

    Lieutenant Isabelle

Lieutenant Isabelle

Debut: Legends

One of General Arc's lieutenants during the Great War. She fought by his side while storming the Temple of Shadows' base and was amongst those who survived the battle.
  • Action Girl: The fact that she was among the soldiers who took on the Temple of Shadows and survived speaks volumes to how skilled she is in battle.
  • Blood-Splattered Warrior: After wiping out the Temple of Shadows, her body is drenched in blood from all the cultists she killed.
  • Flat Character: She doesn't receive much characterization aside from being highly-disciplined.
  • Military Salute: She impresses Alixandre by giving him a perfect military salute after the battle with Krizoz's cultists despite being both wounded and covered in blood.
  • One-Shot Character: She only appears once during a flashback and is never seen again.
  • Only One Name: Only her first name is known and her last name is never mentioned.
  • Original Character: Is an original character created for this fanfic.

Beings of Remnant

Supernatural beings who have shaped Remnant's legends and myths.
    The Two Brothers

The God of Light & God of Darkness

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rwby_gods.PNG

Species: Celestials

A pair of Celestials worshipped as gods by the humans of Remnant. They were responsible for creating the humans native to Remnant as well as cursing Ozpin with reincarnation.
  • Adaptational Species Change: They go from being actual deities to Celestials.
  • All There in the Manual: Much of what is known about them, from their nature as Celestials to being the creators of the terentatek, comes from the author's AN or in his written responses to reviewers.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: For all of Nihilus's vast power, even at full strength he can't compare to the Celestials, which includes the Brother Gods. During the final battle, a single blast from Ruby's Silver Eyes instantly downs him. Considering that the Silver Eyes were gifted to humanity by the God of Light, it's safe to say that a confrontation between the God of Light and Nihilus would have likely been even more one-sided.
  • For Science!: Being the Celestials' equivalent of scientists, much of their actions and motivations stem from this. They created all life on Remnant — including a new subspecies of humanity and the Grimm — as part of an unknown experiment. Likewise, part of the reason they brought back a new iteration of humanity, as well as curse Ozma and Salem with immortality, was because they wanted to see whether a species is capable of surviving without having a direct connection to the Force.
  • The Ghost: Are only mentioned thus far.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The God of Darkness created the terentatek which attacked Jaune in Forever Fall as part of his experiments. He was also worshipped by the Temple of Shadows and Nihilus impersonated him in order to get the Temple to do his bidding.
  • I Have Many Names: The God of Darkness is known by several different names on Remnant including the Brother of Darkness, Dark God, and Dark Brother.
  • The Maker: They are responsible for creating all life on Remnant, including humanity and the Grimm. It's also implied that they even created the solar system Remnant is located in.
  • Maker of Monsters: The God of Darkness created the Grimm, as well as a collection of Dark Side creatures like the terentatek.
  • Not Me This Time: Ozpin suspects their involvement with Jaune's powers since Jaune's possession almost seems like a combination of his and Salem's backstories.
  • Sufficiently Advanced Alien: This fic retcons them as being Celestials, a race of aliens who built the Star Wars galaxy in the Legends continuity and are so powerful in the Force that they might as well be Physical Gods.
  • World's Strongest Man: They are bar none the most powerful characters in the setting. Even Nihilus at his full strength is no match for them.

    The Maidens
A group of four extremely powerful Force spirits who grant their hosts control over the elements of nature.
  • Adaptational Origin Connection: This fic's version of the Maidens have their origins altered so they are powerful Force ghosts that grants their hosts Powers via Possession, much like Nihilus.
  • Elemental Absorption: In addition to controlling all of the elements, the Maidens are also able to absorb any elemental attack and fuel their magic with it.
  • Elemental Powers: Each Maiden has control over all the elements, including wind, fire, and electricity.
  • Fireball Eyeballs: Whenever a Maiden uses their powers, their eyes are alight with flames.
  • Foil: To Darth Nihilus. Like Nihilus, they are Force ghosts who grant supernatural powers to their hosts. However, while Nihilus has control over his hosts' bodies, the Maidens are controlled by their hosts.
  • Legacy Character
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: Various parties throughout history have tried to gain control over the Maidens and their elemental magic. The reason that Cinder attacked Amber and is trying to destroy Beacon is all because she wants the Fall Maiden's powers for herself. Once Darth Nihilus revives himself, he also becomes interested in the Maidens and starts hunting them down with the intention of draining their magic.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Unlike regular Force ghosts, who control their host's bodies, the Maidens are each controlled by their hosts.
  • Powers via Possession: They grant their hosts Elemental Powers by possessing their bodies.
  • Wrong Context Magic: While sufficiently powerful Force ghosts are able to empower their hosts with the Force, the spirit is often the one in control over the body. The Maidens break the mold of typical Force ghosts by having the hosts control not just their bodies, but bend the will of the spirits as well.
