Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Here's what I got as a first draft:

Cosmos is the Manikin copy of Cid of The Lufaine's wife turned Goddess of Harmony. Originally created to help control Chaos, she was apart of the group that made a pact with Shinryu when they arrived in World B and gained the ability to summon warriors from various world in order to wage war with Chaos in order to turn him into the ultimate weapon for Cid's revenge. After a dozen cycles, Cosmos realized the nightmare she helped create and works behind the scenes to help put an end to it; she creates crystals secretly embuded with her power for her chosen warriors to obtain and preforms an non-fatal Heroic Sacrifice to save the Warrior of Light from an army of Manikins. Reminded of her plan when brought back in the cycle and still as resolved as ever even knowing her impending death, Cosmos acts as a guiding force to her remaining warriors so they are each able to obtain their crystals, while being able to use the forces of discord for her own ends so they are able to greatly speed up the process despite them trying to exploit her plan to cause her death. Despite Cosmos her death at the hands of Chaos, her champions are able to survive without her needing presence due to the crystals and are able to strike down the warriors of Chaos and the god himself once and for all. Bidding Cid goodbye after being revived, Cosmos is content to return to the Void with World B, knowing her chosen are safe and returned to the worlds they belong to.

Alright, the one you all have been waiting for after some time re-checking. So let's talk about it while we are at it, shall we? Spoilers for Star Wars Jedi: Survivors also.

What's The Work?

Star Wars Jedi: Survivors is the recent Star Wars game that is a sequel to Fallen Order taking five years after the story as it follows Cal fighting from the empire while the Galaxy descends in the darkness as it goes on.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Rayvis is a Gen'Dai warrior who was pretty much a Jedi hunter killing them. He earned his loyalty to Gera when beaten until he was betrayed. When Gera was placed in a tank, he searched for him while also killing multiple Jedi who was stopping his plan before he was stopped by the Jedi masters leading him to be imprisoned for many years. This caused him to have hatred for them due to not sparing him and being dishonorable. Sometime later he escaped searching for his master Gera until Cal finds him and then recruited his master.

Rayvis was seen attacking Turgle for giving him the wrong relic he was searching for despite not being aware of it before ordering his men to kill Turgle even though he said he believed him. He even had his men attack Cal seeing that he's a Jedi. He catches Cal and grabs the key before Cal escapes when he tries to kill him. He is not seen again until he was ordered by Gera to raid the shattered moon with Rayvis telling him once he has the compass he will consider his oath fulfilled. After Cal finds him he challenged him to a dual for the compass. After being defeated he yields to Kestis telling him where the compass is after proving himself. When Kestis says to join in fighting Dagan he denies it and tells him to give him a warrior's death before accepting his demise.

Is He Magnificent?

I say he does fit the bill. Unlike the other antagonists, Rayvis is proven to not only be a tough foe to defeat but also shown to be an honorable person when fighting with his enemies. He is also shown to have geniuine loyalty towards Gera as he admits after being defeated by him he gained respect towards Gera. He even went far as to find him despite the circumstances given to him and succeeded only due to Cal not being aware Gera is evil. Unlike Bora and Gera Rayvis doesn't suffer from a very bad meltdown before their demise despite being great villains in their respected rights. He only attacked due to not having a true warrior's death and straight-up accepts his demise after it.

Is He Too Much of a Baddie?

He has his droids kill a man so he could test them and pretty much assisted in Gera's actions to find the compass on the shattered moon and attempts to kill Turgle for giving him a fake compass. I don't believe his actions are too much since his redeeming qualities pretty much not just backed up his magnificence but also the fact he is always shown to be very honorable even when faced with combat. I think it also helps the fact his actions are mostly in Gera's orders proving his loyalty towards his master is very genuine. Overall, while bad enough it's not too much to detract from his redeeming features especially if you compare him to Gera and Bolo who suffers the problems to qualify here. Rayvis is a complete saint compared to these two and other villains in the game if anything.

Final Verdict

Your choice as always

Yes to Rayvis.

Work

The End of the World is a The Hunger Games prequel and Perspective Flip series mainly focusing on Haymitch and the ups and downs of his life as he goes from mentor in an Involuntary Battle to the Death contest that he won to a rebel playing long games and having UST with Capitol worker Effie Trinket, while struggling with feelings of attachment to people in his life who keep dying. Loss, alcoholism, and bonds of friendship are major themes of the series. The character below, appears in two installments of the Doorstopper series, These are the Names (as a tribute and then a younger mentor), and The Golden Mean (a retelling of book 2, where he mentors for the victors games).

Character

Harris Greaves is a District 4 tribute who wins the 59th Hunger Games. A Capitol worker is murdered in District 4 right before the Games start, so his mother is taken as a hostage and he is targeted for muttation attacks in the arena. Harris scores an eleven in training and is a cold killer in the Games, including drowning the boy from 12 without emotion, saying he is determined to get home, especially for his mother’s sake. He leads his alliance through their swamp arena, hunting and killing other tributes and being constantly attacked by mutts, but wins, and later makes a brief unprompted and offstage apology for killing the District 12 boy on his stop there during the victory tour.

During the 65th Hunger Games, he knows or suspects that his tribute (District 4’s girl) plans to kill her district partner Finnick due to jealousy about his privileged status as a family friend of Mags before the Games and how he gets disproportionate media attention because of his handsomeness.

He drops out of sight until the 3rd Quarter Quell victors game and makes no move to volunteer for Finnick. He is the only District 4 victor to mentor, though, while the others stay home to work on the Rebellion. He reluctantly agrees with another rebel who asks if they should ignore Peeta to focus on saving Katniss but doesn’t mind when they disagree.

He shows concern about the initial tension between Finnick and Katniss and how their alliance might end due to a Trigger-Happy moment from the Locked Out of the Loop about the escape plot Katniss, indicating he has come to view Finick as a friend. He also whispers in a sad, affected way for someone to please shut up the announcer as he gloats about how never gas is endangering an alliance between the rebels in the arena.

He helps arrange covert supply messages and trades jokes with the other mentors in his alliance during interviews for the camera while also remaining composed when the interviewer tries to bait him with comments about his mother.

When soldiers try to arrest everyone involved in the plot, Harris fights back barehanded and holds his own for a while. As the peacekeepers start shooting people, he joins a retreat and yells they need to get to the rendezvouses point but then is shot and falls to the ground, "grasping at his neck", and isn't mentioned later on during a report about the few mentors who got out of the building alive.

Magnificent

He is an expert in swamp survival skills, killing predators, and knowing how to move through wet and muddy terrain without drowning. When his allies contemplate turning on him he makes a speech about how there are other tributes who grew up near swamps, and they need him to have an advantage over those kids. He makes it through the entire Games without a single injury despite daring to yell angry comments at the Capitol at one point and being attacked specifically by enemies ranging from carnivorous birds to alligators, to a wolf pack, to two of his own allies at once after they finally turn on him.

A live journal tie-in story lost when the author deleted their account mentions that Harris was nearly homicidal with rage and newfound Rebel sentiment when the Capitol started pimping Finnick out when he was about sixteen and also kill Finnick’s father and frame his mother for the crime.

He is knowledgeable about complicated military plans going on in District 4 and thanks Haymitch for sending them a tactician refugee from District 11 who has been helpful. Right before his final battle, as everyone else gets whatever they can as a weapon, Harris just takes off his jacket and flexes his muscles before charging in.

Bastard

Pre-Character Development, he is a ruthless killer in the arena and bosses his allies around in the Games. He doesn’t interfere much when his tribute starts planning to betray and kill her 14-year-old district partner and is a bit insensitive about how Beetee from District 3 has already lost his tribute when he tells them to be quiet so he can concentrate.

He is a bit pragmatic even while being a friend and ally of Haymitch in the arena plot.

Verdict

Both in and out of the arena, he is brave, ruthless at times (although he doesn't really want to be), and quiet but calculating.

Competition

Maybe Plutarch Heavensbee The Mole for the heroes, but most of the other victors are either not bad enough for the trope or lacking in onscreen magnificence.

'Tis the hour of the writeup.

  • League of Legends:
    • "The Principles of Strength": Alyssa val-Lokan is the sole female heir to the Delverhold, which supplies Ironspike ore to Noxus. After meeting with the Trifarix at the head of Noxus to renegotiate terms for her arrogant and unloving father, Alyssa sees right through the scheme of the Faceless and quickly spins it into her own plan, foiling her brother's poorly-planned attempt to blackmail the Trifarix and killing him, then managing to effortlessly convince the Trifarix to back her own leadership of the Delverhold. Walking right into her father's throne room, she turns his own guards against him effortlessly and takes control of the Delverhold, having impressed Noxus' very best planners with her brilliant display of vision, might, and guile.
    • Legends of Runeterra: Corina Veraza, Mastermind, is one of Zaun's most brilliant chembarons. Responsible for the disappearance of Caitlyn Kiramman's parents as part of her plan to lure Caitlyn to her, having her eliminate her rivals along the way, Corina has ambitions to reshape Zaun and, as part of these ambitions, tricks a squad of Piltover's wardens into her trap and activates it to eliminate her pursuers in a single masterstroke.

They should probably go in "Main Continuity - Others" like on the Monster page.

The EP is a little light on the scheming, but from cutscenes I've seen Rayvis is a yes. He silently follows Cal to Dagan's prison to provide his old master an easy escape once he's freed, and preemptively makes copies of some key thing so they can easily unlock the barriers in their way to Tanalorr. I think yes to the Hunger Games fic guy.

Have a Star Wars of my own I decided to knock out.

From Solo and the recent comic trilogy of War of the Bounty Hunters, Crimson Reign, and Hidden Empire:

Who is Qi'ra?

Once a scrappy orphan street rat alongside Han Solo, the two sought to escape the control of the criminal White Worms syndicate and finally leave their homeworld of Corellia. However, while fleeing, Qi'ra was captured and Han fled into the Imperial military. Qi'ra eventually came into the service of the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn, and climbed the ranks until she became the right hand of its Puppet King, Dryden Vos.

Several years later, Qi'ra and Han reunite when the latter, after botching a job for Vos, offers to pay his debt by stealing from the Pyle syndicate. Qi'ra is sent along to oversee Han (with the expectation she will be executed if she fails), and the two decide to backstab Vos. Their plan goes a little sideways, but Qi'ra successfully catches her boss off guard and kills him in a duel, before sending Han to rescue Chewie.

...And she immediately betrays him, contacting Vos' boss, Maul, and giving him a highly edited version of events that sees her a hapless survivor of the massacred Crimson Dawn. It's ambiguous if Maul believes her, but he nonetheless decides to promote her for her audacity and begins training her.

Under Maul's tutelage, Qi'ra learns ancient secrets of the Sith—not all of them, but enough that she learns the truth of the Emperor's identity... and enough that she knows how to topple him. For she has been a servant all her life, and she wants nothing more than to break that which would control her. After Maul's death, Qi'ra takes to the shadows to quietly rebuild Crimson Dawn, before making a grand re-entrance to the galactic stage by stealing the carbonite-frozen Han from Boba Fett. Hosting a massive auction for Han between all the galactic underworld players, Qi'ra allows the Hutts to successfully bid for him... right as Vader barges in and takes Han. She briefly duels Vader but ultimately lets him escape with his prize. As was the plan.

Several of Jabba's family members aren't exactly happy about him rolling over and letting the Empire take what's rightfully theirs, and Qi'ra inflames these tensions using her followers within the Hutt council. The Hutts (minus Jabba) launch an attack on the Empire's ships, causing Vader to retaliate by massacring the council. Meanwhile, she has her agents in the Empire attempt to help Leia, Lando, and Chewie steal Han back in the midst of the chaos, though Boba's interference causes them to lose him.

With the Hutts weakened, as Jabba is their only remaining leader, the balance of power in the underworld is unstable. Qi'ra meets with several major players—the Pykes, Black Sun, etc.—and spreads rumors that the Emperor is dissatisfied with the Hutts' recent antics, and wishes to replace them as the Empire's primary collaborator in criminal matters. After informing Leia that Han is still alive and currently in the possession of Jabba, she also has her forces begin staging False Flag Operations against the underworld players; this combined with the rumors of the Empire seeking to find new criminal partners sparks a massive intergalactic gang war, each faction trying to assert their dominance and prove they are worthy of replacing the Hutts.

As this is all going on, Qi'ra assembles several small-time players (including the Knights of Ren, not yet affiliated with Palpatine at this point in history) and reveals the truth of the Emperor being a Sith. She sets them to work sowing more chaos throughout the galaxy—up to assassinating the entire Imperial Royal Guard—as Palpatine slowly figures out who is behind all these sudden problems. He, of course, immediately sets out to kill her, but Qi'ra contacts him and reveals she has a card up her sleeve: A Fermata Cage, an ancient device that can be used to trap an individual in time. And her Cage? Supposedly contains an ancient Sith lord. One powerful enough to easily overthrow Palpatine. As he has his Imperials fire on her flagship, Qi'ra screams that it doesn't matter if he kills her; she's already set into motion the events that will destroy him, and her followers will see her vision through to the end.

Qi'ra, of course, isn't even on her flagship when it's subsequently destroyed. Faking her death, she begins constructing a massive fleet for her final battle with the Empire. Palps, of course, begins cracking down extra hard, as her legions of collaborators and spies throughout the galaxy are steadily hunted down and massacred, but Qi'ra manages to scrape together enough of what she needs to lay a trap. Luring in Palpatine and Vader by finally beginning the operation to open the Fermata Cage, Qi'ra ambushes their forces with her fleet, while bribing whatever surviving associates she has to stall the Sith. The Sith, of course, butcher their way through her forces to the Fermata Cage as it opens...

To find nothing. The entire thing was a massive bluff by Qi'ra, who instead freezes the Sith in time with the intent to suck them into the Cage and throw the device into a star, dooming them forever. Unfortunately, the Knights of Ren, tired of being pawns, suddenly swoop in and destroy the device before it can capture the Dark Lords. Qi'ra briefly freaks before composing herself, sending a message to her fleet telling them to flee before retreating herself. Knowing she has no choice but to hide now, she gives all her resources to a young mafia princess she's kidnapped/mentored throughout this mess, hoping she'll be able to find her own freedom.

The years pass by; Qi'ra fakes her death again so the Empire doesn't come looking for her, even surviving to Palpatine's death. She's too lonely to celebrate, thinking nothing she did mattered... but it did. As Luke and Leia finally uncover the full extent of her machinations, they remark that the Empire's ultimate fall couldn't have occurred without her: the chaos she caused allowed the Rebellion to rebuild in the wake of the disastrous Battle of Hoth, and it was her Crimson Dawn agents that discovered the existence of the second Death Star. Qi'ra may never know it, and it may not have been as direct as she had hoped, but she won.

She felled the Empire.

Mitigating factors?

Qi'ra is an underdog. Even at her most powerful, she is constantly forced to adapt her schemes for new complications, constantly projecting bravado to her subordinates when faced with disastrous setbacks, constantly under threat from the Emperor breathing down her neck and annihilating her pieces as soon as she puts them on the board.

In that position she plays Palpatine for a complete and utter dunce. If it weren't for the Knights being petty morons, she would have easily killed both him and Vader, having tricked and goaded them the entire way to their complete and utter downfall. Everyone in the galaxy dances to her tune throughout her reign at the top of Crimson Dawn, and even after it all comes crumbling down she's able to effortlessly escape, while doing what she can to ensure those that come after her can find the freedom she always sought.

Her final scene is melancholic as she sits alone while everyone around her parties, but the story goes out of its way to give her the credit she's due: while all her planning was undone by a sheer stroke of luck, Palpatine nonetheless never would have fallen if it weren't for her efforts.

Verdict?

Easy yes.

Leaning ever so slightly [tup] Dodger. I think being a thief with an established pattern is just bad enough.

You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the mid

I'm still ambivalent on Dodger, but gonna lean [tdown]—though only slightly. More would've been helpful. Didn't even have to be that much more either.

Back when I was near the end of third grade in 2001, the kids on the bus would be annoyed to no end with me constantly singing "Why Should I Worry?".tongue

future I really can't see us being encouraged to recreate the content of sandboxes that had to be cut in our posts...

I do it in private from time to time in PMs, but I don't publicly share though. I'll strike it if it sets a bad precedent to bring it up again.

Frankly, while it's still fun to speculate on occasion, it's a relief to not have to keep track all the time anymore.

Sorry about that. Carry on.
