Brought up in the Trope Repair Shop
, we need to take out the in-jokey Understatement references. People are using it to make any given example "witty" rather than actually using the trope.
It's is extremely excessive, by early calculations there is a 95% misuse rate in that regard. But don't worry, the actual number to fix seems to be less than 9,000 (about 8700).

{Note 5: as of 8:58 am on October 10, there were 729 wicks remaining. The entire list had been scrubbed. 111 of that 729 are those that a software glitch counts even though the page it's supposedly on no longer exists.}
{Note 6: Fast Eddie has modified the wick counter so that it no longer counts the dead namespaces "JBM" or "Crowning *". This killed off 75 of the phantom wicks remaining, for a final tally of 655 good wicks remaining of 8700+ original wicks}

Today's update is smaller, though I'm going to note another iffy call that I'm leaning towards keep - on WebVideo.Vinesauce Tomodachi Life, the pothole seems to be linking to a paraphrasing of what a character said. I don't have time to track down how accurate that is at this time, but the fact that it does apparently get used in said web video (even if the original words aren't duplicated one-for-one here) has me leaning towards keeping it.
Another that I left in was for WebVideo.The Dom Reviews... this was a tricky one, because the review itself was reacting to understatement (and underlining just how understated it was) in a movie. I figure that it counts under Discussed Trope.
Anyhow, cleared through WebVideo.Sword Art Online Abridged. Next is WebVideo.Stuart Ashen.

Was busy for a bit there (lots of personal circumstances, including a jury duty stint), but back on this.
I ended up zapping both of those question marks. That was not a quote from Eight Legged Freaks that I could find (plus, honestly, Captain Obvious was a better fit), and that was not an In-Universe quote for the other.

Should we be fixing Blatant Lies and Sarcasm Mode misuse as well? They're usually hand-in-hand with Understatement misuse.

You're right about that, but I think those tropes might need their own cleanup threads. The misuse is really out of hand.

Because the trope isn't designed to be a pothole magnet for tropers to make jokes about, which is why it has a cleanup thread in the first place. The potholes are misuse.
Anyway, please stop bumping threads just to complain about the TRS / cleanup effort. It's fine if you have legitimate arguments, but disagreeing in general won't convince us to stop a TRS effort and definitely won't convince us to stop a decade-old project like this one. All it does is derail things.

Mate, this project is literally a decade old, so the decision has been made years ago to clean the wicks up. In that case, the potholes are designated misuse, witty or not.
