Harukanaru Toki no Naka de
The Mikos
Motomiya Akane - the Dragon-God/White Dragon Miko (voiced by Tomoko Kawakami)
- Accidental Kiss: With Yorihisa in the manga.
- Chaste Heroine/Oblivious to Love: In Hachiyou Shou, most of the time; though it was required to allow for Multiple Endings.
- Identical Stranger: Akane-hime, from one manga/anime story.
- Ordinary High-School Student.
Morimura Ran - the Dark Dragon Miko (voiced by Houko Kuwashima)
- Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: Ran's Dark Dragon powers manifest as purple butterflies.
- Dark Magical Girl/Evil Counterpart: While the Mikos aren't Magical Girls per se, Ran could fit into this, being Akane's Yin counterpart.
- Mind-Control Eyes: In Hachiyou Shou, when in full Dark Magical Girl mode.
The Hachiyou
Minamoto no Yorihisa - the Seiryuu of Heaven (voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki)
- Accidental Kiss: With Akane in the manga.
- Curtains Match the Window.
- Kissing Under the Influence: Sorta. In the manga, a half-conscious (due to a fever) Yorihisa manages to accidentally kiss Akane when she gets too close. Might count as an inversion of Dude, She's Like in a Coma.
- Samurai.
Morimura Tenma - the Seiryuu of Earth (voiced by Tomokazu Seki)
- Curtains Match the Window.
- How Do I Shot Web?: In Hachiyou Shou episode 4. He later complains about this.
- Ordinary High-School Student.
Inori - the Suzaku of Heaven (voiced by Naozumi Takahashi)
- Curtains Match the Window.
- Only One Name: Due to being a street boy.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: But he isn't evil.
Nagareyama Shimon - the Suzaku of Earth (voiced by Kōki Miyata)
Fujiwara no Takamichi - the Byakko of Heaven (voiced by Shigeru Nakahara)
Tachibana no Tomomasa - the Byakko of Earth (voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue)
Eisen - the Genbu of Heaven (voiced by Soichiro Hoshi)
- Curtains Match the Window.
- Only One Name: Due to being from the Imperial family.
Abe no Yasuaki - the Genbu of Earth (voiced by Akira Ishida)
- Artificial Human: Yasuaki was created by Abe no Seimei and has the full set of issues that come with not being human.
- Asian Rune Chant: Several times in the TV series, complete with the associated Magical Gestures.
- Cannot Tell a Lie: This trait becomes an important point in both the manga and the TV series, albeit in very different ways.
- Catchphrase: Mondai nai ("No problem").
- Emotional Maturity Is Physical Maturity: Subverted in the manga. He is clever enough for his apparent age, but his understanding of human emotions is on the level of a small child.
- Non-Singing Voice: Amazingly, he still got an Image Song, despite being voiced by Akira Ishida, who generally avoids this kind of stuff.
- Paper Talisman: Uses ofuda routinely.
- The Power of Love: Implied (and pretty much stated directly in the game) to be the means for Yasuaki to become human.
- The Stoic: Although how much emotions he does have varies greatly depending on the version.
- Supernatural Angst: Over being an Artificial Human. And he claims to have no emotions...
- Younger Than They Look: Yasuaki is supposed to look 21, but is really only about 2 years old.
The Oni Clan
Akuram* (voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu)
- The Big Bad: From the main characters' point of view, at least.
- The Chessmaster: Even uses the associated metaphors at some points.
- Guyliner: Not really (probably), but in Ajisai Yumegatari he does look like he is wearing lipstick when compared to the rest of the guys.
- Mask of Power: Literally. This comes up near the end of Hachiyou Shou TV and subsequently in Oborosoushi, when the Hachiyou need to do something to depower him.
Iktidar (voiced by Kouji Ishii)
- Babies Ever After: With Seri in Hachiyou Shou TV.
- The Dragon: Explicitly identifies himself as one.
- Dual Wielding.
- Eyepatch of Power: Implied to have lost one eye as a punishment for disobedience; generally fits into the "experienced" type of this.
Shirin* (voiced by Maria Kawamura)
- Something about a Rose: Plain or weaponised petals, thorn-covered vines, etc.
Sefuru (voiced by Yuu Asakawa)
- Freudian Excuse: Revealed to be a halfling abandoned by his mother (who was from Kyou).
Other
Fuji-hime (voiced by Ikue Otani; in Maihitoyo movie voiced by Satomi Koorogi)
- Curtains Match the Window.
- Wise Beyond Their Years: She is basically a mentor for the team. She is also ten years old.
Kotengu (voiced by Junko Shimakata)
- Big Eater.
- Disney Death: In Hachiyou Shou.
- Killed Off for Real: In the manga, though it at least served some point.
- Martial Arts Headband: Sports it in one Hachiyou Shou OAV, when in Determinator mode.
- Sleep-Mode Size
- Snot Bubble: In one Hachiyou Shou OAV.
- Winged Humanoid.
- Youkai: Though a more human-like one, as the manga lampshades the fact that he lacks the long nose, one of the Tengu's traits.
Seri (voiced by Aya Hisakawa)
- Babies Ever After: With Iktidar in Hachiyou Shou TV.
- Only One Name.
Nue (voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa)
- Hellish Pupils.
- Involuntary Shapeshifting: Poison-induced.
- Last of His Kind.
- Suicide by Cop: Suicide by his childhood friend, Yorihisa.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: His default ability.
- Winged Humanoid: Of the "sprouting wings" type.
- Youkai.
Abe no Seimei (voiced by Dai Matsumoto)
Oo no Suefumi (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai)
- Dead All Along: This was never going to end well...
- Hellish Pupils: When he turns into an onryou.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: With Akane; read the spoilers above to see why.
* These two characters also appear in Haruka 2 with slight changes, but they are no longer the focus of the story.

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 3
The Mikos
Kasuga Nozomi - the Dragon-God/White Dragon Miko (voiced by Tomoko Kawakami)
- Action Girl: In a drastic difference from her predecessors, Nozomi learns to use a sword and participates in battles directly instead of just hanging around to purify stuff.
- Heroes Prefer Swords: The first time the franchise lives up to this trope. Nozomi fights with a double-bladed Chinese-style sword.
- Ordinary High-School Student.
Kajiwara Saku - the Dark Dragon Miko (voiced by Houko Kuwashima)
- Dark Magical Girl/Evil Counterpart: Unusually subverted in that while she still posesses dark powers, she is not only on Nozomi's side, but is arguably one of the nicest characters in the game.
- Divine Date: She was deeply in love with her dragon god, Kokuryuu, but he died shortly after they married.
- Warrior Nun: She renounced the world after Kokuryuu's death and became a nun, but she was recruited into Minatomo no Yoritomo's forces for her ability to exorcise onryo.
The Hachiyou
Arikawa Masaomi - the Seiryuu of Heaven (voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki)
- BFS: His weapon is a giant Odachi.
- Ordinary High-School Student: He was in the same grade as Nozomi before they were Trapped in Another World.
- Plot-Relevant Age-Up: Masaomi ends up spending three extra years in the parallel world due to getting lost during the transition; therefore, when Nozomi meets him there, he is older than her, even though they were originally the same age.
- Replacement Goldfish: The Taira Clan takes him in based on his resemblance to Taira no Shigemori, the deceased eldest son of the clan patriarch Kiyomori. Kiyomori believes Masaomi is Shigemori reborn, while Masaomi is so moved by the kindness of the Taira family that he attempts to use his knowledge of the Genpei War to reverse their fortunes.
- Talking in Your Dreams: Before Nozomi learns Masaomi's whereabouts in the other world, they meet in her dreams.
Minamoto no Kurou Yoshitsune - the Seiryuu of Earth (voiced by Tomokazu Seki)
- The Exile: Matches history in that he spent some of his youth Locked Away in a Monastery where he met up with Benkei, before going even further afield to live under the protection of the Oshu Fujiwara family in their city in the north.
- Every Japanese Sword is a Katana: His weapon is in fact a tachi, the predecessor of the katana.
- Historical Domain Character/Historical Beauty Update.
- Skilled, but Naive: He is a great warrior and leader with a talent rallying people behind him, but Yoritomo's distrust of him consistently cuts him to the quick.
Hinoe - the Suzaku of Heaven (voiced by Naozumi Takahashi)
- The Charmer: He is a shameless flirt, and a pretty effective one at that.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: It's implied that "Hinoe" isn't his actual name, but something he made up.
- Only One Name: And it might not even be his real name.
- Wolverine Claws: Fights using Katar daggers.
Musashibo Benkei - the Suzaku of Earth (voiced by Kōki Miyata)
- Chessmaster Sidekick: Benkei is, in accordance with folklore, a faithful retainer to Kurou (Yoshitsune). In a departure from folklore, he is also a strategist who will do what he has to do to insure that the Genpei War ends, and he decided that Kurou will be the means. Heaven help our heroes if he changes his mind...
- Historical Domain Character/Historical Beauty Update: Traditionally Benkei is portrayed as an exceptionally large and powerful man, but this game subverts the conventional portrayal by making Benkei slight of stature and delicate looking.
Arikawa Yuzuru - the Byakko of Heaven (voiced by Shigeru Nakahara)
- Dreaming of Things to Come: The Arikawa family apparently has Star Clan ancestry, and this manifests in Yuzuru in the form of prophetic dreams.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Yuzuru, with his serious demeanor, is definitely the responsible one; his big brother Masaomi is at best a downplayed foolish that borders on Obfuscating Stupidity.
- Improbable Aiming Skills: His weapon is a bow and arrows, and he takes the place of Nasu no Yoichi in a famous feat of markmanship.
- Ordinary High-School Student: In the grade below Nozomi.
Kajiwara Kagetoki - the Byakko of Earth (voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue)
- An Offer You Can't Refuse: Works as a spy and assassin for Yoritomo because Yoritomo holds his mother hostage.
- Anachronism Stew: His character design features a crop top, to go along with his no less anachronistic Onmyōdō rifle.
- Historical Domain Character/Historical Beauty Update: Kajiwara Kagetoki is known in historical dramas for his backstabbing, but the game recasts him in a sympathetic light.
Taira no Atsumori - the Genbu of Heaven (voiced by Soichiro Hoshi)
- Foregone Conclusion: The historical Atsumori is known in The Tale of the Heike for his tragic death. This Atsumori is also dead, although under different circumstances - but was brought back from the dead as an onryo. He holds people at arms length because of this.
- Historical Domain Character/Historical Beauty Update: While the historical Atsumori was noted for youthful beauty, this Atsumori has a very different set of attractive traits.
- Warrior Poet: Plays the flute as an indicator of courtly refinement.
Ridvan - the Genbu of Earth (voiced by Akira Ishida)
- Doomed Hometown: Covers his face to conceal scars inflicted when his childhood village burned down.
- Old Master: The oldest of the Hachiyou in Haruka 3 at a ripe old (for shoujo) age of 34, he teaches swordplay to both Kurou and Nozomi.
- Only One Name: Similar to other Oni characters in this franchise.
Other
Hakuryuu (voiced by Ikue Otani in child form and by Ryōtarō Okiayu in adult form)
- God in Human Form: Literally the god that the main character is priestess of.
- Emotional Maturity Is Physical Maturity: Seems to be played straight until he grows up, retaining some of the childlike traits - he is simply not used to being among humans.
- Really 700 Years Old: He is technically hundreds of years old, being a god and all, but gets a form of a ten-year-old kid (and later a twenty-something-year-old Bishōnen).
- Tagalong Kid: Until he grows up.
Taira no Tomomori (voiced by Kenji Hamada)
- Blood Knight: A fearsome opponent who lives for combat. Despite initial indications he's not Axe-Crazy per se. Fighting is just his preferred method of self-expression.
- Dual Wielding: Fights with two swords.
- Facial Markings: Small, un-commented-on markings under his eyes.
- Foregone Conclusion: The main thing Tomomori is known for in historical narratives is that he meets a watery death during the battle of Dan no Ura. And he almost always meets this fate in the game as well. Nozomi has to really overhaul the timeline to keep him from dying.
- Historical Domain Character/Historical Beauty Update.
- Warrior Poet: As is typical with the Taira Clan, he is also a highly accomplished buyo dancer.
Shirogane (voiced by Kenji Hamada)
- Historical Domain Character/Historical Beauty Update.
- Identity Amnesia: He is a vassal of Fujiwara no Yasuhira and cannot remember his life before coming to Hiraizumi. He is eventually revealed to be Taira no Shigehira, the younger brother of Tomomori.
Fujiwara no Yasuhira (voiced by Kosuke Toriumi)
Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 4

Ashihara Chihiro (voiced by Tomoko Kawakami)
The Hachiyou
Kazahaya - the Seiryuu of Heaven (voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue)
Ashvin - the Seiryuu of Earth (voiced by Akira Ishida)
- Warrior Prince: Ashvin is royalty of Tokoyo. Since the heroine is fighting to free her kingdom from Tokoyo, he's a Defecting for Love waiting to happen.
Sazaki - the Suzaku of Heaven (voiced by Tomokazu Seki)
Nagi - the Suzaku of Earth (voiced by Kōki Miyata)
- Deadpan Snarker
- An Odd Place to Sleep: He's unlikely to admit it, but Nagi loves quiet, out-of-the-way spots to take naps in.
Futsuhiko - the Byakko of Heaven (voiced by Soichiro Hoshi)
- Bodyguard Crush: His case is unusually pronounced.
- Samurai: More of a proto-samurai.
Hiiragi - the Byakko of Earth (voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki)
- Seers: He is the keeper of the game's Tomes of Prophecy and Fate.
Tooya - the Genbu of Heaven (voiced by Naozumi Takahashi)
Katsuragi Oshihito - the Genbu of Earth (voiced by Shigeru Nakahara)
- Blessed with Suck: Has overwhelming combat abilities, but the drawbacks are severe - they are simultaneously Cast from Hit Points and Cast from Lifespan.
- Stern Teacher
- The Stoic: To the point of having virtually No Sense of Humor.
Other
Ayuki (voiced by Yuu Asakawa)
- Wolf Man: Ayuki belongs to a race of anthropomorphic wolves.
