    Crisbell

Crisbell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cris1.jpg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cris2.jpg

Voiced by Kira Buckland

  • All-Loving Hero: Crisbell even feels sorry for enemies that have to be defeated. She felt pity for a slaughtering a machine she had to destroy, because the machine didn't even understand that it was doing something horrifically wrong.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: Narim is attacked by the Volcano Sisters in the tutorial, shortly after she awakens her powers.
  • Combat Medic: She wields a sword in combat while also utilizing healing spells.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Should the player lose against the Final Boss and chooses to give up instead of retrying the fight; Crisbell, frustrated that all her efforts were for naught, decides that the only way to stop Ardo is for her to go back in time, become the Time Empress herself, and ensure the previous Time Empress’ plan succeeds. As she puts it, she must become everything she hates.
  • Genre Savvy: She comes to believe the Time Empress is her mother. She is not; the Time Empress is actually Cris' future self.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: A magic Time Sword, to be exact.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In order to transport the Rena from the past into the future and thus essentially resurrect them, she sacrifices her own physical being to power Ardo's time machine.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Downplayed. She's well-regarded in most places after achieving her heroics, but has to leave her hometown because the local authorities blame her for the attack of feral goblins there and want to arrest her. Even then, it's only a select few in power who think ill of her.
  • White Mage: A rare main protagonist example. Unless you customize her a specific way, her general physical attack power is only decent compared to many of her party members. She makes up for it by being able to buff and heal the party, as well as debuff the enemies.

    Cristopher

Cristopher

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cristo_0.jpg

Voiced by Zeno Robinson

  • Black Mage: His main role is the party's first elemental attacker, using fire, water, and lightning.
  • Dumb Muscle: A rare mage example, but he often states the obvious and rushes into situations without thinking. Willhelm repeatedly insults him for both reasons.
  • Honor Before Reason: He nearly gets the party killed when he tries to save someone who appears to be drowning in the sewers of St. Clarity. Said "victim" was actually a sewer monster.
  • Informed Flaw: Willhelm often insults him by saying that he thinks with his stomach rather than his head, but in the story, Cristopher doesn't display any Big Eater tendencies.
  • Interspecies Romance: Gets a crush on Rysa, who is a member of a rather avian race.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Fights with a shield that splits into two wrist blades.
  • Magic Knight: While offensive magic is his specialty, he stills wields a fairly martial weapon and his physical attacks do respectable damage.
  • Posthumous Sibling: His older brother is dead by the time the story starts, and his memory is part of what drives Cristopher on.

    Willhelm

Willhelm

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wil.jpg

Voiced by Lindsey Vega, Alex Mitts (as Relo)

  • Crutch Character: While his physical attacks are very weak, he's very useful at the beginning of the game. He can heal the entire party, inflict high burst damage on a single enemy, hit several at once with his Yucandora seeds, or scan foes' elemental weaknesses, though they all require some setup and clever use of Crisbell's time magic to work. However, towards the end of the Neva Tulira chapter, his usefulness starts to diminish. Every other character joins with or gains access to spells and abilities that can do what Willhelm does, but better and more efficiently. It's the game's way of subtly discouraging you from relying on him since he dies in Crystallis.
  • Deader than Dead: He uses up the last few seconds of his life to stop the Time Empress from killing Crisbell and their companions.
  • Insufferable Genius: He's the smartest, wisest, and most experienced member of the party, but he's also kind of a jerk to anyone who can't match his intellect, with Christopher getting the brunt of Willhelm's scorn.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: At his actual age, he's an androgynous-looking man with long, flowing hair.
  • Mentor Archetype: Teaches Crisbell how to better use her Time Mage powers. He's a lot weaker than her as a Time Mage, but has much more experience with the art. Unfortunately...
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: He succumbs to this and sacrifices his life to help the party escape the Time Empress.
  • Older Than They Look: Time Magic has kept him in a young body, but he's clearly much older than that. A running joke is Cristopher clearly doesn't see this because no one has spelled it out to him.
  • Overrated and Underleveled: He's supposed to be an experienced time mage who has studied and perfected the art for years, but he joins the party at level 1 and the only thing he seems able to do is chuck Yucandora plants and seeds around. Justified. His time was taken by the Time Empress and he had to use his magic to revert himself to a child, losing access to his spells and his power.
  • Red Mage: He learns both healing and attacking skills via Yucandragora.
  • The Chosen One: As Chrono Master Willhelm, the Mother Superiors believed he was the savior chosen by the Lady.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: At first this is implied since he and Cristopher really disliked each other at the start of the journey. Cristopher is hot-headed while Willhelm is cold and analytical.
  • Time Stands Still: He regressed himself to a child and then time-locked himself so he can't age.

    JKR- 721

JKR-721

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jkr_9.jpg

Voiced by Daman Mills

  • The Big Guy: The largest character in the party, and the most well armored. He also has the most HP of any character, though that's partly to compensate for the self inflicted damage from Overheating.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: His sheer longevity means he doesn't quite understand the idea of forming personal connections with other people, since from his perspective, their existence is too brief and fleeting for him to really care about them.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Despite being over 3,000 years old, he wants to know why he is here and what his purpose is.
    • Flashback recording reveal even his creator didn't give him an exact purpose other than to make his own memories.
  • Explosive Overclocking: JKR-721 doesn't have a MP bar like all the other characters, and can use his powers without limit. But excessive use will raise his heat meter, which can have some explosive results when it maxes out. This implies that combat really wasn't his intended purpose...
  • Game Face: A mechanized faceplate covers his face whenever he goes into battle. It makes him look all the more intimidating.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: He punches at super-fast speeds, and his weapon is his robotic, gauntlet-like hands.
  • Heroic Build: Its hard to see, but K has a heroic and built frame.
  • Not So Stoic: He spends almost the entirety of the game speaking in a calm and neutral voice. It makes it incredibly shocking when he suddenly and loudly snaps "THEN WHAT AM I?!" after Crisbell refuses to strike him down after his boss fight, believing him to be more than just a machine meant to obey Ardo's whims.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Despite looking rather young, he's three-thousand seven-hundred and twenty-one years old.
  • Robot Girl: Of the more rare male examples. He's human enough that one might be forgiven for thinking he's a human wearing Powered Armor at first glance.
  • The Smurfette Principle: A male example. Among the Witnesses seen, he is the only "male". At least until Alexandre's introduction in the DLC.
  • Time Abyss: Casually mentions being thousands of years old, and visiting places he saw in the past can surprise him with the changes made to said places over the centuries. It also leads him to take a unique view of people and connections, since most he meets are very fleeting from his point of view.

    Zas

Zas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zas.jpg

Voiced by Lizzie Freeman

  • Bag of Holding: She's got a bag that holds a ridiculously infinite amount of random things (hammers, potions, bombs, and even chickens) that she can throw at her enemies. She even jumps into the bag when you choose to Defend.
  • Buffy Speak: A lot of her attempts at describing things fall under this category.
  • Fighting Clown: The bag she uses works on Hammerspace logic, and her basic fighting style involves pelting enemies with whatever random junk she pulls out of there. This is also seen in her block animation. As opposed to the others, who take a defensive stance, she substitutes herself with a goofy cardboard cutout.
  • The Gambler: Rather than a set effect like with other characters, Zas's abilities have multiple effects or degrees of effects they can achieve based on luck.
  • Motor Mouth: The girl gets seriously long-winded whenever she talks, as her mind tends to get distracted by tangents.
  • Ninja Log: Her block animation has her substituting her body with a life-size cardboard cutout.
  • Sibling Team: Potentially with young Kari if both are in your main party.
  • Stepford Smiler: She tries to keep a positive look in front of everyone else, even when she's distressed over her adoptive sister killing Azufra, who in turn was responsible for killing her adoptive father. She does sound obnoxiously oblivious to reality at times when the party is stuck in a serious mess, but that's only because she doesn't want to give in to despair.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Zas' explanation to Kari after Kari is de-aged and she wonders why Zas is older than her, Zas quickly tells her it's because of time magic and other shenanigans.

    The Sixth Party Member (SPOILERS)

Young Kari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ezgif_5_47ac789017.jpg

Voiced by Suzie Yeung

For information regarding her, refer to Kari Hudo.

    Adri

Adri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adri.jpg

Voiced by Dani Chambers

  • 11th-Hour Ranger: She joins your party at the very end of the game, shortly before The Very Definitely Final Dungeon.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She makes all sorts of robotic machines and contraptions. In combat, she utilizes rocket gloves, mines, and turrets.
  • My Greatest Failure: She was commissioned by Enzo to build a red crystal harvesting machine. Seeing an opportunity to get her work recognized, she immediately took the request, only for Enzo to reprogram her machine to slaughter the local fauna and even other workers who stumbled across its existence in order to maintain his stranglehold over the red crystal trade.
  • Promoted to Playable: She started off as just an NPC who was involved in some story quests. A free DLC made her a playable character and added her own unique combat mechanics.

Allies

    Matias

Matias

Voiced by Cody Rock

  • Cast as a Mask: Unlike Crisbell and the Time Empress, his true identity is kept hidden by the fact that he and his true form, Ardo, are voiced by different VA's.
  • Funny Animal: He is a cute little frog covered with stitched on patches and a top hat.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Along with being a Talking Animal, he is a talking frog that can 'hop' through time, with Crisbell's help. During the time hop, Matias becomes controllable.
  • Talking Animal: He is a talking frog.

    Mother Superiors

Mother Superiors

Elena, Mother Superior of Narim voiced by Natalie Van Sistine
Lucia, Mother Superior of Neva Tulira voiced by Cassie Ewulu
Lau, Mother Superior of Cinder voiced by Christina Kelly
Assan, Mother Superior of Crystallis voiced by Rhiannon Moushall

  • Big Good: Though there are multiple Mother Superiors, each is the guardian of their respective towns and are looked to for advice. That said, while powerful, they are not all powerful.

    Sophia and Armando

Sophia and Armando

Armando voiced by Tyler Carson
Sophia voiced by Marissa Lenti

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: To Cristopher in different ways. Armando has a tendency to make a scene due to his outspoken stance against St. Clarity's oppression of the lower classes, and Sophia constantly babies Cristopher whenever she sees him.
  • Hippie Parents: Armando is Cristopher's father and is an outspoken activist against Enzo's rule, with his unkempt hair and beard invoking the hippie stereotype. In the past, Sophia was also very hippie-like equality activist, though in the present, she's more willing to concede to Enzo's approach to ruling under the belief that the lower classes would eventually benefit from the prosperity.

    Paulina

Paulina

Voiced by Meredit Sims

  • Cool Ship: The party uses her shoe as a sail boat when going through shallow waters.
  • Magitek: As one of the Witnesses, she falls into this category. Her appearance is a statue of a giant woman. She also doubles as their mode of transportation.
  • Memorial Statue: Paulina is a living statue made to symbolize the unity between humans and Rena.
  • Skewed Priorities: She seems to be more concerned with your fashion sense (or lack thereof) than with saving the entire world.

     Rysa

Rysa

Voiced by Lindsay Sheppard

  • Bird People: Sort of. She doesn't possess wings or a beak, but she's part of a race that possesses very avian-like legs.
  • Damsel in Distress: After Rhallus's true nature is exposed, she takes Rysa hostage. During her boss battle, she also uses her life-draining abilities on Rysa in order to heal herself.
  • Interspecies Romance: She's from an avian-like race and has some Ship Tease with Cristopher, who is human.
  • Killed Off for Real: Failing to defeat Rhallus quickly enough and without healing Rysa will actually lead to her death. This also means that Neva Tulira will have its worse ending, with neither the museum or the academy receiving funding since the Oroitz family is left without a successor.
  • Non-Idle Rich: She's more than willing to journey down into the monster-infested lower levels of Neva Tulira's museum with Crisbell's party if it means finding out the true cause of her mother's death. And after she becomes the head of the Oroitz Family, she immediately gets to work passing a multitude of reforms to ensure equal treatment of all races in Neva Tulira.
  • Perky Goth: The color scheme of her clothing consists almost entirely of navy blue, but she's a lively sweetheart.
  • Spoiled Sweet: She's a member of Neva Tulira's ruling elite, but unlike several of her siblings and especially her "aunt" Rhallus, she's kind to those outside her family.
  • Young and in Charge: She can't be that much older that Cristopher, but she's put in charge of the family after Rhallus is defeated and the Oroitz Twins are put behind bars.

Villains

     Time Empress

Time Empress

Voiced by Kira Buckland

  • Big Bad: The main villain of the game.
  • Did Not See That Coming: For much of the first half of the game, she prided herself on being able to think ahead of everyone thanks to her time abilities. Then she's legitimately thrown for a loop when Willhelm reveals himself to be Relo, the warrior who halted her invasion of Crystallis the first time. This gives Willhelm enough time to break her shield, leaving her vulnerable to being defeated by Crisbell's party in subsequence battles.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Twice! The first time you defeat her only leads to her invoking the cataclysm that destroys all of the major cities. The prompts the party into time-traveling into the past and shutting down all the self-destruct terminals first before fighting her again. Defeating her the second time then reveals the true villain of the game: Ardo.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Initially started as Willhelm's rival and friend, and then after studying some ancient ruins she betrayed him. Turns out her turn was caused by her discovering Ardo's plans through her studies.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. Had she not considered her plan to be the only viable one to stop Ardo, she very likely could've gotten Crisbell, her younger self, on her side and wouldn't have needed to become an enemy of the world. By her own admission posthumously, she was too arrogant to realize that Crisbell not agreeing to her plan did not mean she was weak.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The true nature of her plan. In order to stop Ardo from using the Rena Ruins to continuously travel back in time until he could successfully replace the people of the present with the Rena (effectively exterminating all of mankind), she decided to self-destruct the Ruins, despite knowing the massive cataclysm that'd ensue. To her it would be better to lose millions than to lose everyone.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Subverted. Crisbell thinks the Time Empress is her mother, but the Time Empress shoots this down. As it so turns out, she's Crisbell from a Bad Future.
  • Poor Communication Kills: If she had just told Crisbell and others what her motives were, she wouldn't have needed to become an enemy of the world and probably wouldn't have even needed to resort to her incredibly destructive plan. Granted, some of it could've been from paranoia over Ardo potentially influencing everyone behind the scenes, but her decision to be insufferably vague only allowed Crisbell to play right into Ardo's hands.
  • Significant Double Casting: She shares the same voice actress as Crisbell because she's Crisbell from a Bad Future.
  • Smug Super: She's dismissive, callous, and high-and-mighty towards practically everyone because practically no one can match her level of power. By her own posthumous admission, her being so dismissive of everyone else proved to be a terrible mistake, as it blinded her to how dangerous withholding information could be when Ardo was behind the scenes to manipulate people.
  • This Cannot Be!: She legitimately believes it to be impossible when she faces defeat. More justified than most as she had gone through the song and dance multiple times and thought she had a full-proof strategy against Crisbell's party.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: She's significantly easier the last time you fight her, as she still has the same stats while your party has leveled up in the meantime. Justified in that you time-traveled to before the moment you fought her the previous time.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Deciding to cause a planet-wide cataclysm is undoubtedly very extreme, but it's to stop Ardo from going back in time to rewrite the entirety of humanity with his own people.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Her white hair only highlights her villainous nature. It's especially notable in that this darker, eviler version of Crisbell has lost her original brown locks.

     Kari Hudo

Kari Hudo

Voiced by Jenny Yokobori, Suzie Yeung (Child)

  • Barrier Change Boss: In the boss battle with her, Kari Hudo has the weaknesses, resistances, and immunities of the last elemental attack she performs. This means she will shift them around as she performs varying elemental attacks.
  • Big Brother Worship: In this case, sister worship, with an odd twist. Kari is Zas' older sister, who Zas worships. After being de-aged, Kari is younger than Zas, but Zas still views Kari as her older sister.
  • Chain Pain: The chains she uses to capture souls can also be used as a mid-range weapon if she doesn't have a suitable soul to summon and she can't capture anything at the moment. As a party member, her physical attack is notably the only one that can hit multiple enemies.
  • Creepy Good: Young Kari is all for fighting to save the world, but she also doesn't see anything wrong with enslaving the souls of enemies (some of which are fully sentient beings like guards) to do her bidding. Zas can't help but be a bit creeped out.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Young Kari has the same fashion sense as her older self, but unlike her older self, she's firmly on the side of good.
  • The Dragon: She is the Time Empress' most loyal follower, and carries out most of her orders.
  • The Heavy: She's the one who causes the most trouble for the party directly, killing and committing sabotage wherever she goes at the behest of the Time Empress.
  • Heel–Face Turn: An odd case involving Crisbell's powers. Crisbell attempted to turn back time in order to save Elena, whom Kari killed. Crisbell accidentally regresses Kari to a pre-teen state, with the latter's memories of life past that age completely wiped out.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: To get revenge on Azufra, she willingly joined with the Time Empress and went on to cause even more atrocities than he ever did.
  • I Am a Monster: What she proudly calls herself in her obsession to kill Azufra.
  • Power Copying: She uses the powers and abilities of monsters she captures, called "Souls", to use in combat with varying effects.
  • Raise Him Right This Time: She gets de-aged by Crisbell, which causes Kari to lose all her memories of her time as the Time Empress' minion, and with them the reason why she joined her in the first place, becoming an innocent child. This gives Zas and the party an opportunity to help her become a more heroic person.
  • Redemption Demotion: After she's de-aged and joins your party, she can't capture boss creatures, which her older self possessed during her boss battle.
  • Sixth Ranger: Prior to the DLC update, her de-aged self was the last party member to be introduced, and she's appropriately the sixth member and joins preceding the first serious battle against the Time Empress.
  • That Man Is Dead: After De-aged!Kari is eventually told what her older self did. Kari admits to her older self's mistakes but refuses to follow the same path.
  • You Killed My Father: Her obsession with killing Azufra, who she eventually takes her revenge on.

The Volcano Sisters: Volcano and Galley

The Volcano Sisters: Volcano and Galley

Volcano voiced by Meredit Sims
Galley voiced by Tiana Camacho

  • Anti-Villain: They are working for the Time Empress but only in an effort to save Cinder, their kingdom.
  • Dual Boss: They are always encountered as a pair.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Volcano and Galley are both merciless, but Volcano is much more level-headed and keeps her mind on their objectives, while Galley is a slave to her temper and constantly looks for excuses to brutalize others.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After confirming for themselves that the Empress had been manipulating them into turning their people into goblins for her army, they defect from her forces.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: They each carry half of a giant shield that they combine together to seriously buff their defenses. The only way to break it is to rust it by hitting it with water magic and then sending them into the future.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When presented with the possibility of a cure for the Glass Lung afflicting the Cinderians, Volcano tentatively forms an Enemy Mine arrangement with Crisbell's party.
  • Sibling Team: They're a pair of sisters who always fight as a team.
  • Tsundere: Even after their Face–Heel Turn, they struggle to thank Crisbell for her help, often following up their expressions of gratitude with threats.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: They are first seen attacking Narim with their goblin army and setting the town on fire. It's revealed they are being manipulated by the Time Empress, who is preying upon their desperation to save their own town, Cinder.

     Enzo

Enzo

Voiced by Kamran Nikhad

  • Asshole Victim: Deconstructed. He was a tyrant who was behind a robot that killed his own citizens just to keep his corrupt dealings with the red crystal trade under wraps, but everyone is horrified when the Time Empress wipes him from existence, and his death is more meant to demonstrate just how frightening and ruthless she is.
  • The Beastmaster: He uses wolves in combat, and can summon a near endless supply. He really uses mind control on the wolves to have them do his bidding.
    • Flunky Boss: In battle, said Hounds do almost all of the direct attacking. Unlike normal instances of this trope, focusing on Enzo is not the best strategy, since he can sacrifice a Hound to heal back much of his own HP and still summon another Hound. It's better to get rid of his Hounds to deprive him of a means to heal.
  • Corrupt Politician: It's revealed that the red crystal trade hardly impacted the wealth of the lower classes because he's been skimming all the profits for himself. This ultimately gets him killed by the Empress, as he didn't share the profits with her either despite their arrangement.
  • Deader than Dead: Like everyone else the Empress personally deals with, he's not only killed but wiped from existence.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He has arguably the deepest voice of any character in the cast, and he's a dour tyrant.
  • Eyepatch of Power: He sports an ornate eyepatch over his right eye and rules over St. Clarity with an iron fist.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: If he's sent into the past during his boss fight, he'll consistently use his mind control ability to force Crisbell to revert him back to his original state. He'll do this even if he's afflicted with poison or has a Yucandragora planted at his feet, which will inevitably lead him to heavily damaging himself and his wolves.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: He dons a cage-like helmet when he engages the heroes in battle.
  • Mayor Pain: He' ostensibly just the mayor of St. Clarity, but he runs the place more like a dictatorship.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: His command over wolves and use of mind control during his boss fight are never commented on before or afterwards.
  • Not Me This Time: The disposal of St. Clarity's Mother Superior is attributed to him once the Time Empress's full machinations are brought to light. Then it's revealed that he wasn't responsible, despite the number of overall deaths he was behind. In reality, Father Miguel killed her to usurp her position.
  • Unrequited Love: For Sophia, Christopher's mother.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
    • The Empress personally shows up to kill him because he didn't share his monetary profits of selling red crystals with her.
    • In battle itself, Enzo will sacrifice a Hound and heal a lot of his HP back. He calls this attack "Fuel for the Cause." He tends to do this when they're low on HP or when Enzo himself is low on HP.

     Peter

Peter

(Uncredited)

  • The Beastmaster: Like Enzo above, he also uses wolves and mind control in combat.
  • Jerkass: Even before he's revealed to be a spy for the Time Empress, he's hardly a nice guy. He's classist against St. Clarity's lower class, not even bothering to save a child that got swept away into the sewers and heavily implying that he wishes he could just Kill the Poor when they start protesting Enzo's leadership, and every interaction he has with Crisbell and company shows him to be incredibly smug and arrogant.
  • Moveset Clone: His moveset is lifted directly from Enzo, though he's actually weaker as he uses Dark Wolfreds, who have an elemental weakness, while Enzo's wolves have none.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: He sided with the Time Empress against St. Clarity. When he expects to get his reward from the Volcano Sisters, they try to kill him. Somehow, he escapes their trap and strikes off on his own as a mercenary.
  • Smug Snake: He acts above everyone but is easily played as a fool by the Time Empress.

     The Oroitz Twins

Arvo and Irva Oroitz

(Uncredited)

  • Creepy Twins: They have perpetual Dull Eyes of Unhappiness, speak in an almost machine-like tone, and are generally unpleasant individuals.
  • The Dividual: They're Single-Minded Twins who are on the same page about everything, to the extent that they often speak in unison.
  • Matricide: They willingly sacrificed their own mother to resurrect Rhallus, not having much love for her as they viewed her generosity as a sign of weakness.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: They killed they own mother just because they couldn't stand the family fortune being handed out to the rest of the city.
  • Single-Minded Twins: To the extent that they often speak together in complete unison.
  • Thicker Than Water: Averted to hell and back after their crimes are revealed. Their family have no problems having them arrested. Killing the family's beloved matriarch would be most people's limit.
  • The Unfought: They have the capability to perform magic, but despite being behind everything that went wrong in Neva Tulira, they're never fought in a proper boss battle. Instead, they're arrested for their crimes off-screen.

     Rhallus

Rhallus

Voiced by Dawn M. Bennett

  • Back from the Dead: She was resurrected thanks to the efforts of the Oroitz twins, since as the original Oroitz founder, she was long dead when the story began.
  • Butter Face: She's fairly slender from the neck down, but her face is an angular prune adorned with gaudy makeup.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Rhallus derives strength from draining life force out of others, so what better way to use her powers than to take Rysa hostage and use her as a Human Shield in battle? With one maneuver, she can make it harder for Crisbell and the others to fight her, use Rysa as a defense, and eventually kill Rysa. In addition, Rhallus spends all of her time on the right side of the screen, where Crisbell can only send them into the future—and by then, Rysa will instantly succumb to the HP drain.note
  • The Corruptor: Her presence in the Oroitz family ends up making multiple members worse, particularly the children. It's most pronounced with Joseph, who becomes arrogant and self-centered after Rhallus turns him against everyone outside of the family.
  • Dragon Hoard: A rather unique spin on this trope. She's actually a large draconic abomination, and she's obsessively protective over her family's fortune, much like how an actual dragon greedily guards its hoard of treasure.
  • Evil Matriarch: She is revealed to be the original founder and matriarch of the Oroitz family. She doesn't like her family fortune being handed out.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Her eyes are always shut in her character portraits. That is until her true nature is revealed, where she reveals that she has Glowing Eyes of Doom.
  • One-Winged Angel: Her humanoid appearance is just a ruse. Rhallus' true form is a massive draconic monster that's more powerful in every way and is capable of draining more health from Rysa. Unlike most examples of this trope, seeing this form is entirely self-inflicted because it will only happen if Crisbell sends her to the future.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: At full power, she's revealed to be a large draconic monster with feathered wings, though she's strangely the matriarch of a family of Bird People that possess no overtly reptilian characteristics.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: She actively instills a classist mindset into the children of the Oroitz family and is livid at the prospect of handing out their wealth to those she considers "lesser".
  • Villainous Cheekbones: Her face is sunken in enough to reveal a very sharp set of cheekbones. She's also a greedy and classist woman who is making Neva Tulira worse.

     Father Miguel

Father Miguel

(Uncredited)

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He's introduced as an individual who seems pious and kindly enough, with anything off about him easily chalked up to Enzo's oversight over the entire town. When you return to St. Clarity, it's revealed that he's actually a power-hungry maniac.
  • Eyes Always Shut: None of his character portraits regardless of his mood depict him with open eyes, which turns out to be an early clue to his deceitful nature.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Father Miguel taunts Crisbell and her friends after they defeat his monster. He claims that they can't kill him or that'll make them murderers and if they leave him to his own devices he'll just find a way to get revenge. Thankfully, Adri just invented a recorder that records Father Miguel's monologue.
  • Sinister Minister: He is a priest of the Lady but serves the Time Empress. Even worse, he killed Maya, the Mother Superior of St. Clarity.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He speaks very calmly and leads his would-be victims to his pet monster.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Or rather, his second Sewer Depthstalker forgot to. Its elemental weakness is the same as the first, and unlike the battle with the first one, you actually have a party member with the matching elemental attack this time around.

     Ardo (SPOILERS)

Ardo

Voiced by Sean Chiplock

  • Evil Sounds Deep: While not as deep as Enzo's, Ardo's baritone still carries with it the weathered authority of someone who has been in battle for eons.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: All of the Time Empress's actions were to combat him, making him this even if he wasn't actively trying to corrupt her.
  • Hidden Villain: He was the true villain of the game and was Matias all along.
  • Last of His Kind: The last of the Rena. Until the end of the game, in which he and Crisbell time-jump his people into the far future. A time jump from before is the reason Ardo exists as the last Rena in the first place.
  • The Lost Lenore: In the past, Ardo lost his wife, Lilith. Ostensibly, her death was due to the humans betraying the Rena, which only added to his want for revenge.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Spends the entire game disguised as a magical frog and pretending to be Crisbell's friend and guide all the while using her to eliminate the Time Empress and retake the world for the Rena.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: His hair is deathly pale and he has genocidal intentions for humanity.

Other NPCs

     Secretary Lana (SPOILERS)

Secretary Lana / Lava

Voiced by Lindsey Vega

  • Heel–Face Turn: After learning what the Time Empress did to Cinder, she is in shock. After Crisbell and company save Lana from the Great Forge's official automaton, she hands the party the access key to the Cinder Ruins.
  • Jerkass: She led the attack on Narim, turned its citizens against Crisbell, and remains unrepentant about it even after learning about the Time Empress' treachery.
  • The Mole: She is a spy for Cinder (and the Time Empress) and her real name is Lava.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: It turns out she's the third princess of Cinder's royal family, and she had been working to deactivate the Great Forge in order to stop the plague of Glass Lung.
  • Was Once a Man: Inverted. She used to be a goblin just like the rest of the people of Cinder, but the magics used to heal her turned her into a human.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After her defeat, she is not seen again, and is not given an epilogue either.

    Buki

Buki

Voiced by Laila Berzins

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Not normally, but when she is about to reveal the truth about Rhallus, Kari Hudo appears and uses a device that drives her mad, forcing Crisbell's party to fight her. Thankfully, she reboots none the worse for wear afterwards.
  • Apologetic Attacker: After she awakens to her memories and is tasked by Ardo with guarding one of the Rena Ruin consoles, she begs Crisbell not to come any closer, as she does not wish to shed blood and was already traumatized from having slaughtered the humans who killed the Rena children she was caring for.
  • Electronic Speech Impediment: When first met, she speaks with a high amount of Repetitive Audio Glitch stuttering due to having been tampered with. Once restored to her proper state, she speaks more normally.
  • Identity Amnesia: She is introduced as this, with her body parts separated. At first, it seems as though Rhallus was the one responsible, as she was the one who broke Buki into piece, but it's later revealed that Kari Hudo tampered with her long-term memory.
  • Magical Nanny: Her true purpose was to be a nanny for Rena babies.
  • Mama Bear: She slaughtered the humans who killed the Rena children under her care.
  • Magitek: As one of the Witnesses, she falls into this category. Her appearance is a giant floating mask and limbs.

    Nasar

Nasar

Voiced by Lindsay Sheppard

  • Contralto of Strength: She speaks with a very rough voice, befitting her role as a master blacksmith.
  • The Fog of Ages: Due to her long life as a Witness, she suffers from this. Like the other Witnesses, her memories return to her once Ardo initiates his plan.
  • Single-Task Robot: In her own words, to create and improve. That said, her inventions include a time sword and a Bag of Holding. She might have a "single" purpose, but it is a very broad purpose.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: She is the one who created Cris' time sword and Zas' bag. Depending on who is in the party, she comments she built other weapons, such as K's gauntlets.

    Azufra

Azufra

Voiced by Michael Kovach

  • The Faceless: Always seen wearing a mask that makes him look quite imposing. That said, you can see what he looked like without it in the past.
  • Just the First Citizen: He is by all rights the ruler of Cinder, but the official rank he goes by is First Citizen.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Though he's featured in only one chapter of the game, his actions in the past were what drove Volcano, Galley, Zas, and Kari Hudo to become the people they are presently. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, that meant villainy for all of them except Zas.
  • Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters: In the past, he led a revolution against the Cinder royal family, killing the then King and Queen, the Volcano Sisters' parents. There is no love lost between them.
