Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Yeah, don't think he fits this either. [tdown] for Genshin.

Got an Ace Attorney (fan work) candidate of my own to discuss. My candidate is from Turnabout Revivals, a fan case set between the events of Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies. It follows Phoenix Wright as he tries to acquit Valant Gramarye for the murder of fellow magician Roger Finn, while also following Apollo Justice while he's on a ship called the Pequod, on vacation to a place called the Island of the Dead King.

A few times in the case, a shadowy, mysterious man who owns both the Pequod and the island called The Fortune Teller shows up. He is my candidate today.

     The Fortune Teller
Who is The Fortune Teller? What has he done?

The Fortune Teller is an enigmatic, rich man in a black coat and hat who owns the ship that Apollo is on at the start of the case, the Pequod. Basically everything about him is a mystery, from his name to where he gets all his money.

In truth however, the Fortune Teller is none other than Zak Gramarye.

Approaching Phoenix a month before the events of his "death", Zak proposes to Phoenix an deal where they will work together to take down Kristoph Gavin, the man responsible for Phoenix's disbarment. In order to do this, he has Phoenix pay off the mortician so that he will leave a corpse alone as well as give Phoenix access to the morgue, while also having him say things to Kristoph during their dinner that would help ensure his conviction.

On the night of what would be his murder, Zak takes a drug called Inlestrigin if overdosed, causes the heart rate of the one who took it to slow down. Using this, he faked his own death and had Phoenix retrieve his body from the morgue. With all of this put together, they were successfully able to frame Kristoph for his "murder", and Zak was free to vanish into the night.

Zak remained in hiding for a year, until he heard of something happening in involving the Gramarye name. Roger Finn, a former prop assistant who had worked with Troupe Gramarye, had been taking their tricks and passing them off as his own, even intending to take Valant Gramarye to court with the rights to them. Zak wouldn't let the chance that the Gramarye name would be potentially sullied stand, however, and devised a plot to murder him and his twin brother, who was a part of his act as how he was able to perform a famous trick of his.

When Roger and his brother got onto the Pequod in order to perform a magic show, Zak set his plan into motion. He drugged all the passengers of the ship and piloted the ship around the island to make the passengers believe they were moving around, before flying them near Los Angeles and putting them on a second Pequod. Obtaining the assistance of Valant, he has him drive him and one of the Finns to a parking lot where he shoots the Finn dead, leaving his corpse in the car. Realizing however that the Finn had the bottle of Inlestrigin and had figured out the secret behind his "death", he has Valant go back to obtain it, but forgets to give him the car keys, leading to Valant's arrest.

Undeterred by this, he quickly called Phoenix and asked him to defend Valant to make sure he didn't go to jail for his crime. Phoenix accepts and is able to arrange things so that he's able to defend Valant even while not being a lawyer. Zak, meanwhile, continues his plan. He steals the body of the dead Finn from the morgue and disposed of it, before returning to the second Pequod and executing the second Finn brother. The missing body and second dead Roger Finn at a different time than the first confuses everyone in the case massively, and no one is able to fully understand what's happening.

Later on, Zak calls Phoenix and the two meet up in the courtroom where Phoenix's final trial took place. Though he lacks the decisive evidence to actually prove that Zak killed the Finns, he managed to piece together a theory as to how Zak pulled off his scheme. Zak, having spent the entire case in the guise of The Fortune Teller sheds the disguise and has a brief chat with Phoenix about everything that happened. One thing discussed is how he's left Phoenix between a rock and a hard place where either:

  • He (somehow) gets Zak arrested, which would be hard to do given that Zak is legally dead and the lack of evidence, which would end up sending Wright back to square one on being a lawyer and Kristoph would be let free as he never killed Zak;
  • Or he just lets Zak go free, accepting that he can't catch him.

Phoenix decides to let Zak go free, but not before revealing to him that Apollo, Trucy and Thalassa were in the courtroom watching the whole time, and that they know everything they did. Zak is briefly shocked, but simply laughs before vanishing into the night forever.

Is he magnificent?

Yeah, I'd say so. The schemes he pulls off are brilliant; he manages to fake his death without a hitch and his murder plot on the Finns is so convoluted that everyone is completely baffled because of all the seemingly contradictory facts. He leaves so little evidence tying his crimes to him that he manages to get away completely with his crimes, even if he'll have to spend the rest of his days alone.

Now canon Zak can be a bit of a jackass, but I don't think that's a huge problem here. The whole "I'm going to expose you as a cheater in poker even though you're taking care of my daughter" thing from canon is mitigated by the fact that part of the reason he comes up with the scheme is to help Phoenix get reinstated as a lawyer so he can better take care of his daughter. And though he got Valant to be his accomplice in getting one of the Finns to L.A to be killed, he didn't want him to be a fall guy, even insisting as such when Phoenix says that he would've used him as one if things were more dire, even after Valant betrayed him many years ago.

And while Phoenix catches him off guard by revealing their sins to their loved ones, I don't think it hurts him too badly. He still gets away with everything he did and after a brief moment of silence he just laughs, and not in a way that I'd say is broken in any way. He's fine on this front in my eyes.

Is he a bastard?

Definitely. While Kristoph is absolutely a victim worth little sympathy, Zak still worked to frame for a crime he didn't commit even if his intentions were to help his daughter. And while the Finn brothers were plagiarist assholes intending to take Valant to court, murdering them was absolutely not justified. Add on things like stealing a body from the morgue and drugging everyone on the Pequod to move them to an identical ship and yeah, not the nicest dude.

That said, all his actions were done with a purpose; the framing of Kristoph to get a bad man in jail and get his daughter's caretaker a better job, the murder of the Finn brothers as a way to protect the Gramarye name. And even with all his deeds, he still cares for Trucy and Valant, even with everything the latter did out of jealousy towards him. I'd day he hits a nice balance.

Verdict? Keeper, I think.

And here's my first What If?? candidate, from the episode What If…? S2E1 "What If… Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?"... said character's our candidate.

Who is Nebula and what has she done?

A "daughter" of Thanos, Nebula's story mirrors her main counterpart up until the What If? moment of Ronan betraying Thanos, killing him and Gamora and leaving Nebula stranded in space until she was discovered by the Nova Corps. Joining them, Nebula served them loyally — even continuing after Nova Prime sealed Xandar under a unbreakable shield when Ronan attacked.

Discovering Yondu had been murdered, Nebula is first on the scene although is told to leave by Saal and his cronies so they can cover it and that it was just a criminal getting their just deserts. When they leave, Nebula returns to the scene and uses her memories of her interactions with Yondu to recall the whistle he uses to summon his arrow — using the memory's whistle to call the arrow to her.

Discovering that the arrow contained schematics for some unknown purpose, Nebula has them ran through the Nova Corps database — with no results cropping up. Nova Prime contacts Nebula and has her shifted to a private call to explain that there may be a plot to open the shield protecting Xandar from Ronan.

Heading to Howard The Duck's casino, Nebula asks him about the meaning of the schematics since he has a hand in Xandar criminal world. Korg however points out that it's a data core schematic. Realising that someone is trying to initiate an invasion for Ronan, Nebula concludes that she need to go to the mainframe herself but would need help since the security is fatally protective there. To help her with this, Nebula intends on releasing Yon Rogg to help her since he had almost infiltrated highly protected mainframes before (she'd know since she was the one who bagged him.)

Releasing Yon from his cell, she and him make an escape from the correctional facility when they find themselves surrounded by guards who are pointing their guns at them. To help them escape, Nebula uses the tablet she had robbed off a correction bot to release the prisoners — causing a mass riot to happen and switching off the lights to allow a getaway. The pair arrive at an entrance to the mainframe and sneak through the vent to quickly descend downwards. When they reach the core, Nebula connects it to her mind and goes to reset the system to stop the breach from happening when Yon betrays her and downloads the code from her mind.

After Nebula escapes, she discovers that Nova Prime was the one behind the scheme to open the shields to allow Ronan to invade and that she set up Nebula on the mission to be able to download the mainframe's data. When Prime leaves Saal to brutalise and kill Nebula, Nebula manages to fight her attackers and make an escape. Survivng the fall, Nebula heads to Howard's in which she asks for their help and weapons to stop Prime from kicking off the invasion.

When they arrive to stop Prime, Nebula effortlessly uses Yondu's arrow to wipe out the guarding corps members to allow them to push through. When Nebula and co reach Prime, it's revealed that Nebula had altered the data code to provide a Hope Spot for Ronan as she has the shields close onto his ship — causing his death. Nebula mentions how she had clocked onto some of the wording that Prime had said during the private call, making her realise that she was the traitor.

When Prime makes a run for it, Nebula gives chase — ending up with the two of them on the edge of a tall building. When Nebula offers Prime safety, Prime just goes to shoot her, resulting with her falling to her demise. With Ronan dead and the shields open, allowing Xandar to return to normalcy, Nebula returns to serving the Nova Corps.

Is Nebula magnificent?

Yeah easily, read the EP lmao and unlike her main counterpart, there's no tragic unhinged interior to negate her personality with her being a calm no-nonsense planner. Although she does almost die from Saal, Nebula still would've had a major posthumous victory as she had the data rigged to close the shields onto Ronan as he entered.

Is she a bastard?

It's tough but I think she makes it, Nebula is mentioned to have been serving Thanos so there's that but I think her major thing that pushes her out of Guile Hero is when she unleashes every prisoner of the correction facility onto the guards to she can make her escape. Those guards weren't mentioned to have been in on the scheme or anything so it's enough to push her through the bastard line?

Final Verdict?

Your call folks.

Oh, Mr. Kennedy, you entertain me. To show my appreciation, I will help you awaken from your world of clichés.

[tdown] To Genshin. He's not a bastard. The game portrays him as a heroic figure who was unfairly painted as a monster by the British public. However you personally feel about it, his killing of Klint in a duel is spoken in-game as him giving Klint an honorable death rather than forcing him to turn himself in and disgrace his entire family.

Is there a reason why he was just added to the game's YMMV page under Magnificent Bastard when from the look of things people are agreeing he doesn't count?

Sooooooooo it turns out that I submitted these characters... four months ago, and then just never got around to adding them? Well, here it is:

  • Destinies of Remnant:
    • "Fallen Petals":
      • Neopolitan begins as Roman's right-hand woman and continues working for Ruby after his death. Becoming her most trusted advisor before her planned takeover of Mistral, Neo's creative use of her Semblance and incredible combat ability are crucial to Ruby's success. First tricking Adam Taurus into leading them to the White Fang's hideout, then saving Ruby's life when she's tricked into meeting with Cinder, Neo later tracks down Yang Xiao Long upon her arrival and fights her way through Junior's gang to bring her a letter. When Yang tries to flee, Neo ruthlessly tracks her through the city, even briefly putting civilians in danger to put her in a vulnerable position, and wins a three-way fight between herself, Yang, and Adam to reclaim Yang for Ruby. As part of Ruby's endgame, Neo uses an illusion of Ruby to lure Cinder to Haven Academy and fights her to the death, winning the battle by using gravity Dust in her weapon to implode the Academy and reuniting with Roman in the afterlife.
      • Sienna Khan is the leader of the White Fang and, after forming an alliance with Ruby, seeks to secure her control over the organization from the Albain brothers and Adam. After covering up the violent results of Adam's latest mission and disguising it as a Dust accident, Sienna learns from an informant that Adam is plotting against her. To begin removing her enemies, Sienna first sends the Albains to track down Blake Belladonna to remove them as threats, then recruits several of Adam's supposed loyalists for her own ends. During the final battle between Ruby and Cinder, Sienna preempts Adam's betrayal with her own, forcing him into a complete and ultimately fatal retreat. After surviving the battle by using the environment to her advantage, Sienna leads the cleanup efforts, then joins Ruby's alliance to control Mistral and create a better world.

I'm gonna stack these in the drafts like this for now, but at some point over the next week I'll draft a page for the fic cause we're at enough examples for one.

With the Scissor Seven examples there will be 7 Asian animation examples.

Should we put them in a folder by now? They’re already covering quite a bit of space in the Other Media page.

(I'm not saying to give them already a page, I’m saying to put them in a folder like all the other media examples outside of advertising and roleplay).
