Protagonists

Introduced in Inkopolis Chaos 1

    Samuel Turfblu

Samuel Turfblu

The main protagonist of the stories. He is a kind inkling boy, who strongly believes that inklings and octolings should all get along. He cares for his friends, and is even willing to defend people he hasn’t met, as shown many times. He is a pretty ordinary person who gets thrust into tough situations by antagonists or even his own hearts, but he never gives up, no matter what, even when face to face with a malicious dictator who wants to destroy everything he loves. He will always fight to the finish to keep everyone safe.

  • Battle Couple: He and Natalie often fight together.
  • Determinator: He never gives up, no matter what. Even though he often feels insecure, he doesn’t let that stop him from trying. Not only that, but he encourages others not to give up.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Subverted in the third fic. When the bomb station is about to explode with Samuel and Natalie trapped inside, they say their love for each other before passing out. Luckily, Jade rescues them in time, one minute before the station explodes.
  • The Hero: He is the main protagonist, getting the most focus (alongside Natalie). Despite this, the others get plenty of focus as well.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Even after it’s revealed that Cyalux was evil all along, he keeps trying to get him back and revert back to his former self. He kept trying to get his friend back, but sadly Cyalux didn’t change.
  • Nice Guy: He’s a pretty friendly guy, and is nice to most people. In fact, the reason he proved Natalies innocence was due to his compassion. He’s especially nice to his friends as well.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He hands one out to Lieutenant Obsidian, pointing out how the Inkopolis of today is different to the one she knew, and how octolings are now living happily. He then takes a direct jab at her, pointing out how people like her are the reason there’s discrimination against octolings in the first place, due to her treating others like trash and inflicting suffering onto others. He then closes with the statement that inklings and octolings don’t fight each over, but that inklings and octolings fight her.
  • Relationship Upgrade: He and Natalie start dating closer to the end of the first story.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: He believes that killing others isn’t the answer, and he hasn’t permanently killed a single person in the series, as he rather just knocks them out or kills them near a respawn point so they respawn after their death.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Cyalux used to be friends before Cyalux revealed himself as the octobusters leader and coldly betrayed him.

    Natalie Octarine

Natalie Octarine

Click for her Agent gear

The co-protagonist of the stories. She’s a feisty octoling tomboy, but when she first got to the surface, she was falsely accused of a crime she didn’t commit, which was later revealed to be a framejob. Once her innocence was proven by Samuel, she began adjusting to normal life, but she still faces discrimination problems. She will never let anyone lay a finger on anyone she cares about, and if someone dares hurt someone she cares for, she will be more then willing to fight them.

  • Action Girl: She gets plenty of action.
  • Badass Adorable: She’s referred to as cute quite a few times, and even her creator finds her cute. Despite this, she’s also a badass who’s willing to fight and join in on the action.
  • Battle Couple: She and Samuel often fight together.
  • Break the Badass: She is often dealing with nasty situations, from being homeless for nearly a year, to being brutally tortured by Scarlet; it’s enough to make her feel broken sometimes. She appears tough, but she’s quite sensitive deep down due to her past experiences.
  • Clear My Name: Aside from the main group getting framed for beating an inkling into a coma, her first goal is to clear her name after she was framed for a theft that was actually committed by Magentark Clover.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Downplayed. At first, she acts rather cold and aggressive, but she quickly softens up, and there are some rare moments (typically only around Samuel) where she is a complete softie.
  • Deuteragonist: She is the deuteragonist of the first story, and in the second and third, she and Samuel share the role of main protagonist. Overall, she’s the second most important in the series.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Subverted in the third fic. When the bomb station is about to explode with Natalie and Samuel trapped inside, they say their love for each other before passing out. Luckily, Jade rescues them in time, one minute before the station explodes.
  • Fiery Red Head: Downplayed. She has a short, fiery temper. Her hair is a pinkish red, so it’s close to red? Right?
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When she disarms Cyalux, he tries to kill both her and Samuel, but his splashdown backfires and kills him instead. She felt responsible for causing Cyalux’s death and was overwhelmed with guilt and remorse, apologising over and over to Samuel about it.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She also gives one to Lieutenant Obsidian. She harshly but justifiably points out that her past doesn’t excuse a thing she does, as she points out how both of their backstories are similar, but she isn’t going around murdering people, unlike Obsidian. She tells her a bad past is not an excuse to be a jerk, and tells her to stop making excuses for her heinous actions.
  • Relationship Upgrade: She begins dating Samuel closer to the end of the first story.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: She constantly curses, especially in the first story.
  • Tomboy: She’s very tough, willing to get her hands dirty, takes part in sports, acts quite aggressive and won’t go down without a fight.
  • Tsundere: She acts like a tsundere in the first story, where she repeatedly denies having a crush on Samuel, and Luke even calls her a tsundere.

    Luke Virigree

Luke Virigree

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luke_9.jpeg
Click for his Agent gear

Luke is Samuel’s best friend, and has been since the two were children. He’s a very supportive friend, and is incredible at most sports, such as Turf Wars and Ranked Battles. However, he is also quite prideful of his abilities, as shown many times. Like Samuel, he’s also pretty protective of his friends, and is willing to standup against bad people. At the end of the third story, he joins the Squidbeak Splatoon, and becomes Agent 7.

  • Adaptational Weapon Swap: The guy he's based on wields either a Splat Roller or a Splattershot in Splatoon 2 promotional material. This version of him prefers Brellas, just like Marina does.
  • Best Friend: He is Samuel’s best friend, and has been since childhood.
  • Fangirl: Gender-inverted: he is a huge fan of the Squid Sisters, expresses anguish at Octavio's past brainwashing of Callie, and only sided with the second Final Fest's Team Order because of Off the Hook's Marina.
  • Lovable Jock: While he’s a very competitive battler, and is quite prideful of his abilities, he isn’t an asshole about it. He plays fairly, will give opponents respect where it’s due, doesn’t show sore loser behaviour and is a very supportive friend.
  • Relationship Upgrade: He and Summer start off as friends, but then date at the end of the third story.
  • Tough Love: In a oneshot, it’s confirmed he has a tough relationship with his parents, as his mother is nosy and overprotective, and his dad is strict and tough on him. While they aren’t abusive, their relationship isn’t the best.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Cyalux used to be friends before Cyalux revealed himself as the Octobusters' leader and coldly betrayed him.

    Sylvia Turfora

Sylvia Turfora

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sylvia.jpeg
Click for her Agent gear

Sylvia is Samuel and Melissa’s mischievous younger cousin. She’s notorious for causing mischief, playing pranks, teasing others and being very wild and chaotic. Despite her troublemaker personality, she is a very caring soul.

  • Break the Cutie: She jumps in front of Samuel to protect him from a tranquilliser dart, which gets her sent to the concentration camps, tortured by Blakeson, and given substantial PTSD to recover from.
  • Class Clown: She always gets into trouble at school for her mischievous antics during class.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Gay?: In the third story, she mentions that she is bisexual to help Katelin feel less alone.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: She provides a lot of comic relief throughout the trilogy. Temporarily Subverted during part of the third story, when she is traumatised, but she does recover to her full self by the end.
  • Porn Stash: At the end of the third story, she asks the reader if they want to see her “homework folder”. Which we all know what she really means…
  • The Prankster: She loves playing pranks on others, and is very mischievous.
  • Reckless Sidekick: She acts very energetic and reckless all the time, even in the face of danger. A notable example was when she took off her helicopter seatbelt, and put her hands in the air as it was landing.
  • Shipper on Deck: She is constantly shipping Samuel and Natalie in the first story, getting very persistent every time Natalie blushes.
  • Tomboy: She’s a heavy turf war player, and is also into ranked. Not only that, but she’s also a heavy prankster, and has even spray painted walls before.

    Melody Rose

Melody Rose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inkchaosmelody.jpeg
Click for her Agent gear

Melody is a shy gamer girl, who suffers from bullying, most notably from the infamous Scarlet Spiker. She eventually befriends Samuel and the others, and helps them out for the rest of the series in gratitude for standing up for her. As the stories progress, she gets more confident, while still remaining quite shy. She eventually becomes a gaming youtuber, further pursuing her passion of gaming.

  • Adaptational Weapon Swap: The girl she's based on wields Splat Dualies in Splatoon 2 promotional material. This version of her is a charger main.
  • Face Your Fears: During the third story's climax, she faces off against Scarlet after she tormented her for years, and finally stood up to her directly, even kicking her out of a helicopter.
  • Gamer Chick: She’s an amazing gamer. She plays videos games as a coping mechanism.
  • Nice Girl: She is very kind once she warms up and becomes more confident.
  • Secretly Wealthy: She hides the fact that she's rich so no one asks her for money that will drive her family to hell.
  • Shrinking Violet: She is very shy and reserved.
  • Spoiled Sweet: She is from a wealthy family, has her own gaming set, and has a helicopter, but takes absolutely no pride in her wealth and hides her affluence so no one harms her family for money.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: She feels bad for killing an Octobuster, and staunchly avoids killing outside the defence of her friends.

    Ruby Diorite

Ruby Diorite

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inkchaosruby.jpeg

Ruby starts out as an antagonist. She originally wanted to keep octolings away from inklings, in fear of inklings hurting octolings, as she believed that all inklings were evil. Eventually, she came to a realisation that they weren’t all bad, and was overwhelmed with guilt for everything she did. She reformed herself by the end of the first story. She remains a hero in the next two, having left the octarian army.

  • The Atoner: She felt horrible for her past actions, and constantly tries to make up for them.
  • Character Development: At first, she hated inklings, and thinks that all octolings should be well away from them, as she believed that inklings were nothing more then selfish octoling murderers. However later, she realises the truth, and changed her mind. She began liking inklings more, appreciating them and even realised how horrible octarian society was, so she made it her goal to free octolings from the oppressive octarian society.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At first, she is a stern, ice cold soldier who is utterly dedicated to her work. However, later she is shown to have good intentions of protecting her race, and eventually realises how oppressive octo valley is, and that inklings aren’t all evil, leading to her redeeming herself and showing a more soft and kind side later on.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She redeems herself by pulling up the rope that Samuel was using to save Natalie, saving both from their watery grave. She even frees octolings from the underground by playing thr Calamari Inkantation to free them.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the third story, when Lieutenant Obsidian throws Jade into a flooded ravine, she jumps in to save her, and uses an inkjet to get Jade to safety, but at the cost of her own life.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She gets this twice. The first time is when she realised that not all inklings were bad, and felt horrible for chasing Samuel non stop. The second (and more notable) time she got this was when she realises she killed Cyalux’s brother (albeit in defence of others), and thought she was responsible for his descent into villainy, and the creation of the octobusters, which was a massive blow to her mental health.
  • So Proud of You: In the bonus part, her ghost was watching Jade be promoted to Captain, and she congratulated her, saying she earned it, giving a thumbs up in approval.
  • Tomboy: She’s a hardworking, dedicated soldier, who’s always willing to fight and is also willing to get extremely dirty.

    Dylan Octarine

Dylan Octarine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dylanoctarine.jpeg

Dylan is Natalie’s older sister, who’s role gets bigger in every story. He starts off as a minor character, then a supporting, then a major. He is an introverted hacker who is always doing his best to help Natalie out, and is even willing to help out her friends, and innocent people as well. He doesn’t trust Samuel at first due to him being his sisters boyfriend, but later he learns to trust him. He is quite reclusive and prefers to stay indoors, but this is likely changed when he gets into a relationship with Melissa.

  • But Not Too Bi: Is confirmed to be Bisexual by the creator, but he is never seen sharing romance with other guys.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: He acted pretty overprotective of Natalie, being wary of Samuel dating her. Samuel gains his trust near the end, though.
  • Playful Hacker: He’s an experienced hacker who is always helping out his friends by hacking anything they need. He even hijacks Lieutenant Obsidian’s speaker to insult her.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Even though he acts reclusive, he isn’t a jerk in any way. He deeply cares about Natalie and even her friends, and is willing to help them. This is especially shown in the camps, where he is deeply supportive to the others, stands up to Lieutenant Obsidian and is desperate to save Sylvia when Blakeson is torturing her, and even carries her away to safety after he rescues her.

Introduced in Inkopolis Chaos 2

    Katelin (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Katelin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/katelinsmile.jpeg
Click for her Agent gear and her former appearance

Katelin is a sweet, bubbly and affectionate octoling, who deeply cares for her friends, and is helping anyone out at any moment. She is especially affectionate towards Jade, as the two are dating.

She's secretly Agent 8 of the squidbeak splatoon, and trusts the heroes not to leak this, even introducing them to the other agents.

  • All-Loving Hero: She’s always trying to make friends and help people out whenever she can.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She is the most friendly and bubbly character by a long shot. She’s often trying to make friends, try new things and can act quite oblivious sometimes, except whenever she’s doing agent work.
  • Genius Ditz: She often acts clumsy and naive outside of agent work, where she becomes more professional and serious. It’s even stated that she always checks her weapons before using them to make sure they're working properly.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: When she is doing missions, she switches away from her childish side, and turns completely serious. She is also very curious, outgoing and willing to try new things, but will become quieter if she’s nervous.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Without question the purest character in the story. She is incorruptible by the villains, even after she regained her memories, which she should’ve done by now considering how long ago the octo expansion was. She is also kind to most people and shows no corrupting qualities.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She acts more affectionate and girly then her girlfriend, who is tough as nails and usually dead serious.
  • Nice Girl: She is nice and friendly to everyone.
  • Trauma Button: Because she narrowly survived Commander Tartar's giant blender, the sound of a normal one is enough to remind her of such and send her into a mental breakdown.

    Melissa Turfblu

Melissa Turfblu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/melissaturfblu.jpeg
Click for her Agent gear

Melissa is Samuel’s protective older sister. She constantly worries about him, and is very overprotective of him. It’s especially bad when she meets Natalie, and has the mindset that all octolings are evil due to having lost her best friend, auntie and uncle to them. After she is saved by Ruby from the Octobusters, she changes her mind, and realises that not all octolings are the same. She apologises to Natalie for being so harsh on her, and then begins to treat her like a little sister. She’s a very caring person, despite her paranoia.

  • Big Sister Instinct: She is very overprotective of Samuel, and as a result, she was extremely wary of Natalie being around him due to her distaste for octolings, but thankfully her distaste is later layed away.
  • Character Development: She initially starts out very distrustful towards octolings due to losing several loved ones to them. Throughout the second story, she does learn to trust octolings more and even starts dating one.
  • Control Freak: She is very overprotective of Samuel, to the point of her becoming pretty controlling. Averted once she learns to trust octolings, and her becoming aware that she was being a control freak.
  • Red Herring: She does act as a false antagonist due to her original anti-octoling views, and it is hinted that she tried to frame Natalie by putting a knife in her bag, but it was later revealed that Cyalux placed that knife there to try and make Melissa distrust her even more. She was never evil, just being paranoid and overprotective.

Introduced in Inkopolis Chaos 3

    Jade Grady

Jade Grady

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jadea3.jpeg
Click for her casual wear

Jade is Agent 3 of the squidbeak splatoon. At first, she believed all octolings were bad, but then came to a realisation that were brainwashed. She takes her job completely seriously, and acts as a leader when Cuttlefish isn’t there. Behind her tough exterior, she is a very caring individual, especially to her girlfriend, Katelin.

  • Butch Lesbian: Acts very tough, and hardly presents any feminine qualities. She’s also a lesbian.
  • It's All My Fault: She always blames herself if anything goes wrong, due to her guilt complex. A most notable example is how she blames herself for Ruby’s death, because Ruby sacrificed herself for her.
  • The Leader: When Cuttlefish isn’t there, she leads the squidbeak splatoon.
  • Lesbian Jock: She’s a lesbian, but she’s also a secret agent, and competes in turf wars and ranked battles whenever she’s not working hard.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When she realised that many of the octolings she killed were brainwashed, she was overwhelmed with guilt, as she realised she had killed innocent people without knowing, and she keeps trying to make up for it by helping octolings whenever she can.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: She’s an incredible fighter, being Agent 3 and all. However, she finds socialising very difficult, and finds it hard to talk in front of an audience.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: When she isn’t being a tough as nails leader, she's often very caring as well as protective.
  • Tomboy: Acts more like a guy then a girl in almost every way.
  • Workaholic: She takes her job extremely seriously, and often overworks herself.
  • You Are in Command Now: A few weeks after the events of Inkopolis Chaos 3, she is promoted to the Captain of the squidbeak splatoon after Cuttlefish resigns.

    Summer

Summer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/summeragent4.jpeg
Click for her casual wear

Summer is Agent 4 of the squidbeak splatoon. She suffered from abuse from her parents at home, but eventually moved to Inkopolis. She is a very witty inkling, always coming up with the best comebacks, and providing very much needed laughs in Inkopolis Chaos 3. She is also similar to Sylvia, as both can act quite mischevious and tease their friends.

  • Abusive Parents: Her parents were very abusive to her, often beating her and neglecting her which caused Summer to run away. When they died Summer didn't care and was happy about it.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Her primary sense of humor.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Behind her snarky attitude, she does know how to be a nice and caring person, does care for her friends despite how much she teases them, and deeply apologizes to Natalie for having threatened her with a slosher, having mistook her as an evil octoling.
  • Relationship Upgrade: She and Luke start off as friends, but then begin dating at the end of the third story.
  • Shed the Family Name: She cast away her last name over the abuse she experienced, and she can't bother thinking of another one.
  • Tomboy: Acts very sarcastic and witty, and is into competitive battling. She once spray painted a wall alongside Sylvia during the final splatfest to promote Team Chaos. She’s also a secret agent, which is bonus tomboy points.

Antagonists

Scarlet's Gang

Intoduced in: Inkopolis Chaos 1

Four Inkling bullies who frequently torment Samuel and his friends.

  • The Bully: They repeatedly pick on other students, particularly Samuel and Melody.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: All members of this gang, except for Jess, have red eyes.
  • Red Is Violent: They all have red ink, and they, particularly Scarlet and Jack, are vicious bullies.

    Scarlet Spiker

Scarlet Spiker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scarlet2.jpeg

Scarlet at first seems like your typical bully, but it turns out she’s far worse than that. She enjoys making others suffer, purely for her own amusement. At first, she’s just insulting or beating people, which is typical bully stuff, but it later escalates to committing actual crimes; such as framing Samuel, Natalie, Luke and Sylvia for beating an innocent inkling into a coma; just for fun. She’s a very dangerous inkling, not your typical high school bully.

  • Alpha Bitch: Sylvia states that most people in the school like her, despite her being a bully. She is very snobby and arrogant, has a lot of suck up followers and is a bitch to almost everyone around her. It’s likely she was popular for her appearance, even though nobody has ever commented on her looks onscreen, except for Summer, who called her ugly in a comeback.
  • Arch-Enemy: She is the most personal villain to the heroes, especially Samuel, and tries to kill them multiple times or trying to make them suffer as much as possible throughout the first and third stories.
  • Ax-Crazy: Underneath her unpleasant but calm demeanor lies a bloodthirsty psychopath willing to hurt or murder lots of people for fun and/or petty revenge.
  • The Bus Came Back: She returns in Inkopolis Chaos 3 after being freed from prison by Obsidian, albeit with blackmail involved.
  • Can't Take Criticism: When James criticises her, she slaps him in the face.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: She fully embraces her status as a villain and brags about her atrocities.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: She brutally tortures Natalie purely out of sadistic spite, by chaining her up, setting her shirt on fire, spraying her with waternote , and then cutting and beating her.
  • Fantastic Racism: She hates octolings for no apparent reason.
  • For the Evulz: She commits evil actions just for the heck of it, and enjoys every moment of it. She happily admits how evil she is, and takes delight in it.
  • Frame-Up: She frames Samuel, Natalie, Luke and Sylvia for beating an inkling into a coma.
  • Freudian Excuse: It's confirmed that she was neglected by her parents and admired fictional villains' ability to gain respect via fear.
  • Freudian Excuse Denial: Aside from Scarlet being obviously no longer insecure, she blurts out that she's long past her rough childhood and it isn't an important contribution to her evilness.
  • Hate Sink: Scarlet is portrayed as an absolutely horrible person with no present redeeming qualities. She is first introduced bullying Melody, then gets very hostile towards Samuel and Luke when they stand up against her. She then beats Samuel up in a forest as petty revenge, and when Natalie comes, she begins making racist comments towards her, making her even more unlikeable. She remains as a sadistic and racist bully for the first half of the first story, but then gets even worse in the second half, where she starts committing actual crimes, mainly torturing Natalie out of pure sadism and vengeance, and if that wasn’t bad enough, her actions in the third story where she slaughters a bunch of random people, including a child, should be enough to prove how she was intended to be as unlikeable as possible.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: She starts out as a typical high school popular bitch, but later she becomes far worse then that, becoming a full on criminal who commits evil actions just for fun, even claiming a body count of 11 before her well-deserved death.
  • Put on a Prison Bus: She is arrested and imprisoned after her initial defeat.
  • Sadist: She is highly sadistic shown by how much glee she takes in the torture and murders she commits and even admits to enjoying it.
  • Shrinking Violet: As a young child, she was very quiet and without any real friends.
  • Slasher Smile: She often bears a nasty smile while doing evil stuff, and shes even sadisfically smiling in the offical picture of her. Especially prominent in part 12 of the first story, where she threatens to cut Samuel and Natalie’s hearts out, then store them on her shelf, while bearing a sadistic grin, with her crazy eyes complimenting the grin.
  • The Social Darwinist: Part of her rant to Natalie implies that she perceives the world as a place where each person is either a heartless jerk or a helpless victim.
  • Spree Killer: Upon returning to Inkopolis, she grabs and murders eleven innocent people for the fun of it.
  • The Starscream: When Obsidian made Scarlet work for her, the latter was secretly planning to overthrow her, so she could use her powers to start a race war.
  • Teens Are Monsters: She’s only 16 in the first story, and when she returns in the third, she’s 17. Yet despite this, she manages to be extremely dangerous.
  • Tomboy: Oh come on, the way she acts is hardly feminine at all. She’s a psychotic bully who goes around causing as much suffering as possible, but also seems to enjoy sports.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In her killing spree in Inkopolis, one of her victims was a 9-year old.

    Jack Gladio

Jack Gladio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jackgladio.jpeg

Scarlet’s most loyal henchmen. He’s a nasty bully, and is also fine with all of her crimes.

  • Fantastic Racism: Like Scarlet, he hates octolings for no apparent reason, and hasn’t seemed to change his mind.
  • Hate Sink: A lackey to Scarlet, and definitely the nastiest. While not as hateable as his boss, he still helps her out with her bullying, and is shown to be an aggressive person in general, even trying to kill Natalie by throwing her off a cliff, while referring to her as “octo scum”. Unlike James and Jess, he never abandons Scarlet or redeems himself, and even calls the heroes “soft and pathetic” in the ending book, showing he’s not changed a bit.
  • Sadist: He enjoys bullying others almost as much as Scarlet.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He bullies both boys and girls. In fact, when about to throw Natalie off a cliff, he punches her in the face just for extra pain.

    James Axowe (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

James Axowe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jamesaxowe.jpeg

Another one of Scarlet’s henchmen. He’s also aggressive and cruel, but unlike Jack, he has standards. He is the only gang member with the balls to argue with Scarlet, which got him a slap in the face.

  • Even Evil Has Standards: After Scarlet threatens to slit Jess’s throat, he and Jess both abandon Scarlet entirely.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He redeems himself by the end of the third story by helping the squidbeak splatoon on a mission, by giving them the key they need to free Cap’n Cuttlefish, Callie, Marie and Bethany.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is the only member of Scarlet's gang known to reform and later helps out the heroes.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He bullies both boys and girls.

    Jess Rubrum

Jess Rubrum

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jessrubrum.jpeg

Scarlet’s most mysterious and shady henchwoman (ironically, the only other female gang member). She’s also a bully, and is fine with Scarlet’s crimes, but she does question her sometimes.

  • Enigmatic Minion: Very little is known about her relationships with her fellow gang members. The story even makes it unclear if she has reformed or not. While it’s likely, considering she abandoned Scarlet after a threat to slit her throat, she made no known efforts to apologise for her actions like James did.
  • Tomboy: She’s willing to get her hands dirty, and acts like a more reserved Scarlet.

The Octobusters

Intoduced in: Inkopolis Chaos 2

A group of racist inklings that believe that all octolings belong underground, away from inklings. They will resort to kidnapping and, on rare occasion, murder, to reach this goal.

  • Fantastic Racism: Their name says enough.
  • Would Hit a Girl: The way they grab Natalie and Katelin so roughly says enough. To them, it doesn’t matter, as they refuse to believe that octolings aren’t Always Chaotic Evil, so they try to get rid of them.

    Their leader (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Cyalux Clover

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cyalux.jpeg

Cyalux starts out, appearing to be a longtime friend of Samuel and Luke. But later on, it’s revealed he’s secretly the leader of The Octobusters. He hates octolings, and wants them to go back underground, away from Inkopolis. He does have a reason for this, as his brother was killed by Ruby, when she was defending octolings from him. But he refuses to accept Ruby killing him as self defence, and desires to kill her for revenge.

  • Believing Their Own Lies: Regularly spreads hateful propaganda about octolings, even calling Natalie a heartless seductress... and he’s believing his own word.
  • Big Bad Friend: Although he's the main villain of the second story, he was once a good friend of the heroes and even hides his true nature through much of the sequel.
  • Disney Villain Death: After his splashdown backfires, he falls of the cliff he was on, screaming as he fell to his watery grave.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He does at the very least seem to care about his late brother, wanting revenge on Ruby for killing him and continuing his ideals through the Octobusters.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Shows disgust at Scarlet torturing Natalie, despite Natalie being an octoling, the very species he hates.
  • Evil All Along: He at first posed to be a friend and a good guy, but was later revealed to be the leader of the octobusters, and the main antagonist the whole time.
  • Face–Heel Turn: He used to be a genuine friend of Samuel and Luke, and used to be a great person, until he let his grudge against octolings consume him.
  • Fantastic Racism: He started an entire organisation dedicated to getting rid of octolings. That should say enough.
  • Faux Affably Evil: While he does usually act nice towards people, that’s just hiding his true, manipulative, malicious nature.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: When he was defeated and being arrested, he tried to kill Samuel and Natalie with a splashdown purely out of spite, but the two get away in time, and since he used it on the edge of a cliff, the force caused the edge to shatter, causing him to die instead.
  • Laughably Evil: He is one of the funniest characters, both pre and post twist.
  • Redemption Rejection: Was offered to change his ways many times, and he refused every time.
  • Teens Are Monsters: He runs a racist criminal organisation at the age of 17.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He used to be great friends with Samuel and Luke, until he betrayed both of them over octolings.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Male or Female, to him, all octolings are scum, who need to get out of Inkopolis, and he is more than willing to use physical force.

Octarian Commanders

Intoduced in: Inkopolis Chaos 3

    Lieutenant Obsidian

Lieutenant Rebecca Obsidian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ltobsidian.jpeg

Lieutenant Obsidian is the final antagonist of the trilogy. She is the new leader of the octarians, and somehow manages to be worse then Octavio. Due to her horrible experiences in life, she grew into a delusional, heartless monster, who has a strong hatred for inklings, wanting to drive them to extinction.

  • Absolute Xenophobe: She was willing to destroy all life on the surface, INCLUDING non-inkling species, such as jellyfish, all because she hated inklings. She thinks only her followers deserve to live, but even then, she has executed some of her own followers just for being related to non followers, so it’s clear she doesn’t even have any regard for life at all.
  • Appeal to Inherent Nature: She thinks it's in the Octolings' nature to fight Inklings to the death, furthering her belief that she's in the right despite being a vicious dictator.
  • Believing Their Own Lies: She came up with her claims that Octoling are genetically inclined to kill Inklings, and that the liberating Calamari Inkantation is a brainwashing tool. Yet she’s convinced her lies are the truth.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: When she was defeated by the heroes, and left in her own bomb station which was about to self destruct due to the sabotaged bomb due to go off without launching, she realised she was badly losing the war, so instead of living in shame, she didn’t call help, nor did she try to escape, and simply chose to die right there instead of face consequences.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: She says this practically verbatim when confronted about killing Natalie's father.
  • Can't Take Criticism: She refuses to accept others question her rule, and will often have them executed for it.
  • Character Catchphrase: “It’s just how octolings are”, or “It’s how octolings are”, she constantly goes on about genes, and stereotypes her own race, to the point it’s become her catchphrase. It even becomes her Pre-Mortem Catchphrase.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: It’s stated by Ruby that she sometimes tortures for the heck of it. It’s even confirmed that she tortured an inkling she kidnapped from Inkopolis, then murdered her afterwards.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: She is this to Cyalux from the second story. While both are remorseless Octoling traffickers, and both are racist to the other humanoid species, they each have different methods to dealing with them. Cyalux simply wants to get rid of Octolings the "nice way" by forcing them out of their new habitat but not necessarily killing them. Obsidian on the other hand wants to get rid of Inklings the nastier way by destroying all life on the surface, (which not only includes Inklings, but also Octolings). Also, they both have different excuses for what they did. Cyalux wanted revenge on Ruby for killing his brother whom he deeply loved, Obsidian was bullied and not accepted by both Inklings and Octolings from Octo Valley and Inkopolis, which made her hate the Inklings and killed various people from both species just because she can. While you could still feel some sympathy for Cyalux, Obsidian positively sheds any redeeming qualities that could've made her excuse understandable.
  • Dark Action Girl: Against Samuel and Natalie at once, she holds her own exceptionally with her dual swords.
  • Dark Is Evil: She has black ink and wears completely black clothes, and is the final antagonist of the series and a ruthless dictator.
  • The Dreaded: She strikes fear into her prisoners with a simple glance.
  • Dual Wielding: A pair of swords is her signature weapon.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: But you have to admit. The way she just walks up to her own sabotaged missile without any fear at all, even though she knows she’s going to die and she lost the war, is pretty damn cool. She didn’t try to weasel her way out, nor did she cry, scream, curse or yell.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: She simply doesn’t understand anything good in the story. For example, she finds it absolutely hilarious that an inkling is dating an octoling due to her sheer racism, and fails to understand why the octolings such as Ruby are deserting Octo Valley. To this end, she sees Dylan as weak for his refusal to find and kill his own sister. She also makes a homophobic remark at Jade when she comforts Katelin after she used a blender to intentionally activate her PTSD. And yet, despite all this, she still sees herself as the hero and everyone else as evil.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Her grin in her portrait shows an additional fang on the bottom, vaguely mimicking the canines of a carnivoran, and highlighting how vicious she is deep down.
  • Fantastic Racism: She hates inklings with a burning passion, and wants them to go extinct.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She does act pretty calm and sophisticated around most people, but when she’s angry, she will often start angrily yelling and try to kill those who annoy her.
  • Final Solution: Her true plan is to destroy all life on the surface (which includes the species she hates and even some of her own), then recreate it all in her own image.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: When she explains that she was ostracized by both Octarians and Inklings, she gets called out that her tragedy doesn’t excuse her atrocious actions with Dylan even saying that she lies about certain parts of her backstory to gain sympathy.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Formerly a lowly Octoling, she climbed the entirety of the Octarian military's hierarchy.
  • The Generalissimo: She got her way into power purely through using fear. She only became an elite because DJ Octavio was sick of her killing his own soldiers, and she became the leader due to the other lieutenants/commanders fearing her and giving her all the power once Octavio was imprisoned, crowning her the new octarian leader.
  • Hypocrite: She hates Octolings who desert, but she deserted to Inkopolis herself when she was young.
  • It's All About Me: She cares more about her own goals and her own experiences then listening to others input. Her goal is completely selfish.
  • Kick the Dog: Has several moments of these.
    • First, when she captures Natalie, she decides to try and have Samuel executed in front of her just to break her down in retaliation for Natalie spitting in her face.
    • In a meeting, she callously admits to Natalie that killing her father was like an ordinary Tuesday to her, and then told her to shut up.
    • A few seconds later, she activates a blender in front of Katelin, fully aware that it will trigger her PTSD, all to get her to shut up. Then she proceeds to make a homophobic comment about her and Jade.
    • Her worst instance of this would be when she forced Natalie to watch the footage of her older sister being blended to death, for no apparent reason.
  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Obsidian checks most of the boxes. She climbed the ranks of the Octarian army via sheer intimidation, sets up concentration camps to hold those she captures, callously executes innumerable Octolings to make an example of deserters, desires a world where only her most loyal followers remain alive, and willingly dies on her own terms when defeated, just like Hitler did.
  • Never My Fault: She blames everyone else for why she acts like she does, even though she was the one who made those choices, and used it as an excuse.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When trying to recruit Natalie, she states that the two are the same, just because of their backstories.
  • Rule of Cool: In-Universe. The only reason she kept the title of Lieutenant despite being in charge was because she liked the way it sounded.
  • Sadist: She shows delight in hurting people she believes deserve it.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Natalie; both Octolings deserted to Inkopolis in hope of acceptance. Obsidian embraced her spite and never gave the Inklings another chance to accept her. To Natalie, she represents the impact of Natalie's own backstory and what Natalie could have become if she didn't let go of her past.
  • Shoot the Messenger: After a guard tells her that Natalie escaped, she shoots them and then brushes it off like it’s nothing.
  • Spree Killer: After many octolings were disgusted by her for torturing an inkling to death in front of them, she began to murder everyone who wronged her, but didn’t stop there, as she then started killing innocents, including Natalie’s father, before Natalie was even born.
  • Villain Has a Point: She tells the octolings in the squidbeak that “they think they’ve been accepted but they still face racism!”, and the truth is, yes, octolings have overall been accepted by the inklings, but STILL deal with some racism.
  • We Can Rule Together: She tries to convince Natalie to join her army, on the shaky grounds that they're meant to kill all inklings just because some wronged them.

    Sub Lieutenant Blakeson

Sub Lieutenant Jason Blakeson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blakeson.jpeg

Blakeson is Lieutenant Obsidian’s second in command. He is almost as bad as her, as he is ok with almost everything she does. Like her, he despises inklings, and desires to hurt them. He also shows a strong disgust at octolings deserting, and he has no regard for their free will.

  • Blaming the Victim: He coldly blames Sylvia for turning herself in to help liberate a camp, even though he willingly tortured her.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: He tortures Sylvia offscreen, and it’s enough to traumatise her.
  • Dark Is Evil: He has black ink and wears black clothes, and happily serves Obsidian in committing crimes.
  • The Dragon: He's Obsidian's right-hand man, assisting in her torturous misdeeds.
  • Electric Torture: He's implied to have tortured Sylvia this way, because she has a phobia of tasers after the saga's events.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He loved his daughter, and her death made him hate inklings even more than he already did.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Shows disgust at Scarlet being willing to let her gang members die in an explosion.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: In his final moments, even though Sylvia spares him and offers him a new life away from everyone else, he simply doesn’t understand that she is only trying to help him escape Octo Valley’s tyrannical scheme, and instead tries to kill Sylvia.
  • Fantastic Racism: He hates inklings, partly due to his daughter being killed by them, although the inklings most likely killed her in self defence.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He also acts pretty sophisticated, but deep down he’s a cold and ruthless man.
  • Redemption Rejection: Sylvia offered him a chance to run away and change, but he refused and tried to kill her.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His coldness is emphasized by his red eyes.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He is definitely sadistic, as shown many times, but is more refined in terms of his sadism.
  • Would Hit a Girl: How about torturing the daughter of those parents you killed years ago?

The leader of the team that Samuel was in for his school's tournament. She's very compassionate, welcoming Natalie into her team with open arms after Daniel left.

  • Girls Love Chocolate: Samuel states that she’s anywhere where there’s chocolate, and on her DeviantArt bio, it’s stated she loves chocolate.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: She injured her leg after escaping from prison, so she was sent home by her sister Jade. She even apologizes for this later, saying she would’ve fought but she would’ve only slowed them down.

  • Tomboy: She’s the leader of a sports team, and is completely dedicated to it.

    Magentark Clover (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Magentark Clover

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6d0774ee_08ce_445d_8567_f452b55e8788.jpeg

Cyalux’s brother, Magentark Clover, is the posthumous overarching antagonist of Inkopolis Chaos 2. He framed Natalie for theft, and tried to kill dozens of octolings that were trying to get to the surface. Thankfully, he is killed by Ruby. His death caused Cyalux’s descent into villainy, but such is implied to have retroactively weakened the Octobusters.

  • Absolute Xenophobe: His most prominent trait, willing to slaughter many Octolings trying to get to the surface, even to the point that Melissa says that if Cyalux didn’t create the Octobusters, Magentark would’ve and it would have been a more violent organization.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Subverted. While Cyalux greatly admired his older brother, the story portrays that Magentark didn’t really care for him, manipulating and gaslighting him into hating Octolings.
  • Fantastic Racism: He constantly filled his brother with false lies about octolings, driving his hatred of them further.
  • Frame-Up: He was the one that framed Natalie for the weapon theft.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: If not for him, Natalie wouldn’t have been framed, and as a result, she wouldn’t have met Samuel. Not only that, but his death caused Cyalux’s descent into Villainy, so if not for him, The Octobusters wouldn’t have been founded, so Luke wouldn’t have met Summer. Melissa likely wouldn’t have changed her views on octolings either, as a result of no octobusters for Ruby to save her from. As a result, if not for him, the majority of the events in the story wouldn’t have happened.
  • Hate Sink: Let’s be real. He gaslighted his brother into hating octolings, was responsible for Natalie being framed, tried to kill a dozen octolings, and even in death, his actions haunt the story, with Cyalux being so stubborn in believing octolings were bad, and Ruby feeling responsible for everything. Heck, even Ruby’s emotional breakdown in the oneshot “A Burden To Bear” really solidifies this guy as a scumbag, even though we never see him.
  • No Name Given: We never learn his name. Subverted in the oneshot, “A Burden To Bear”, where his name is revealed to be Magentark.
  • Posthumous Character: He is killed before the events of the first story.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Ruthlessly fought Ruby when she caught him trying to murder innocent octolings, and said fight ended him.

    Georgina Octarine (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Natalie and Dylan’s late sister. Despite being a soldier, she had a strict moral code, in that she refused to harm innocent people. Eventually, she heard the inkantation, and got lured to the deep sea metro. She intended to come back for Natalie and Dylan once she got to the surface, but Commander Tartar blended her before she could make it.

  • Posthumous Character: She is long dead by the events of the first story.
  • Sorry That I'm Dying: In the footage of her death, her last words are her apologizing to Natalie and Dylan that she couldn’t make it to the promised land.
  • Tomboy: She’s a tough soldier, like Ruby. There’s no evidence that she acts girly girly.

The owner of a cafe in Inkopolis Square. She’s a very witty, flirty and jokey octoling. Despite this, she’s a nice person to be around, making jokes to try and cheer people up. She tries to make her cafe more enjoyable for people.

  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: The way she acts seems very ditzy, it makes you question if she’s sometimes drunk while working, or in the middle of a hangover. In fact, she hiccups once while talking to the agents.
  • One-Shot Character: She only makes a physical appearance in part 6 of Inkopolis Chaos 3, where she is a cafe worker, speaking to Luke, Summer and Melissa. She does get a mention in the end credits, however. She also makes a return in some of the extra short stories.
  • The Tease: She often makes sexual jokes or flirts with others, and asks to join Luke, Summer and Melissas “Little Squid Squad” after jokingly asking if the three were in a threesome.
