YMMV / Bust a Groove

Go To

  • Awesome Music: This series is particularly notable for its soundtrack, and is usually the first thing that comes to mind whenever the games are mentioned.
  • Broken Base: Some liked Shorty's new look in Bust a Groove 2, some didn't. Same with Kitty-N's new look and dance moves.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The game attempts to invoke this in Heat's ending in the Japanese version of Bust a Groove 2, though most audiences found it in bad taste:
James Suneoka: What do you need to get The Beatles back together again? Three more bullets!
  • Good Bad Bugs: During Robo-Z Gold's level in 2, his head is constantly damaged and smoking due to being attacked by the military while dancing. Due to an oversight, his head is inexplicably always exploding in other levels once you unlock him as well, even though nobody is actually attacking him.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Shorty's backstory in Bust a Groove 2, which explains how she and Columbo first met.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Considering the fact that Squaresoft merged with Enix, was it really any wonder that a series of rhythm mini games made it into Kingdom Hearts II?
  • Ho Yay: For some reason, some fans seem to like the Heat/Strike pairing (or “Heatstroke”, if you will).
  • Moe: Shorty is just the cutest little girl you'll ever see dancing and she gets even cuter when Columbo hops out to dance alongside her!
  • Signature Song: The English version of Kitty-N's song, because of its catchiness, and because of Maximilian_Dood's Bio Freaks Boss Rage.
  • That One Level: Iga Base in Dance Summit. Especially if it's your first time playing.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: How some fans felt about Dance Summit 2001.
    • Not too many people were pleased about some of the changes in Bust a Groove 2, either. Most infamous of these was Shorty's new look and dance moves. Some even stated that the songs weren't as memorable as those from the previous game.
  • Woolseyism: In the first game, rather than recording an English lyrics version of Blue Knife, the song was replaced completely with a remix called Bust A Groove that managed to be just as catchy as Blue Knife and just as popular as the other songs.
    • Although a lot of the changes made to soften the game for Western audiences were met with They Changed It, Now It Sucks! reactions, the tweaks made to Hamm (Namely toning down the dark-skinned blond look and removing his Gag Lips) ended up being widely accepted by the fandom and the majority of fanart now tends to reflect his Western look instead of his original. The original falling under Unfortunate Implications even back then had to have helped.
