YMMV / Somebody I Used to Know

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Sean. Is he a Nice Guy who truly loves and wants the best for Ally and Cassidy or just an Entitled Bastard who tries to make them someone they're not, all so that they can live up to his expectations without taking into account their needs?
    • Ally is no better either. Is she a funny yet flawed individual who's just confused about what she's going to do with her life or simply an irredemable Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who's trying to stop her ex's wedding for selfish reasons and keeps hurting people without a care for their feelings, something that Sean chided her for?
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: Alison Brie's nude scenes very quickly became the most popular scenes in the film. To add hilarity in this, Brie, in an attempt to calm her husband's nerves ahead of the film's premiere, ran totally naked through the halls of a hotel she and Dave were staying at and knocked on their room door to surprise him. She greeted him saying "Happy premiere night!" while jumping multiple times. Laughing, Dave's response was "Get out of the hall", to which Brie responded "I've done three laps already!". Brie even captured the whole thing on video and posted a censored version of it on her Instagram account. It has to be seen to be believed.
  • Die for Our Ship: Sean, for obvious reasons, becomes a target of this to Ally/Cassidy shippers.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Jeremy is beloved for his pop culture jokes.
    • His nephew Brad also counts for deviating attention from his tablet and chasing after Ally and Cassidy streaking in a golf camp. Sean even tells Ally that Brad took a liking of her because of it.
    • Ally's mother, Libby, is also admired by fans for her everlasting love and patience she has toward her daughter, no matter how many times Ally gives her empty promises of spending time with her. Her heart-to-heart to Ally is even more endearing to see. Points go to Julie Hagerty for taking the mother role seriously.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: A couple of viewers shipped Ally and Cassidy and wanted them to be a couple. What started as a subtle rivarly between these two women turning into an undeniable chemistry, especially because Ally saw much of her old self in her, (i.e. things they have in common, like their love for naturism) just gives them a good reason why Cassidy and Sean aren't a good match.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Admit it, you only watched this film because of the acting of Alison Brie and the charisma she puts into her role, as well as the directing of her husband Dave Franco.
    • Also seeing Brie reunited with her Community co-star, Danny Pudi.
  • Never Live It Down: No matter how sorry she is and how much she has matured, some viewers refuse to forgive Ally for almost ruining Sean and Cassidy's wedding through her manipulative tacticts, one of which includes meddling in the latter's personal life.
  • Why Would Anyone Take Him Back?: Viewers were disappointed with Sean and Cassidy getting back together after the huge argument they had the night before their wedding, which Sean's adoptive parents spent a lot of money for, and it only took an apology of his, as well as Ally admitting to her role in sabotating them by inviting Cassidy's parents over, for them to figure out their issues and Cassidy to change her mind about calling off the wedding. In short, Sean deserved to not get back with either woman if you take into account how his selfish actions affected them for the worse.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Sean easily comes off as a very loathsome individual very hard to root for due to being a lame boyfriend to Ally and Cassidy, as they pursued things they loved the most, only for Sean's attachment to Leavenworth and family plan to hold both of them back. Let's not also forget that Sean, after finding out that Ally unceremoniously arrived in town, purposefully sought her out and gave her false hope of a possible second shot at their relationship by hiding his engagement with Cassidy and taking her on a fun day all around the city, and ends the night when he kisses her, effectively cheating on his own fiancée with his ex. To put a nail on the coffin, after Ally announces that her cancelled reality show is getting picked up by another network, Sean doesn't take it well and has the nerve to accuse her of toying with his feelings when it was the other way around, refusing to take responsibility for his mistakes, something that Ally calls him out on. He also says that Ally is manipulative when it comes to her job as a TV producer and doesn't care about anyone but herself, which is not entirely wrong, but Sean still doesn't see how responsible he is for instigating the whole separate-ex-and-fiancée mess to begin with. Now who's the one caring only about himself? The fact that he gets back together with Cassidy despite the entire misunderstanding with who was responsible for inviting her parents against her wishes doesn't really help matters.
    • Ally is neither less nor more likeable as a character. While she's right in pointing out to Sean that it was his decision to seek her out at the bar while keeping his engagement with Cassidy and giving her false hope, she still tried to sabotage their wedding under the guise of voluntarily filming it and constantly ignored Benny's warnings not to screw up this special occasion for them. As if that wasn't bad enough, Ally went as far as to anonymously invite Cassidy's estranged homophobic parents to the wedding whom she wants nothing to do with, seeing this as her weak spot, and cowered herself by putting the blame on Sean knowing that he had insisted multiple times that Cassidy invite them, eventually causing Cassidy to call off the wedding. Even though in the end Ally regrets it and is Easily Forgiven, it was out of character for her to manipulate the poor Cassidy by prying into her personal life.
