Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Yes to Kirinmaru and Neo. Still reading the others but no to the nazi guy and I'll leave it at that. As someone with German roots, the Holocaust disgusts me. The reason characters like Oskar Schindler were approved was because they tried to stop The Holocaust and were retired nazis, sure Schindler did it for financial gain at first but he never treated his workers terribly or judged them for being Jewish. This guy looks like an unrepentant nazi and there's nothing magnificent about bigotry especially towards minorities and groups that are prime targets of racism. That's one of our main disqualifiers. Yes, yes, we've had racist examples before, but they were Fantastic Racists. I don't think we've ever truly had an actual racist example that wasn't prejudiced against a fictional race. There's a reason Black Panther's Big Bad doesn't count despite only being racist to white people.

Edit: Yes to Asgard and Kuroto.

[tdown] to Stroheim. I don't think he's magnificent enough. I don't think the issue is him being a nazi or him never winning a fight, I just don't think he meets the intelligence requirement. He's not nearly as clever as Joseph, Caeser, or Kars. He's mostly just standing to the side throughout the series, and the most he really does is outfit himself with UV lights, which isn't really that magnificent because they all know that it's the Pillar Men's weakness.

[up][up]Yeah that's another red flag on top of him being a nazi. In order to be a candidate the character must be one of, if not the most intelligent characters in any given situation or at least be able to manipulate people better than the majority.

We've had silly examples before (Gruntilda, (if she's still up) Fawful, Eggman, and Bowser from Odyssey come to mind) but they offset it by being genuine threats in both intellect and bounce back if they are humiliated.

That's really my biggest issue with Stroheim. I love the guy and I don't think he ever demonstrates racism or supremacy, but...he's kinda not hanging with the rest?

My last Inuyasha one now: Sesshomaru's Mom

Who is Sesshomaru's Mother?

A powerful Daiyokai of the Dog variety, a playful and deceptively sweet lady and the ex-mate of Toga, Sessh's Mom had been with Toga centuries ago, having observed when toga and Kirinmaru saved the world from the Grim Comet. Eventually, she gave birth to Sesshomaru, but she and Toga eventually grew distant (implied to be her lack of care towards humans) and the two eventually parted. Toga fell in love with a human princess named Izayoi and fathered Inuyasha with her. Sesshomaru had little contact with his mother, who reigned over her own lands, before she is seen towards the end of Inuyasha.

Testing her son via the Meido stone left to her by Toga, she puts Sesshomaru through a series of rigorous trials, after inquiring if he intends to eat the humans with him, and chiding her son for lacking the charm of his father. In truth, she plays with Sesshomaru well and is inwardly delighted at his change of heart, reflecting fondly upon her departed ex and showing some concern over the fate of the wold.

Later, she allies with Kirinmaru to help the world, manipulating events from behind the scenes, even if it endangers her own granddaughters. Assisting Kirinmaru, she is eventually approached by her granddaughter and their cousin Moroha, while opting to test and guide them as well, calling forth the embodiment of wrath Meidomaru...before revealing the real details to her granddaughters and bidding them farewell, quite pleased with how it's all turned out.

Mitigating issues?

As a Daiyokai, she is unmistakably one of the most powerful beings in the series. Probably a tier under her husband, son and Kirinmaru, but she's never shown to get her hands dirty. She's graceful, elegant, soft-spoken and above all? Playful. She loves to tease and test people. Now bastard is easy. Her attitude is, uh, unique and she puts her own son in a test where he can easily die from it, while also putting her granddaughters in danger. It's also slightly hinted Sesshomaru might've picked up a dim view on humans from he, as she inquires if he plans to eat Rin and Kohaku.

That said, she does care about her family and is inwardly happy to guide her son to perfecting the Tenseiga as a weapon of healing. She implies she still cares for Toga despite their long separation and she works in small protections of her family with her deal with Kirinmaru. She's not altogether fond of humans as her husband was, but she's not a flaming racist, either. She just isn't too pleased about Moroha, but that's more Moroha being the granddaughter of her romantic rival.

Conclusion?

Easy keep as well.

Also yes to Kuroto Dan (times have changed since he had his redeeming qualities revealed!) and Neo.

Also no to Stroheim but guys… it’s JoJo: if it’s not making the point the dude is a bigot we don’t need to jump on a troper and start posturing “Grrr… Nazis offend me.” He’s plainly not being played with the depths they can be and we don’t need to make a troper think they supported some kind of bigotry for proposing a silly manga villain.

[tup] Sesshomaru and his mom, Yara, Raven, Snowden, the Tree, Eshu, Uhtred, Eleven, Grace, the Quartet, Rogue, Asgard, Kuroto, Kirinmaru, Neo. No to Stroheim.

Was able to churn out another for A Practical Guide to Evil. This is where we start to shift into the boring political elements of the setting, so bear with me.

The Dominion of Levant is a nation founded by five heroes (well, four and a villain, but they ignore that) many centuries ago. Heroes (the Bestowed) and their descendants (the Blood) act as the nation's royalty. For instance, the currently-approved Tariq is both a descendant and successor to the Name of the original founding Grey Pilgrim, meaning he's both Blood and Bestowed.

It's your stereotypical warrior society obsessed with honor and glorious death; anyone who is of the Blood or the Bestowed can go out and kill villains or giant monsters or do other cool stuff, with their deeds being recorded on the "Rolls" to keep track of all these lineages and the badass things they did. It's a big honor and basically what their entire society revolves around, to an obnoxious degree.

Make sense? Cool, on we go.

Who is Ishaq Deathless, the Barrow Sword?

Originally a simple woodsman from the outskirts of the Brocelian Forest — a cesspool filled with giant monsters, often used as a proving ground for young deed-seekers — Ishaq learned of the location of buried treasure from a desperate member of the Blood hoping to get onto the Rolls. He assembled a team of (naturally greedy and untrustworthy) adventurers, including the Blood lady, his lover, an experienced adventurer who jockeyed for power before Ishaq seduced him, and a few others, with only one he actually trusts due to a magically-binding "oath-ring." While searching for this treasure, Ishaq effortlessly outmaneuvered all their betrayals, leaving only him and the oath-ring guy alive when they finally find it — a Gigante barrow. Unfortunately, the latter guy just cut off the finger with the ring on (feels like an easy out, but whatever) and stabbed Ishaq.

Thrown into the barrow, a dying Ishaq found a cursed sword, which healed some of his wounds when it came into contact with his blood. Realizing it could fully heal him by taking another's soul, Ishaq climbed out of the barrow and killed his former partner, becoming the villainous Barrow Sword.

Meanwhile in the main plot, the Dead King declares war on all life, and Cat and the White Knight begin recruiting both heroes and villains (Evil Versus Oblivion and all) to stop him. Ishaq joins up, getting a pardon for his past crimes, and realizes he could use this opportunity to climb higher — after all, without said crimes, there's no reason he can't be added onto the Rolls for his Bestowal and accomplishments against the dead, and if they try to cheat him out of a lordship he can just drag in Cat, who would be forced to argue on his behalf. He had initially planned to just kill Cat and take her place as leader of the villains, giving him enough political power to negotiate directly with the Dominion, but she bitch-slapped him through a wall when he boasted to her face about this plan and they got drinks after. With her authority asserted he's chill with loyally serving as one of the more competent villains (i.e. one of the few not constantly jockeying for power/fighting/trying to kill allies) under her. Notable acts include:

  • Helping the White Knight clear out a bunch of shapeshifting ghouls that got into one of their important facilities.
  • Leading a group of heroes and villains on the lookout for Scourges (the Dead King's ten most dangerous Revenants), saving the Dominion lord Razin from the Drake (a sadistic, resurrecting brute all too happy to aid in his new master's genocide). Ishaq is apparently killed in the encounter but turns out to also be able to resurrect using souls he's taken with his blade, restraining the Drake so a more powerful hero can put him down for good.
  • Accompanying Cat for the invasion of Praes as her invisible bodyguard, killing an enraged Eudokia when she tries to avenge Black's death.
  • Acting as Cat's gloriously hammy Dragon when, in an effort to get the White Knight and another one of her important allies to play nice with each other, she... uh, drops a flying fortress in the middle of the countryside in classic Dread Empress fashion, forcing them to confront her together lest she eat the Bible. It Makes Sense in Context. Important information is that Ishaq takes to the role of Card-Carrying Villain with glee while delaying the White Knight, and, despite temporarily losing a leg in the conflict when his opponent starts taking it seriously, is promoted to leader of the villains once Cat takes on the more impartial arbiter role of Warden.

Due to Cat forcing him and the Dominion lords to interact more on the warfront, they eventually become amiable to giving him a chance to get on the rolls. While simply letting him in would kick up a fuss back home, they instead raise the bar for everyone; anyone can get onto the Rolls and become a noble, so long as they complete a worthy task for the good of the Dominion as a whole. Ishaq gets Cat involved when negotiating what this challenge should be (to set precedent for future villains to appeal to the Warden if they ever feel cheated) and is assigned to personally slay a Scourge.

Ishaq dutifully prepares for the challenge, assembling a group of heroes and villains tailor-suited to sneak him behind the enemy lines. Unfortunately, the Scourge they find — the Wolfhound — proves to be a little, well, invincible. Literally. Ishaq is able to make a small gap in the armor and begin feeding off his soul, but the Scourge also has a Knockback Shockwave Stomp attack to quickly throw him away, making him even more annoying. However, when Ishaq tries to steal his soul a second time and is about to be sent flying, he feels something looking over his shoulder.

Remember Sve Noc from a few days ago? Those drow goddesses with creepy, murder-fueled magic called Night? The ones who got a bit of an upgrade from their resurrection after Kurisov the Leech's failed ascension, and are naturally now looking to expand the ranks of their worshippers?

Ishaq happily takes them up on their unspoken offer, becoming the first non-drow Named to wield the Night as he uses it to burn the Wolfhound's soul with black fire and explode his head.

With that dealt with he manages the defenses of Cat's armies at the siege of the Dead King's capital, and upon returning from the war accepts a lordship to found his own town. Word of God confirms his sword eventually ate his soul, but it apparently occurred on his own terms.

Is he magnificent?

Again, not another brilliant master manipulator — most of his success with the Dominion is due to Cat essentially locking them in a room together until they get along — but Ishaq has enough "think on his feet" competence to get by.

There are some early moments that show he's not as clever as he thinks he is, but it's made plainly clear that's just due to inexperience, and he's given enough time to learn the ropes that by the end of the series he's become a pretty competent commander and political maneuverer. Ishaq gets everything he ever wanted, even setting things up so anti-villains, some of whom are only regarded as villains in the first place because of bad but ultimately minor stuff like grave robbing, will be able to be treated with respect for their genuinely positive actions in the future.

Is he a bastard?

Literally the first thing we learn about him is that he tried to kill Cat. His other crimes mostly consist of grave robbing and killing asshole adventuring companions, but while he's tamer than most in the setting it's made clear he's still a bad dude.

Verdict?

Weak keeper.

Ok I'm having trouble parsing this sentence:

"Acting as Cat's gloriously hammy Dragon when, in an effort to get the White Knight and another one of her important allies to play nice with each other, she... uh, drops a flying fortress in the middle of the countryside in classic Dread Empress fashion, forcing them to confront her together lest she eat the Bible."

Who dropped the castle on who? Cat or the White Knight?

Nonetheless I think I'm leaning a weak [tup] Ishaq. He does seem under Cat's thumb but develops into his own competent schemer by the end.

Cat drops the castle, playacting as a supervillain so her more heroic friends will stop bickering and get their shit together. I know it sounds like an unnecessary escalation of conflict, but, again, it makes sense in context.

…Okay, admittedly it’s still an unnecessary escalation, but I’ll explain in more detail later on.

Fabricating a security firm, Snowden recruits Shawn Spencer and several other experts seemingly to protect Bonaventure from assassination, while truthfully using them to find a method to assassinate Bonaventure that they wouldn't expect, nearly succeeding when Shawn's idea of an assassination from underground is viewed as too ridiculous to take seriously. When the think tank finds out about Snowden's true nature and discuss how to stop Snowden's second assassination attempt, Snowden has his brother-in-law, Fred Collins Boyd, feed Snowden information about their plans while subtly sabotaging the plan to protect Bonaventure. Even when captured, it's revealed that Snowden had a back-up plan, having Boyd wait in Bonaventure's limo and kill him when he flees there to escape.
