Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

@Kylo

I first joined the site under a different account back in early 2011. I forgot the password to it (and later gave it to my cousin when I remembered the password) so I made this account in July or August 2012, back when I was 14.

Yeah, so, I've just come back and read your advice, so... let's get to writing this.

What's the work?

The Assassination of Twilight Sparkle is a My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Death Fic by Rated Pony Star.

A year after Twilight’s coronation, she’s murdered by a jealous Blueblood and his conspirators, believing her to be trying to usurp Celestia. The fic picks up four months later, as Celestia comes out of mourning to visit her student’s grave one last time. The story is currently complete A sequel, titled Aftermath of a Fallen Star, is now available to be read. It features everypony's reactions to Twilight's death, and how it affected ponies, sometimes in ways you wouldn't expect. It is also complete.

Part 2.5 consists of two stories which is (currently) titled under Path Of The Dragon and Path Of The Tyrant. Both are currently in progress.

Who is he?

He's a Canterlot noble and the father of canon character Prince Blue Blood from "The Best Night Ever" and the OC Majesty Blue Blood, wed to Alura in Arranged Marriage. He's The Dreaded among his fellow nobles because of his skills in "The Game" (Basically Game of Thrones with ponies). He's planning on turning Majesty into the local equivalent of The Antichrist, called the Black Star here, in the belief she will become a Dark Messiah. To do this he tries to escape with her and his clan to Unicornia, but Luna intecpts him and sics the Tantabus on him as a Fate Worse than Death for his crimes.

What does he do?

I already talked about it in my previous post, but to repeat:

  • Involved himself in very shady deals, up to and including high treason and murder.
  • Was the REAL orchestrator of Twilight's death and everything that happened as a result. Events recorded in Aftermath of a Fallen Star. He's caused A LOT of misery he's completely unrepentant for.
  • He blackmails Gallant Heart with his brother's life to get him to go trough with it.
  • He rutlessly sacrifices his own son to burn at the stake to erase all connections.
  • He poisons his own wife, possibly the only person he respects, not loves, respects so he can escape to Unicornia with his daughter, Majesty.
  • He plays The Corrupter to both his children: Blueblood with his lessons, Majesty by Blatant Lies about the events.

Heinous by the standards of the story? Easily, most of the villains are three dimensional villains who either have a Heel Realization. Are Anti villains with either Standards, loved ones or both. Or have a Freudian Excuse or good intentions.

Amadeus possesses neither of the first two and the third is very weak.

Blueblood, The standard of evil I, Rated Pony Star and all the readers take happens to have all the above in some way.

Any mitigating factors?

Not really. While he does seem to have a Freudian Excuse in that his father never loved him, it's not elaborated upon. Wich is notable because his son's Used To Be A Sweet Kiid status is emphatized on, but with Blueblood we just get one line.

He also has the most agency of any of the villains, as unlike the others, he doesn't answer to, nor is driven by anyone.

Final Thoughts?

When I first read Aftermath of a Fallen star I looked at the YMMV section and was surprised that Amadeus wasn't listed, so I've decided I wanted to fix that because I, like many other readers, really hate and loathe this vile character.

So, I already did the info as I was asked and also have the Complete Moster entry a bit back, I think that would be all.

This one was tricky, because there were so many good potholes, but I think I got the 5 top ones; I'm open to changes:

  • The Hunchback Of Notre Dame: Judge Claude Frollo, the Minister of Justice, is a deeply prejudiced and hypocritical official who seeks to totally exterminate the gypsies scattered around Paris. Frollo introduces himself by murdering a fleeing mother and nearly drowning her infant child for the crime of being deformed. With the archdeacon's intervention instilling the fear of divine retribution in him, Frollo dubbed the child Quasimodo and raised him in isolation under emotional abuse. Deeply enraptured with the gypsy Esmeralda, Frollo resolves to make Esmeralda his or watch her burn, offering "choose me or the fire" when she's tied to the stake. Frollo has gigantic sections of Paris burned in his further attempt to find the gypsies; orders a family torched alive in their own house; and even tries to murder Quasimodo himself in the end after having seemingly murdered Esmeralda, forsaking all piety to reveal the monster he's always been within.

Also. I'm 18 :P

Also, Regarding the Frollo.entry...Isn't Gypsy considered a slur in the Anglo Sphere and Europe? (But no in Spain or Latin America). I know that the movie itself uses Gypsy but still, it makes me a.bit akward. Is like putting "Stalin killes millions of Chinks" in his Twilight Of The Red Tsar entry.

Huh, that's news to me. I know the term "to gyp someone" is considered a slur, but unless I'm mistaken, the term itself isn't.

Now, having said that, I just looked it up, and found this, so who knows?

Yea to blue Blood.

Before I get to Dracula from Scream!, the Girl from the Well examples and some others...there's one I owe Jackie.

What's the Work?

Clean Room is an 18 issue horror series by Gail Simone. The premise? Chloe is a journalist whose fiance, Philip, suddenly shoots himself one day. No sign of unhappiness, mental illness, nothing...the one lead she has? Philip's interest in writer and self help guru quintillionaire Astrid Mueller...it turns out Astrid is a very, very dangerous individual, but one dedicated to humanity. There are creatures, once thought of as demons, entities from other worlds, who attach themselves to humanity. Astrid uses their own technology, namely the Clean Room, to fight back...a pure white room with which she can access memories and even control reality to an extent, as there is a demonic invasion on the horizon...our first CM from this series? Enter Astrid's 'number one fan,' Artus Greenhand.

who is Artus Greenhand?

A man who's disturbingly styled himself to look like Astrid down to the hair, who runs a massive fan site of her, Artus is an obsessive psychopath with a little secret: he's a serial killer. Abducting multiple women, Artus brings them to his garage, dismissing them as just 'critters,' before he shaves them to make their hair into wigs. Artus proceeds to cut and torture them to death before disposing of the corpses. However, one of his last victims got free when he was torturing her and managed to badly wound him before she succumbed to her wounds.

Artus died on the way to the hospital, but...secretly made pacts with the entities who want the whole Astrid problem handled. Artus gleefully jumps at the chance, returning from the dead and decides to steal the clean room for himself. Artus proceeds to infiltrate Astrid's organization and seizes control, showing Chloe and Astrid's bodyguard Killian his serial killer past...before revealing that there's a bit more to the technology and leaving them stranded in the past with himself who seems intent on torturing them to death. Artus? Intends to dispose of Astrid to take the Clean Room and do whatever he wants while letting the entities have earth....Astrid is having none of it.

Showcasing why she's the series' ultimate badass, Astrid completely dominates Artus in the fight and overwhelms him, showing him the memories of his death, warping them back to the past and rescuing Chloe and Killian....Artus? she leaves him to relive the moments of his death, over and over and over. Forever, where he will be taken by a horrific death entity, as Astrid contemptuously adds "critter" at the end of the taunt before leaving him to his fate.

Mitigating Qualities?

Clean Room is dark as hell. The entities? Turn out to be exiles and criminals from a far, far more advanced alien civilization who send their riffraff to earth because it's a backwater and because they don't really have a death penalty, so they choose to amuse themselves by screwing with humans...there are other killers, and Astrid is ruthless as hell....like she chooses her people around her with psychological flaws so she can use the Clean Room to break them if she needs to. Utimately though? Artus is a rather depraved serial killer, torturer and seeks to give over the world to the entities solely to satisfy his own twisted desires, and for a guy with zero powers in this series, it's pretty impressive. As for redeeming qualities? Freaking zilch. He's a misogynist lunatic who has an unhealthy obsession with Astrid, nothing more.

Conclusion?

A yes. Jackie will handle the series Big Bad and there may be one other worth a post.

[tup] Artus. Elfen, I'm guessing Astrid's not the Big Bad; she seems more of an Anti-Hero or WIE—not the nicest person, but ultimately on the side of good.
