Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

     Eddie's old post
Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

[up] - Could do by Element or something, instead of Alphabetical sorting.

That'd be best, if the game sorts by Element instead of name, by default.

But never played, so I dunno.

[up] Sorry for the late reply! Sorting by Element would be difficult since some characters have multiple elements / versions

A fellow troper named "lakingsif" also suggested that it could be split into 3, since splitting in half would still result to 2 long pages. (And yeah, on second thoughts, having 50 folders in one character page would make the page long, and the other character pages of the game had approximately 30 folders)

So these could be the possible divisions:

We'd still keep the upper part of the Granblue Fantasy Human Characters page though, as it will have the Shared Tropes folder and links to the sub-pages...

I've decided to use "Granblue Fantasy Humans" for the alphabetical splits because "Granblue Fantasy Human Characters" would be too long for page names.

Would these suggestions be okay?

Granblue Fantasy Humans sounds good.

Then turn Granblue Fantasy Human Characters into an index for those pages.

Now, the All-Star Cast page is over 500,000 html characters, but it isn't actually that long; it's just that most of the entries are very long lists of people who all have pages, rocketing the html characters even though none of the folders look long enough to have their own page. The longest folder is Live-Action Films, so I'll split that off, but it's an odd case we should probably keep an eye on.

If you're still around Dante Vin, I'm glad you could talk it out and sorry I wasn't in this thread the past few days, I was working other projects.

Regarding Characters.High School Dx D, since the High School DxD: Occult Research Club was getting too long, I split Issei Hyoudou's section off into a separate page, which can be found at High School Dx D Issei Hyoudou. Do you think Rias also needs to be split into its own page?

The page itself isn't too big (yet), but YMMV.Splatoon 2 has huuge entries for several tropes, especially this one

  • Growing the Beard: At launch, the game was criticized for not being particularly ambitious and doing little to differentiate itself from its predecessor. It didn't help that the game had numerous balance issues when it first launched, or that it carried over several annoyances from Splatoon 1, such as being unable to change your weapons and gear between matches without leaving the lobby. While there were modest new additions, such as the new Salmon Run game mode, new weapon types such as Dualies and Brellas, and a revamp of the ranking system, Salmon Run was only available at certain times (and never for very long), the new weapons added were by and large seen as underpowered and not worth using, and many competitive players took umbrage with the new ranking system, particularly with how it took a long string of good matches to go up a rank but only a few to be knocked down and how easy it was to make it to S+.

The lore too was seen as a disappointment, with the Squid Sisters Stories setting up expectations for a sweeping, dramatic, story-focused single-player campaign that ultimately turned out to be an Excuse Plot with relatively uninspired gameplay. Very little was done with Callie; despite her involvement in Squid Sisters Stories and the game's plot, she ultimately played a very minor role, appearing as glorified background scenery during the final boss fight, then disappearing forever unless the player re-fought the final battle despite allegedly being "safe and sound". Splatoon 2's equivalent of the Squid Sisters, Off the Hook, were also seen as underdeveloped, which was glaring considering one of their members is an Octoling and that the Squid Sisters themselves had some involvement in the first game's Hero Mode.

However, throughout the game's lifespan, balance patches smoothed out the game's issues. Dualies and Brellas eventually received some much-needed buffs and are now viewed as viable weapons in their own right. While Salmon Run still has the schedule aspect, it is open more frequently and for significantly longer. The 2.0.0 patch was seen as the moment the game started to differentiate itself significantly from its predecessor; it added in an entirely new game mode in Clam Blitz, new hairstyles and pants for Inklings to dress themselves in, even more new weapons, and new battle music, while also adding in quality-of-life features such as being able to change your weapons and gear between matches without leaving the lobby. 3.0.0 added in the all-new X Rank to accomodate the more competitive players, added in even more new music, and allowed players to interact with Callie in Octo Canyon after completing the game, giving her sorely-needed development and interactions with Marie. The 3.0.0 period was also when Octo Expansion was released, which was seen as a much more improved and ambitious single player campaign. It finally gave much needed development to Off the Hook, and allowed players to finally be able to play as Octolings, something that the playerbase demanded since the first game.

That could easily be shortened to something like:

  • Though initially seen as not doing much to differentiate itself from its predecessor, over the game's life it got some game-boosting upgrades. In particular, the 3.0.0 period brought in well-rounded aspects and some popular campaigns, making it independently popular.

Putting this here since it was suggested to me in the 1.8 thread:

Editing wiki pages above a certain size following the update appears to give me an HTTP 500 error, or it just puts me back on the edit page, even though they're not also giving a "too big and should split" warning.

They include Characters.Far Cry 5 and Characters.Twig.

EDIT: Unless you made a mistake with that markup I think the summoning tag is borked too.

Note: Far Cry 5 page is 250315 html characters, the Twig one is 321645.

I can also add that from looking at an html rendering of the pages, the "random page in this namespace function" is just... gone. Well, some of the display code remains, but the function is gone

~rmctagg09 OK, try editing the Twig page again now.

Well the summon tag still doesn't work, and neither does editing the Twig page, same issue as last time with the "&error=html_insert" attached to the URL when I try editing.

EDIT: I'm using Chrome Version 67.0.3396.99 on Windows 10, for reference.

Looks like anything above 300000 html characters doesn't accept new html characters (anything not plain text). And, after you've tried to add them it either edit locks or just won't let you save edits even if you've done nothing. We'll have to wait and see if there's a timer on that. Posting to the 1.8 thread.

We've been discussing whether some MCU character pages need a split, so I wanted to ask - is there any formal threshold in "ordinary" symbols without spaces after which a page is considered too long? Does a 100k-symbol page warrant a split? 150k? Also is there a threshold for a page being too short?

Sorry if it was asked before.

Edit: Two examples of "suspicious" pages: MCU: Criminals & Terrorists MCU: Asgard

Thank you. Another question: are subpages (i.e. A-D, E-F etc) allowed for character sheets or is this feature reserved for main pages only?

#1649: Jul 15th 2018 at 1:39:05 AM

We prefer to split by character type/group, and if one character is long enough to get their own page, but if there's no better way to split you might have to use A-Z.

Well, there are individual character pages that are more than 100k symbols long. I.e. Mass Effect - Commander Shepard, MCU: Loki. I understand that it is appropriate to split such pages by A-D etc?
