Do Ayakashi Triangle and Misfit at the Demon King Academy really count given the are basically restarting series that have both aired several episode but their productions schedules fell apart completely that they weren't able to completely in their original programming blocks.

The Devil is a Part Timer is already back?? I thought it would be a while before they came out with season 3. Let's hope it is better than season 2.

Notes:

  • AI no Idenshi is social-school SF. Not something you see often in these parts
  • Atelier Ryza is being handled by the writer of the game... who also did Shakugan no Shana? Did not know that
  • Ayaka is the result of Gohands teaming up with the same crew that wrote K for them, but appears to be much more conventionally directed than is typical for the studio
  • Ayakashi Triangle and The Misfit of Demon King Academy are, of course, restarts of anime that have already premiered
  • The latest Bang Dream season maintains the staff of the last few seasons, but has new characters. Not sure if the old ones are still around
  • With Genjitsu no Yohane, the only Love Live group not currently active is the originals
  • SukiMega and DekiNeko are also Gohands productions. I'm not sure how they keep getting work. Anyway, what's really weird here is that the staff is identical in both. Not just the director or writer, literally every announced staff member, down to the character designer. I'm assuming at least one of them is a short?
  • Speaking of SukiMega, if you ever needed proof that fluffy romances are trendy, this is it. It is deeply bland, and not something I'd have expected to see get serialized a few years back, never mind animated
  • The new Horimiya anime is a collection of stories left out of the last anime, not a sequel
  • Liar Liar should not be confused with Liar x Liar, the Tumblr VN, or any Jim Carrey films, specials, TV appearances, or interviews
  • LasTame's gimmick within the villainess space is that it plays the concept entirely seriously and has no romance
  • My Happy Marriage is absolutely not happy
  • Reborn as a Vending Machine's LN incarnation was apparently axed...? Not sure why it's getting revived now
  • While Reign of the Seven Spellblades sounds like a generic magic school series, it's not, not really. It is Harry Potter (with some Nasuverse added)
    • It's from the writer of Alderamin on the Sky, if that's something you remember
  • Rurouni Kenshin is an older work from the creator of Buso Renkin
  • I'm pretty certain TenPuru was intended to be romanized as 'Temple', but ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Also it's from the artist of Grand Blue Dreaming, and fairly similar to it
  • Tsuyokute New Saga features entirely new character designs, which is... unusual, particularly for something so newnote
  • Undead Girl Murder Farce is not a farce. 'Undead' is also arguable, but, uh, mystery series, not really a comedy

I was uncertain about Reign of the Seven Spellblades when I picked up the first book, but the twist in book 2 really sold me, and the character work has been getting better ever since.

I'm a little concerned about the direction and color palette from the trailer so far, but otherwise, this is a solid to-watch for me, and I hope it lives up to the shilling I've been giving the novels.

My (so far unsubstantiated) worry is that the charm of the novels might be due to the skill of the official translators and their touches in handling the prose and character dialogue, which might be lost when dealing with, let's be honest, the rushed and cheap subs that Crunchyroll puts out. We'll have to see.

It's been fun.

[up][up] To offer a counter point, I will say that Sukinako ga Megane wo Wasureta (or The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses) is the anime I'm most excited for next season, since the manga is adorable, and the protagonist are pretty lovable, specially later on. Though, I must admit, the trailer isn't completely selling me in the art direction for the anime, so that might put a damper on it.

[up]That do be true, me agree tongue. Joke aside, the problem has more to do with the backgrounds, that at times don't feel like they share the same space as the characters, which I'm not really digging (which seems to be a studio situation, since the Masterful Cat has the same thing going on).

Gohands uses 3D backgrounds and is bad at compositing, yes

[up]Looking hem up, the only thing that I have seen from them was the first season of Seitokai Yakuindomo, and that was so long ago I didn't remember their particular style, so now I'm a little more worried for SukiMegane that I was when I woke up today tongue.

[up] You're in the wrong thread. You want the Spring thread.

Anyways, nothing on the list posted earlier interest me at the moment but depending on word of mouth that might change. I did like what I've read of Vending Machine's light novels but I don't know if that'll translate well to an animated format.

Ayaka is not made by Go Hands though. They already have 2 series next season.

Sequels

Horimiya -piece-

This is a compilation of stories the first anime didn't adapt. With the manga this is based on being 16 volumes, they could probably do two cours of this...

Jujutsu Kaisen

New Director! It's some guy

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation II

New staff, including an untested director

Rent-A-Girlfriend

Another new director, who once again has no experience in the position

Material that has been animated before

Rurouni Kenshin

A more grounded shounen fighting series. There's little overtly fantastical and it has a well-defined historical setting

...The series has somehow accrued a reputation as High Art over the years, but... it's a shounen fighting series. While it does have some depth, it's still mostly about Kenshin fighting cirus freaks

Manga-derived

AI no Idenshi

I only had the opportunity to check out the first volume, but what I read of it was essentially a series of mini-melodramas. Very episodic, and much more interested in people's feelings than anything else

Dark Gathering

Edgy horror for high-school boys. There's a lot of messed-up stuff happening here, though it's low on gore. Pretty solid, though quite episodic, at least in the chapters likely to get animated

The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses

There's two major aspects to this anime:

The first is the manga it's based on— It's the blandest, most asinine excuse for a romance I've seen yet in this wave of bland, toothless romances we're currently living in. I want to say that it has no positive qualities, but it's more like it just doesn't have qualities?

The second is the studio, GoHands. They like 3D backgrounds, colour filters, and questionable ways of using these things. This can work out with the big urban battles they typically specialize in, but can also... not work out, especially when there's a lot of characters around

Together... the anime doesn't exactly look great, but GoHands did pour a lot of atmosphere into a series that originally didn't really have any

Helck

Oh hey, I remember when this was running. It was kind of a big deal. ...It's a pity they waited this long for the anime, the whole yuusha/maou thing wasn't nearly as common when it was originally running

So, pretty solid series. Starts as a comedy, gets substantially more serious. Lot of fantasy racism

Complete at 12 volumes, so this should be a full adaptation

The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today

Another GoHands anime, with same director. And writer. And staff in general. It's weird, and I have to assume at least one of these series is a short

Uh, so the manga here is one of those "I want to have someone at home to heal me when I get off work" deals we see occasionally. This one has a bit of a self-deprecating edge, laughing at how garbage the MC's lifestyle is

Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence

Fluffy romance-comedy about some guy doting on a cute but largely useless girl. It's... fine

TenPuru

From the artist of Grand Blue, and fairly similar to it. Which is kind of weird, since they don't don't share writers. So, it's a raucous romcom, focusing on college-age characters. Not as lewd as the description likely makes you think

Uchi no Kaisha no Chiisai Sempai no Hanashi

Oh hey, it's another light romance. A bit hornier than the others, but still not especially fanservicey. Actually has a fair amount of variety in what goes on. ...Which might be a problem when adapting it to anime, since most chapters are ~4 pages, and they don't really flow into each other. May not end up being the most coherent series

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead

Zombie apocalypse but fun, with a can-do shounen attitude!

Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero

Much more of a dramedy than you'd expect. Which good, because it's not terribly good at the comedy aspect. It is about as horny as you'd expect from the promotional materials, though

Based on a light novel

Am I Actually the Strongest?

Generic isekai

The Great Cleric

Rather than the usual "I wanna be the best", this story goes for "I wanna have talents that let me work my way the top". An attitude that is... contemptible, frankly, but does make for a better story. Not really a significantly better story in this case, but a working-man perspective and glorification of grindset culture are unusual in isekai, at least

Hero Classroom

Remember those magic school series we were getting loads of back in the 10s? It's like those... except that I can't tell if it's supposed to be a parody thereof, but just not that funny, or if it's trying to be a straight example but the character writing is bizarrely exaggerated. Anyway, I don't recommend it

'Liar Liar

While the promotional material makes it look like a serious mindgame story, it's actually pretty goofy. Pretty heavy on light novel cliches

The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior

Nominally a villainess isekai, in reality more of a court drama. It plays it's premise entirely straight, without any reverse-harem shenanigans

My Happy Marriage

Borderline misery porn. There is some emphasis on the marriage as a source of strength/happiness, but most of what I saw was focused the main character's pathological inability to be happy, or other characters doing their best to reinforce this

My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1

Generic isekai

Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon

Huh, this is weird. The original source material is web novels that've been finished for a while now. It quickly got a light novel adaptation, but that never concluded. The manga version didn't start until the prose versions had been inactive for a few years, and now there's an anime. Dunno what's going on

Comedic, but not an outright parody of isekai. One of those skill puzzle series, having to use a limited skill set to get out of various unpleasant situations

Reign of the Seven Spellblades

Anime Harry Potter

So, set in a school in a charming fantasy world, but there's loads of (in-universe) racism and a lot of the characters are lunatics. I enjoyed what I read of this

Sweet Reincarnation

One of those isekai where the MC is born into high society (and stays there). There's nominally a pastry theme, but it's really not that important

Undead Girl Murder Farce

Fairly similar to most other gothic series in the otaku space: Kinda campy, bouncing between goofy comedy and chuunibyou drama. But this one's a mystery! Series. It is a series of mysteries

Yumemiru Danshi wa Genjitsushugisha

Fairly traditional LN romcom— Mostly comedy, bit of drama. Not much lewd. And it's a harem, of course

Game adaptation(s)

Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout

Not really sure what to expect here. Partially because I'm just not familiar with the gamenote , but also because it's apparently quite short and they're going to need to make up a lot of stuff to fill a full cour. It's written by the creator of Shakugan no Shana, which might be a good sign?

Franchise stuff

Ban G Dream! It's My Go!!!!!

Same staff, new main characters. Beyond that, who knows

Genjitsu no Yohane -Sunshine in the Mirror-

A spinoff of the best Love Live that features zero returning staff members. The director is not... completely... inexperienced in the position, but can't really be judged ahead of time. The writer has done a number of original series before, and largely works on oddball stuff like Gatchaman Crowds or Tsuritama. This might end up weird

Synduality: Noir

Game spinoff. What's odd here is that the staff has mostly worked on comedies previously?

Anime originals

Ayaka: A Story of Bonds and Wounds

Written by GoRA, the people that wrote K. Except maybe not, because GoRA is a writer's collective and there's no way of knowing who did what. Director's previous go at an original series was Love Flops. ...I have some concerns here

General

  • There's more manga adaptions than LN, but way more of the manga-derived works are sequels
  • One series announced between starting the thread and posting this. I think that's a new low?
