Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Guys, calm down. It's a fanfic of South Park. Now if it was the REAL South Park that could be potentially be a problem. As we have seen several times the writing of Trey and Matt doesn't mix with this trope ((it's definitely possible for someone to count in a later season, but still kind of unlikely).

Just popping in to remind everyone that I'm more than willing to have questionable nosleep/fanfics dumped on me since I need to participate in these threads more, and I can only imagine how annoying it must be for Tyk to be constantly singled out for this. With that being said I'm not voting on the South Park character due to the concerns the likes of Austin DR have raised.

So anyway, Sombra's a keeper too, nice! I'll get her and Doomfist written up before long, but I did promise another effortpost. And you guys are going to get it! Like I said, it's a very unconventional version of a beloved Marvel villain who already has at least two Magnificent Bastard incarnations to my knowledge. And just who is this villain? Well first, let's go over the setting.

What's the work?

LEGO Marvel Superheroes, one of many entries in Traveller's Tales' successful and surprisingly fun LEGO game adaptations of established IP's-turned collectathon action platformers where you can play as just about anyone. Usually they're more comedic retellings of stuff like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Indiana Jones, but this game tells it's own story that melds aspects of the mainstream comics and MCU together.

And the plot is rather simple: when planet-eating cosmic entity Galactus sends his herald the Silver Surfer out to find planets for him to consume, he ends up on Earth and after a brief confrontation with Iron Man and S.H.I.E.L.D, longtime Fantastic Four enemy Doctor Doom intercepts him and shatters his board into powerful LEGO bricks called Cosmic Bricks. And as it turns out, Doctor Doom and the Asgardian god of mischief Loki are in cahoots, and seek to collect all the bricks so they can turn it into a superweapon (Christened by Doom as the Doom Ray of Doom) they can use to protect the Earth from Galactus' coming... and of course, use as a means to bully the world into letting them rule it. Or at least, Doom does while Loki has his own plans... so of course, the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four all have to work together and fight Doom and Loki's own Legion of Doom consisting of villains such as Magneto, Doctor Octopus, Abomination, Green Goblin, and the Red Skull and save the day in the process!

So who's today's candidate anyway? Doom? Loki? Nah, neither of those guys. The guy I had in mind is none other than Magneto, the master of magnetism himself!

Who is Magneto?

One of Marvel's biggest villains, Magneto is an elderly mutant whose powers give him the ability to control anything metallic, and a Mutant supremacist whose traumatic childhood as a Holocaust survivor led to him believing that the heavily discriminated mutants had to fight back against humans by any means necessary before history repeats itself and they become victims of another holocaust themselves.

Of course, those aspects of his character are downplayed here due to the game's light-hearted and family friendly nature, but he's still an incredibly witty, devious, and likeable adversary all the same, with Nolan North providing a damn good Tom Kane impersonation to boot. In this game, Magneto is one of many villains in Doom and Loki's cabal of supervillains and proves important enough to get top billing the aforementioned Big Bad Duumvirate. Already a feared opponent of the X-Men, Magneto proves to be a thorn in all the heroes' sides thanks to the manpower his Brotherhood of Mutants provides to the villains, his dangerous powerset, and his intelligence, of course.

What does he do?

When he's first introduced, Magneto leads fellow Brotherhood members Mystique and Sabertooth on an assault on the supervillain prison called The Raft on Doctor Doom's orders. Iron Man, Hulk, and Wolverine are able to contain a few villains like The Leader, Whiplash, and Abomination, but Magneto is ultimately successful in springing free a number of dangerous supervillains, with the master of magnetism himself humiliating Iron Man by using his powers to strip him of his armor and leave him in his underwear before leaving them in the dust.

Eventually the plot progresses to where a trip to Asgard and a fight with Loki ends with Thor, Captain America, the Human Torch, and Wolverine getting the Tesseract, a powerful artifact belonging to the Asgardians that was intended to act as a power source for the Doom Ray. While Thor, Cap, and Torch argue about what to do with it, Wolverine simply walks off with it and heads over to the X-Mansion where he tries to get headmaster and X-Men leader Charles Xavier to see if he can unlock it's secrets... something that Loki and Doom are quick to catch onto. Doom sends Magneto to the mansion, and after having his Brotherhood launch an attack that severely tears up the mansion, Magneto and Mystique are quick to steal it in the chaos and escape, another part of the villain team's plan successfully in motion.

But the heroes are quick to fight back, and the Fantastic Four and Nick Fury chase the Tesseract to Doctor Doom's castle in Latveria, where he's forced to flee after they launch a successful invasion. He takes off in a stolen S.H.I.E.L.D submarine with his Cosmic Bricks, but Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, and even X-Man (Or rather, woman) Jean Grey successfully corner him and knock him out before taking the submarine back home. Things are looking grim for Doom's plans seeing as how he's basically been caught with his pants down... then suddenly, a giant metal arm stops the submarine. A green giant metal arm belonging to a certain American icon that is a symbol of New York City...

Yes, Magneto has used his powers to take control of the Statue of Liberty and brings Captain America damn near to tears when he hears about it. After smugly chiding the heroes for being "rude to a lady", Magneto pries Doom and the bricks free from the submarine and flings it all the way back to Liberty Island before having it stomp off to Magneto's next destination: a Roxxon nuclear plant where he, Mystique, and a telepathic mutant called Mastermind launch an assault so they can steal a nuclear core needed for Doom's plan. Mr. Fantastic, Wolverine, and Hulk go out to stop them, but after climbing all the way to the top of Lady Liberty and subduing Mastermind, Magneto simply has her rip off her head with the heroes in it and fling it far away before having the headless statue stomp back with the core he needed in hand.

Determined to avenge Lady Liberty, Captain America takes Thing with him to the island Magneto retreated to, which is revealed to be the prehistoric Savage Land where dinosaurs still roam the Earth. After fighting their way through waves of Brotherhood Acolytes, Magneto's turrets, and velociraptors, the pair is joined by Storm of the X-Men, and the trio learn that Magneto is using the stolen nuclear core as a power source for his space station Asteroid M, so they can use said station as a place to safely operate their Doom Ray from. They fight their way past Spider-Man villain Rhino and desperately throw down with Magneto in hopes of stopping him from achieving liftoff with Asteroid M... but whoops! It turns out that the Magneto they fought was the shapeshifting Mystique in disguise, meanwhile Magneto is given more than enough time to prepare for liftoff without their interference, successfully getting Doom's plan that much closer to completion.

Doom, Magneto, and Loki are then preparing the Doom Ray for usage, but Magneto is concerned with Loki's presence on board the space station and the fact that he keeps selfishly referring to the group's world domination plan as "MY revenge on Earth", and outright states that he is the god of mischief when he voices his concerns to an oblivious Doom. But Magneto's concerns go unheard, and Iron Man (Decked out in demagnetized armor so he doesn't get stripped down to his undies again), Thor, and Spider-Man all board the meteor and force him to head them off and defend it. But this is the end of the line, and after a big fight Magneto is trounced by the trio and strung up by Spidey's webbing. He asks for help from Doom and Loki, but is ignored and tossed into space where he soon lands in the Baxter Building where the Fantastic Four are cleaning things up.

This is pretty much the end of Magneto's big villainous endeavors, because soon afterwards his concerns are proven right: Loki betrays Doom and uses the Doom Ray to take control over Galactus instead of destroying him like they agreed. Now, Loki wants to use Galactus to wipe out Earth and Asgard for his humiliating defeats on both planets in the past, but thanks to quick thinking from Nick Fury, Doom's legion of villains, Magneto included, team up with the heroes and send Galactus packing, who in turn drags a screaming Loki with him through a portal to deep space. And so, the day is saved! And since the villains DID help stop the end of the world, they're all allowed a thirty second head start to run away before the heroes come after them, and Magneto is last seen urging a smug, boastful Doom to run away and not waste his time monologuing.

And that's it for his appearances in the series, since the sequel had the unfortunate timing to come out in that weird era where all X-Men and Fantastic Four characters were banned from video games and such thanks to Disney and Marvel getting petty over movie rights issues before getting them back.

How does he operate? Is he magnificent?

While he's not an outright idiot, Doom's intelligence from the comics is scaled back quite a bit here. He can be a bit of a bumbler at times, and gets caught by surprise quite a few times, leading to Loki and Magneto being more of the brains behind the operations. And Magneto is very, very good at his job: he's incredibly good at outmaneuvering the heroes and pulls victory after victory out from under their noses until the very end of the game where he still puts up a good fight.

He's also stylish and classy to a fault, and loves to make witty banter with the heroes while styling all over them. And as shown by him saving a captured Doctor Doom using the Statue of Liberty as an improvised weapon, which gives multiple groups of heroes a hard time as he stalls them and takes full advantage of his mastery over magnetism, he's definitely good at thinking on his feet. And even when he's trounced, he remains calm and dignified before and after being launched into space, and when he's contacted for a hero/villain teamup against Galactus and Loki, he doesn't hesitate to check his pride at the doors and agree to it before chewing out Abomination for whining about said teamup.

Plus, he also tells off Doom for whining about getting his jet impounded, which makes him look even more like "the adult in the room" as far as Doom's cabal goes.

Is he a bastard?

Well, yeah. I mean, he is the head of a mutant supremacist organization, and launches attacks on the Raft and even Charles Xavier's school for young mutants which puts a lot of people in danger. And then, you have the fact that he's trying to help take over the world and he even defaces Lady Liberty the monster...

Is he too much of a bastard?

Nah. My comedic Patriotism aside he could stand to be a lot worse: his attacks on the school and prison have a purpose to them and he doesn't have his men try to murder and slaughter people so much as he tries to just have them cause chaos for the heroes to deal with. Plus, he's very much not okay with the Earth being destroyed (for pragmatic reasons) and is willing to stop Loki's plan of weaponizing Galactus for double planetary genocide. And while there are undertones of mutant supremacy in his dialogue, he's A-OK with working with humans and doesn't give them a hard time despite Marvel universe's historically rocky human/mutant relations. Granted, I don't know if that's a get out of jail free card since bigotry can be a real point against an MB's favor but it's worth mentioning all the same.

How's his competition?

Magneto's one of the most competent villains in these games. Again, Doom isn't an idiot but he is a lot less intelligent than his canon interpretation (Which I honestly don't mind since my increasing familiarity with the comics has made me bored with how eye-rollingly invincible he can be) and gets tricked and embarrassingly defeated quite a few times. Meanwhile, Loki is a sly bastard who plays Doom and every other associated bad guy like fiddles in his bid to destroy Earth and Asgard, but not only does he not take defeat well either time he's beaten in the game, but when he's alone with Galactus he's reduced to pathetically begging from mercy from the hungry planet eater. As far as the first game goes he's definitely heads and shoulders above everyone else in the intelligence department, and even with Kang the Conqueror from the sequel factored in he still stands out since Kang, while also competent and gets at least one good moment of trickery in over the Avengers, he doesn't do enough to outright overshadow him.

Final thoughts?

Assuming his (heavily downplayed) mutant supremacist tendencies aren't too much, I'd say he's an easy keeper.

[tup] Magneto

Okay so far Bebe's got 7 [tup] 0 [tdown] and many people abstaining (Though that's mainly due to the Fan pic's source material rather than the character herself) so I'll just do her write-up before I forget.

  • ''South Park fanfic Girls Game: Bebe Stevens proves to far more cunning and audacious here than in the show. Rallying all the girls throughout South Park against the boys and becoming their leader, she would write her orders to them via invisible ink, so no one but them can see. Bebe would also ally herself with child mobster Loogie where she would be under Loogie's protection while Bebe would deliver baby teeth to Loogie; Bebe specifically has Karen McCormick deliver the baby teeth to Loogie so that her brother Kenny would be too busy keeping Karen safe to stop Bebe's plan. Bebe would also kick Stan Marsh in the groin and rip out his wig, thus exposing Stan's disguise in front of the girls, with many of the other disguised boys following suit. Gathering all the children to the school gym, Bebe reveals her plan to use a magical fortune telling device she created to rid of the boys and those she deems traitors while reshaping reality and time In in her own image. Nearly succeeding in her goals and only stopped only by the sudden intervention of Dr. Mephesto's creations, the boys decide to forgive Bebe and invite her and the other girls to hang out with them, because they were so impressed that Bebe pulled off such an incredible plan.

Also I'm not deliberately trying to find someone from SP that might count as a MB. I'm just reading SP Fan Fics now to pass the time before the 23rd season arrives next month and just came across that I thought might count. Maybe someone might qualify there maybe not, but its definitely not my concern.

Also, the last time we discussed South Park here was nearly three months ago when you guys wanted to cut Leslie Meyers.

Plus username said this is just a fan fic not actually South Park so their's no reason to get uptight, I mean we do have a pair of Complete Monsters in an SP fan fic (Walls Trilogy).
