YMMV / The Many Secret Origins of Scootaloo

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: So... so many...
    • Every origin story features this, with Scootaloo being any of the following: A Burned Spy, The Last Daughter of Krypton, a giant chicken, A Time Traveler, The Angel Of Death, a human-turned-pony, a japanese superhero, a princess, and Princess Celestia in disguise.
    • Most of the characters from the show are given alternate interpretations:
      • Mrs. Cake is a Shipper.
      • Iron Will is The Rock meets Conan O'Brien. Of course, makes having a Scootaloo story pretty much the only deviation from his show portrayal.
      • Princess Cadence is suffering from PTSD which causes her to force ponies to love each other.
      • Also, and especially, we get an alternative interpretation of Fanon Scootaloo when we get the real story. Her quite normal existence of course turns the outlandish stories Twilight's been given so far on their heads, of course, but Fanon considers her lack of visible parents indicative of a lack of any parents, and her lack of flight to be a disability - that bit eventually semi-confirmed in "Flight to the Finish." Here? Instead of Scoots being abused or a homeless orphan, she has a decent home, where her parents are quite alive and quite sweet. They live on the edge of town and that's why you don't see them turning up at school or before/after Cutie Mark Crusader adventures. Even the usual flight angst is averted: Her mom is a pegasus and her dad is an earth pony, and Scootaloo sees herself not as a disabled pegasus, but as an earth pony with the added bonus of little wings which she can use to propel her scooter faster and even hover a little. That doctor's office scene you've seen a million times in fanfic and fanart where Scootaloo is wailing in anguish as she is given the news that she'll never fly? Impossible here.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: It's all but stated in the author's titular chapter that this is the reason why Derpy and Dinky made a reappearance.
  • Fanon: Ever since the Fluttershy chapter, some have adopted Fluttershy being the author of Daring Do as their headcanon.
    • After it was revealed that Daring Do is real and just writing the stories based on her adventures plenty of people commented that this story's idea for Daring Do makes more sense than the canon.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Some may be a little put off by Scootaloo's complete indifference about not being able to fly at the end of the story, after watching "Flight to the Finish".
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The Newhart-style ending with an infant Twilight hugging a Scootaloo doll is even better upon reading the sequel, Crisis Of Infinite Twilights, where Baby Twilight joins the cast.
    • The Noodle Incident about what Twilight does with a brownie, after "Twilight Time" showed that she has Jabba Table Manners with fast food.
    • The fic has a Take That! at Twilight, as every pony within three blocks shouts "NO THEY DON'T!" at Bon Bon's claim that vampires sparkle in the sun. The sequel features a Twilight who acts like Bella Swan, ie Twilight Twilight.
    • At least two of the stories about Scootaloo (the Cakes' and Iron Will's, to be specific) feature Scootaloo being raised by a lesbian couple. Now, with the release of the chapter book Ponyville Mysteries: Riddle of the Rusty Horseshoe and The Reveal in it that Scootaloo is being raised by her aunt and her marefriend, these stories become much funnier.
    • The reveal that Scootaloo's parents are a pegasus mare and an earth pony stallion. The Last Crusade, where we meet her parents, reveals that defender2222 was correct on that mark
      • The fact that defender2222 thought Scootaloo's parents would be boring when in fact they are characters who would have easily fit into an insane origin story
  • Shallow Parody: After the first few chapters, most of the origins are essentially inserting Scootaloo as the heroine or one of the main characters of a popular franchise, with some small commentary on it, and very few changes.
  • The Woobie: Twilight, especially in some of the later chapters when the stories have traumatised her to the point that her reaction to an incoming story is to hide in a closet.
    • Also applies to the last chapter when she cries upon realising that even Princess Celestia was messing with her, just in a much more elaborate fashion that everypony else.
