Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Isn't Cornwall technically responsible for both of them though? He's having US troops force out the Natives and it's his sugar plantation in Guarma that Fussar is overseeing.

Wait, why couldn't Colm have counted originally? He seems bad enough even under the old rules.

Though why did Colm kill Annabelle if he didn't even care for his brother in the first place? Is it that he killed HIS brother?

He killed Annabelle because he knew it'd hurt Dutch, nothing more. He admits straight up he doesn't give a single damn over the death of his bro.

Fair enough. I'll give a yes.

Isn't he from the second game though? I guess he'll go between Micah and Favours?

Both Colm and Micah are hired by Cornwall to work against Dutch's gang and given protection from the Pinkertons while doing so. His willingness to work with such open criminals and his unambiguously knowing and allowing Favours and Fussar to commit their atrocities for his profit reaches to the point where he has a hand in almost every major antagonist.

I see your side, but I guess it depends on how much we want to hold him responsible for as the Greater-Scope Villain.

New proposal

What’s the work?

Banshee: I am the cure is a comic prequel to Dying Light 2 Stay Human, taking place a few years before the event of said game. The story revolves around a doctor who is close to getting rid of the side effect for a vaccine against said virus, however said vaccine is denied and rejected, when General Buran decides to infect the city with it, she does everything in her power to stop it.

Who’s the candidate and what does he do?

General Buran is the main villain of the comic, when the doctor begs him for more time to work on the vaccine, Buran denies said vaccine and has all of her research materials and test animals killed in order to put to an end to it. After the doctor is kicked out, Buran takes it upon himself to have the medication sprayed across the city with a doctor telling him that he’s killed the city, of which he denies it claiming that he saved the city or at the very least what’s worth saving.

As the antiviral is sent across the city, it causes residents to become zombies of which they are shot dead by authorities to prevent further infections, the general also has built a shelter for the wealthy in rider to separate them from the poor, he’s later informed that the medicine will cause half the city to become infected of which he responds by denying her claim, the gas has now been applied to the entire city with intent of infecting more people, Buran socks the doctor in the face and has her infected, requesting her vaccine as a way of mocking her, her girlfriend shoots him in the back and has the gas hit everyone attending the party including Buran, the story ends with the doctor killing herself and her girlfriend becoming a banshee.

Mitigating Factors

None to speak of, at no point does Buran express any regret or well intentioned motives with his Poison and Cure Gambit, he’s a social Darwinist who believes only the people who survive the gas deserve to live, ready to sacrifice countless lives that he sees as expendable, all he cares about is money, even waltz and Williams from the game were well intentioned with their actions where as Buran was just greedy and wanted to exterminate the weak.

For heinousness, I feel he passes fine, dying light 2 does give us some nasties, but I think Buran easily manages to stand out in that regard since he was willing to sacrifice an entire city to an unsafe vaccine, having some of highest body counts in the series.

Final Verdict?

Easy Keeper

[tup] to the General.

Alright so I finished played the Ezio Collection of Assassin's Creed Games and I may have a few candidates worth discussing. The first candidate I’m going to discuss is a re-evaluation of a character given that we’ve updated our rules on regarding onscreen villainy. He debut in Assassin's Creed II so let us discuss it.

What’s The Work?

Assassins Creed II is the second installment of the AC franchise, and considered the most acclaimed, which introduces Ezio Auditore da Firenze who becomes an assassin and travels throughout Italy to kill off all the templars that murdered his father and brothers, and the mastermind bends those murders as well as many others is the templar’s leader, Rodrigo Borgia.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Rodrigo Borgia is the Big Bad of 2 and leader of the Italian sect of the Templar Order who orchestrated countless of murders in his quest to unite Italy under complete templar rule with himself leading it. Among these murders are Duke of Milan and Ezio’s father and two brother, one of whom was only an innocent child whom Rodrigo had killed anyway to make a point.

Rodrigo would then have the Pazzi family murder Florence’s leader Lorenzo Medici leading to their butchering of Lorenzo’s innocent brother when when the remaining Pazzi are unable to kill Lorenzo, Rodrigo would stab the Pazzi’s head Jacopo through the stomach and through the throat causing him to slowly bleed to death forcing Ezio to Mercy Kill him while Rodrigo would try to have Lorenzo kill in his home during a templar lair mission leading to the deaths of dozens of Lorenzo’s servants, guards, and other innocence.

Rodrigo would then travel to Venice meeting with the Barbarigo family where Rodrigo has the current Dodge of Venice poisoned to death while having replaced with his puppet, Spoiled Brat Marco Barbarigo, uncaring if Marco’s rule would be tyrannical. Thankfully Marco gets killed by Ezio before he could do any lasting damage to Venice, while Rodrigo travels to Cypress to claim the Apple of Eden.

Rodrigo would then return with the Apple and attempt to kill Ezio, only to be outnumbered by Ezio’s allies who help Ezio take the Apple from Rodrigo forcing Rodrigo to retreat. He would later hire the Orsi brothers to attack the city, Flori to claim a map marking the location of each page of the Codex. This leads to the Orsi to kill innocent people in Flori and nearly kill Catarena Sforza’s children, much to Rodrigo’s indifference.

Rodrigo would also convince approved CM Tomas Torquemada about the assassins and gives him a list of people for Tomas to kill, thus allowing Tomas to kill of almost every the assassins from Spain, wether be it hanging or burned alive on the stake in the 2016 film, as well as whomever Tomas deems a heretic, while Rodrigo would lure Christopher Columbus to Venice and have him killed their upon learning of Colombus embarking to America in Discovery.

Rodrigo would also rigged the Papal Election so that he would become Pope where under Rodrigo’s rule Rome would fall in ruin, with Rodrigo allowing crime, murder, and slave trading run rampant in the city even letting his son Cesare and his templar agents slaughter whomever they want, while most of Rodrigo’s concern is gaining access to the Staff of Eden and open the Vatican Vault and use whatever inside the vault to conquer all of Italy under his rule, while having his agent retrieve the Apple from Savonarola.

There was also rumors of Rodrigo committing what Shaun has described to be x-rated atrocities such as having hundreds courtesans brought to his chambers where they are most likely killed while also having sexually abusing his daughter Lucrezia, cue his video cutscene of a courtesan getting stabbed to death and another with Rodrigo lustfully sniffing Lucrezia’s hair.

However in 1499 Ezio would try to assassinate Rodrigo only for Rodrigo to use the Staff’s power to subdue Ezio before stabbing him before leaving him and the entire crow of people praying whom Rodrigo used the staff on to die in agony. Luckily Ezio would survive (as well as the crowed revealed in Brotherhood) and track Rodrigo down to the vault where Ezio defeats him before deciding to spare Rodrigo, explaining that it won’t bring his family back.

Rodrigo would tell Cesare that the assassins attacked him leading to the events of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, where Cesare attacks Monteriggioni and kill countless people there including Ezio’s uncle, while Rodrigo decides to maintain his control over Rome continuing to let Cesare and his agents commit the murders and other atrocities.

Rodrigo and Cesare would use their agent, The Cardinal, form the cult the Followers of Romulus, using them to terrorize and kill people, scaring people into becoming dependent on the church, while Rodrigo uses his other agent, the Master, to order the purging off every scholar in Rome, when he felt threatened that by enlightening people, they won’t trust the church, with former templar scholar, Nicolaus Copernicus, nearly becoming a victim, if it wasn’t for Ezio rescuing him.

Rodrigo also wanted test the Apple capabilities in Project Legacy and allow the child Giovanni Borgia to use the Apple to see his capabilities leading to Giovanni to suffer mind agony and hallucinations throughout the rest of his life as a result of Rodrigo using him as a test subject to see the extent of the Apple’s powers.

Rodrigo would also plan to poison his own son Cesare, when he proves to be uncontrollable with his influence in Rome weakening. However Lucrezia would tell Cesare about this leading to Cesare killing his father before remaining sick for months as a result of Rodrigo’s murder attempt on him.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

Okay his past consist of being a cardinal who originated from Spain and traveling to Italy to obtain power for himself. That’s it and it was established that Rodrigo has no interest in the Templar’s ideology of achieving peace through unification, merely seeking power for his own selfish gain, while having no regard for the hundreds people he’s arranged to be killed to achieve whether they are innocent, children, or even his own templars.

While he did not approved of Cesare attack Monteriggioni, it was only out of Pragmatic Villainy as it will caused the assassins to come to Rome and risk them taking Rome from him which they did and tries killing his own son when he’s a threat to his own power. It is worth mentioning that he never shown to any love or care for any of his family and children merely viewing them as pawns for his own plans while only viewing his daughter as a Lust Object he’s willing to sexually abuse. So yeah nothing here.

Other Militating Factors

Okay so with the more relaxed rule I think it is safe to say that even the bare minimum of onscreen villainy can add to his rap sheet. We go to a screen shot of a person being stabbed to death when Shaun said that hundreds of courtesans were brought to him by the cart load, another one of Rodrigo lustfully sniffing his daughter before Shaun basically confirms he was sexually abusing her, and a final screen shot of him smiling while hundreds of corpses are shown in the picture, with Shaun confirming that the killings continued, so yeah it’s worth mentioning.

Heinousness

Okay so while i may have one more candidate to discuss in this series (I may do him tomorrow), given the new more relaxed rules I think that Rodrigo does just enough to stand out in the AC universe, having orchestrated the murders of hundreds of innocent people if not more, including Ezio’s father and two brother, the latter of which Rodrigo had killed because he felt like it, one of them being just an innocent child

It’s worth noting that some other murder being extremely visceral and slow as shown with Jacopo’s murder forcing Ezio to Mercy Kill and its because of Rodrigo that Tomas learns of the Assassins allowing him to purge them in Spain, was willing to let a child get permanently scarred by a deadly mind-breaking weapon just to see its capabilities, sexually abusing his daughter, and letting crime and murders run rampant in Rome just so he can maintain his rule over Rome, and tries killing his own son when he proves uncontrollable (granted Cesare isn’t a saint but still)

Final Verdict?

I’ll leave it to you guys.

No to Rodrigo here.

I can't even begin to say how insanely out-heinoused he is at this point. "Offscreen villainy" has ceased to be the problem for him. We've got tons of templar leaders who are much, MUCH worse.

"Hundreds" of innocent people is old news. Torquemada has thousands killed. It's to the point we need to ask how many genocides they're responsible for.
