Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

[up] The thing is the story doesn't show his care for her at all really. It is stated multiple times him trying to revive her is due to his need to control things and he actively did not seek help to cure her because he did not want to give up his miraculous.

[up]But he was still trying to revive her. Again, it would be one thing if like Belos, he was only bringing her back to mold her into a puppet, but as far as I can tell from the EP that isn't the case. A tiny redeeming quality is still a tiny redeeming quality.

Alright. This should be a fairly short one. Let's see if I still got it:

What's the work?

Pokémon Reset Bloodlines is a fanfic of Pokémon: The Series about the destruction of the anime's take on the Pokémon world and the creation of a new one, both similar and different.

But we're not here to talk about the new world. No, what we're here to talk about is the last days of the original one and the individual responsible for the catastrophe.

Who is he? What has he done?

We open at an early point in Ash's journey through the Kalos region. Things seem perfectly normal at first, but then things start... disappearing. At first, it's just foodstuffs and bits of foliage. Then it escalates to parts of the landscape, parts of the sky... and people. As the ground they're standing on vanishes, Ash and company fall into an endless void before Ash is suddenly transported to the Hall of Origin. Once he's there, Arceus drops a bombshell on him: the universe he knew and everyone in it is Deader than Dead.

As it turns out, the anime version of Cyrus not only survived, but succeeded in his goal to gain control over the space-time continuum. But if he wanted to destroy the universe to create his "world without spirit", he would have to make all the changes in one go and do it quickly before somebody stopped him. So he took some time to practice, introducing cosmic retcons like the introduction of the Fairy-type and taking petty revenge on Ash by manipulating things to make him lose (though it's specifically noted that not every defeat or failure can be blamed on Cyrus).

Eventually, Cyrus managed to alter the end results of the birth of Dialga and Palkia in a way that would shatter reality and remake it according to his own desires. As the temporal distortion starts impacting the Hall of Origin, Arceus explains to Ash that he'll be sent back to the day he became a trainer so he can prevent Cyrus from doing this, though a number of complications means that things will be substantially different.

Then the Hall of Origin and Arceus are no more, with the only hope of preventing catastrophe being Ash Ketchum.

Heinousness?

Well, it's kind of hard to top destroying the universe and killing everyone in it. No issues here.

Freudian Excuse? Other mitigating factors?

The only possible one is the fact that Cyrus never actually appears in person. However, even ignoring the fact that this is specifically the old timeline's Cyrus, who already got plenty of characterization in the series, the recap of his motives and his grudge against Ash still keep him out of Generic Doomsday Villain status. So yeah, I'd say that's not an issue at all.

Conclusion?

He's an obvious keep who was sitting right under my nose the whole time, and I'm frankly astonished it took me so long to notice. [tup]

Abstain on Tabuu due to the other guy committing genocide.

[tdown] for Renner. I remember that she was discussed before and down voted because this is a story full of horrible people on both sides.

[tup] for Mateos but [tdown] for Janosch. Four people is close but not enough for me. What about the other bad guys? How common is murder and torture in the show?

[tup] for the Dragon King.

[tdown] for Hawk Moth. If he still does all this to bring back his dead wife he can’t be a CM no matter how many people he kills.

[tup] for Muck. Wow...

Abstain on Cyrus due to never showing up in the fic. Sure he showed up in the Anime but I consider that a different work.

Good morning!

So here's the full conversation that contains the line for Tabuu. This is an exchange between Tabuu and Eclipse:

Tabuu: I know how you feel...
break
Tabuu: This pain...I was forced to endure, forced to bear this pain just like you...that stupid old hand...he didn't understand a thing. He claimed that this pain was good, that it would grant me great power...This pain...it is what drove me mad...it is what caused me to kill all the ones I loved...it is what made those remaining drive me out of the place I had always called home...he says that I am...that we are tainted, but what he doesn't see is that it is he that is tainted!
Eclipse: Wh-who-who-wh-who are y-you?
Tabuu: They call me the Subspace Lord...The Bane of Light...I am Tabuu
Eclipse: You! G-Get the hell out of my head!
Tabuu: You interest me, young one…You interest me quite a lot… after all… it is the broken shard of my wing, is it not, currently ebbed in your chest…?
Eclipse: Argh…Y-You claim… you claim great power… comes with no pain… and yet… it is your power that's causing this now…
Tabuu: It is not mine, but the hand. It is the hand who you should be angry with. My shard reacts to the power of the hand… the dark power of Subspace recoils from that of the Smashers. Master Hand may have claimed you as the last guardian, but it is through my power that you were able to live through having that shard within you! We are like twin stars, you and I… Join me… join me and together we shall exterminate the guardians once and for all!

This exchange contradicts oh-so much with the characterization established prior, comes out of left field, and then resumes to being the mustache-twirling Evil Overlord.

Geez, no wonder everyone's abstaining coz the fanfic really has a Designated Hero problem.sad

[up] That sounds.... pretty disqualifying, honestly. Even if it's not mentioned or treated as relevant afterwards, that's generally not the same as actively subverting it. We're not here to judge the quality of the writing after all, only whether the character meets the threshold or not.

I think I'll swap from abstaining to [tdown] for Tabuu.

[tup] Muck and the Dragon King. Abstaining on Cyrus.

Here's an MCU candidate I've been meaning to revisit. Daredevil (2015) is a Netflix original tv series set in the before being moved to Disney + with all it's sibling shows, being one of the main series in The Defenders (2017) lineup.

Based off the comic book of the same name, the series focuses on Matt Murdock, blind lawyer of Hell's Kitchen moonlighting as a masked vigilante fighting crime both day and night. His two main obstacles — besides how his work affects himself and his social life — comes in two forums; Wilson Fisk and his empire (who it goes without saying is far from this trope as you can get) and an even greater criminal conspiracy of "The Hand".

And one of the main representatives of the Hand is the apparent Yakuza boss, Nobu Yoshioka, the series' secondary antagonist.

    open/close all folders

Who is Nobu Yoshioka ? What does he do ?

A high ranking member within the Hand, Nobu is the second in command to their Japanese boss, Murakami. While Murakami preferred to work by himself, Nobu ran their criminal operations, becoming a dreaded underboss in his own right. On Murakami's behalf, Nobu was sent to New York as an investor for Wilson Fisk's criminal empire, planning to use it for the Hand's own end. While everyone believes that they are merely the Yakuza, Nobu and his people plan to buy out properties in Hell's Kitchen and excavate the city.

It is later revealed they are trying to unearth the skeleton of a dragon, whose bones would be used to grant the Hand leaders, including Nobu, further immortality powers. Of course, unearthing these bones pays the small price of disrupting New York's foundations and destroying the whole city. Nobu is also responsible for a Superhuman Trafficking operation of smuggling a Black Sky — a child groomed to be a living weapon for the Hand — into New York, but these operations are disrupted when by Daredevil, and his mentor Stick — the latter of whom kills the child.

Irate that Fisk won't turn over the property Nobu wants, it turns out one tenant, an elderly woman named Elena Cardenas, refused to move. When Nobu threatens Fisk with what he and his people can do to his organization, the two make a deal; Fisk has Cardeas killed, in return for Nobu finding a "specialist" against the vigilante. Being a Blood Knight, that "specialist" is Nobu himself, who faces Matt in a warehouse he's lured too. In the fight, Nobu seriously injures and leaves Matt bloody and beaten; however, Nobu sets ablaze a gas spilling and bad wiring. When Nobu seemingly dies, Fisk is glad to be rid of a liability.

After Fisk's downfall, Nobu is resurrected through the immortality of the Hand's leaders, and sets up shop in Fisk's power vacuum. Still posing as Yakuza, Nobu takes proxy control over the Roxxon Corporation and uses it to run the Hand's operations in New York — during their investigations, Daredevil and his partner Elektra uncover the pit that Nobu and his men are digging beneath New York. One of the employees in Nobu's pocket was a book-keeper named Stan Winston, who is kept in line when Nobu takes his son Daniel hostage under the threat of killing him. In actuality, Nobu has Daniel tortured along with several other young teenagers to harvest their blood for a Resurrection Sarcophagus in their search for a new Black Sky.

When Daredevil learns of this, Stan takes him to their location, where they find Nobu's captives being drained alive, and left tortured and broken. As they try to free them, Nobu reveals himself to Daredevil, and after a quick fight manages to escape. As the captives are taken to the hospital, it is revealed that the kids were subjected to severe chemical brainwashing in addition to their torture. When Nobu sends his assassins to retrieve them, the brainwashed kids "willingly" leave with them, during which Daniel would kill his own father. With his hostages returned, Nobu finishes bleeding them out, before resuming his search for a new Black Sky.

Soon, Nobu has Stick — a member of the Hand's rival faction, the Chaste — kidnapped and viciously tortured for information, notably having needles painfully stuck under the man's finger nails. When Daredevil and Elektra arrive, it is revealed that Elektra is the new Black Sky, explaining her murderous instincts — Nobu attempts to sway her to their side, claiming it's her destiny to serve as the Hand's weapon. While Elektra escapes, Nobu concludes that Daredevil is the greatest threat, and the one thing holding Elektra back, deciding to make a final move against him.

To this end, Nobu has Detective Brett Mahoney battered, and threatens Mahoney's mother to hand over a list of twenty people who were previously saved by Daredevil. These twenty people — including Matt's love interest Karen Page — are abducted and threatened with execution to lure Daredevil to them, executing one of the more loud hostages. With Nobu's men getting into a standoff with the police, Daredevil and Elektra manage to help free the hostages. Nobu is irate that Elektra won't accept their destiny, with he and his men engaging the two in a final fight, during which Elektra tricks Nobu into fatally stabbing her, to his further fury.

As Frank Castle finishes off the rest of Nobu's men, Nobu himself is flung off the roof by Daredevil...only to immediately resurrect...and then immediately decapitated by Stick. After Nobu's permanent death, the Hand's leaders would collectively return to New York, resurrecting Elektra into the new Black Hand, and picking up where Nobu left off when he was close to fruition.

    Mitigating Qualities ?

Nobu was previously shot down for working under Murakami, the actual leader of his faction, with the claim being Nobu was Just Following Orders. While this is true to an extent, I don't think they hold up.

The Hand is a pretty big criminal conspiracy, with five different factions, with open division and even infighting among the leaders. If Nobu was portrayed as just being an agent or a grunt under the Hand's plans, I think it'd hold true. However Nobu is The Dragon to Murakami, and is shown as having power and authority under their faction.

Murakami is portrayed as more of a distant leader, staying in Japan and doing his own thing — hunting and fighting dangerous animals for his free time, while Nobu is portrayed as the one actually running their operations in New York, and the most proactive in pushing the Hand's current endgame.

The other bosses are pretty hands off when it comes to their criminal operations — with exception of Madam Gao. Their top leader Alexandra spends her time doing mundane activities. None of the Hands' leaders actually stepped in until Nobu's death, and that was after he came close to fulfilling their plans. Even if Nobu is a cog in their grand scheme, he's a pretty big cog that has considerable power in their operations.

Other than all of that, nothing. He's portrayed as a cold blooded, ruthless, Soft-Spoken Sadist, befitting of a Yakuza Boss, and a prideful Blood Knight. At most, he gets annoyed when he and Gao are on the receiving end of a racist remark. He also considers Daredevil a Worthy Opponent, which is erroneously listed as a Pet the Dog moment, when in actuality he's annoyed that Daredevil doesn't respect him.

As for his boss, Nobu and Murakami's actual relationship is never explored, but from what is shown, his loyalty would be fanatical than redeeming. "But isn't his endgame to help the Hand's bosses to further their immortality ? Doesn't that imply some genuine loyalty on Nobu's end ?"

It would, except Nobu is also hopped up on their immortality powers; in context, Nobu is as much as an Immortality Seeker as his bosses. Furthermore, his actor describes Nobu as being almost religiously motivated by his place in the Hand, and we see some of that fanaticism with his insisting that Elekra being the Black Sky is her destiny.

    Heinous Standard ?

Within the MCU ? I'd say he does pretty (in)decently. Within the Hand and their operations, Nobu was initially the most proactive in pushing for their end goal, which would have seen New York's foundation being disrupted and the city destroyed, which is a pretty far reach for acting as a mere Yakuza crime boss. And while Nobu's bosses do step in to pick up where he left off, it's after he did most of the heavy lifting.

Besides the reaching endgame their plans, I'd say the stuff Nobu personally pulls off are pretty nasty for the MCU — at least as far as a crime boss goes. He has several kids — or at least young teenagers — girls tortured and subjected to chemical brainwashing while literally bleeding them dry; and crosses another nasty line in his ordering the abduction and planned murder of twenty innocent people.

Within the Hand, Nobu's biggest competition is Madame Gao who runs the heroin trade in New York. Between the two, Nobu gets his hands dirtier, doing more visible harm to innocent people caught in their schemes.

Gao was a lot closer to a supervillain than Nobu was, to the point I'm not sure if I can adequately compare them, mainly because Nobu acts more comparatively as a mundane Yakuza Boss. One of Gaos's more reaching crimes was ordering a suicide bombing against Russian traffickers, and joining the other Hand Leaders in trying to level New York. With all that, IMO it's his torture and eventual murder of these teenagers that give Nobu that extra push.

[up][up] Not really. Gao is listed as an MB, and the other leaders don't do much onscreen, besides trying to push their mutual endgame; that being New York's destruction for more "Dragon Bone Immortality". Two of them even have genuine redeeming qualities.

As for Nobu's boss, Murakami, he's too distant from their factions operations, IMO, not really directing or ordering Nobu around — instead he just spends his time hunting and fighting wild animals.
