• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • A character named Gaga (though it's pronounced "guh-GAH").
  • J.R. talking about Scar from The Searchers, since Harvey Keitel went on to play Sport, specifically meant to be an Expy of Scar, in Taxi Driver.
• Moral Event Horizon:
  • The Girl's previous boyfriend already crossed it when he raped her.
  • J.R. crosses the line when the Girl reveals her rape backstory only for him to only care about how it affects him. He seems to have a Jerkass Realization by the end... only to turn around and state that he forgives her for being raped and then cruelly states that no one would want her and that she was a whore.
• Padding: After gaining some good reviews at film festivals in its initial cut under the title I Call First, a distributor offered Martin Scorsese a deal on one condition: he had to add an explicit sex scene. So Scorsese and Harvey Keitel flew to Amsterdam and shot an artsy fantasy sequence where J.R. and a woman make love, mostly nude, set to "The End". The style and tone clash with the rest of the film, Keitel is obviously a few years older than in the other scenes, and its placement is rather odd, coming in the middle of the scene where J.R. talks about "broads" versus "girls". Versions that circulated in The '80s and The '90s didn't include the new scene, but it's in the Scorsese-approved DVD print.
• Spiritual Successor: Mean Streets was initially conceived as a sequel to this film, and the links between them are obvious. Harvey Keitel's performances as J.R. here and Charlie in Mean Streets are nearly identical. The Little Italy milieu is portrayed similarly, with the guys hanging out in dingy clubs and goofing around. And the influence of I Vitelloni is very strong in both films. In fact, it's even stronger here.
• Values Resonance: The main male character is shown to be fully and without a doubt in the wrong for Slut-Shaming a rape victim. And remember, this movie was made in the 1960s.
• The Woobie: The Girl. She was raped by a previous boyfriend and when she reveals such a hard past to J.R., he only cares about how the rape makes him feel and them crosses the Moral Event Horizon when he states that she'll be Defiled Forever. The poor woman needs a hug.
