Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Okay, since I permission, here is my EP

What's the work?

Mortal Kombat by Malibu is a short lived comic series by Malibu Comics, based on first Mortal Kombat Arcade games and released in 1994. Due to low sales and, let's say, not very good quality the comics were cancelled in 1995, without any proper ending. While final miniseries was finished, it ended on a cliffhanger, which was never properly resolved. The comic series consisted from two six issue miniseries, two three issue miniseries, one two issue miniseries, two oversized issues and three one-shots. While everything starts with Mortal Kombat tournament, comic series quickly begins adding its own original characters and taken plot in their own direction.

Now, after reading through all comic series, I have one candidate to propose. I'm sure you know who he is.

Who is Shao Kahn?

A brutal Emperor of the Outworld, Shao Khan was an enemy to the Outworld's rightful ruler, King Jerrod, who ruled Outworld as benevolent king and kept it peaceful and Utopia like. Allying himself with Lin Kuei clan and uses them to distract Jerrod long enough for Shang Tsung to strike him from behind and kill him (as Shang Tsung taken a form of an infant to fool Jerrod), allowing Shao Kahn to take over Outworld and reduce it to a wasteland that we see in the present. Brainwashing Kitana from childhood to think that she is his daughter, Shao Kahn repeat his brainwashing every time Kitana finds out the truth and even created Mileena to try to replace Kitana (although he find her unfit to be her replacement), if she ever go against him.

In present time, being forced to participate in the tournament by the rules of the Gods, Shao Kahn tries to use it and bend the rules, so he could invade and conquer Earth to be his own domain. After Shang Tsung failed in winning the tournament and tried to get enough power to usurp Shao Kahn, Shao Kahn tortured him, but later give him youth, so he could serve him in another task. As Kitana started a rebellion and mutants refused to work with his legion of the dead (whom Shao Kahn controlled through Deathstone), who were led by Scorpion, Shao Kahn ordered the slaughter of all mutants of Outworld, children and infants included (these events occur in Baraka's one-shot), as well as many other Outworld people, so Shao Kahn could then revive them with Deathstone and control them completely, without fear of betrayal (as "dead couldn't betray him").

As Kitana led the team consisted of Sub-Zero, Baraka, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Jax, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade towards Shao Kahn, he sended his warriors to hunt them down and kill them, aside from Sonya, whom he captured and has Reptile brainwash her mind, so that she would become his wife and Shao Kahn could use this connection between him and a woman from Earthrealm to weaken the barriers and open a portal to invade Earth. His plans were thwarted by Kitana's crew and Shao Kahn decided to create another game for himself by dividing the fighters into Teams of Light (heroes) and Dark (his minions) and apparently have them hunt down ancient medallions and after some of them died, Shao Kahn was shown at the end of the comic torturing someone's soul (comic is very confusing about what happened in the end) as he says that "The final darkness fast approaches".

Heinousness?

Easily the most heinous being in comic series, while there is a God of Chaos, who wanted to have his fighter spread chaos over both Outworld and Earthrealm and Shang Tsung, who devoured the souls of many people during the comic, God of Chaos' end goal and intended bodycount is very vague to be anywhere close to Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung works directly under Shao Kahn and while he has his own agenda, he never doesn't do anything especially heinous outside of Kahn's reach. Shao Kahn reduced Outworld from peaceful heaven to a horrible wasteland with skeletons everywhere and "good forest" is turned into this, attempted full on genocide of mutants, whose perspective we see through Baraka's one-shot, desired to slaughter most of Outworld to keep them as his undead slaves and then his usual desire to conquer Earth through a bloody war. Enough for Shao Kahn to stand out.

Mitigating Qualities?

None that holds up. While in Kitana's one-shot he is shown to hold some affection on Kitana, he still brainwashed her several times and while he admitted that he could never loved Mileena like he does Kitana, he did wanted to replace Kitana with her. In Battlewave miniseries Shao Kahn abandons even these sights of seeming affection and was perfectly with fine with Kitana dying, after he finds out about her betrayal, to the point of fully separating her from his own forces by putting her to Team of Light and ordering his minions to kill her with the rest of the team.

Conclusion?

I will say Yes.

[tup] Khan. With Haman, not really seeing anything unique about that take on the character. Just that it feels like he'd blanket count in whatever work because all play on the attempted genocide. But we also had AgeOfEmpire propose an iteration of him from Superbook, so don't have much issues there.

ehhh, don't see the point of adding a version of Haman who does the same thing as the original, just seems like we'll end up flooding with versions of stories that may as well have the same entry as the original, so I'm a not for giving a unique entry but yes to the Benevolent Ones and Shao.

So here's my first try at proposing a character. Searched this character up with the search engine that TV Tropes has but I couldn't find it so hopefully, I won't annoy anyone but if this character was brought up and rejected, I apologize. The creature comes from Minecraft: Story Mode and comes from Season 1's Access Denied.

What's the work?: Not being that much of a TellTale fan, I can describe Minecraft: Story Mode in actuality your typical TellTale game but a bit lighter and softer than usual, using Minecraft elements but separate from that game and non-canon to it. You play as Jesse (whose gender can be selected) and you become famous after slaying the Wither Storm (who is almost irrelevant towards this character and cannot qualify because it has no moral agenda and the baddie who created it was redeemed). At the beginning of Episode 5, Jesse and the gang find an enchanted flint and steel and travels to interesting dimensions. The seventh episode, Access Denied is what we are focussing on. The episode continues subsequently in Episode 6 in which Petra assumes that Redstone means smart people. So the heroes enter the portal and we are later on greeted with a couple of new individuals such as Crown Mesa's Citizens and of course, PAMA.

Who is PAMA?: PAMA is short for Prototype: Autonomous Management Agent. It was created by Harper to make it chip monsters and induce them to be used for good use. PAMA however, saw the townspeople even better than the monsters, so it decided to chip them as a result. PAMA can chip mobs and use them to create what it considers perfect.

What Does It Do?: Reported by Harper, PAMA was supposed to only use monsters to do simple deeds such as farming but it decided that they weren't acceptable enough and chipped other mobs including chickens and more harmless beings. According to Eric Stirpe who wrote the episode, it was in control of Crown Mesa's population for 15 years.

When Jesse and the pack first meet PAMA, it seems to be friendly at first with having a smiley face and all but then it wants information about the other dimensions so it can go there and begin a horrifying adaption of perfection (chickens standing in perfect unison). At one point, PAMA chips Petra and Lukas for Jesse to tell the truth close to his/her homeworld. When Petra is chipped, she'll (or it considering PAMA is controlling her) effortless insult Jesse if the player wasn't being nice to her earlier (e.g tell her to be rational, she'll say something along the lines of "It's like what you told Petra: Please be rational."). Also, PAMA takes joy into chipping its victims. Besides, it has no problems chipping its creator, Harper.

Possibly the evilest (though avoidable) action that PAMA does in the plot is when it promises Jesse to help him/her and assist him/her into finding his/her homeworld and promises just to be useful to him/her. If the player is fooled by this act, it kills Jesse showing no remorse whatsoever.

Is it heinous by the standards of the story?: Concerning nearly other Minecraft: Story Mode villains, PAMA is eviler than the Wither Storm, The White Pumpkin (the reason why she was evil was that she was tired of living in her dimension and tried killing masses to find an enchanted flint and steel exactly comparable to Jesse's. She shows love for her cat too.), Aiden (A Jerkass who can be reclaimed), and Romeo (He did feel guilty for his crimes and even asks Jesse to leave him to die. Likewise, he can be recovered.). I'm not sure if PAMA is eviler than Hadrian (that's mainly because I am considering giving him an analysis to see if he qualifies as well). I will tell you guys that its motives are eviler than those previous examples I brought up.

Any Mitigating Factors or a valid Freudian Excuse?: The motive behind PAMA is that it wants to give its edition of perfect and turn everyone "useful" by basically giving its enslaved victims a Fate Worse than Death. At first, I thought you can use the argument that it's Obliviously Evil and think what its doing is right but considering that lack of sorrow to the point of chipping its maker, I consider it safe to state that it knows its immoral.

Mindless Grimdark?: In relation to other TellTale games, it's a family-friendly alternative to their other works. The game does have a dark plot early on with the Wither Storm with Ivor trying to prove The Order of the Stone was frauds (which they turn out to be). As well, The game had a plot with a murderer (The White Pumpkin) who tried murdering a group of Minecraft YouTubers over an enchanted flint and steel. The game, besides, uses words: "damn" or "hell" (except in the Netflix variation which I don't believe the episode is in that variant). The game, nevertheless, has a lot of comedic and light-hearted moments. Even PAMA has some funny moments ("You are attempting to be "cute". Attempt: Failed.").

Final Thoughts?: PAMA is the to the highest degree, the most threatening scoundrel in the game, perhaps to a greater extent than Hadrian (who I need to take a look at as I mentioned). Its goal is to yield anyone who is not perfect a Fate Worse than Death and as Lukas and Jesse points out, being chipped hurts. Not to mention, It comes off as a hypocrite when it tried to kill Jesse.

I hope I didn't waste anyone's time if this entity was rejected. Also, I may have referred to PAMA with a male pronoun when its meant to be genderless so expect that. I spent a lot of time writing and proof checking this and it's quite professional compared to what I normally write. I apologize if this was boring to read as it takes about 5 minutes to read it. My intention was that it requires enough reading for people to be convinced. I also apologize if my writing seems off as this is my first proposal for a CM.

Yes, I am using a modded version of Lego Indy 1 for my avatar.

I have a feeling that heinous section is kinda lacking as it talks that all other villains have redeeming qualities and not about how heinous their actions are. I played Minecraft: Story Mode several times and although i think about giving PAMA a Yes, i must ask about those mass murders and the guys from final DLC episode, who imprisoned and turned to slaves many people. Because all PAMA has going for it is brainwashing and enslaving populace of a village and i ant to refresh my memories if it is enough compared to entity who threatened entire world and villains of DLC episodes and second season?

Yes to the Fallen. Great first EP!

As the one who did Volsung....happy yes to the Benevolent Ones. However, I am firmly against the comic version of Shardar. When he discusses his son, he says clearly he was fat and useless "but he was my son". It reminds me of Senator Ethan Roark from the Sin City films when Roark Jr is dead and he comments that Ethan was still his son, for whatever else he was.

Yes to Barrie.

Here's OG!Shardar.

What's the Work?

The Brek Zarith Arc is the trilogy consisting of The Black Galley, Beyond the Shadows and The Fall of Brek Zarith. Thorgal is falsely arrested for helping prince Galathorn in his escape from the tyrant Shardar. Unfortunately after getting out of the Black Galley, the hero sees the destruction of his village and believes his wife Aaricia to be dead. But as it turn out, she's still alive but imprisoned in the castle of Brek Zarith.

Who is he?

Shardar-Le-Puissant (the almighty) is the tyrannical lord of Brek Zarith and the Big Bad of the Brek Zarith Arc.

What has he done?

Shardar usurped the throne of Brek Zarith from his cousin and legitimate heir Galathorn who was only a child before having the later imprisoned for years.

Long story short, during the events of The Black galley, Galathorn escapes the boat where he was transported, Shardar's son Veronar dies and Thorgal witnesses the destruction of his village.

One of Shardar's fleet rescued Thorgal's pregnant wife Aaricia and took her in Break Zarith's court where she gave birth to a boy named Jolan before falling in the coma. Shardar learning of Jolan’s supernatural abilities decided to use him for his plans of conquest and powers.

Aaricia eventually woke up but was kept imprisoned in the castle with her son for one year. On daily basis, Sharad and his pet sorcerer Elgith use Jolan for experiments to boosts his promising powers and read the future.

Shardar is properly introduced], forcing Baron Zorn to test his latest flying suit and jump over the cliff. After, Zorn fails and die, Shardar callously pushes the inventor into the sea as well. Meanwhile, Galathorn and Thorgal raises an army to lead the rebellion againt the tyranny.

The north viking's fleet arrives at the coast of Brek Zarith. Shardar forces Aarcia to watch as he burns the long ships with huge reflective mirrors.

While the castle celebrates the victory, the lord secretly poisons the wine causing his ENTIRE court from the soldiers and vassals to the slaves and cooks to drop dead before the rebellion storm in.

Before attempting to flee with Aaricia, Jolan and Elgith, Shardar activates a mechanism that causes the treasury's floor to open up its entire contents to disappear into a deep chasm underneath it. The Viking Jorund is unfortunate enough to be caught in the trap. Shardar welcomes and tells Glathorn that he did it to leave the kingdom bankrupt, hoping that, to restore it, Galathorn will be forced to become as big a tyrant as him.

To buy time, Shardar sends Elgith to face Thorgal knowing that the old wizard has little chance against the robust warrior.

Shardar later reveals to Aaricia his intention of building a new empire using Jolan as his weapon and that now his mother is no longer needed. Realizing that Arricia secretly substituted her baby with a stone, he ties her up over the cliff intending to torture her and draw Jolan nearby. Luckily Thorgal comes to the rescue and the tyrant falls off the cliff though not before trying to drag the woman with him.

Differences between Comic!Shardar and Novel!Shardar

As you can see, the original version has fewer crimes although he's still vile in his own right.

  • In a case of Unrelated By Adaptation, Shardar is Galathorn's cousin in the comic while in the novel he was an advisor who murdered his liege.
  • It's never said that he murdered Galathorn's family. In fact, Galathorn's sister Syrane shows up alive in a latter issue!
  • He's much less of a over the top Mad Scientist in the comic and we only see him experimenting on Jolan.
  • There's no harem of young girls in the comic
  • Oddly enough despite the novel doing Adaptation Expension, the scene where Shardar kills a Baron and an inventor is omitted.
  • It's never said that Shardar intended to kill Galathorn and Jolan to activate his machine.
  • Aaricia and Jolan remains at Brek Zarith for one year in the comic and four in the novel.

Mitigating Factors'

Aaah. Don't we love arguing about potential single line disqualifiers like "Look at my mother" or "Fenris what have they done to you"?

Basically, there's a scene where Shardar seemingly mourns his son Veronar who was killed by the v-Vikings in the Black Galley. See here and here.

Aaricia: What point is there in living if it's to be a prisoner in this palace deprived of my son?
Shardar: You're forgetting that it's your people who deprived me of mine, Aaricia. When they took off with my Black Galley. Veronar was lazy, narrow minded and cruel, I'm forced to admit it, but he was still my son, Aaricia, my only heir. But the time to settle the score has finally come. Look Viking Princess!

This is the only time when Shardar mention his son. Later, when he directly faces the Vikings who killed Veronar, he doesn't allude to him in any fashion and instead taunts Galathorn about his upcoming failures. BUUUUUUUUUUUUT, we previously discussed over the fact that that a villain doesn't have to be miserable 'ALL THE FREAKING TIME while mourning a loved one. For example, in Trollhunters, Gunmar mourns his son in the second season and doesn't mentions him a lot later, yet it's still disqualifying.

Otherwise, Shardar has no other redeeming features. I mean one could argue that burning the ships was self-defense since they were about to assault his castle but forcing Aaricia to watch is definitely a Kick the Dog.

Heinous Standard

I thing he's good considering the ressources and screentime. He has no magical abilities like the Benevolent Ones and lack psychic powers from villains like Slive and Ogotay.

Verdict

As usual Your call. I think it's a very tough case so I could see either way. I personnally leans slight "No".
