YMMV / X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse

Go To

  • Complete Monster (includes Prelude to Perdition tie-in comic): Apocalypse is a monstrous mutant who believes in survival of the fittest. Apocalypse is hired by the Genoshan government to be the overseer of the enslaved mutants of Genosha, to keep them in line, and to ensure they continue to labor for the benefit of the Genoshan government. Apocalypse has his own agenda and is kidnapping mutants in Genosha and experimenting on them, to see if any of them are worthy to be his new Horsemen, not caring about the pain and suffering he is inflicting on them.
  • Good Bad Bugs: In the battle against Omega Red, if you manage to place your character in front of the boss, his coils won't hurt you, and all you have to do is stand still and hit him slowly till he falls dead. See for yourself.
    • Also, if you manage to deliver the final blow to Magneto, and remain on one of the floating platforms at the same time, the game will never end, because your character has to be on the ground to trigger the explosion of Avalon.
  • That One Boss: Several candidates make this game suffer from the Easy Levels, Hard Bosses issue.
    • First we have Tusk of all people. Amazingly fast and with huge stamina: he likes to charge at you, if you try to attack him from above, he'll uppercut you; he can also summon his Tuskettes, which are fast and annoying, they don't deal damage per se, but they can immobilize you to let Tusk do their dirty work. There are two floating platforms that constantly rise and fall, making your movement even harder. Plus, you're standing on a conveyor belt that is surrounded by lava, if you fall in it, fortunately it doesn't mean instant death, but it deals a lot of damage. As he can't be put into hitstun, he can very easily counter your regular combo. One of the easier ways to beat him is knock him into the lava pits, which is easier said than done.
    • And later, we have Apocalypse. Constantly teleporting, sometimes he won't reappear at first, instead, he'll psych you and appear behind you, and use his drill to Combo you to death. And if you try to attack him from above, he'll cover himself with spikes, when he retracts them, he's wide open for a split second, but it's not so easy to find these spots.
    • Before the Grand Finale with Magneto we have two fights in the Danger Room against Omega Red and Juggernaut. The first jumps in the air and reappears in a random position, if you let him get too close, he'll Combo you to death with his coils, get too far away and he'll use his Life Drain attack. Button Mashing won't work sometimes to get free. He can't be put into hitstun, so regular combos won't work with him.
      • Juggernaut, The second Danger Room boss, is still worse. All of his attacks deal a lot of damage, he can very easily defeat you with only four hits. He'll charge at you with his shoulder, and if you let him get too close he'll either uppercut you, of grab you and slam you hard into the ground. Only combo finishers and special attacks put him into hitstun, but he's invincible while in this position.
    • Exodus, the miniboss of all the Avalon stages, can be this if you don't know how to deal with him. He's constantly teleporting, forcing you to predict where he's going to appear, attacks you with Eye Beams and a Diving Kick, but his worst attack is when he swoops down and catches you, then he takes you high above, and drops you to the ground. Sometimes he appears with his annoying Acolytes to assist him. You only have to take down half of his lifebar, but that's not worth the difficulty of the boss.
    • Some of the robot bosses in Avalon also have the potential to be That One Boss.
      • Gambit's boss is a machine that creates holographic copies of the other characters, and before you ask, you have to fight the copies directly, not the machine above. This machine controls the other characters as a master: As Cyclops, it'll constantly spam Optic Blasts that deals huge damage, and won't let you get close, if you try to jump on it, it'll kick you into the ground. As Wolverine, it'll try to jump on you, if you let it get too close, it'll Combo you with a Drill Claw, or Tornado Claw, and that really hurts. As Beast, it'll constantly jump on you, or charge at you; practically you have to predict what it's going to do next.
      • Cyclops's boss is a giant core surrounded by four rotating shields, you can only step on rotating platforms, because benath you there's a Bottomless Pit. Its only attack is a Plasma Cannon it fires from the core, sometimes the plasma balls collide with its own shields, others make it to you. So, you have to aim carefully at the core with Optic Blasts and avoid destroying the shields, otherwise the attacks of the boss will be more frequent and annoying.
      • Psylocke's boss is a huge rocket that is about to launch. The rocket doesn't attack, but when it starts moving, the screen starts scrolling down, which means you can still fall to your death. You only have a few platforms that are too far away from each other to jump, so, if at this point you still don't know to do air backflip kicks to keep Psylocke from falling, then you're screwed against this big guy.
    • Last, but not least, the final match against Magneto: with twice as much stamina as Exodus, it'll sure be a long, long fight. 90% of the time he'll be into his force field and there will be no way to get close to him. He might choose between summon four metal plates and throw them at you, and they certainly are very hard to dodge, or he can also throw an energy ball that drains your energy but is easier to deal with; after using any of these attacks his force field will disappear and he'll be wide open. You'll want to psych him into using his energy ball attack, dodge it, and give him your best shot, then get away. Rinse and Repeat till he's down for the count.
  • That One Level: Apocalypse stage. You start in a tunnel that is filling with lava. You have to overcome the obstacles along the way quickly, because the lava certainly means instant death. Later, you find a huge shaft that leads to Apocalypse's room, you have to make your way to the top as it fills with lava incredibly fast.
  • Unexpected Character: Psylocke may appear as this for those more familiar with the '90s cartoon. There were nine X-Men in that show, and Betsy wasn't one of them. Averted by the end, she's not so unexpected to those more familiar with the original comics, she was part of the team at some point.
