Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Here's a write-up for Himmler, and a slight rewrite for Heydrich.

  • The Man in the High Castle:
    • Oberstgruppenfuehrer Reinhard Heydrich is the second-in-command of the SS, the organization charged with enforcing the Nazi German ideology of a Master Race. Organizing the total genocide of the Jewish people in both Europe and Nazi-occupied America, Heydrich also gleefully enslaved the entire continent of Africa, referring to the natives he hunted down as "tribal subhumanoids". Wishing to exterminate the Japanese whom even Adolf Hitler wished to keep an alliance with so the Nazis could rule the world alone, Heydrich orchestrates the public assassination of the visiting Japanese Crown Prince to attempt to provoke a declaration of war. When a remorseful Nazi spy passes on nuclear technology to his Japanese contacts in an attempt to preserve peace, Heydrich hunts him down, only keeping him alive because of his access to Hitler, and threatens to kill his family if he does not assist Heydrich in his assassination of the Fuehrer. Wishing to kill the Nazi leader to take over the Third Reich and destroy the Japanese Home Islands, when his scheme is discovered by John Smith, Heydrich invites him to a hunting party to arrange an "accidental death" for him to keep his scheme under wraps. Wearing his title as "The Man with the Iron Heart" with pride, Heydrich is a remorseless man feared and despised by even fellow Nazis.
    • Reichsfuehrer-SS Heinrich Himmler was one of the chief architects behind the Holocaust and masterminding Germany's wars of aggression. While part of the recently-named Reich Chancellor Martin Heusmann's war council, Himmler is dismissive of the tens of millions of casualties that would result from the nuclear war of annihilation the Nazis are planning against Japan. Himmler subsequently arrests Heusmann after learning of his murder of Adolf Hitler and to assume power. As Fuehrer, Himmler forces Joe Blake to kill his father to prove his loyalty to the Reich, and has his Lebensborn elite soldiers sent out to assassinate ex-Nazi defectors and Japanese politicians, overseeing these soldiers completing their training by killing "subhuman" targets. Himmler has also ordered the construction of an Interdimensional Travel Device to conquer neighboring dimensions and authorizes torturous experiments on human test subjects, and finally initiates mass riots across the Greater Nazi Reich after having former American monuments destroyed as part of "Jahr Null". Fully convinced of the genocidal and totalitarian policies of National Socialism, Himmler is one of the single-worst Nazis depicted in the show.

Yes to Himmler, Malcolm, Harker, Christopher, Raio and Joko.

@ ACW, no one in Ducktales counts so far. Magica De Spell, the Big Bad from season 1, had a build up as a sinister and cruel figure, being quite abusive towards her niece, forcing her to do her bidding against her will, but by the end of season 1, she was just a big goof ball. However I think this new cartoon is more dramatic then the 87 cartoon and would more likely to have a keeper then the 87 cartoon or say MLP. Its made by the same people who made Gravity Falls. Maybe they will bring back Merlock, the Big Bad of the Ducktales movie, he was pretty cruel, but did not do enough on screen to count.

Also, wow. Ambar, Camberf. I know every troper is banable, but it's a weird feeling to find out how regulars on this thread got suspended/banned.

To the person who brought up Palawa Joko, do you think any of the Elder Dragons are bad enough individually to count? Zhaitan and Mordremoth have each shown levels of sadism that exempt them from Blue-and-Orange Morality.

Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion.

Kinda late, but I'm voting [tdown] on Riot, but [tup] on Drake.

Its crimes should definitively be added on Drake's writeup but I feel this villain doesn't do enough on its own to warrant an entry to itself. It doesn't have much of a defined personality like Drake.

Yes to Raio and I wanna bring up someone I've wanted cut for a while and that's Lyndon James from Pretty Little Liars. While I'll admit I haven't seen the show, nor do I intend to, I feel this is a case of a Hate Sink being pushed into heinous territory he just doesn't meet. Looking back at the EP it looks like his total attempted bodycount is four and two of those are only done after he's been attacked and mortally wounded. As for the resources argument that was made for him, I'm not sure how well that works when there seem to be about ten people who play the role of "A" and looking over the character sheets, it seems everyone is kinda up to something in that world. All in all, while he's a creepy stalker, I think his low bodycount, even lower if you look at his pre-meditated crimes, just doesn't push him far enough in terms of heinous deeds to quite meet what we're looking for here.

Thoughts?

Im fine with cutting lyndon as well having talked to you. I dont think he'd keep on his onw let alone compared to other villains.

The fact that two of his attempted victims come from when he's already been attacked as well as the fact that there is like a bunch of people who are A means I really dont think resources work here either. Add in the fact that A uses mental torture to all of this on top of some of there murders and its hard to argue he does enough.

Reading his entry and eh...I'll lean towards a keep. Kidnapping and attempting to kill somebody while forcing their girlfriend to watch just barely edges him as enough for me. (Though I guess that depends on the heinous standard of the show)

Like I said, I get the Hate Sink angle and he's definitely a prick with nothing good about him but killing one person and then forcing a main character to watch while you kill their girlfriend strikes me as pretty small potatoes for any dark drama series.

I mean he's only killed a single person and than tries to kill one more in front of their girlfriends. Is that really enough even if its on its own. (Im not including the other two attempted as trying to kill somone well being in a fight with somone for your life, shouldnt be taken into account even if your a dick.)

That and every member of the A-team surpesses him which is like 10 separte people from wikipedia, so resources dont really work here.

Yeah, you got to be pretty bad in a dark drama show. Montgomery de la Cruz is my go-to example. He has nearly hitting people with his car without remorse, groping Courtney, beating up Alex, regularly bullying people, running Clay off the road in an attempt to kill him, attempting to make Alex (a suicide survivor) shoot himself, vandalizing the shop of a dead girl's parents and taunting them about her death, and brutally beating and raping Tyler. Yet he still was deemed not heinous enough, granted he is in a work with a serial rapist.

Yeah, cut Lydon.

It's writeup time again!

  • The Magic Serpent (1966):
    • Daijo Yu{u}ki is the evil ruler of the Omi Kingdom. Previously Lord Ogata Samanosuke’s power-hungry general, he organized a raid on the Ogata clan that killed everyone, with Daijo killing Ogata himself. With Ogata’s son Ikazuchimaru escaping, Daijo orders Orochimaru to kill him. As ruler, he has women kidnapped from villages serving as his sex slaves. Finding out that Ikazuchimaru’s still alive, he arrives at a village and kills the farmer Zenbei, ordering his men to behead his daughter and young son in front of the village as a lesson for anyone who dares try and help Ikazuchimaru, be it woman or child, before kidnapping Saki to add to his harem. Cornered by Ikazuchimaru, he begs for mercy and tries to kill him.
    • The aforementioned Orochimaru is Daijo’s shape shifting second-in-command, and Ikazuchimaru’s arch enemy. Assisting in Daijo’s raid on the Ogata clan, he murders Lord Ogata’s wife and tries to kill the young Ikazuchimaru. Ordered by Daijo to kill his own mentor Dojin Hiki, he poisons and fatally wounds him. Desiring to kill Daijo in order to secure the throne himself, he spreads the news of Ikazuchimaru’s arrival so that he can kill and pose as him for when he becomes ruler. Finding out that Tsunade’s his daughter, he takes advantage of her closeness to Ikazuchimaru by ordering her to poison and stab him when he’s unconscious, insulting and disowning her when she refuses to do so. Killing his traitorous henchman Momobe, he heads to Ogata castle and tries to kill Ikazuchimaru himself.

  • Yakuza Hunters Duology:
    • Final Death Ride Battle: Junko is the psychopathic Yakuza second-in-command to Murakawa, and Asami’s Arch-Enemy. Growing jealous of Asami after joining her gang, Junko betrayed her by allowing Murakawa to use Asami’s women as drug mules in exchange for money, making him her sex slave so that she can control the Shoryu gang. Using her new leadership, she kills the women in Asami’s gang who won't join hers, shows no care for her own henchmen, and kills Asami herself. Doing whatever she can murder the resurrected Asami, she sends a country singing trio to gun down a bar she’s at, and orders her men to kidnap Yayoi. With Asami in her grasp, she has her men rape and torture Yayoi while she tortures Asami by cutting her with a bouquet of rose thorns. When Asami and her gang invade Junko’s hideout, Junko slits Reiko’s throat in front of Asami and tricks her into chopping off the fingers on her left hand before trying to kill her again.
    • Duel in Hell:
      • Murakawa is the sadistic new leader of the Shoryu gang. A greedy psychopath, Murakawa plans to turn the entire Sagawa district into a casino, ordering his men to kill/scare off the district’s citizens, with around 70 people killed. With his wife Reiko disobeying him, he has her groin sliced with a chainsaw. When Miki refuses to leave her apartment, Murakawa has her hand and foot shot off, and orders Akira to kill her baby son Takashi in front of her before he blows her brains out. He then kidnaps Inokuma to let his men torture him, leaving his men to die when Asami invades his hideout.
      • The aforementioned Akira is a silent, cold-blooded assassin. A killer since birth, she decided to use her combat skills for evil and joined the Shoryu gang. Akira slays both civilian and Yakuza alike, casually killing Miki’s baby son Takashi on Murakawa’s orders. Fatally wounding Yuji when he tries to kill her, she possibly kills Asami during a duel.

I think I meant to say weaker proposals. I still consider him one of my betters ones in recent memory - Y'know with someone like the Storm King in my history.

Also now that I think about it, I wonder if the Teen Drama genre is one of those genres that have a heinous standard to match up too, with shows like Scream: TV Series, 13 Reasons Why or Sweet/Vicious.
