Maybe a crowner to determine if we keep the Bird part?

I don't really see why we should get rid of the "bird" part yeah I guess it would be shorter but I don't really think it's that long with it only four letters.

According to Wikipedia, the word "dodo" comes either from the Dutch word "dodoor", meaning "sluggard", "dodaars", meaning "fat-arse" or "knot-arse", or less likely the Portuguese word "doudo", meaning "fool" or "crazy" (this was the version I heard before), though it's also possible that it's imitating the animal's voice.

It's not just the name we need to decide on. We also need to decide whether to change the definition to any instance of dodos Played for Laughs, instead of only applying to stupid dodos. Obviously, either one of those definitions would be an improvement over the current Chairs-y definition.

[tup]For expanding it to "funny dodos". Preferring the name Doofy Dodo over Doofy Dodo Bird (or the current).

Can a mod call the consensus to define as comic relief dodo? I think the name could use an Alt Names crowner.

[up]Have you hollered?

Edit: Made a crowner just in case. We can ditch the definition-based options if the mods think it's already safe to call the thread in favor of comedic dodos in general.

Safe to call in favor of rename + define as dodos being Played for Laughs.

/hat off

Doofy Dodo sounds good for a name. I can go either way on whether to include "bird" at the end or not.

Rename crowner

I'm for just "Doofy Dodo" as well. "Dead as a dodo" and "Go the way of the dodo" don't reference stupid people and aren't confused as such.

I checked the Dumb Dodo Bird example on VideoGame.Animal Crossing New Horizons (which I already looked at in the past) and I think it just needs to have the reference to stupidity removed (since we're tweaking the definition to include comedic dodos in general), since the two dodos are eccentric (particularly Wilbur's Word-Salad Humor code names and his tendency to spell things with the NATO Phonetic Alphabet) and their gimmick is that they're flightless birds running an airline company.

Doofy Dodo it is. Calling.

Do we need to make adjustments to the description first?

[up] The first crowner decided to define it as "dodos being Played for Laughs" and include examples of dodos being unintelligent because most examples of dodos being stupid are done because it's funny. The description needs to be adjusted to focus more on the comedic aspect of dodos.

Bumping to see if anyone has a sandbox ready for the description. Sandbox.Dumb Dodo Bird and Sandbox.Doofy Dodo don't exist, so if there's already a sandbox, it isn't there.

Edit: I made Sandbox.Doofy Dodo, but it could probably use some extra work. I cut out the chairs-y parts and added parts related to ways they can be Played for Laughs in ways that don't portray them as stupid.

It's been more than a week since I last posted, and only two other people have edited the sandbox. Do we need any further changes, or is it safe for the mods to move Sandbox.Doofy Dodo to Main.Doofy Dodo?

I think it's also worth noting that one of the additions that isn't by me is a sentence to put on Laconic.Doofy Dodo.

Edit: I checked and while Laconic.Dumb Dodo Bird already exists, it misuses Too Dumb to Live to mean "very, very stupid" instead of the proper definition of "character's stupidity puts them in a life-threatening situation", so the sandbox's Laconic text is definitely better.

[up]Does it? I thought part of the point of "Dumb Dodo Bird" was that "their stupidity is what caused their extinction".

[down]I meant the old definition of course, before the rename.

Also, though it wasn't me who added that extra sentence, it was me who tagged it as "this goes on Laconic", because it just sounded like a Laconic definition rather than part of the description.

Not really; I mean that's part of it, but the trope is more about the portrayal of Dodo Birds as stupid and silly.

The old definition was actually just "dodos exist(ed)", which is Chairs, due to a paragraph that was in the description when the page was first made and only recently removed (albeit without TRS, due to the one who removed it not knowing it had been there since the beginning as opposed to being added later). As for dodos being portrayed as stupid, the trope covers instances of dodos being portrayed as stupid in any context, not just the event that caused their extinction.

It's been over a week since there have been any edits to the sandbox, so I'm going to post a Locked Pages thread request to put the sandbox in place. I don't think too many tweaks were needed, anyway.

Edit: Done.
