Main Characters

    Yoshio Yoshida
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yoshio_yoshida_35752.jpg

The main protagonist. Yoshida is an unpopular student who is considered ugly by his schoolmates due to his short stature, almond eyes, and the X-shaped scar on his face, but is Sato's "favorite". As a result, he is hated by nearly every girl at school because of how much time Sato spends with him.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Torachin calls him "Yoshi Yoshi". See One-Steve Limit below.
  • Ambiguously Bi: While Yoshida does have romantic feelings for Sato which steadily grew as their relationship progresses, he still gets flustered over attractive girls like Tsuyako. However, this can't be said on the subject of guys since he has no interest in them whatsoever besides Sato (Probably a case of If It's You, It's Okay). Take Nishida and Murakami for example, both are attracted to Yoshida but the former is treated as an overly-friendly nuisance and the latter only caught his attention because he crossdressed without Yoshida's knowledge (but was still turned down anyway).
  • Beady-Eyed Loser: One of his defining traits.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: In his circle of friends, he's the Short to Makimura's Thin and Akimoto's Big.
  • Book Dumb: He's a poor student and frequently fails exams, especially if it regards English, but is shown to have more common sense than a lot of his peers.
  • Bully Hunter: When he was younger and used to be the tallest kid in his class.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He does eventually say it, but has a very difficult time with it.
  • Character Development: Yoshida was very conflicted about his sexuality in earlier chapters, and was still hopeful of someday having a girlfriend even while secretly going out with Sato. Ever since he was outed, not only is he more accepting of it, he's also more open about his feelings with Sato which he used to keep bottled up.
  • The Chew Toy: Poor Yoshida just can't catch a break. Also doubles as an in-universe example, as Sato explicitly loves to torment Yoshida because he enjoys seeing his "scared face".
  • Does Not Like Spam: Cannot tolerate spicy food. Sato likes to have fun with this.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: He got his characteristic scar while defending Sato from bullies.
  • Gayngst: Though it's gotten better, he's still shown to be a bit insecure about his sexuality and still dislikes showing affection for Sato in public.
  • Hidden Depths:
  • If It's You, It's Okay: He isn't romantically or sexually attracted to men, as evidenced by Nishida, and exclusively likes girls as any straight, hormone-addled teenage boy would. The only exception is Satou who had pushed him into a relationship but slowly grew to love him overtime.
  • Lovable Coward: He gets scared very easily.
  • Morality Chain: Served as one for Sato, who mentioned several times that he had a lot of dark, morbid thoughts growing up (and still does as revealed by his inner thought) because of being bullied, but doesn't act on them because of Yoshida.
  • Nice Guy: Despite some of his quirks, Yoshida is a genuinely nice guy who is always willing to help others.
  • No Hero to His Valet: The reason why Sato loves him so much is because he isn't afraid to stand up against Sato. And making "cute" expressions while doing so.
  • Non-Standard Character Design:
  • Oblivious to Love: He doesn't catch onto Yamanaka's advances until too late since there can't be two attractive guys gunning for his attention.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. There were apparently two Yoshios in his previous class, so Torachin calls him "Yoshi Yoshi".
  • Only Sane Man: Frequently plays the Straight Man to his schoolmates.
  • Repetitive Name: The nickname that Torachin gives is derived from his full name Yoshio Yoshida.
  • Security Cling: Grips onto and hides behind Sato if he's scared or embarrassed. He doesn't seem to realised this, denying he never did when Satou brings this up.
  • Tiny School Boy: He actually used to be the tallest kid in his class four years ago but didn't grow much, if at all, after that.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's terrified of ghosts, Haunted Houses and anything supernatural. The mere thought of it wrecks him real bad and/or would faint right on the spot.
  • Uke
  • Ugly Cute: In-Universe. Nishida is attracted to him because of his beady eyes, small stature and kind personality. The same goes for Satou although it was more of personal reasons.
  • Unwanted Harem: Despite his in-universe unattractiveness, he's been lusted after by at least three people, two of them being guys and Tsuyako, other than Sato.
  • Tsundere: Type B towards Sato.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Same-sex example. In a similar vein to how the girls view Satou to him, Yoshida sometimes openly wonders why is he even going out with Satou, bringing up good points like his twisted personality underneath his seemingly good exterior, right in front of him. Regardless, Yoshida doesn't really mean it and still loves him, flaws and all.
  • "X" Marks the Hero:

    Takahiko Sato
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/satou.png

The deuteragonist. Sato is the most popular guy at school and the object of every girl's affection, but he only has eyes for Yoshida. Four years ago, he was overweight and a frequent target for bullies, but Yoshida defended him. Sato loves Yoshida because of this, but also has a sadistic streak and loves to torment him.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: One of the reasons he's so fixated on Yoshida is because he defended him from bullies when he was overweight.
  • Bishōnen: Complete with Bishie Sparkles.
  • Broken Ace: Sato is tall, handsome, an excellent student, and the most popular guy in school. He was also an overweight Lonely Rich Kid who grew up with Abusive Parents and a Big Sister Bully, gaining a very twisted personality in the process.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Completely inverted. He's a complete gentleman to all the girls who show interest in him (even though he is quite annoyed by them) but is very openly affectionate and sexual towards Yoshida.
  • Character Development: Sato was much more sadistic in his backstory and in earlier chapters of the manga, but his tormenting of Yoshida has been toned down considerably lately, and he's grown into a much nicer person who is more willing to help others out. Lampshaded by the female Nozawa who lamented that the "super dark flame" in his eyes has disappeared and was replaced by the color pink after spending an entire summer vacation with Yoshida on a tropical island.
  • Chick Magnet: He attracts legions of girls from many schools due to his look, athleticism and polite behavior despite only has eyes for Yoshida. He even made a few guys question their sexuality when inflicted with a cold and thus is more affectionate than usual.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He really does not like other people hitting on Yoshida, and even tells him not to accept any Valentine's Day chocolates from anyone because he'll get jealous.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His emotionally Abusive Parents sent him off to a Fat Camp where he had to, among other things, fight off wild animals in order to lose weight, and it's heavily implied that he and the other campers were experimented on as well.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Dabbles in this every now and then.
  • The Fatalist: Back when he was twelve and severely overweight, Satou believes the bullying, his family's neglect and even Yoshida's kindness amounts to nothing in the long run and maintained a stoic, perpetually frowning disposition because of that. He drops this mentality upon escaping Fat Camp and meeting Yoshida again.
  • Friendless Background: Had been mercilessly bullied because of his weight and had no friends growing up.
  • Formerly Fat: Was overweight as a child and sent to a Fat Camp, where he lost all the weight and became the Bishōnen he is now.
  • Headlock of Dominance: Sometimes gives affectionate ones to Yoshida or whenever he has to drag him away.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: He comes from a well-off family, but had no friends growing up due to his weight.
  • Hidden Depths: It's implied that Satou has at least a civil relationship with his little brother, unlike the rest of his family. He never talks badly about his little brother and in the Volume 4 flashback, Satou's little brother is the only one with a face rather than just a kanji letter.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though he admits he's a sadist and enjoys tormenting Yoshida, he genuinely does love him, and is generally nice and civil to everyone else.
  • Morality Chain: Mentioned several times that he had a lot of dark, morbid thoughts growing up (and still does as revealed by his inner thought) because of being bullied, but he doesn't act on them because he thinks that will make Yoshida hates him.
  • No Hero to His Valet: The reason why Sato loves Yoshida so much is because, unlike his female admirers (and Johan), the former isn't afraid to stand up against his. And making "cute" expressions while doing so.
  • One Head Taller: Than Yoshida
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Tsuyako, his first friend at the Fat Camp.
  • Sadist: Though not nearly at the same level as Tsuyako, and he seems to control it for the most part—except around Yoshida. Unlike the stereotype, however, he's turned off by those who blindly obey or idolize him which is what drew him to Yoshida's headstrong attitude in the first place.
  • Seme
  • Shipper with an Agenda: He starts helping Azuma get back together with Nishida, mostly so that Nishida can finally leave him and Yoshida alone.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Sato only loves Yoshida, and doesn't seem to have ever had any romantic interest in anyone else.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: The majority of the problem in the series is because girls are attracted to him.
  • Training from Hell: What he had to endure at Fat Camp.
  • Unwanted Harem: Every single girl at school, except the female Nozawa, wants him. Later on, this extends to other female students from different schools.
  • What Does She See in Him?: After revealing his relationship with Yoshida to the entire school, every single one of his female admirers (and most of the male students) constantly ask this both in thought and aloud.
  • Yandere: A fairly mild example, but you still do not want to cross a line with Yoshida, as Yamanaka learned the hard way. He is, however, a lot more patient with Nishida, likely because while Nishida does try to flirt with Yoshida, he hasn't behaved inappropriately towards him.

Supporting Characters

    Reona Makimura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makimura.png

One of Yoshida's friends. He's desperate to find a girlfriend and lose his virginity but, much like Yoshida, is an outcast due to his appearance and earned the nickname "Doodle-face" because of his pimples.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To practically every girl at school, but especially Machiko.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: In his circle of friends, he's the Thin to Yoshida's Short and Akimoto's Big.
  • Determinator: Despite being constantly rejected, he still asks the same girls out every day.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: In terms of personality, he can be quite selfish at times and definitely is persistent but is nonetheless a good person at heart. However, he is rejected by every single girl he asks out. Finally averted when Machiko agrees to go out with him.
  • Butt-Monkey: Has it even worse than Yoshida in the bad luck department, especially if it regards his love life.
  • Foil: To the girls in their pursuit of love.
  • Given Name Reveal: After nearly fifty chapters of going without a first name, it's finally revealed to be "Reona" to which Satou lampshaded as shocking as seeing Makimura's unbelievably beautiful mother who said the name in the same chapter.
  • Gonk: Might be the only character who is genuinely ugly, though it's hard to tell due to how poorly drawn he is.
  • Informed Flaw: His pimples, which earned him the nickname "Doodle-face", are rarely ever visible.
  • Meaningful Name: He is nicknamed "Doodle-face" because his face is covered in zits but it's more likely of how he's drawn due to the absence of such zits.
  • Must Not Die a Virgin: Seems to be his prime motivation throughout the manga.
  • No Full Name Given: His first name has yet to be revealed though it was finally subverted in volume 12.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: He (and the rest of the school's male students except Akimoto) are supportive of Yoshida and Sato's relationship because he hopes that would make the girls stop pursuing Sato. Turns out not to be the case.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Zig-zagged. Makimura definitely cannot be compared to his Absurdly Youthful Mother's peerless beauty but he's noted to have a lot of her facial features including plump lips, wavy short hair, closed eyes, oval face and long nose. The only difference is that she's drawn more realistically to Makimura's cartoonish art style.
  • Stylistic Suck: Is drawn in an intentionally cartoony fashion unlike the other characters, likely to show just how ugly he's supposed to be.

    Hosaku Akimoto
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akimoto.png

Another one of Yoshida's friends. Like Yoshida and Makimura he's unpopular at school, but nonetheless seems somewhat more well-adjusted than them, and even appears to be in a relationship with his longtime childhood friend and neighbor, although he denies it.

  • Beta Couple: He is in one with Yoko (Not that he will ever admit it) and has the least problematic relationship in comparison to the three same-sex couples.
  • Fat Best Friend: To Yoshida and Makimura.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: In his circle of friends, he's the Big to Makimura's Thin and Yoshida's Short.
  • The Generic Guy: Has the least amount of characterization and plot relevance out of the main trio.
  • Nice Guy: Second only to Yoshida in niceness and usually served as either the co-Only Sane Man or fellow Chew Toy with Yoshida.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Despite being part of the main cast, he is drawn more cartoonishly with Black Bead Eyes and a round, heavyset appearance which is especially apparent next to Yoko.
  • The Noseless: Most notably commented on by Nishida describing him as a bowling ball.
  • Satellite Character: Doesn't get as much development as the other supporting characters, and seems to mostly exist to round out the trio of himself, Yoshida, and Makimura.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: Despite being just as desperate to have a girlfriend as Makimura, he insists that he and his neighbor Youko are just friends, even though she thinks they're a couple.
  • Shipper on Deck: Unlike the other male students, he is genuinely supportive of Yoshida and Satou relationship when Satou publicly announced they're a couple and even feeling guilty for not realizing it sooner.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Girlfriend: Despite his plain appearance, his possible girlfriend Youko is very cute.

    Tsuyako Ijuin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_103_li.jpg

An old friend of Sato's who attended the same Fat Camp as him. Like Sato, she is also a sadist, although she differs from him in that he gets bored with people who obey him. Tsuyako very much likes to be obeyed.

  • Action Girl: She did go to the same Fat Camp as Sato, after all.
  • Big Brother Attraction: She reveals to Yoshida that she is in love with her older brother.note
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: A more benevolent example than most...for the most part.
  • Birds of a Feather: Non-romantic example with Sato. Both are sadists from wealthy families, were overweight and then lost the weight at Fat Camp, and are now gorgeous.
  • Characterization Marches On: Tsuyako's sadism was an Informed Attribute in her first appearance. In her second appearance she kidnaps Yoshida, Sato, Makimura, and Akimoto and leaves them stranded on a deserted island, and in her third appearance kidnaps Yoshida and various chefs from around the world so that they can make perfect Valentine's Day chocolates for her.
  • Distaff Counterpart: To Sato.
  • Dominatrix: She implies that this is her brand of sadism. Later confirmed when she kidnaps various male celebrity chefs.
  • Easily Forgiven: She's done some pretty shady things, including kidnapping Yoshida on multiple occasions, stranding him and Satou on a deserted island for an entire summer and blackmailing Satou into seducing her brother's fiancee, but neither of them seems to mind much.
  • Exotic Eye Designs:
  • Formerly Fat: Same case as Sato.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: She has no romantic interest in Sato, but the two of them still have a close bond due to their shared history.
  • Rich Bitch: She's normally pleasant and doesn't really flaunt her wealth, but she definitely uses it to forward her sadistic tendencies.
  • Sadist: A much more extreme example than Sato.
  • Secret-Keeper: For a while, she was the only person who knew about Yoshida and Sato's relationship.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's very tall and beautiful.
  • Token Evil Teammate: She's generally on good terms with Yoshida and Sato, but that hasn't stopped her from doing some questionable things to them.

    Seijuro Nishida
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_49_0.png

An openly gay student who is also in love with Yoshida. He is the exact opposite of Sato in character, as he is earnest, friendly, helpful, and even heroic. However, he refuses to back down on Yoshida even though he knows he and Satou are an item.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To Yoshida.
  • Accidental Kiss: With his ex-boyfriend Azuma.
  • The Ace: He's an extremely likable guy who is constantly helping, even saving, others.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Yoshida is already dating Sato and obviously doesn't reciprocate his feelings.
  • Bishōnen: He's tall, slender, and handsome like Sato.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Before it became public knowledge that Sato and Yoshida are dating, Nishida and Sato's constant fighting over Yoshida was interpreted by the other students as this, with Nishida as the Boke and Sato as the Tsukkomi.
  • Cheerful Child: Is shown to have been this in flashbacks.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He's constantly helping those in need, even from perilous situations, and absolutely cannot refuse a cry for help. Sato uses this to his advantage whenever he needs to get rid of Nishida.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Type A towards Yoshida.
  • Foil: Sato's exact opposite in every way.
  • The Glomp: Tries to so towards Yoshida whenever they meet but Yoshida dodges out of the way before he could even attempt it.
  • Has a Type: Nisida digs short guys which is why he is attracted to Yoshida and previously Azuma until his growth spurt kicks in. Deconstructed with him being attracted to both people who fit his type and can't decide between them, namely Yoshida and Azuma.
  • Hero Antagonist: He's a brave and heroic young man who is nonetheless actively trying to break up the main couple.
  • Heel Realization: Gets hit with this after realizing that Azuma moving on isn't making him happy like it's supposed to, and that trying to steal Yoshida from Sato is a pretty scummy thing to do.
  • Hypocrite: Nishida accuses Satou of "two-timing Yoshida with a ton of girls", even though it's painfully obvious that it's not the case, and declares he is the one right for Yoshida. Then Azuma enrolls into the school which makes his heart go out of whack from having equally strong romantic feelings for both.
  • Keet: Was especially this as a child, and still is as a teenager.
  • Love at First Sight: As Yoshida is exactly his type, Nishida fell hard the moment he laid eyes on him on the first day of school. Unfortunately for him, Satou got to Yoshida first and both later proved his Second Love is nothing but infatuation given he still holds a flame for Azuma.
  • Nice Guy: He's very friendly and likable, and is always helping others.
  • The Rival: To Sato for Yoshida's affection.
  • Second Love: Yoshida. His first was Azuma.

    Yamanaka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yamanaka.png

Formerly the second most popular guy at school after Sato, Yamanaka made a pass on Yoshida which resulted in Sato spreading rumors about him being a pervert in retaliation, and his popularity quickly plummeted after that.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Was briefly this to Yoshida.
  • Attempted Rape: Possibly attempted this on Yoshida, and later on Torachin. Though unlike the former, the latter is Played for Laughs.
  • Bishōnen: He was second only to Sato, after all.
  • Butt-Monkey: After being outed as a pervert and subsequently losing his popularity, he is constantly on the receiving end of some sort of abuse.
  • Depraved Bisexual: He mostly hits on girls, but still forces himself on Yoshida anyway. And even after he starts going out with Torachin, he still hits on girls.
  • Destructive Romance: His relationship with Torachin is nothing but toxic on both sides. Yamanaka is constantly unfaithful by hitting on every girl he meets, especially those who don't know his reputation, mooches off Torachin and finds unsavory ways to get laid. In response, Torachin is not hesitant to beat him into a bloody pulp every single time he becomes heartbroken. Combine with the two's reputations, they have no one who would love them back but each other, bringing upon a nasty bout of co-dependency.
  • Easily Forgiven: While still wary of him, Yoshida doesn't seem to hold much of a grudge against him. Torachin is also still going out with him, even though Yamanaka continues to hit on girls and even abducted him once.
  • Hated by All: Once rumors about him and his perversion start spreading, his popularity hits rock bottom. Torachin is the only one who hasn't loathed him.
  • Jerkass: He's a shameless pervert with few redeeming qualities, and even kidnapped his own boyfriend once!
  • Love Redeems: He's still a major creep, but his relationship with Torachin has made him a slightly better person. Emphasis on the slightly.
  • The Masochism Tango: He hits on other people, which caused Torachin to get jealous and beat him up. Sometimes the routine changed by having him do something caring... With an incredibly screwed-up method that makes Torachin mad and beats him up again.

    Toranosuke "Torachin" Takahashi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_71_li.jpg

An old friend of Yoshida's from junior high, who he nicknamed "Torachin". He has an intimidating appearance which makes people think he's a thug, but in actuality is a sweet guy and seemingly in a relationship with Yamanaka.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Yoshida calls him "Torachin" (See One-Steve Limit below).
  • Alliterative Name: There's two "T"s in Toranosuke Takahashi.
  • Animal Motifs: He has a bit of a dog-like appearance.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Just because he's not really a thug doesn't mean he won't beat the crap out of you if you cross him.
  • Bound and Gagged: And then Chained to a Bed by Yamanaka. He quickly escapes and then beats Yamanaka up.
  • Delinquent Hair
  • Destructive Romance: His relationship with Torachin is nothing but toxic on both sides. Yamanaka is constantly unfaithful by hitting on every girl he meets, especially those who don't know his reputation, mooches off Torachin and finds unsavory ways to get laid. In response, Torachin is not hesitant to beat him into a bloody pulp every single time he becomes heartbroken. Combine with the two's reputations, they have no one who would love them back but each other, bringing upon a nasty bout of co-dependency.
  • Face of a Thug: Has a permanent scowl and prominent fangs.
  • Gentle Giant: Most of the time.
  • The Masochism Tango: Yamanaka hits on other people, which caused him to get jealous and beat Yamanaka up. Sometimes the routine changed by having Yamanaka do something caring... With an incredibly screwed-up method that makes him mad and beats Yamanaka up again.
  • Morality Pet: The few times Yamanaka hasn't been a completely horrible person have been with him.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Has delivered many of these to Yamanaka.
  • Nice Guy: He looks intimidating and is easy to anger, but is usually nice and gentle.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. There were two Toranosukes in his class, which is why Yoshida nicknamed him Torachin.
  • What Does He See In Him?: Yamanaka isn't the best boyfriend material for Torachin as the former hits on other people in spite of their relationship and mooches off the latter. Yoshida even outright tells him he should just break up with Yamanaka already after the love hotel stunt.

    The Nozawa Twins
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_70_li.jpg
A brother and sister duo who run the school's art club. They're extremely passionate about art and are obsessed with drawing Yoshida and Sato, much to their annoyance.
  • Bishōnen: The male Nozawa is just as pretty as his sister.
  • Catchphrase: Both have the tendency to say "I want to draw!" and sometimes other variations whenever they are in the zone (The drawing zone that is).
  • Half-Identical Twins: Minus the height difference (the male twin is taller) and the flipped hair, they look nearly identical.
  • Hidden Depths: They are shown to be incredibly perceptive, especially towards subjects they consider interesting like Yoshida or Sato. This is hidden behind their eccentric Nightmare Fetishist interest and enthusiasm toward art.
  • Hot-Blooded: Both of them when it comes to their art.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Both of them are shown to be very clingy and persistent towards subjects they find interesting, which notably include Sato and Yoshida.
  • Only One Name: Their real names were never disclosed anywhere in the manga or official supplementary material. As such, they're called "Older Sister/Female Nozawa" and "Younger Brother/Male Nozawa" respectively.
  • Only Sane Man: Believe it or not, but the two of them are often among the few to not get involved in whatever crazy shenanigans the other students are currently up to, and sometimes provide a voice of reason.
  • Sibling Seniority Squabble: The female Nozawa is the older twin.
  • Single-Minded Twins: For the most part, although the male twin is a bit calmer and collected than his sister.
  • True Art Is Angsty: In-Universe. They express joy whenever they encounter a situation filled with suffering and wanting to draw it. Most notable is when the entire female student population fainted after Sato publicly reveals his relationship with Yoshida.

    Arima Machiko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_64_li.jpg
The president of the student council. Like the rest of the girls, she is in love with Sato but keeps it a secret and uses her position to organize various competitions she has a chance of winning where the reward is spending alone time with Sato.
  • Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Is the president of one in the school, made more powerful since Machiko is the only member if indicated by the barren council room she occupies.
  • Academic Athlete: Not only is she a top student, but she's also shown to be a great runner and swimmer.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: As the president, she has to maintain a professional and amiable front, but is absolutely ruthless inside.
  • Broken Ace: Beautiful, intelligent, and athletic— A triple threat in addition to single-handedly running the student council as president. But like all the other girls at school, she is madly in love with Sato and it's taken quite a toll on her mental state
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Seems to be headed in this direction as of the latest volume. She agrees to go out on a date with Makimura just to make him suffer, but ends up feeling guilty about it and even starts to warm up to him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She may be as boy-crazy for Satou as everyone else in school with the double X chromosome but Machiko will not stoop so low as to overstep his boundaries and resists the urge to act on her unwanted, ravenous feelings well.
  • Ignored Epiphany: During the triple pool date with Makimura, she witnesses how happy Satou is when he is near Yoshida and wishes she can have that for herself, with all signs point to that she might reciprocate Makimura's affection... only for him to hit on another girl and made her more determined to win Satou over than ever.
  • Iron Lady
  • Rigged Contest: Is fond of organizing these so that she can win a date with Sato. Although it should be noted that the contests aren't actually rigged—she just has a very high chance of winning them.

    Murakami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_46_li.jpg
The second most popular guy in school after Yamanaka has fallen from grace. He secretly enjoys cross-dressing and thinks he makes a better-looking girl than any of the others at school.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: When posing as Satou's girlfriend, he's such a head-turning beauty that "she" stole the hearts of every boy in school and broke the hearts of every girl in school upon realizing they can never compete with that.
  • Narcissist: The sole reason for his cross-dressing is that he believes he looks way cuter than any girl imaginable.
  • Put on the Bus: He hasn't been seen since chapter 27 after Yoshida gently put down his advances a second time.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Murakami can make a very convincing and incredibly attractive girl with just schoolgirl uniforms, a wig and makeup. He uses the disguise to trick Yoshida into agreeing to become his boyfriend.

    Takeru Azuma
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_69_li.jpg
A New Transfer Student who is initially hostile towards Yoshida, and is later revealed to have previously been in a relationship with Nishida and is still in love with him. As a result, he considers Yoshida a rival.
  • Accidental Kiss: Has one with Nishida.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: He's in love with Nishida, and they even used to go out when they were younger, but Nishida isn't attracted to him anymore because he likes shorter guys.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Used to be one of the shortest kids in his class and wished he could be taller, even though Nishida liked him short. He then went through a massive growth spurt and is now one of the tallest in his class, and he hates it.
  • The Bully: He's really nasty to Yoshida at first. Later revealed to be because he's jealous of Nishida's love for him.
  • Defrosting Ice King: He's pretty cold at first, but Sato helps him warm up.
  • Height Angst: Went through a tremendous growth spurt and is now one of the tallest kids in his class, and hates it because Nishida prefers shorter boys.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: His first appearance has him distracted by Satou's good look after the latter confronts him.
  • Foil: To Yoshida. He used to be short and is now enormously tall. And while Yoshida doesn't reciprocate Nishida's feelings, Takeru is in love with him.
  • No Social Skills: The first thing he does at his new school is insult Yoshida in front of the entire class, and it's later shown that he's not very good at communicating with people in general.
  • Not So Stoic: Appears to be a coldhearted Jerkass at first, but is then revealed to actually be very emotional.
  • The Rival: Yoshida has no real interest in Nishida, but Takeru still considers him one.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: To Nishida.

    The Girls
Consisting of nearly the entire female population of Satou and Yoshida's school, they're collectively a bunch of extremely determined, thirsty vixens vying for the former's attention and intensely hating the latter for being so close to and later in a relationship with him.

In General

  • Abhorrent Admirer: They're all this to Satou and boy does it show, being so relentless in their pursuits for him and the measures they would go that it gives Makimura a run for his money.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Unwanted Harem where the "Unwanted" part is levelled to toxic degrees. The girls are treated as a joke in the manga but are consistently one of if not the main problems the Official Couple has to face in their relationship. First off is how they superficially view Satou as a flawless being based on his looks instead of getting to actually know him. Satou, likewise, can't form any genuine friendships with them due to their constant demand through bribery and manipulation for his maximum attention whether he wants to or not (And it's always the latter). They see Yoshida as not a romantic rival but as an obstacle to aggressively bully and on the subject of girls from different schools, they won't hesitate to severely injure them as the Clingy Jealous Girls they are. Any sort of realization or undeniable evidence that Satou always and will be devoted to only Yoshida, they deluded themselves back to this unhealthy mindset and start the process again. The best part of it all is that the girls expect Satou to return their feelings like he wasn't happy with his mutual relationship with Yoshida who in spite of knowing his true self, still deeply cares for him.
  • Enemy Mine: The girls all have the singular goal of becoming Satou's girlfriend so it's an all-out warzone for his love. However, the few things that unite them are Yoshida, who is a walking reminder that they're clearly fighting a losing battle, and Satou-infatuated outsiders, mainly female students from other school districts, both of which they abused with a burning hatred.
  • Fainting: Of the emotional type which was done so frequently, it becomes a Running Gag. They'll slumped to the floor in over-excitement or depression in the hallway allowing people to literally walk all over them by accident.
  • Five Stages of Grief: Their attempts to date Satou is what caused them to be both emotionally and constantly trapped in four out of the five stages.
    • Denial - Ignores Satou's public display of affection towards Yoshida and outright refuses to acknowledge the romantic relationship between the two once outed.
    • Anger - Takes out all their frustration onto Yoshida by routinely insulting him to his face so much that it's borderline verbal abuse. If it regards other rivals, like female students from nearby schools, the girls become aggressively protective around Satou and violently beat the crap outta them when necessary.
    • Bargaining - You can smell their desperation from the next continent over. Whether it's showering Satou with expensive, elaborate gifts he'll never appreciate or using every excuse in the book just to hang out without considering his feelings. This stage is the most prominent which makes them more and more pathetic with every appearance.
    • Depression - None other than their repetitive collapse to the floor in defeat though they can quickly get back on their feet and do it all over again. Their longest bout lasted an entire day when Satou outed his relationship with Yoshida.
    • What sets the girls' predicament apart from the Hollywood version is that the stage for acceptance (where they finally move on and date someone else) does not exist which is why they are perpetually stuck in a vicious, never-ending cycle of heartache.
  • Flanderization: They probably had well-adjusted, normal lives with average grades, interests and boyfriends until Satou came (or rather re-entered) into the picture. From that moment on, any resemblance of what the girls used to be went sailing out of the window and burst into flames to make way for Satou-centric personality traits and motives.
    • This is even at the start of the manga when the girls were already infatuated with Satou. The earliest chapters had them just being angry at Yoshida and simply asking Satou out (and getting rejected) normally but by volume twelve, they're absolute psycho stalkers who mobbed Satou every waking moment in school while trampling anyone who stands in the way of their non-existent relationship. This can be justified by them growing more obsessive and desperate as Sato making clearer and clearer that he isn't interested.
  • Flat Character: None of the girls have any defining character traits besides the fact they madly love Satou to the point they disregard the rest of the boys who'll willingly and easily date them. This also goes hand-in-hand with their Satellite Character status as they hopelessly try to be promoted to Satellite Love Interest.
  • Hate Sink: They not only see Satou as an object of affection to constantly harass for and treat others like crap, especially when taking out their aggression on Yoshida, but continue to act this way after Satou reveals his relationship with Yoshida in hopes of them taking a hint.
  • Incompatible Orientation: What does it take for these girls to finally get the picture that Satou, the love of their life, "soulmate" and "future boyfriend", is (a) completely uninterested in anyone else other than Yoshida, (b) in a mostly stable and loving relationship with him since the beginning and (c) makes it clear by outing said relationship in hopes of them backing down.
  • Irony: A double case regarding their efforts in "winning over" Satou.
    • They sacrifice everything, namely their love life, and bend over backwards to spend every waking moment courting Satou. Unaware Satou is secretly a sadist who, unlike the stereotype, is absolutely turned off by anyone submissive to him. So the more they are devoted to him, the harder it is to actually date him (think zero to negative chance).
    • Their constant bullying of Yoshida in hopes he'll break up with Satou is actively encouraged by Satou himself (Within reason), making his love for his boyfriend stronger. At the same time, he'll coldly give a disapproving look at the girls if they go too far.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: They give Satou a damn good reason not to associate and invest time for them. Even the other boys who desperately want girlfriends as they want Satou find them disturbing and terrifying from the extreme lengths to express their one-sided love.
  • No Name Given: In spite of the manga being well into its twelve-year run, only four girls were actually named out of the entire school district.
  • Only Six Faces: Aside from their hairstyles, the girls are virtually impossible to tell apart which signifies how interchangeable and flat they all are.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Although they would still express admiration for other attractive guys, their hearts reign true for Satou and only him. Unfortunately for them, or fortunately depending on your attitude towards them, Satou rejects them on a daily basis due to, you know, being in an open relationship with a guy.
  • Squee: The girls' default form of expressing their attraction towards Satou.
  • Wingding Eyes: Hearts whenever they look lustingly at Satou.

Koike

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_39_li_1.jpg
The cutest girl in Yoshida's classroom whom he had a crush on before she was never seen again.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: From the second chapter onwards, Koike was never seen or even mentioned in spite of being in the same class as Yoshida and Satou.
  • Dropped After the Pilot: Never appears after the original one-shot that is chapter one which was strange since she plays a huge role in inadvertently bringing Satou and Yoshida together and the next chapter is a direct continuation from the first.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: In a way, if it weren't for her pestering Yoshida to find about Satou's favorite, the two would never become a couple (at least not this early on) in the first place.

Niko Teppozuka and Marika Hatanaka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_84_li.jpg
  • Camera Fiend: Niko who is an aspiring photographer and has compiled thirteen photo albums worth of Satou like a stalker to sell them around the school. She also crops Yoshida and anyone not Satou out of the pictures
  • One-Woman Army: Marika is the strongest girl and the best hand-to-hand fighter in school. This was why she was picked to be in Satou's group during the school trip to fend off other female students from other school districts by the droves.
  • Those Two Girls: Sometimes seen together as the only two named female classmates in Satou and Yoshida's class.

Mana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_105_li.jpg
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: The ring she purchased from a mysterious vendor somehow projects her thoughts and frustrations onto other people who would say it for her. Whether it's the ring's supernatural properties or a huge coincidence is up to interpretation.
  • Shrinking Violet: Mana's timidity is her defining character trait to the point she can only pine Satou from afar and is too afraid to voice out her opinions such that she bought a magic ring to do it for her.
  • Stalker with a Crush: A subtle, milder example compared to the rest of the hormone-ridden female students as she pines Satou from afar while the others swarm him, knowing she doesn't have a chance with him.
  • Token Good Teammate: She's the only female admirer of Satou to truly accept his relationship with Yoshida, despite her doubts and infatuation, and encourages him to talk things through due to an incident she involuntarily caused through supernatural means. Before that, she was repulsed at the other girls' attempts to get close to Satou, which involves uncomfortably surrounding him and demanding his attention, especially the ones not in his class and finds Niko gaslighting Yoshida uncalled for.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After her arc was wrapped up, Mana was never seen again in-story perhaps due to being in different classes and years as the main cast.

Others

    The other boys in school
The rest of the boys who aren't the named cast. They served as extras, crowd filler and the bulk of the school.
  • Butt-Monkey: In due to almost every girl in the school gunning for Satou, the guys are either immediately rejected on the spot or worse dumped the moment their girlfriends hear of Satou. Whenever an attractive girl outside the school visits, they get their hopes dashed soon after seeing the girl has business with Satou.
  • The Faceless: Unlike the rest of the cast, rarely will their faces be detailed further than simplistic eyes and/or mouths and the trope at worst.
  • Flat Character: They have even less characterization than the girls and do not contribute much or at all to the plot.
  • Foil: They and the general female populace of the school are nothing more than flat, background characters with non-existent love lives because of Satou (The former group are unable to find girlfriends because the latter group always goes after Satou, despite already being taken and disinterested). However, the boys, while infatuated just as easily over a pretty face, can handle rejection involving Satou better than the girls can. They fall head over heels for an absolutely stunning girl who happens to drop by in the school, only to be smacked in the face with the reveal she's only there for Satou. However, they are quick to accept and begrudgingly move on unlike the girls who believe there's no turning back and continue to relentlessly harass Satou. They are also drawn as The Faceless and have absolutely zero focus whereas the girls are nearly identical apart from their hairstyles but still are as detailed as the main cast and cause the major source of conflict between the main couple.
  • No Name Given: At least some of the girls subvert this whereas none of the boys were named at all and probably never will.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: They're fully on board and support Yosida and Satou's relationship....and like Makimura want the girls to finally pay attention to them and score girlfriends since dating Satou would be impossible at this point. Unfortunately, as luck would have had it, they're back at square one due to underestimating how absolutely determined the girls are.

    Yoshida's parents
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_55_li.jpg
  • Disappeared Dad: We've yet to see Yoshida's father as his job requires traveling overseas for long periods of time and had only appeared in a non-canon one-shot.
  • Happily Married: From the short time both Yoshida's parents were onscreen, they act incredibly lovey-dovey towards one another
  • It Runs in the Family: It's clear that Yoshida got his short stature (according to the photo blurb) with spiky hair and feisty but sweet attitude from his father and mother respectively.
  • Like Mother, Like Son: Yoshida is basically a younger, male version of his mother right down to their splitting likeness, attitude, how they end up together with a handsome man in spite of their unconventional looks.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Yoshida is the spitting image of his mother, right down to the almond-shaped eyes.
  • Unnamed Parent: Yoshida's mother is never named in spite of her multiple appearances.

    Satou's family

In General

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_45_li.jpg

Satou's Parents

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_47_6.png
  • Abusive Parents: Of the neglectful and favoritism kind who not only fat-shamed Satou and then sent him away to a hellish Fat Camp under the pretense of being an English boarding school without his consent but also doted on his elder sister and especially younger brother like crazy with parently love Satou was denied all his life.
  • Awful Wedded Life: They are not only abusive to Satou but also to each other with their explosive tempers leading to equally explosive arguments and fights being a common staple in the household ever since their wedding day.

Satou's Sister

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_48_li.jpg
  • Big Sister Bully: Her relationship with Satou is tense to say the least. Every single appearance has her viciously mocking him for his looks and lifestyle choices in spite of the massive glow-up and rubbing it in his face that his younger brother had essentially replaced him and he has no place in the family anymore.

    Yoko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_33_li_1.jpg
Akimoto's next-door neighbor and girlfriend (not that he would admit it). She is one of three girls, the other being the female Nozawa and Tsuyako, who isn't attracted to Sato as Yoko's a firm believer of inner beauty.
  • Big Anime Eyes: Second only to Yoshida, her eyes are drawn much bigger than the rest of the cast's realistically sized ones to accentuate her cuteness.
  • Girly Girl: From what Akimoto told his friends, Yoko has traditionally feminine interests like baking and sewing and is an absolute sweetheart.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Mostly appears whenever she's with Akimoto.
  • Sweet Baker: She enjoys making delicious cookies, chocolates and cakes for her boyfriend to eat, especially on Valentine's Day. Makimura is beyond jealous of Akimoto.
  • True Beauty Is on the Inside: What sets Yoko apart from virtually every other girl who wants romance in the series is that she finds people attractive based on their personality rather than superficial looks. This is why she's going out with Akimoto whose kind, sincere nature and gold heart outweigh his pudgy, cartoony-looking appearance. Inversely, she is repulsed by people using their good looks to get what they wantnote  or are two-faced in naturenote .
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Girlfriend: Youko is an all-around cutie who happens to be going steady with chubby, bowling-ball face Akimoto.
