Makoto Naegi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_0466ed8f0900d83610d28b37a6fb56d4_fc1ae29c_1280_7.png

An average high schooler who would one day become the Ultimate Hope.

  • A Day in the Limelight: He ends up going through his "Worst Day Ever" Adventure during the Connections Arc.
  • Born Lucky: He earns the title of Ultimate Lucky Student after winning Hope's Peak annual lottery.
  • Harem Seeker: Subverted. When Iroha brings up the topic and assures him that she's accepting to the idea of them being in a polyamorous relationship with Sayaka, Makoto counters by saying that it would feel too strange having to manage multiple relationships mixed with having the personal lives of their partners blend together. While he isn't against the idea, considering he does get multiple partners in the future, he is perfectly content being in a monogamous relationship with Iroha for the time being. They later extend it to Sayaka as of the charity event.
  • Kid from the Future: In 2030, he and Iroha have a son named Noriaki and Word of God has confirmed he has a daughter named Akemi with Sayaka.
  • Nice Guy: Very much so.
  • Official Couple: He becomes Iroha's boyfriend in Season 2.

Toko Fukawa

An anxious misanthrope who would one day become the Ultimate Author.

  • Action Girl: Her Athena personality proves to be quite the daredevil as she becomes instrumental in taking down a self-working gatling gun that was targeting the hospital.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Upon meeting Kasugano, she instantly believes that he's going to have "his way" with her. Hajime flat out tells her that he's not here for that.
  • The Cynic: Having been abused and betrayed by everyone in her life, Toko has a tendency to distrust others and assume the worst.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She grew up under an abusive family and was constantly humiliated by her school crushes. This would result in the genesis of Genocider Syo.
  • Put on a Bus: After talking things out with Kasugano along with Drs. Kabuya and Mitsume, Toko agrees to enter a medical facility so she can manage her Dissociative Identity Disorder. She returns when the Quantum Crew visits said facility in the Old Ghosts Arc.
  • Split Personality: As Kokoro points out, someone with her condition having a single, murderous alter is astronomically rare. She also surmises that Toko actually has more than one, and that sending her away to get treated can help her.
    • In the Old Ghosts Arc, she's revealed to have developed new, but harmless, alters during her stay at the hospital. Such as the friendly and cheerful Hanako, Athena who's a blunt self-helper, and Shujenko who's based on one of her novels and has a blunt nature.

Genocider Syo

Toko's alter who would one day become the Ultimate Serial Killer. She is the main antagonist of the Hide and Seek Arc.

Leon Kuwata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_ca1cf71ae6504767a83d90720bfa2b7b_63a6dbc2_500.png

A hotheaded flirt who would one day become the Ultimate Baseball Star.

  • Big Brother Instinct: He might dislike Kanon's crush on him, but when Maverick Storm threatens to kill her if Kasugano doesn't reveal and then kill himself, he wastes no time threatening to do it himself.
  • Broken Tears: He breaks down during his demands that Kasugano give in to Maverick Storm's demands over his fear for Kanon.
  • Jerk Jock: He's arrogant with a self-absorbed nature and was able to beat Hajime in a basketball game with an impressive score.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's very hotheaded, rash, and can be rather rude, but it's clear that Leon is a friendly guy overall.

Byakuya Togami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_065cc7c32061ab72258d7dd9953c6984_edd0aabd_500.png

  • Blue Blood: He comes from the influential Togami bloodline and is destined to revolutionize the world market with his talents.
  • Bystander Syndrome: He makes no effort to hunt for Kasugano, but doesn't support him either. As he puts it, he wants to see how things play out.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He rightfully points out to Leon that, as much as he wants to help save Kanon, he won't be able to do much to help the group.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's mostly a jerk, but he thinks very highly of his hired help and will give credit to people when he thinks they've earned it.
  • The Leader: To everyone's surprise, he's revealed to be the designated leader of the massive rescue operation during the Puppetmaster Arc.
  • Not Bad: While he still doesn't think that highly of him, he admits to being very impressed Kasugano was able to uncover and defeat Genocider Syo.
  • Riches to Rags: According to Itsuki, the Togami name will no longer be the shining conglomerate it was by the year 2030. A lot of his finances were divided and moved to small subsidiaries and the Togamis, Byakuya included, will have lost their influence on the world.
  • Smug Snake: Akane certainly thinks he is.

Chihiro Fujisaki

A stoic and reserved girl who would one day become the Ultimate Detective.

  • Ambiguous Situation: In the Clouds Pass Arc, she gives Tsurugi and Kohei a USB that contains vital information regarding the past events involving Kasugano along with the names of important figures. There's no clues as to how she obtained this information or what her endgame is.
  • Crush Blush: When she meets her future wife Iroha for the first time.
  • In the Hood: When she turns up at Maverick's island resort to help save everyone, she's wearing a hooded raincoat with the hood pulled up.
  • Mentor Archetype: In 2030, she's taken Asami under her wing as a detective. The latter even calls her "sensei" while talking with her.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: It's heavily implied she knows who Kasugano is, but she hasn't said anything to anyone. The Die Free and Live Hard arc confirms it.

Mondo Oowada

  • Breaking Old Trends: The first time traveler to have actually died in the future.
  • Idol Singer: Sayaka made a living for herself by forming an idol group with her friends.
  • Spoiled Sweet: A wealthy idol performer with a kind heart.

A cheerful Child Prodigy and the Mage in the Warriors of Hope.

  • Happily Adopted: She ends up in Kyoji's care after her growth stunt. She's definitely a lot happier compared to where she lived before.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She gets this reaction when her body starts to react in pain after her Plot-Relevant Age-Up stunt. She continues to feel this way after Kyoji and Kasugano chew her out for the trouble she's caused.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Despite not being an official antagonist along with the protagonists trying to help her, Monaca's robots serve as a deadly obstacle that the Quantum Crew have to overcome in order to reach her during the Hide and Seek Arc.
  • Obfuscating Disability: As revealed in the climax of the Storm Arc, Kyoji convinced Monaca to pretend that she was clinically sick so she can stay inside a medical chamber to recover. This was done in order to keep her safe from her abusive brother who was planning on selling her to human traffickers.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: In the Hide and Seek Arc, she gives herself a growth serum that makes her body age into becoming a teenager. It's horribly deconstructed by Kyoji who explains all the negative repercussions that her body is undergoing due to the forced aging which also gives the girl serious body pains.
  • Precocious Crush: She crushes on Kasugano for how cool he is and how he plans to "punish" the horrible adults. Due to their age difference, Monaca decided to make herself grow up so she can be with him.
  • Robot Master: Just like in canon, she can create deadly robots to protect and serve her.

Kotoko Utsugi/Tsumiki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_cfc56cdd0d9b6eb02207c2aa3126b4d9_3ad9a168_1280.png

A Former Child Star and the Fighter in the Warriors of Hope.

  • Commonality Connection: Mikan bonds with her during her checkups, especially after learning what a horrible ordeal Kotoko's been through. After she runs away from her family, Mikan fully embraces her and considers her a little sister.
  • Cruel Mercy: She decides her father is Not Worth Killing and instead decides to leave him to rot in jail with the knowledge that he has no one to blame but himself. He absolutely deserves it.
  • Happily Adopted: After her parents are finally arrested, Setsuka and Kakeru start work to help Mikan officially adopt Kotoko. They receive their approval at the end of The Clouds Pass.
  • Rape as Backstory: It's a given, unfortunately...
  • The Runaway: Becomes this at the end of The Concert arc, taking the keycard from the hotel room she and her father were staying in and running all the way back to Hope's Peak, where Mikan offers her refuge.
  • Shed the Family Name: Once her father is caught at the end of the Storm arc, she tells him that under no certain terms, her name is no longer Utsugi.
  • She's All Grown Up: In one of Mikako's visions, we get a view of where she'll be approximately a decade from now; a beautiful, healthy young adult with a bunch of younger siblings of her own.

Masaru Daimon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_aa6f99d94dfc6abcd397013effcbdf30_6e135e19_1280.png

A hyperactive child athlete and the Hero in the Warriors of Hope.

  • Happily Adopted: Thanks to the Quantum Crew for exposing his abusive monster father, Emma is making plans to have Masaru adopted into her own family.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: On the receiving end from his father. He was so badly injured that he ended up in the hospital.

Jataro Kemuri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_a3a0d1ecaabe1fdda4a8279e953a4825_f2f9150d_640.png
Click here to see his true self

A timid artist and the Priest in the Warriors of Hope.

  • Beautiful All Along: As in canon, Jataro believes his face is hideously deformed, but after Iroha removes it, it's clear he's quite a handsome boy.
  • Birds of a Feather: He gets along greatly with Iroha thanks to being a fellow airheaded artist with a troubled home life.
  • Child by Rape: As Iroha and Setsuka learn in Black And White Christmas, Ui was raped by her art instructor and Jataro was conceived as a result. Her family ignored her trauma and forced her to care for him, even though she knew she wouldn't be a good mother. The reason why she made him wear the mask was because he looks just like his biological father.
  • Happily Adopted: Despite her age, Iroha is working to become his legal guardian. For now, he's under the care of Setsuka and Umeko.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Jataro is a sweet, loving, kindhearted boy whose biological father is a manipulative rapist.
  • Parental Neglect: He was greatly neglected and emotionally abused by his mother, Ui, before Iroha encouraged him to leave with her.
  • The Runaway: After the news about Hope's Peak Elementary is spilled to the public, Iroha spirits Jataro away to the Voids' home, where she becomes a surrogate sister to him.

Nagisa Shingetsu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_31da7f41a117678d2378e711919216d8_3d656821_1280.png

A mature honors student and the Sage in the Warriors of Hope.

  • Child Prodigy: Along with being well versed in his academics, Nagisa is pretty knowledgable when it comes to advanced technology. He even takes the time to help out his science mom with her own projects.
  • Happily Adopted: He ends up in the care of Official Couple Setsuka and Umeko and couldn't be happier.

Komaru Naegi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_48d07dfd2fcd8a5882e3d3ab33d8b078_f28ec9f5_1280.png

Makoto Naegi's average little sister who would one day rise to fight the Forces of Despair.

  • Big Little Sister: She's taller than her brother and teases him about it when given the opportunity.
  • Birds of a Feather: She gets along greatly with Iroha thanks to their shared love of manga.
  • Shipper on Deck: She highly approves of Iroha getting together with her brother.

Kanon Nakajima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_a7a5e98c2b183409c22a7ca80f846b8a_379ff62c_540.png

Leon's amorous cousin who would later get swept up in a certain mess in Towa City.

  • Big Brother Attraction: While she and Leon are cousins, they see each other as siblings, although Kanon wants to be much closer.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She's Italian on her mother's side.
  • Driven to Suicide: Out of shame over helping Storm, as well as knowing that Leon hates her attraction to him, she tries to kill herself with a knife. Thankfully, Mikako talks her down.
  • Hostage Situation: As of The Puppetmaster Arc, she and her friends end up in this.
  • Odd Friendship: Her time on Sunny Days Vacation Island has helped bring her, Yuki, Damian, and Kana together as close friends.
  • Only Sane Woman: Somehow she seems to have moved into this role in The Puppetmaster Arc.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She's been in love with Leon ever since she was six and has confessed to him 3,889 times as of the Equinox Arc. Everyone can see how unhealthy her obsession is. Even she seems to be coming to terms with it.

Parents of the Warriors of Hope

Hiroshi Daimon

Masaru's father. A brutish drunkard who's guilty of inflicting physical abuse onto his son.

  • The Alcoholic: Is always shown in a drunk state.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After beating his defenseless son to the point of hospitalization, the monster gets a taste of his own medicine when Tsurugi arrests him and uses police brutality on him.
  • Never My Fault: He blamed his late wife for not being able to find a stable job. Additionally, he refuses to take responsibility for beating his son to the point of hospitalization.
  • Only in It for the Money: He admits that he agreed to marry his wife because of her economics degree and how her father was a stockbroker, both of which would "supposedly" guarantee him a job.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Apparently has no shame in physically beating his 10 year old child for no reason, claiming it to be discipline.

Ui Kemuri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_b0f021ebe12a5ff57442d7598aa8a6b5_152ed986_500.png

Jataro's mother. A tragic woman who's guilty of inflicting negligence and verbal abuse onto her son.

  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Out of all the parents of the Warriors of Hope, Ui is easily the least malicious. While she was still neglectful and emotionally abusive, she still at least put in the effort to try and raise her son, working two jobs and making sure he went to school. And given how much trauma she'd experienced with no help or sympathy from anyone she knew, it's certainly hard to blame her for being upset. She even tried to give Jataro away to someone who would be able to take care of him, knowing she wasn't cut out for raising him. She admits to Iroha that had she marched up to her door and asked for Jataro, she would have happily given him to her, since she could tell that Iroha openly cared for him.
  • Adaptational Sympathy: In the original game, Jataro's mother regretted giving birth to him and hated him simply for denying her the chance to do everything she wanted. Here, Ui genuinely tried to take care of him, and her neglect stems from being forced to take care of the child of the man who raped her, who also looks just like him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: One of the most tragic backstories to date. She was a rising art student who was romantically involved with an art instructor. But everything changed when the instructor raped and abandoned her with his child. Her family, the police and the world around her showed no sympathy for the tragedy and even accused her of allowing it. To make matters worse, they forced her to keep Jataro to take responsibility in raising him. So she's had to change her entire life to taking care of a child she didn't want who bore a strong resemblance to her rapist. And then came the abuse...
  • Exhausted Eyebags: If you knew of her backstory, you'd understand why she had them.
  • Foil: To Iroha, in a dark way. The two of them loved art, have someone they looked up to and both become young mothers. However, while Iroha has a large support network and at least has forewarning about having a child at 19, Ui had none of that. Not only was she raped by her mentor, but she was forced by everyone she knew to care for her rapist's son with no regard for how the incident affected her personally. To make matters worse, Jataro looks just like his father, and looking at his face triggered Ui severely.
  • It's All My Fault: Unlike the other adults, she actually owns up to her abuse towards Jataro and feels genuine remorse for her actions.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: She loved the arts and her son inherited her passion and art making skills.
  • Mandatory Motherhood: Her family forced her to not only give birth to Jataro, but raise him alone, even when she knew she wouldn't be cut out for it.
  • Parental Neglect: She's guilty of neglecting Jataro and leaving him in the house for long hours of the day. It's revealed that she's had to work two jobs to support him and she can't stand to see him because of his face. Ui also admits that she isn't cut out to be a good mother.
  • Teen Pregnancy: She had Jataro when she was only 18. Not by choice, unfortunately.
  • Trauma Button: Why did she make Jataro wear that mask? He looks just like her rapist.
  • Troubled Abuser: Unfortunately, the trauma Ui suffered led to her abusing her own son, although she deeply regrets it.
  • Younger Than They Look: Only 27, but you'd be forgiven for thinking she's older.

Yumi Utsugi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_0410e595a33389738061919f67e675f9_48402cd8_500.png

Kotoko's mother. A cynical lady who's guilty of inflicting emotional abuse and exploitation onto her daughter.

  • Commonality Connection: She ends up striking a nerve with Mikan by asking if she ever had to endure her own hell just to have a chance of being worth something special just like her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She may be a cynical Stage Mom with twisted values of womanhood, but even she was disgusted with her husband trying to sell their daughter into a human trafficking ring.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Yumi doesn't regret being tough on her daughter as it ensured that she'd be recognized as a star student at the infamous Hope's Peak Elementary division.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Her own goal is to make a name for herself and obtain all the success she can muster. It's why she insisted on putting her daughter into the path of stardom.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • She gets this reaction after learning that Kotoko has HIV and that her husband lied to her about the tests.
    • She has this reaction yet again when both the Anons and Mikan point out that if Kotoko has HIV, then there is a good chance she has it as well.
  • Proud Beauty: She's attractive by DR standards and openly claims that youth and beauty are the two most important things in a woman's life.
  • Stage Mom: Her motivation of pushing Kotoko into being a bigtime actress was to ensure that she'd be recognized by all of Japan.
  • Worth It: Proudly admits that putting Kotoko through her abuse and high expectations just to make an influential name for herself is worth it.

Mai Shingetsu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_8fd329e4cda3c3ad0c71d3209468f333_61b6c54f_1280.png

Nagisa's mother. A stone hearted, science aficionado who's guilty of inflicting mental abuse and experimentation onto her son. She also works for the Hope's Peak Steering Committee and is complicit in the Kamukura Project.

  • Expy: She looks and behaves like the loathsome Abacus Cinch from the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Friendship Games movie.
  • Foil: To Kokoro Mitsume. While both had their child for the sole purpose of experimenting on them and are both well aware of their actions, Kokoro ended up feeling remorse for this and genuinely grew to care about Mikako's wellbeing and happiness, even sacrificing herself in one timeline to save her life. Mai, on the other hand, is utterly unrepentant of abusing Nagisa and even after having him taken out of her custody, had the audacity to immediately get herself knocked up again just to have another test subject.
  • For Science!: She wanted to study the true capabilities of a human being, so she decided to use her son to undergo multiple horrific experiments that pushed his body and sanity to the very limit.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Wears glasses and is an utterly cruel-hearted excuse for a parent.
  • I Have No Son!: She proudly boasts that Nagisa is no longer her responsibility.
  • Karma Houdini: By the power of the Hope's Peak Steering Committee manipulating the government, she's allowed to walk out of jail without a trial, with the cops utterly powerless to stop her.
  • Parental Neglect: She has no love in her black heart to give to her son. Heck, she even admits that she has no interest in taking him back and writes him off as a failed experiment.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: She refers to Kyoji, a biracial man of Korean decent, as a "half-breed".

    Patient 8702 (SPOILERS)

Ryoko Otonashi

Sprite created by danganspritesbox

The mysterious patient of DLTA whose identity would one day be stolen by her own sister.

  • Ambiguous Situation: How did Ryoko's accident happen? Did she slip and fall during a jump from a rock? Did Junko push her? Did she deliberately aim for the rocks? Was it some combination of the above? In the end, nobody knows for sure.
  • Awesome by Analysis: She still retains the ability to analyze a situation and come up with an effective strategy. This is best used when Dr. Shirogane triggers several bombs to blow up the hospital leaving it up to the forgetful girl to describe the hospital's layout to the Quantum Crew so they can stop the detonation from happening.
  • Decomposite Character: In Danganronpa Zero, she represented an amnesiac version of Junko Enoshima who wasn't consumed by despair or cruelty. In here, she's her own person whose main connection to the walking apocalypse is being her older sister.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: She only has one scar which is on her head. Ryoko tells the Crew that she got it when she was diving near a rocky beach with her sisters which resulted in a head injury that gave her her amnesia disorder.
  • Forgetful Jones: She has Anterograde Amnesia, meaning that her brain can't retain new memories and she forgets everything and everyone she meets. By the end of Old Ghosts, she choses to forget the events of the arc ever happened.
  • Living MacGuffin: The Quantum Crew is warned by their future descendants that Ryoko needs to be protected from Junko.
  • Note to Self: She always carries her notebook(s) so she can remember conversations and people in the present.
