Trivia / The Garfield Show

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • Frank Welker voices the majority of the extras and secondary characters. In fact, if there's any minor character with a speaking role you can expect them to be voiced by Frank 90% of the time.
    • In "High Scale", Garfield is terrorized in a nightmare by a talking scale (also voiced by Frank Welker); over the course of the dream, the scale slowly changes its shrill voice until it winds up with Frank Welker's Dr. Claw/Soundwave voice.
    • Gregg Berger and Jason Marsden also do several voices on the show.
  • Adored by the Network: The show fell into this after Boomerang's USA rebrand in 2015, airing as many as eight times a day, more than any other show, with heavy promotion.
    • On the UK feed of the same network, the show used to frequently air overnight to fulfill European content quotas alongside LazyTown.
  • Consolation Award: June Foray won her only competitive Emmy for appearing on this show. She was a guest star. On one episode. And she'd never even been nominated before then - keep in mind that for most of her life the Emmys didn't even have a voice-acting category. So many people are seeing the Garfield win as a consolation prize for her entire legendary career.note
  • Deleted Role: "Down on the Farm" was originally going to feature a cameo by Orson Pig and even went so far as to construct a computer-generated model of Orson and having Gregg Berger reprise his role as the character from Garfield and Friends, but international laws prohibiting cartoons from depicting talking pigs nixed the planned cameo.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • By all accounts, apparently only the first season was ever released on video in America. For a while, Netflix only had the first two seasons, but they've since added the third and fourth seasons, leaving season 5 as the one season that was hard to find in English. Additionally, the official YouTube channel uploads full episodes from various seasons.
    • The YouTube channel nie Ji has uploaded every episode of the series except for the English version of the "Rodent Rebellion" special that comprised the entirety of season 5. That special was later uploaded on the show's YouTube channel.
  • Non-Singing Voice: Jon Barnard occasionally sang for Garfield.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Frank Welker (who, rather expectedly, had also appeared on Garfield and Friends) took over as Garfield after the death of original voice actor Lorenzo Music. Also, Wally Wingert replaced Thom Huge as Jon, and Jason Marsden took over from Desiree Goyette as Nermal. Should be noted that although they had previously voiced their characters in Garfield Gets Real, this still counts as an example, as this was the first regular appearance of these characters on television since Garfield and Friends had ended.
    • Nathan and his mother were respectively voiced by Melissa Disney and Julie Payne in "Neighbor Nathan", and Grey DeLisle replaced both of them in their appearances beginning in season 2.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Jason Marsden was a huge fan of Garfield as a child, and he was excited to be cast as Nermal for the series. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, he describes how being part of the crew was a dream come true for him.
  • Recycled Set: Entire environments are often recycled for different locations quite often.
  • Role Reprise:
    • From Garfield and Friends (and the various specials):
      • Technically, Frank Welker as Garfield, as he was Lorenzo Music's understudy.
      • Gregg Berger reprises his roles as Odie and Herman Post.
      • Julie Payne reprises Liz and Jon's mother.
      • David L. Lander returns as Doc Boy, a role he played in A Garfield Christmas Special in 1987.
    • From Garfield Gets Real and the subsequent direct-to-video sequels:
      • Frank Welker returns as Garfield himself.
      • Wally Wingert as Jon.
      • Jason Marsden as Nermal.
      • Audrey Wasilewski as Arlene.
    • In the Latin American Spanish dub, Garfield is voiced by Sandro Larenas, Garfield's voice actor from the original Chilean dub of Garfield and Friends, despite the dub of this series was done in Mexico.
    • In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, Nermal is voiced by Alexandre Moreno, Nermal's voice actor from the Brazilian Portuguese dub of the first live-action movie.
  • Screwed by the Network: Cartoon Network's treatment of this show was hit-or-miss. The first season aired new episodes at 10:30AM on weekdays, a time when the target audience would be at school, said new episodes were constantly preempted by CN's morning movie airings, and it was given little, if any, advertising. They wouldn't get the second season until over a year later, and by that point the first season had been reran to exhaustion. However, the second season was given a much nicer 5PM slot, but with the same minuscule promotion. It was later moved to 2PM without very much advance warning, but this was during the summer, when everyone was out of school. The third season was given the same treatment the first season got, with no advertising and a weekday slot when the target audience would be at school (10:00AM). The network would eventually drop it a few years later, and it was banished to Boomerang, a channel that is available in much less households than its parent network is. Ironically enough, though, the show actually became Adored by the Network on Boomerang, as mentioned above.
  • What Could Have Been: A voiced cameo by Orson Pig was written in at one point, and even recorded by his original voice actor, Gregg Berger. However, the studio wouldn't let them include it in the episode, due to international laws (some countries do not allow a talking pig to be showcased, specifically Malaysia).
