Tsurugi Kinjo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_d840927cb4f67814da655675cea71aa4_be8ca1fa_1280.png

A professional cop who would one day become the Ultimate Police Officer.

  • Enemy Mine: He's forced to work with Kasugano when they both enter a burning building in the hopes of rescuing as many civilians as possible.
  • Inspector Javert: He's becoming this as he disapproves of Kasugano's vigilante approach to defeating criminals.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He may be an unwavering stickler for order, but he does make some valid points to Akane about how Kasugano's mode of operandi is quite unjust and how he's avoiding authority figures to follow his own ethics.
  • Kid from the Future: In 2030, he and Kouhei have a daughter named Asami.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: A respectable officer who intends to do things by the book.
  • Police Brutality: His father gives him carte blanche to deal with Hiroshi Daimon, and when he refuses to sign a confession, Tsurugi proceeds to beat the shit out of him, breaking his finger and knocking out a tooth. Not that anyone is particularly upset.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Kouhei's Blue.
  • Trauma Conga Line: The conclusion of the Die Free or Live Hard Arc results in Tsurugi discovering that his father is a depraved monster who purposefully instigated a variety of terrorist events in the name of pushing his son to embrace his twisted ideologies of justice, and the latest one would have resulted in the death of his best friend. Tsurugi is even forced to shoot his father in the hand to stop him from attacking his colleagues. Oh, and Megumi executes the monster in his office, declaring that he's too dangerous to be kept alive. So yeah....not the best night for him.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Hajime and Sora are worried that he'll turn into this as his original self became a merciless authority figure after the loss of his best friend and the exposed corruption of his father.

Kouhei Sasaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_319cae7996cfb64a2bd70e1d93c02b35_2f69e6a6_1280.png

A police officer and Tsurugi's best friend.

  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed. In the original series, he was only referenced during Tsurugi's Free Time Events and was killed before the start of the killing game. In this story, he makes a living appearance and has more character depth. However, he's mainly involved whenever the story focuses on Tsurugi.
  • Kid from the Future: In 2030, he and Tsurugi have a daughter named Asami.
  • Morality Chain: According to the Crew, he's the only person who's close enough to Tsurugi who can keep his darker tendencies in check. In the original timeline, his death would contribute to Tsurugi becoming a heartless enforcer of the law.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: He lives up to this image more than Tsurugi.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Tsurugi's Red.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: As of the Die Free or Live Hard Arc.

Midori Yamaguchi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_9ccf5c82fb0ca0baa5e1719ecfffd83a_6772f0a1_500.png

A sickly girl who is the younger sister of the accomplished lawyer, Kakeru Yamaguchi.

  • Cool Big Sis: She becomes a big sister to the Warriors of Hope and babysits them when given the opportunity. Downplayed in that she's only 12, while the rest of them are either 10 or 11.
  • Delicate and Sickly: She spends a lot of her time in hospitals due to her physical health. But it's because of this that she has a chance encounter with Masaru Daimon.
  • Killer Game Master: Playfully parodied. Midori's game sessions with the Warriors of Hope involve her taking the role of a villainous game master for the group to defeat.
  • Odd Friendship: Forms one with Nagito of all people.
  • Sixth Ranger: She joins the Warriors of Hope as the Thief.

Yamato Kisaragi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_cdf86926735284c61ab4200b11da60d4_03436992_1280.png

A brilliant and friendly boy who would one day become the Ultimate Inventor. He is also Mikako's adopted brother.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Yamato cares deeply for Mikako and does everything in his power to support her.
  • Closet Geek: He's an anime nerd and has a figurine of Nishikono Maki.
  • Ridiculously Successful Future Self: He takes over the Kisaragi Foundation and makes multiple accomplishments in technology that benefits society.
  • Teen Genius: He's knowledgeable when it comes to inventing gadgets and artificial intelligences.

Mikako Kurokawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_329385f0b1bc101f27ed90ab97913b0d_c0fc692c_500.png

A spirited girl who would one day become the Ultimate Exorcist. She is also the estranged daughter of Kokoro Mitsume.

  • Egocentrically Religious: Averted. She has a rather sane view of God and while she does pray, she understands that He loves everyone, even saying as much when she reveals that she saw a vision of herself dancing with a woman.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: While she does forgive her mother for the brain implant and allows her back into her life, she still brings up the incident when agitated.
  • Gayngst: In The Clouds Pass, she admits she had vision seeing herself with another woman- heavily implied to be her future classmate Rei Mekaru- and admits she's unsure what it means for her. Downplayed in that she doesn't have a problem with homosexuality- the vision made her really happy, in fact- it's just that it's left her quite confused about her orientation now.
  • Happily Adopted: She was raised by the Kisaragi family and couldn't be happier with them.
  • Happily Married: To Rei in 2030.
  • Japanese Christian: Along with wearing a cross for a necklace, Mikako is shown to recite Catholic verses and prayers from time to time.
  • Kid from the Future: In 2030, she and Rei have a son named Seishiro and a daughter named Chiyumi.
  • Power at a Price: While Mikako unlocks the ability to see into the future and is eager to use it to help others, her future seeing experiences take a serious toll on her physical being. The Crew worries that carelessly using her power could result in Mikako developing seizures.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She's a deadringer for Snow White.
  • Seers: In Season 2, she discovers that she has the ability to see into the future. To the horror of the Quantum Crew, one of her visions involve the Reserve Course Mass Suicide and Monokuma himself.
  • Token Religious Teammate: The most openly spiritual among the cast.

Ayame Hatano

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_9b8dde2886a0d450a5da0d5d821fafc2_2976bef4_640.png

A strong-willed athlete who would one day become the Ultimate Sprinter.

  • Harem Seeker: Inverted. When Akane confesses that she's also interested in forming a polyamorous relationship with her and Nikei, Ayame is supportive of her decision and is willing to go along with her potential harem. She even calls Akane a "harem protagonist" when she brings it up.
  • Kid from the Future: In 2030, she and Akane have a son named Satoshi, and the two of them are also parental figures to Etsuya, Mizuki, and Hitomi.
  • No Social Skills: She admits that she isn't a social butterfly and can go off topic in conversations.
  • Official Couple: With Akane Taira as of the Puppetmaster Arc.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: A professional athlete who excels at running.

Yuki Maeda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_641a54c3cc158427256c395459749884_c2357ab7_1280.png

An average high schooler who would one day become Class 79's Ultimate Lucky Student.

  • Cosmic Plaything: Sora considers him to be this based on everything he went through in the original timeline.
  • Dude in Distress: He becomes brainwashed after watching Maverick's Sunny Days video and leaves his home to join the island cult.
  • Identical Stranger: He bears a strong resemblance to Utsuro. This is the reason as to why he was captured by the External Agents of Despair and Mikado Sannoji.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: His reason for running away to Maverick's island cult was because he wanted to be someone special in life but feared that he was burdening his mother with his unremarkable identity.
  • Kid from the Future: In 2030, he has a daughter named Hitomi with Kizuna and Akane is pregnant with his second child.
  • Odd Friendship: His time on Sunny Days Vacation Island has helped bring him, Kanon, Damian, and Kana together as close friends.
  • Official Couple: He ends up becoming Kizuna's boyfriend and cherishes her.

Kizuna Tomori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_870859dd6dfac268ad43115cad4ec296_2d824edf_640.png

A popular, stuck-up girl who would one day become the Ultimate Cheerleader.

  • Adaptational Nice Girl: While she's still full of herself and tries to get people to buy her things, her nastier traits have been dialed back here.
  • Alpha Bitch: She's the most popular girl in her school, captain of her cheerleading squad, has her own personal bodyguards, and has an ego to match. Deconstructed when it's made clear she's had to put up a facade to hide any signs of weakness from the guys in her life—something that's left her without any close friends she can open up to.
    • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Her time in Maverick's island cult actually mellows her out. She opens up around Yuki and his friends, offers him genuine emotional support during times of crisis, and makes it how much she cares about him and wants to date him.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She shows up in one of Mikako's visions before appearing in the story proper.
  • Gold Digger: She often uses her popularity to get people to buy gifts for her.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Becomes this after arriving on Sunny Days island, proceeding to drink and get high as soon as she can, much to the annoyance of Kanon.
  • Kid from the Future: In 2030, she and Yuki have a daughter named Hitomi.
  • Love Letter: She gets so many of these that they clog up her mailbox if she doesn't answer them. Unfortunately, hidden among them is a brochure to Sunny Days island.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: She's very physically affectionate.
  • Official Couple: She ends up in a romantic relationship with Yuki and she appreciates him. Akane's trip to the future in the Before and After Arc reveals that they even have kids.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She falls for Yuki due to his kind heart and how he doesn't want to exploit her like all her previous boy toys.

    Introduced in SDRA2

Syobai Hashimoto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_8a7e64db3dea7b38cd37a4e58b81100c_b45f1e57_500.png

Class 71's Former Ultimate Broker who now works in the black market.

  • Adaptational Heroism: Downplayed. The Quantum Crew manage to hire him for his services which makes him an official member of their team. It should be noted that he's only helping them thanks to their extensive payment plan and because he hasn't been contracted by anyone malicious.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He makes a living trafficking illegal goods, but he refuses to be involved with underaged clients. It takes the Crew having to reveal their true identity along with their proposed payment plan in order to change his mind. He also makes it clear on his website he refuses to partake in human trafficking.
  • Friend in the Black Market: He lives up to this role as the QC hires him to use his connections to research people or locations of interest.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He's shown to dress quite professionally compared to how he looked in SDRA2.

    Original Characters

Roger Wilcox

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_311dbf57ae09d6209fcd4a902e0b50f1_291a8a70_640.png

Emma's talent agent and the closest person to her outside of her family.

  • Large and in Charge: He's in charge of getting Emma roles in films and Word of God confirms he's 215 cm or 7 feet tall.
  • Papa Wolf: He was the first real father figure Emma ever had and certainly acts like it. He helped get her out of the ghetto, kept her safe from sleazy Hollywood types while she was growing up and even got in touch with an adoption agency to find her a new family.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure
  • Secret-Keeper: He knows about many of the problems Emma's kept hidden from the public and has made sure nobody else finds out, though he also encourages her to seek help.
  • Smooth-Talking Talent Agent: Thankfully averted. Roger cares far more about Emma's health and happiness than he does making money off her.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Emma considers pretzels to be his kryptonite.

Hitaru Nijiue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_30213927f0ddeba60940513ea920e918_d00143bd_1280.png

The eldest of the Nijiue siblings and an overall kind, caring person

  • Cool Big Sis: She took on a very motherly role for her siblings, caring for them when they were sick and keeping watch over them when they played games.
  • Covered in Scars: She wears large gloves to cover up the scars left by her parents' preferred act of disciplining her: tying her to a table with piano wire whenever she disobeyed them.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Akemi's death in the future left her completely uncaring of anything, to the point where she didn't care if the Basilisk killed her.
  • Extreme Doormat: While she means well, Hitaru unfortunately has little drive to oppose her parents. Not that she doesn't want to, but she feels like it's impossible and doesn't want others to be hurt because of it. Both Emma and Akemi try to convince her otherwise.
  • Nice Girl: The Voids are surprised to learn that she's actually a very sweet girl upon first meeting her.

Jiro Nijiue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_22780f887a591d25d29639d7608f585e_fa767e33_1280.png

The second-eldest Nijiue sibling and the only boy.

  • Bizarre Taste in Food: He enjoys meat with mint jelly.
  • Extreme Doormat: Like Hitaru, he's aware of how awful his parents are but apparently has no will to oppose them. He also gets ordered around by Akemi.
  • It's All My Fault: He feels like a lot of the abuse Iroha endured was his fault, since he was too scared to confront their parents over it.
  • Men Are Tough: The abuse he endures from his father is based on not living up to his standards of toxic masculinity. Jiro is heavily criticized for not being a true man and for being too emotional and passive.
  • Rugged Scar: He's revealed to gain several in the future.
  • The One Guy: The only brother among the Nijiue kids.

Akemi Nijiue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_e94cdf51fa3bbb67795a8c84c6584fa9_186ca819_1280.png

The second-youngest Nijiue sibling and a fairly smug, arrogant girl.

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: She's rather full of herself when it comes to her skills in card games, even when Iroha makes it clear Akemi's never managed to beat her.
  • Batman Gambit: She gets Iroha to agree to the Yu-Gi-Oh! match by threatening to return her to her parents. She would never actually do it, but she also knew that Iroha feared going back to their parents far too much to take the risk.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Akemi doesn't believe respect is something you deserve, but something you earn. To her, Iroha earned it by running away from home and building a life for herself, while Hitaru and Jiro are happy with just keeping their heads down around their parents.
  • Large Ham: She's a very dramatic player.
  • Mundane Luxury: When an Anon offers her an Egg McMuffin, Akemi offers to give them everything she owns for another one.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both she and Iroha carry around decks of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards with them. She also does the same squiggly smile that Iroha does on occasion.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: She really wants her parents' approval. Turns out to be subverted, and her speech to Hitaru and Jiro suggests she views them with some level of disdain.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Iroha realizes that their Yu-Gi-Oh match is essentially this. If Akemi wins, it's the first time she'll ever have beaten Iroha in a card game; if Iroha wins, it's only because she was able to beat strategies specifically designed to counter all her own. Either way though, it'll be proof to their siblings that they can beat the impossible.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: A tough love example, but she essentially says this to Hitaru and Jiro, encouraging them to stop being so cowardly.

Sylvia Green

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_7f31bcd15365cb87c40684dbb6fd43f8_3959cf62_1280.png

Emma's adopted and wealthy mother.

    The Divine One

Utsuro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_442cffa7e6fb7f7a491ed2168f2441fc_812afc5c_1280.png

The luckiest man alive, whose very existence has helped set many things in motion.

  • Born Lucky: When he was born, he blessed all those around him with Divine Luck, as they were rewarded with good health and his parents won the lottery. According to many, his luck is borderline Reality Warping. Unfortunately, he himself was Blessed with Suck; while his luck lets him accomplish any task he wants, all he gets are the results. He never has to put effort into achieving anything, leaving him horribly bored and apathetic toward life.
    • And worse, this extends to everyone he grants his luck to. It's only temporary and is bound to not just weaken, but reverse at some point. For people like Maku and Chiaki, whose lives are tied to it, this is a terrifying prospect.
  • Connected All Along: Not only is he connected to the Voids and Mikado, but also Chiaki. Her mother worked in the same hospital he was born in, curing her infertility.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Unfortunately, his parents became greedy and began exploiting Utsuro for their own selfish purposes. It reached the point that, when he refused to cooperate, the family fell apart and Utsuro was left homeless. It doesn't help that he's still hounded by people who try to exploit his luck for their own gain.
  • Famed In-Story: He and his story are pretty famous, although most think he's just an urban legend.
  • The Ghost: He's yet to appear in the story proper, but his presence is greatly felt.
  • Good Powers, Bad People: Divine Luck has been shown to do things like cure illnesses, grant wealth and keep people alive past the point of death. Unfortunately, Utsuro himself is an apathetic, selfish person even before he became a member of Ultimate Despair. See Jerk with a Heart of Jerk.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Despite blessing random people with his Divine Luck and improving their lives for the better, Utsuro only helped them not out of any sense of kindness or understanding but mainly to cope with his bored existence and to obtain some form of stimulation.
  • The Heavy: Downplayed, since he's not really an antagonist yet thanks to time travel, but him granting people Divine Luck lead to the formation of Void, the rise of Mikado and even Chiaki's birth.
  • Identical Stranger: To Yuki Maeda. It's because of this uncanny resemblance that Yuki was targeted by the External Agents of Despair and Mikado in the original timeline.
  • Powers as Programs: Divine Luck, as Sora describes, is a power that can be passed around from one person to another if the holder desires. It went from Utsuro to Akane to her to Yuki in the original timeline.
  • Walking the Earth: According to the Voids, he wanders Japan, granting Divine Luck to those in need.
