YMMV / Justice League Dark

For the comics:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: This quote from issue 2 predates the "We live in a society" memes.
Xanadu: Look at them. They are mostly unhappy. They tend to live on the fringes of normal society.

For the animated film:

  • Complete Monster: Destiny is a malevolent sorcerer with a god complex. Creating a magical artifact called the Dreamstone, which would force its victims to live their worst nightmares, often driving them into a murderous rage, Destiny terrorized the land until he was defeated by Merlin and the demon Etrigan, though not before mortally wounding knight Jason Blood, necessitating his merging with Etrigan to save his life. Centuries later, Destiny's spirit would manipulate the dying Ritchie Simpson into spreading the Dreamstone's magic across the world, causing casualties on a global scale, while feeding off the negative energy of the stone's victims. Finally returning to the physical world upon the Dreamstone being united, Destiny possesses Ritchie's body and sets off to continue his global conquest, wreaking havoc in a nearby city and mortally wounding Jason Blood upon his defeat.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Ritchie Simpson. Seriously, he commits very nasty actions against the House of Mystery and the other heroes, but his actions are due to the fact that he is dying because of Constantine's actions in the past, and he is only being used by Destiny as his body's vessel.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Lots of fans watched the film mainly because it has Matt Ryan reprising his role as Constantine, and he practically steals the film from the other characters.
  • Nausea Fuel: Ritchie conjures a literal shit monster to attack the heroes as they search for clues in a hospital.
  • So Okay, It's Average: It's generally agreed that the movie is entertaining, but doesn't break any ground compared to previous DC animated features and maintains some of its predecessors' problems; such as introducing several new characters whose personalities and motivations are not elaborated upon, and excessively focusing on Batman, to the detriment of the remaining Justice Leaguers. It consistently hogs the middle spot in fans' "Best DCAMU films" ranking lists.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The entire Justice League gets hit with this, especially since two new members (Martian Manhunter and Hawkman) make their debut here. Only three members besides Batman get anything more than sitting around a table discussing the current crisis and those are little more than window dressing. Especially jarring because four members of the league have abilities that could be useful against said crisis and have had a lack of screen time in these films:
    • With Wonder Woman leading the Justice League Dark in James Tynion's run the year after, she would've been a good fit to be the League's representative in this movie instead of Batman, who's already had a lot of movies at this point.
    • Martian Manhunter and Hawkman have powers that are pitch perfect for fighting a mystic force that drives people insane with nightmare visions (Manhunter is psychic and Hawkman uses Nth metal that has Anti-Magic properties) which could have been used to showcase their usefulness to the League.
    • Aquaman makes his second appearance in this universe and could have had a chance to demonstrate how far he's come with his powers now that he has the Trident.
    • Shazam is name dropped by Wonder Woman but doesn't even appear despite being a champion of magic.
  • Unexpected Character: The true villain, Doctor Destiny. While he has fought the Justice League Dark in the comics, he is usually more associated with the traditional League.
