Can’t really comment on any recent examples brought up.

Please post the link to the TRS.

Do not think I saw these discussed so I’ll bring them up here

From the Hazbin Hotel YMMV

-The Charlie/Alastor (or Charlastor) ship, which features potential Angel/Devil Shipping and Corrupt the Cutie elements, has greatly taken off.

-Despite Arackniss (Angel Dust's older brother) not even appearing on the show yet, many fans have taken to shipping him with Sir Pentious due to their similar color schemes.

-Despite the No Yay mentioned below, Angel Dust/Husk is a very popular ship that gets a lot of fan art on the subreddit.

[down] I don’t know what you mean, the link to the page?

[up][up]I think a similar entry to the first one has been brought up before and it’s that it doesn’t count because Charlie’s most popular ship is still her canon one with Vaggie. Not sure about the other two. Do they have a canon love interest?

[up] no, Husk, Angel and Pentious are not hitched canonically with anyone and Arackniss has never showed up proper

If they don't have a canon love interest then they can't be this. Cut away.

Just cut the other two from the YMMV page, but tbh, I am not sure if I agree that Chaggie is more popular than Charlastor.

[up][up][up] Do you have a link to where it was discussed in the thread?

Okay so the TRS is closed. Here's is what decided.

  1. A creator preferred pairing is either an Official Couple, a Maybe Ever After, or by Word of God.

  2. Multiple ships are allowed, but they all have to be more popular. Also it was agreed upon to not go to crazy with multiple ones.

  3. Historical and crossover pairing are allowed.

So everyone ready to get back to business.

[up] I don't know the show, but AO3 seems to greatly favor the canon one, and so does most of the other fan like discussion communities I have seen. Not saying it doesn't count, as again I have not seen the show, but that is a bad sign. It needs to be more popular somewhere, and I personally usually go for consistency if I can.

And for clearance, a Maybe Ever After is 'An ending to a Romance rc that only leaves a hint that the characters may become a romantic couple or not."

Okay to get us started. From Live-Action Films:

  • Ghostbusters (2016): Jillian Holtzmann/Erin Gilbert is by far the most popular pairing from the film. This is partly thanks to a combination of the "Rhythm of the Night" sequence, a deleted scene in which Holtzmann declares she and Erin are dating, and Holtzmann being the films Breakout Character while Erin is the lead. Holtzmann's actress Kate McKinnon has also openly described her as flirting with Erin in their first meeting.

Okay it's been awhile since I have seen the movie, but I don't remember either having a creator preferred pairing. If had to make an argument, they are probably the closest either has to a creator preferred one.

Now that we've settled the description/definition problem, we should probably do a sweep of the on-page examples to make sure they all fit. I'll start with Western Animation later today. I do have question: if I'm unfamiliar with a given work, but the entry doesn't mention a creator-preferred couple, should I delete or just comment it out?

I can do the Live Action films and tv ones in a bit. The big pains are going to be Anime & Manga and Comic Book ones.

[up] I mean if you can easily find out I don't think so, but if you can't better safe than sorry. So comment it out.

I mean Erin was definitely into Kevin, but that never went anywhere though. Not sure how you guys want to play that in that case.

Yeah, but with our new definition listed above. I don't think her and Kevin count as creator preferred. It goes nowhere official, has no maybe they will down the line, and the creators have voiced more support for her and Holtzmann.

[up][up][up][up]I would say either try to look it up or take it to the clean-up thread? Though if there's a lot you don't know, I can understand not wanting to take all of them.

From Poison Ivy Comics:

Right away we run into a problem, she is not nearly popular enough to ship for Batman. Another problem, Harley and her are canon, popular, but canon. I mean they weren't always, but Ivy doesn't have much else in the way of love interests other then Harley.

[up]Yeah, sounds like you should just toss it then. Granted, there can be different creator preferred couples depending on the run, but if she doesn't have another Love Interest, then I guess it should count?

Also, I was going to go clean up some Yu-Gi-Oh! entries from FanPreferredCouple.Anime And Manga that I'd plan to get to once we finished up with this trope at TRS only to notice someone had already deleted them all. Granted, while a lot of them didn't even fit the old definition let alone the new one, I do think there were a few that could've stayed with a rewrite. Would it be cool if I put some of them back? One of them was technically written by me (though I didn't put it on the main page, someone else copied it over from one of the show's YMMV pages), so I don't know if that would count as an Edit War or not.

[up] What were said entries?

Also looking through the Live-Action Films page there is these entries?

  • DC Extended Universe:
    • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: Despite Clark Kent being in a loving relationship with Lois Lane, most fanfiction about the film instead pair him up with rival turned ally Bruce Wayne. This is due to the Foe Yay between them throughout the films, as well as the fact that the pairing already being popular in the comics.
    • This only grew after Justice League (2017), where Bruce spends much of the movie trying to revive Clark and ranking up the Ho Yay between the two. They have the most fanfictions of any pairing in the DCEU tag on Archive of Our Own. Zack Snyder's Justice League adds Bruce's pleading with Clark when the latter has gone berserk, it makes him sound positively broken-hearted.

Now this counts. Clark has a canon love interest, but it's far more popular to ship him with Bruce. The thing is this doesn't need to be two entries. It's one ship across 2 (3) films, and it could just be one. Now I would normally just combine them, but this was originally one entry. It was done by me, and it wasn't very good originally. Someone else turned it into two, and I don't think I can do anything without it being an Edit War.

These were the ones I thought could be kept with rewrites, at least:

  • Puzzleshipping (Yugi/Atem) is probably the most well-known pairing the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise ever had. In the Japanese version, they even have Affectionate Nickname for the other ("Mou Hitori no Boku/The other me" for Yami/Atem and "Aibou/Partner" for Yugi.) And the two can't seem to stop thinking about the other, and there are just so many subtexts in both the manga and anime, which only makes the fans more excited. Puzzleshipping is pretty much considered canon by most fans.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! GX has a somewhat unusual case. The Western fandom is neatly split between Juudai/Asuka and Juudai/Johan, but the Japanese fandom seems perfectly happy to ship the Official Couple, Juudai/Yubel. This could possibly be attributed to the dub changing Yubel from a scary-but-somewhat-sympathetic Stalker with a Crush into an absolutely terrifying child-like psychopath and cutting out Season 4 (where they had their Heel–Face Turn), causing them to be much less liked in the West. That said, Juudai/Yubel has picked up a fair bit of steam lately, owing to just how unusual it is as an Official Couple. A few go with the route that, given the circumstances of their relationship, Yubel's willing to share.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL is also a hotbed of these. Yuma/Astral is essentially the reincarnation of Puzzleshipping, and is similarly often regarded as one Word of Gay away from canonicity. Of the top 25 most-favorited ZEXAL fics on FFN, fourteen are some stripe of Yuma/Astral as of this writing.
  • While Takeru gets teased with his Childhood Friend Kiku, especially in the last episode, his most popular pairing is with Yusaku, likely because he has quite a bit of Ho Yay with him while Kiku only appears in a couple of episodes.

The last one was technically written by me. I think they all need to be rewritten to a certain extent to show how they fit under the new definition, but I think these specific deleted entries do qualify.

Wait isn't Yugi/Atem like one of the easiest examples in the fandom? It's been awhile since I saw the original, but Yugi had a Maybe Ever After with that one girl right? I can't really comment on the others.
