Ask the Tropers:
openIs this okay?
Hello! I am completely new to trying my own hand at adding to Trope and Fandom pages and wanted to ask, i have come across several instances of a Trope being linked on a fandom page, but not no link to the fandom exists on the page of the trope?
Like, for example, in the character section for The Magnus Protocol there is a character who is stated to fit the trope called "Parents as People" but the character is not listed on the Trope page for"Parents as People" and i wanted to ask if tgats intentional?
Does that mean that this character or Fandom does somehow not "count" as an occurrence of the Trope?
Or can i just add it to the Trope page in the same way that the others are?
Or am is that against the rules?
(Please dont yell at me over this, i am Very new to this and would never edit something like that without being completely sure its allowed)
Thanks in advance for your replies!

I commented out an example placed by Hisha P in Funny.Humans B Gone because I felt it was a zero context example, only for them to uncomment it back without an edit reason.
openFetishy example on VideoGame.SuperAdventureIslandII?
I was looking at VideoGame.Super Adventure Island II when I saw this example:
- Mr. Fanservice: Master Higgins is quite muscly in the opening cutscenes along with being stocky; he's mostly naked for the first level or so until he finds armor and the soles of his feet can be seen down to the individual toe beans.
Weirded out by it, I saw it was Digipig that added it, fairly recently on January 11th, 2024. I did a quick check to see if they had posted any similar examples to this on other pages, but not from whatI can see from recent exmaples. I don't know if there's a habit there or not.
Regardless, the character isn't really made to be made attractive, so I think it's misuse regardless.
Edited by PlasmaPoweropen AxCrazy/TheDCU and pages like it: improper split, right?
AxCrazy. The DCU hosts examples not just from the comic universe called The DCU, but also from works adapted from it (films, TV shows, video games). There are several subpages on Franchise. The DCU like it that hosts examples from adaptations. Did not feel like waving mod fiat for splitting it up but I don't think this is at all proper:
- These pages are not that long (I've been meaning to get a project going just BECAUSE they tend to be so short, but this ATT is for the examples from other media)
- It's not even like the subpages for Star Wars or the Marvel Cinematic Universe where you can claim shared continuity between these different mediums. Just because someone is also Ax-Crazy in the source doesn't mean their examples should share space. Conversely, it doesn't mean Ax-Crazy is a "franchise-wide trope" and played the same way in adaptations.
- Unless one is keeping an eye on the medium-specific subpages and maintaining the subpage to make sure new examples get moved the page will be "incomplete": for example, Harley Quinn (2019) is adapted from DC Comics and has an entry on AxCrazy.Western Animation but the show is not on AxCrazy. The DCU as of writing).
So yea I would like to chop up the page and send everything back to the medium-specific subpage from whence it came. Thoughts? Objections?
Edited by SynchronicityopenIs it safe to recreate Fanon/PuyoPuyo? Videogame
Regarding https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanon/PuyoPuyo, it was cut for good reason since I didn't really touch it then. Right now I have two examples for fanon regarding characters, so is it okay if i re-open it as long as I have at least TWO examples or something?
if yes, thank you so much since i really love puyo
openTrope Cofifiers and Namers
I always wonder why the page doesn´t include a message in the media that, in some way, is a trope codifier, namer or creator. Like I get it, some of those are basically related to real life or mythological aspects of our culture, but I think it could be easier if some pages include that kind of notes. For example:
War of the worlds Trope Creator of: -Tripod Terror -Alien Invasion
Lord of the Rings Trope Creator of: -Our elves are different
Starship Troopers Trope Creator of: -Power Armor -Bug War
openChikn Nuggit and Weblinks in Examples Web Original
The Funny and Heartwarming Moments subpages for Chikn Nuggit feature examples that implement weblinks. Sadly, in numerous cases, this is at the expense of context. Each example should stand on its own; the reader shouldn't be expected to view every relevant short just so they can understand why something is silly or sweet. Such examples, as far as I know, are in violation of Weblinks Are Not Examples. Also, examples that do provide proper context make the weblinks redundant.
I've already commented out two examples on the Heartwarming subpage for blatantly lacking sufficient context, but I feel more in-depth cleanup may be in order and would appreciate any assistance. For instance, would a Short-Term Project thread help?
resolved UPDATE work pages with no examples
My apologies, but I accidentally locked the original ATT: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/query.php?parent_id=133619&type=att
Turns out, Toy Storyin Space Play Set DID respond to my notifier when I sent it on the same day, but for whatever reason I did not receive a notification. This was on the 21st. I saw it just now.
Aside from that sudden notification issue, their reply was not helpful at all. Instead of telling me anything specific, they said that it's "somehow their fault". I'm pretty sure quoting the full line is against the rules, but anyway they made no reference to correcting anything in particular.
Now what?
Edited by Lermisresolved Is WetTShirtContest a unisex or gendered trope?
The description of the main Wet T-Shirt Contest trope page doesn't list it as a gendered trope. However, the Playing With page for Wet T-Shirt Contest has a Gender-Inverted entry that lists men being in the contest, suggesting that the trope is Always Female, and some examples have followed suit (I think) by listing male examples as "inverted".
I've been reviewing a potential discussed example and would like to ask for clarification for whether the trope is gendered, especially since its Super-Trope of Sexy Soaked Shirt is unisex; it's because if the trope is unisex, then I think the Playing With page and the examples that follow its listing conventions should be edited to reflect that.
resolved work pages with no examples
Yesterday Toy Storyin Space Play Set created two work pages with zero examples: Fanfic.A Ghostto Remember You By and Fanfic.TONIGHT Restart From This Night.
I sent them a notifier yesterday that said that work pages need to have examples, and that the name for the first fic should be Fanfic.A Ghost To Remember You By as opposed to what it is now.
They fixed the ghost thing, but somehow it still reads as "A Ghostto Remember You By" in the page, and they haven't added any examples. In addition, they added the fics to a few indexes already.
I checked the rest of their edit history and it seems fine (no issues pop up) so asking ATT may be premature, but I've never seen anyone create a work page with NO examples whatsoever.
resolved Nononsensecapeesh
...Is a troper that keeps violating our editing policies, even after notifiers (and one attempt to reach out on a thread).
Primarily, the notifiers have been about ZCE and indentation. And yet, it has not made a difference, at least when it comes to proper example context (indentation they seem to have gotten a grasp on). But the issues run deeper than this. In the past few days alone, their examples also contain:
- Speculation and arguable examples, especially when it comes to the balloon man.
- Some slightly awkward grammar
- Misplaced examples
- General trope misuse.
The time I tried to ping them to a thread was over a unilateral and improperly split character's page, which they also never cleaned or indexed. They ignored my attempt to reach out. It's also worth noting that my most recent notifiers to them were in March.
resolved The Ron the Death Eater example from YMMV/SonicX Anime
I wanted to make this discussion because I saw that the Ron the Death Eater example for Chris Thorndyke was deleted. Here it is.
- Ron the Death Eater: Chris Thorndyke is often viewed by fans as a selfish, spoiled brat, who's life isn't all that bad as he claims it is, and being more obsessive over Sonic than Amy is. However, Chris isn't really a bad kid. His whiny moments like in episode 49 were due to his fear of loneliness, which kept him from handling the situation of Sonic returning to his world more positively, especially since the news sprung upon him unexpectedly and was pretty impactful for him, and he was acting more traumatic and in denial than like a spoiled brat. His clinginess to Sonic and his fear of loneliness is due to being neglected by his parents since he was little, as he had to spend most of his time alone inside his huge and empty mansion without friends or siblings, making his life feel very empty and he didn't want to lose the one person who filled that void with his friendship and adventures. This also applies to when Chris shut down the portal to stop Sonic from going back to his world. Chris didn't shut down the portal because he's a spoiled brat. He did it because his emotions and fears got the best of him, that he made a reckless choice without thinking clearly.
I actually agree with this example, but it was deleted because apparently it was added by a ban evader. I am for adding it back because although Chris is not my favorite character of this show (due to some issues with how he was written), I do agree that fans do tend to demonize this kid.
openSML ideas Web Original
If I want to make recap pages for SuperMarioLogan I have some ideas and questions. Most videos end with a question, can the SML question be put on the bottom or in the image which is the thumbnail?
A few videos changed the title from Mario to Jeffy's dad and Bowser to Junior’s dad. The reason is that the SML cast got a cease and desist letter from Nintendo where they can’t use those names. Should I use the original title or the current title? Examples are in these links: https://sml.fandom.com/wiki/Mario_Sells_Jeffy! https://sml.fandom.com/wiki/Bowser%27s_Change!
openTrope Examples Folders: When to use the "Other" folder? (for genres) Videogame
Hi, I noticed a whole ton of tropes listed under any given media are often not crosswicked to the trope page as examples, so I've been meaning to do that whenever I can.
This might be pedantic but when should I use the "Other Games" folder vs just making a new genre folder to put the example in?
For example Absurdly High Level Cap has many examples in its "Other Games" folder. Some of these games could probably be moved to their own genre folders now. But there's also some folders which only have single examples- games could have gone to "Other Games" instead (I imagine it would be pointless to change that now unless there's too many folders one day).
So what's the best course of action when adding a new entry and there's no fitting genre folder (yet). Put it in "other"? Make a new folder unless there's too many folders already? Or does it not even matter?
Thanks.
openHardTruthAesop: needs TRS?
I noticed the description for Hard Truth Aesop states "This kind of moral is — at the least — subjective. Sometimes an author thinks they're delivering a hard truth, but the audience sees it as common knowledge, or vice versa. Since one person's hard truth is another's dangerous falsehood, examples belong on this page regardless of whether their Aesops are objectively true, and regardless of how much the audience is convinced that they are."
This makes it sound like it should be YMMV as what's considered a "Hard Truth" is subjective. But when it was renamed from Family-Unfriendly Aesop, it was decided to make non-YMMV due to misuse of complaining against the Aesop. Since then An Aesop was realized to have been intended as interpreted and decided to no longer allowed examples (instead using sub-tropes) as too broad/ambiguous to decide if it should be YMMV or not.
I've also seen examples used in situations where it wasn't supposed to be taken as an Aesop, which can come off as stealth complaining.
So I intend to add Hard Truth Aesop to Tropes Needing TRS. Any thoughts/objections?
resolved Did PlayingWith/IHitYouYouHitTheGround got cut?
One or two days ago, I submitted I Hit You You Hit The Ground for the Cut List as the examples listed are very charisy for a Playing With page; and since I thought the main page also was written somewhat badly and might not be a trope at all, I thought it'd be better to just cut the thing now instead to repair a Playing With page that shouldn't exist.
But I never got any notifications after that. Did it got cut after all? Last time I got a notification was when my request to cut Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me was refused, so does that mean that if it's accepted, it doesn't send a notification?
P.S.: Now I know.
openPossible edit war on Spying With Lana Webcomic
I deleted this entry on Spying with Lana for not being a valid example, as even looking at the page image will show Lana doesn't qualify, and it has been added back without explanation.
Original deleted entry:
- Ambiguously Brown: Lana's ethnicity is never mentioned, and her skin tone is definitely brown.
New entry:
- Ambiguously Brown: Lana has a notably darker skin tone than most of the 'white' characters we encounter, but not very dark. It's never made clear whether this is the result of ethnicity, tanning, or some other form of skin colouration (the latter two being notable possibilities given the frequent nature of her work).
resolved Yukianesa
Over the course of my TVT history since 2017, I have sent a total of 13 Issue Helpers to Yukianesa, of which 8 pertained example indentation. The most recent one was in February this year. Unfortunately, on LGBTFanbase.Video Games, they've added two sub-bulleted entries without adjusting the original entry (which pertains Stardew Valley) which was originally the only example and thus was at first-bullet level.
I don't think sending them another notifier will do any difference, considering that they've done the same kind of infraction during at least 7 years, without addressing the issue.
EDIT: Fixed an error with italics
Edited by MyFinalEditsopen Question about tropes that involve stock phrases
Certain tropes named after Stock Phrases does not necessarily have to involve the character saying some variation of the phrase, do they? The reason I'm asking is because I recently had a video example for I Lied get rejected because the character didn't say the exact phrase, but the basic principles of the trope were still present.
It's always been my understanding that the intention behind Examples Are Not Arguable is to state that either something is an example of a trope, or it isn't an example, and that entries that read along the lines of "X/Y is arguably an example of this trope" should be clarified or deleted.
However, lately I've noticed several instances of users seemingly interpeting the policy to mean that the words "arguable", "arguably" and other variants thereof aren't allowed to be used on the site in any context short of directly quoting a work, even on YMMV or Darth Wiki pages. Is this a correct reading of the policy, especially given that YMMV tropes are by their very nature something that people are going to potentially argue over?
