During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Here's an interesting movie I just found while browsing IMDb.

What Is the Work?

New York Ninja is a movie with a fascinating history. Originally shot in 1984 by its directer/co-writer/star John Liu, the movie remained unfinished for the longest time until 2021, where the studio Vinegar Syndrome found the footage, dubbed the characters over with era-appropriate celebrities and other New York-based voice actors like Wayne Grayson and Mike Pollock, gave it a soundtrack, and released it.

The plot’s about reporter John Liu (played by John Liu, but voiced by Don Wilson) being fed up with the rampant crime in New York, especially after the murder of his pregnant wife. So he decides to become a ninja vigilante, using shurikens and faulty smoke bombs to take out criminals, which earns him acclaim from the public and the city's children. But one dangerous criminal lurks the streets of New York that gives the New York Ninja a hard time.

Who Is He?

The Plutonium Killer (dubbed by Michael Berryman) is an ex-CIA agent who became an international criminal after falling victim to a government radiation experiment. For convenience sakes, I’m calling him TPK.

What has he done?

Obsessed with light, despite it harming him (it’s weird), TPK would become the leader of an international prostitution ring, having women kidnapped off the streets and tortured by sadists in his den. When he’s not doing that, TPK dons on a rubber mask to hide his facial deformities and prowls the nightly New York streets sadistically exposing his victims to his radiated skin, burning their bodies and killing them, leaving their bodies behind for the police to find.

Constantly outsmarting his own men attempting to one-up him, TPK later takes John's friend Randi hostage, taking her with him when John and the police raid his hideout. Having his men kill two people in a nearby helicopter warehouse, TPK threatens one of the pilots with death should he not act as his getaway pilot. But despite almost making an escape, the Ninja’s able to place a bomb onto the chopper, causing it to blow up and kill TPK as he wonders where that ticking noise is coming from.

Redeeming Qualities?

None. While it’s brought up that TPK was involved in an experiment, it’s never listed as an excuse for his crimes, and it’s never delved into as much as it could’ve; basically, it’s not that different from the Joker’s origins, and it’s about on par with many other 80s villains at that time of 'this happened to them, let's move on and not think about it'.

But aside from that, TPK shows no remorse for his crimes, and is well aware of what he’s doing.

Heinousness?

Dude’s a sadist who leads a worldwide prostitution ring, nuff said.

Conclusion

I think he’s a keep.

What is the Work

Tomb Raider 3 is the third instalment of the Tomb Raider franchise. It follows famous archaeologist Lara Croft in an adventure spanning the globe for 4 mysterious artefacts that were fashioned out of an ancient meteorite that crashed in Antarctica which had strange properties. In her adventures to find the artefacts, she ends up in London to find one of them the "Eye Of Isis", currently in the hands of the character I want to propose, Sophia Leigh.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

Sophia Leigh is the head of the corporation S Linc and is a woman who had somehow obtained the artefact back in the Victorian era and used it to become immortal. Making her company and having a building in London, Sophia would hire mercenaries to kill anyone who investigated her.

To help her become immortal and retain youthful, Sophia would offer jobs to struggling people as "lab assistants." The job really was for them to be slapped into a floatation tank for days while being submerged in the substances the Eye Of Isis created. Because they spent so long in it, it rotted their bodies in which Sophia has them thrown down a chute into London's sewers and the abandoned Aldwych station. Lara meets the leader of the gang of the experimented people who explained that he tried to kill himself but the experiments had left him immortal and said that Sophia takes the best outcome of the experiments for herself to keep herself immortal and young looking. Lara would eventually meet Sophia and fight her and seemingly kill her and claim the Eye for herself except...

Sophia returns in the expansion "Lost Artefact" and steals the fifth meteorite artefact, the "Hand of Rathmore" from Willard's estate. The Hand is much more volatile with it's properties and expels a large amount of mutagen. The hand accidentally causes a massive explosion in the Eurotunnel (there's no confirmed deaths with this) which Lara follows up on and discovers that Sophia has an underwater facility where she's using the Hand for more unethical experiments on humans and dolphins, this time mutating them and keeping them locked in cages. Lara ends up fighting Sophia in the catacombs of Paris and killing her for good.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Well no, Sophia experimented on humans leaving them immortal but rotting so she can find results to keep her immortal and youthful. In the lost artefact there's no dialogue but you see the humanoid mutants dead in cages and floating bodies in tanks so it's not really ambiguous there's experimentation on humans happening.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Well I'm taking the standard in the original continuity so it's TR 1 - Angel of Darkness and Sophia's use of experimentation is similar to Boaz from Angel of Darkness but with different outcomes. Boaz ended up making people insane and rabid and fed them to the Proto Nephilim. Sophia's experiments left people rotting but immortal and fully aware of their situation, just so she can retain youthful and immortal and considering she's well over 100 years old, she's been doing this for a while which gives her a little niche in my opinion.

Final Verdict?

What do you guys think

Wait why hasn't Sophia been brought up before. Tomb Raider has a page and got a deep dive into the series. I know people don't like me saying this but this feels odd.

Because nobody brought her up. If someone brings up issues, we'll deal with it then. Ordeaux, stop doing this. I've brought up 'obvious' keepers that nobody thought of before and that were missed, it happens all the time.

Yes.

Monochromon posted this in the YMMV without a proper effort post and I am certain it did not get any votes. We might need to cut it.

  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part Eight and a Half: Rainbow In The Dark: Dove Pale Will is a nobleman with the public facade of a philanthropist engaged to the princess of England, Elina Pendragon. In truth, he leads a vile operation in mutating Stand users For the Evulz and plans to open the doorway to allow a malevolent race of extra-dimensional horrors known as the Ocean Men to torment humanity as he watches gleefully from a distance. It is latter revealed that he was born in the original universe as Dario's half brother, Bastio due to be being a child by rape via Dario's father assaulting the mother of Dio's mother. The boy would be raised with love and affection, but the boy in spite of this love, was a gleeful torturer of animals and later poisoned his entire family out of boredom. Fearing his life would eventually end, he sought the counterpart to the Red Stone of Aja, the Blue Stone of Aria kept in the care of the Hamon monks. He would murder the monk protecting it, Tompetty and use its true power to become a body-swapping spiritual demon who preferred to take over the bodies of noble men to ruin their reputation such as the corpse of Caesar Zeppeli to become the seemingly kind priest, but secretly tormented his son born of rape of his mother- that said son would grow up to Diavolo, the leader of Passione with Bastio himself as the shadowy true leader of the organization that enabled the drug trade to children For the Evulz even if the means would lead to a convoluted plan to summon the Ocean Men. When this failed due to Giorno, he resorted to human trafficking, using Kosaku Kawajiri's body until exposed by Shizuka Joestar. When Pucci reset the universe, Bastio would possess the Caesar who had the man of the Holy Corpse crucified in front of his mother, Jolyne's despairing eyes. Millenia later, he would possess Dove Pale Will, using his antimatter Stand to make hostages of young children so the heroines would hesitated and in his pitiful death thralls, he exposed Elina's Muse- an anthropomorphic race of were-animal Stand users discriminated by humanity- secret in order to ruin her legacy, hoping for a quick execution for the Pendragon's deception of the masses. A truly vile monster in every sense of the word, he lacks the abusive background of many of viler major villains, simply doing evil because he could.

I've checked the fic and it seems it was put up in April last year.
