Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Alright here's my last next to discuss and since this is only the 2nd work I have posted with the 72 hours I have not broke any rules from the game Killzone: Shadowfall

What's the Work?

Killzone: Shadow Fall is an FPS and the 4th main installment of the Killzone series. This installment takes place 30 years after Killzone 3, with the story following Lucas Kellan, a Vektan Security Agency (VSA for short) Shadow Marshal, whose trying to maint the peace between the Vektans and Helghast, usually handling the situations regarding the two factions while defending his people from any threats the Helghast may pose, including terrorist attacks caused by the New Helghan terrorist organization Black Hand and Jorhan Stahl, the Big Bad of the previous game whose causing trouble once. However there’s also another villain reveals himself in the end and his name is Thomas Sinclair.

Who is He? What He Has Done?

Thomas Sinclair is the other member of the Big Bad Ensemble, who was a VSA Shadow Marshal who met Kellan in New Helghan when Lucas was a child, where Sinclair would take him in after Kellan’s father was killed by Helghast soldiers. Sinclair would train Lucas into becoming a Shadow Marshal and raising him to hate the Helgast like Sinclair does before allowing Kellan to succeed him.

Lucas would infiltrate New Helgan to find intel about an ISA biotech weapon experiment led by Dr. Hillary Massar and would then have Lucas infiltrate the ship, ISC Cassandra, retrieve the bioweapon and Massar, where Lucas would learn that Massar, has defected to the Helghast upon learning that Sinclair and the ISA would kill Massar once she had finished making the bioweapon for them.

Sinclair would later Lucas again to assassinate Tyran, leader of the Black Hand, the terrorist group that attacked the VSA headquarter. However Lucas would fail to kill Tyran and would distrust Lucas upon learning about his relationship with Maya Visari, aka Echo, aka Hera Visari's daughter, and wanting to stop the provocation of war between New Helghan and Vekta.

Sinclair would then send Lucas to Helghan in a mission to retrieve Massar and her bioweapon, so that he could have it altered for it to kill off anyone with even the smallest amount of Helghast DNA and would brand Lucas as a traitor when Lucas sided with Echo and let her kill Massar, thus becoming an enemy to him.

Sinclair would then send an armada of ISA war fleets in Helghan to target Stahl's base within the ruined planet, where Stahl would activate the bioweapon that Massar created, and fire it onto the ISA fleet. Lucas tried to warn Sinclair about the weapon, only to ignore it and let the weapon kill off everyone in the armada, while finds a way survive the anti-aerial attack, infiltrate Stahl’s base and kill Stahl.

Sinclair shoot Lucas before retrieving the weapon where he reveals his his true intentions to use Stahl's weapon to eradicate ever single Helghast, and restart the Helghast-Vektan war which would result in massive life loss on both ends, before killing Lucas and would rally his people to declare war against the Helghast in Vekta. Luckily, Sinclair was assassinated by Echo, before any of his plans came to fruition.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

Okay so Sinclair worked for the ISA and wants to kill off the Helgast (aka the bad guy) may seem well-intentioned on paper but as the story progresses, it’s revealed that there are many innocent people, women and children included who are just like the Vektan’s and not evil at all.

Sinclair knows that but doesn’t care at all and just wants to have an entire race killed simply because he’s a xenophobic prick who thinks that the Helgast are less than dirt (even executing one of them in cold-blood after Lucas’s father knocked him out), willing to use a horrific bioweapon to achieve his goals, ultimately making him just as bad as Helghast’s worse people.

The one potential redeeming quality Sinclair might have had is his relationship with Lucas Kellan who raised him after Kellan lost his father. However, that “redeeming quality” goes away when Lucas’s starts showing sympathy to innocent Helghasts and Sinclair would view Lucas as an enemy, even killing Lucas with no hesitation or remorse "The Destroyer” only mockingly apologizing to Lucas that he tried his best to raise Lucas into hating Helgasts like he does (basically viewing and molding Lucas into becoming a tool use against the Helgast rather than a surrogate son)

In the end Sinclair is nothing more than a Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist/ racist warmongering hypocrite, who was willing to kill anyone even his own men, such as Lucas, while planning to use Stahl's weapon to wipe out the Helghast in Vekta (which would kill off millions of innocents and even Vektan’s if they have some Helgast DNA), while planning to restart a war against the Helghst, even if this leasts to countless lives loss on the Vektan’s side, removing any possible “well-intentioned” and “redeeming” qualities all for his goals to commit genocide against the Helgast.

Heinousness

While the heinous standard may be considered high since we have 5 approved monsters total, 3 of which appear in Shadow Fall, I think Sinclair can pass it with what he has to work with given that he not the leader of the whole Vektan people, but rather a director of a recently established security agency, it’s implied that he became director by blackmailing people.

He attempts to use Stahl's weapon, as means to reignite the Helghast-Vektan war and exterminate all Helghasts permanently, which would amount to massive casualties on both sides, and proves to be a horrible Bad Boss as he shows no hesitation in sacrificing an entire Vektan armada to Stahl’s weapon as a diversion for him to infiltrate Stahl’s base to kill him and then kill Lucas, showing that he only regards Vektan lives as fodder and sacrifices to use against his enemies.

It is worth noting that Sinclair is one of the only two villains in the whole series to successfully kill The Hero and (the other being Mael Radec) and unlike Radec, Sinclair raised Lucas Kellan his who life only to kill him in cold-blood and without remorse just because he wanted to end to the years-long conflict between both sides, while Sinclair wanted to start another bloody war conflict this makes Sinclair very heinous on a personal level.

Final Verdict?

I will leave it to you guys.

Okay, here we go.

What is the work?

The clone Wars comic series from which Unger comes from. First six issues were “slaves of the republic” arc, which was eventually adapted on TV but with number of differences (ventess is there with Dooku while in show she has deserte season prior, zygerrians are mix betwen space orcs and space elves instead of Cat People).

Story is mostly same. Separatists invade Torguta colony on planet Kiros, Anakin, Ashoka, And Obi Wan, go on the planet to discover that population (numbering in around 50000) has been sent to zygerria, planet infamous for slavery.

Long story short they are captured, obi wan is sent to correction facility on planet Kadavo, where Torguta are. And keeper is piece of work.

Who is Keeper and what has he done?

Keeper (never called anything other in this version) is guy in charge of slave camp on Planet Kadavo. After Obi Wan and captain Rex are sent to him, he has Oby Wan witness him droping few slaves down (in this version Prison is over river of lava rather than bootomles pit) making it clear to Obi that if he rebels it would not be him to suffer.

Situation is pretty much like in episode. Obi Wan and slaves are mistreated, if Obe Wan tries to help slaves overserrs torture them. Count Dooku comes to planet and unimpresed by Queen’s plan to enslave the Jedi has her killed. Anakin and ashoka come to Kavado to free the slaves and there we come to difference.

Having Obi Wan and Rex brought before him to question them after Obi conviced slaves to just be obedient and wait for rescue, Keeper has sent request for premision to kill Obi Wan to the queen. Anakin, Ashoka and clone tropers arive, Keeper threatens to drop all slaves unless they surrender. Unlike in episode separatist army arives and starts blasting Prison in order to frame the republic for death of people of Kiros. Keeper, shocked at the betrayal decides to just kill all the slaves in hope that it would save his life, but Obi wan stops him. Republic and Jedi win, Torguta are saved and keeper is taken into a custodi.

Mitigatig Factors?

Nothing reddeming just Faux Affably Evil slave Owner and Dirty Coward.

Now there is infamous continuity snarl. To wit comic was writen when show was still in first season, George Lucas who infamosly didn’t consider anything in Legends canon (thougt he did find stuff he liked and has brought into a show, alought notably changed), with clone Wars particularly infamous for making changes with Legends fans, then Disney bought Franchise and officialy declareted anything except first six movies and 3D clone Wars show non canon.

So I am not sure how to do this. On one hand clone Wars series was unnoficialy in a Legends continuity, alought higher on the canon tier list, before disney bought Franchise, but after it show remained canon while comic stayed Legends. Given how confusing this I think we could just take this as a Legend version of arguss and treat him separately from the show version.

Heinousness?

No problem. Next arc does have Unger who enslaved and brings nasty damage to his planet and its people, but he is warlord with an army while keeper is just in charge of one slave camp.

Now Legends has high standard. But this guy has 50000 people as his slaves, this arc really shows why Slavery Is Special Kind Of Evil and tries to kill them all to save his hide. Plus it is made clear that Torguta are far from first slaves to be sent to his camp, with it being pretty regula for slaves to be broken and kept while awaiting sale. Zygerrians as a species are nasty but this guy is from we see one in charge of breaking most of their slaves.

Conclusion?

Lean yes, though I understand if continuity issues may be to messy for someone. Just glad to finaly get him out.

[tup] to Keeper. This guy actually sounds worse than his "successor" Agruss.

Frankly, even without the new rule which allows making separate entries for characters from different versions of a story even if the characters are identical, this guy sounds like a different character in his own right, so you wouldn't have problems even with the old rules.

Yes to Sinclair and the Keeper!

Alright here's one more from the Transformers franchise:

What's the work?

Ok, this will take a minute:

The Unicron Trilogy is a trilogy of Transformers series—Armada, Energon and Cybertron—adapted and dubbed from the original Japanese. And though Cybertron is a major departure and flat out nonsensical in its form as a "continuation", the English localization established it as such.

Thing is, originally? Cybertron WASN'T a continuation. Called Galaxy Force in Japan, this show was made as a reboot of Armada and Energon, explaining the massive character changes and departures from consistent logic. Today we're talking about Galaxy Force as the standalone entity it was created to be originally.

In it, the Cybertrons (Autobots) and Destrons (Decepticons) fight each other for control of the Chip Square (Cybertron's Omega Lock) and the 4 Force Chips ("Cyber Planet Keys") to save their planet Seibertron from the Grand Black Hole, each team lead by Master Megatron (obvious) and..........Galaxy Convoy (Optimus Prime). [lol]

One character without a weird name change?

Who is Starscream? What has he done?

Master Megatron's treacherous lieutenant, Starscream here is, as always, supposedly in service of Master Megatron, but truthfully works for his own aims.

After many episodes of fighting the Cybertrons for the Force Chips and Chip Square in service of Master Megatron, Starscream makes his move. Tricking Master Megatron and most of the rest of his Destron team into space where he traps them in an impenetrable orb to remain forever, Starscream travels to the Arctic and locates an ancient army of locked-away Destrons. Unleashing them onto Earth with the proclamation that it will be an "apocalypse", Starscream decides to hold off on outright decimating humanity until he has found the Chip Square.

Locating his target, Starscream attacks the Cybertrons—an entire city of civilians only saved from Starscream's devastating assault because the Cybertrons lure him away—and tears his way through them all, only being beaten down by Galaxy Convoy at the last second. In response, Starscream opens fire on the Cybertrons' human children allies to distract Galaxy Convoy long enough for Starscream to swipe the Chip Square, bringing it to a volcanic lair and—rather than use it to close the growing Grand Black Hole as the Cybertrons want to—begins using it to drain the spirit of Primus on Seibertron, granting himself godlike powers and size.

Declaring himself "Super Starscream", he attempts to destroy a rescued-Master Megatron, the Destrons and the Cybertrons—risking his power outright blowing up the Earth in the process—and proclaiming his mastery of the universe with his powers capable of annihilating an entire continent of Earth at will. Luckily, before Super Starscream can begin his conquest, the Cybertrons manage to lay enough of a smackdown on him to warrant his retreat aboard the ship "Atlantis", piloted by Starscream's ally Noiseblaze (Sideways).

Traveling into space, Starscream—desiring even more of Primus's power—comes across the Cybertrons using Primus to try to close the Grand Black Hole and save the universe from consumption. Starscream, uh, proceeds to attack and steal the power being used to close the Black Hole to empower himself even further instead, flatout uncaring about the Black Hole consuming the galaxy so long as he obtains power. He tries to murder Primus and Seibertron and all of the Cybertrons currently inside it, only to be beaten by Primus into submission and sent fleeing again.

Starscrean kidnaps the Cybertrons ally Hop, and orders Noiseblaze to tortuously Mind Rape him and remove all of his memories except for the location of the final Force Chip, and though Hop is saved, Starscream manages to follow the Cybertrons to the planet where the final Force Chip is located. Ordering his former ally Chromia to run a suicide mission and fight Master Megatron and the Cybertrons lest he tear her to pieces himself, Starscream also uses Noiseblaze as a stall tactic, sending him to fight his enemies alone and nearly die to stall for time.

Eventually confronting Master Megatron—now Galvatron—in a final duel to see who will claim the Chip Square and become the new god of the universe, Starscream puts up a hell of a fight but is ultimately beaten by Master Galvatron and sent blasting into another dimension, sealed away. In his final appearance in the series, Starscream reaches out to a despairing Master Galvatron, whose plans have failed and left him near defeat, and Starscream goads Master Galvatron on to finish what they started, responding to Galvatron's proclamation that he will "destroy the galaxy with my bare hands!" with a smirk and "That's the Master Galvatron I know." Galvatron goes on to try to destroy all of Seibertron and its populace, hoping to remake the galaxy in his image before he is killed.

Mitigating features?

Nah none to speak of, he's got a shitton of Villainous Valour but he's a Bad Boss and Chronic Backstabbing Disorder extraordinaire who manipulates and betrays everyone, and is lacking the redeeming past + questionable agency of his English dub counterpart.

Heinousness?

He's bad enough, yeah. His army of Destrons being unleashed is given far more weight here. In the dub Starscream bluntly says he has no interest in humanity and mocks them for thinking he would target them when he has higher aspirations...here? Starscream flat out calls his plans an "apocalypse" for Earth and promises his minions that he will let them run rampant and cause total destruction across the surface of Earth once he finds the Chip Square so they can slake their hunger for violence. He then goes on to outright subvert attempts by the Cybertrons to save their homeworld and the entire galaxy from the Black Hole just for a power boost, and later goads Master Galvatron on in destroying the galaxy, while having lots of Kick the Dog moments in between. His plans once he attains godhood aren't delved into quite as much as Galvatron's outright proclamation of remaking the universe, but Starscream nearly blows up the Earth just to test his powers and he brags that he will crush all life if it attains his goals.

Galvatron's his main competition in heinousness, but Starscream does more than enough for himself to get pushed over.

Final Verdict?

I'm a Yes to Galaxy Force!Starscream.

My day has finally settled a bit - I see that N wrote a potential RI entry, but personally it feels a bit wordy, so here's me throwing my hat in the ring.

  • Wreck-It Ralph: Turbo/King Candy (Any of the consequences of his actions that could push him over the baseline are Fridge Horror and he's unconnected to the Cy-Bugs' attack on Sugar Rush)

There's been pretty much universal desire to re-add him, so if people are cool with this entry, I can take it to the LP thread shortly.

Additionally, there has clearly been some discrepancies recently between how we use the trope and what's on the Administrivia page, so I'm gonna take some time tonight to go through, chainsaw as needed, fix as needed, and add some FAQ stuff that I think might resolve some of the issues we've been having. Stay tuned!

BTW, is Galaxy Force Starscream going to be listed with the other Unicron Trilogy entries? If so, then the Unicron Trilogy will now have enough entries for its own section on the page!
