Tear Jerker / The Garfield Show

Go To

  • While he may deserve it half the time, you can't help but feel sorry for Garfield when he gets punished for something he didn't actually do.
    • The events of "King Nermal" as things go From Bad to Worse for Garfield and Odie, first resulting in them getting kicked out in the rain, and then winding up in full body casts at the end of the episode. The fact Nermal stays even longer doesn't help. While unable to see their faces, it's clear, given all the crud Nermal put them through for almost two weeks, neither of them are really happy. At that point, you can't really blame Garfield for trying to mail Nermal to Abu Dhabi every chance he gets.
  • "Desperately Seeking Pookie". The scene where Hercules breaks down in tears when he has to part with Garfield's teddy bear. Even though he stole it, the scene is enough to qualify poor Hercules as a Jerkass Woobie and makes the viewer want to hug him. Luckily Garfield decides to Throw the Dog a Bone, and donates his numerous failed replacements for Pookie.
  • "Long Lost Lyman: Part Four", where Odie had to part ways with Jon and Garfield after reuniting with Lyman. The part where a downhearted Garfield reminisces the times he had with Odie really sells it. Thankfully, Lyman decides that Odie should live with Jon.
Garfield: Odie? I don't know any "Odie"...
  • Even in spite of grabbing more negative characteristics here you can't help but feel sorry for Jon in "Online Arbuckle" when everyone which includes his girlfriend (though she does feel bad for him later) laughs at him because Garfield records and sets up things to go wrong for him. Fortunately, Garfield realizes his mistake and redirects all of Jon's "fame" to someone much more deserving.
  • "World Without Me" is a tearjerker for the entire episode. Garfield is depressed due to his boring and unexciting life and thinks of himself as useless, a feeling that is made worse when he meets the leprechaun Paddy, visits a parallel universe in which he's not present and sees that his friends are apparently having better lives without him: Jon now lives in a luxurious mansion since he didn't had to feed him, Odie now has a butler to play catch with, and Arlene and Bruno are in a happy relationship. Since the Space Lasagna are invading Earth, Garfield is made visible to defeat them, but after saving this alternative universe, he's still depressed, and Paddy shows him how everyone is faring without him: Jon and Odie feel lonely and both want a cat, one that is smart and funny, Arlene has broken with Bruno because she feels that he's not the right boyfriend for her, wanting someone that has a good sense of humour and likes lasagna, and Vito's pizzeria has gone bankrupt because Garfield, the regular customer that orders 50 pizzas a week, does not exist in this universe. He only realizes how much he matters for everyone when Paddy makes him realise that he is important for his fans, the watchers, who would be sad and bored from his absense, with a flickering TV screen as the background.
  • Most of “Parrot Blues” is rather sad as we follow Paxton the parrot who not only tends to insult everyone but he also has a rather pessimistic viewpoint on life. However, the real tearjerker starts when Paxton decides to show Jon and Garfelid why he acts like this. We don’t see what was on the screen but judging from Garfield and Jon’s reactions, it must have been bad. And then Paxton escapes into the city to talk about everything that is wrong with the world. (Well and also insult Nermal.)
    • Then once Garfield catches him, he and Jon take Paxton to Dr.Whipple in hopes that he can help Paxton. A few minutes later, Whipple comes out a sobbing mess and is downright begging Jon to take Paxton back proclaiming that he can’t even help himself.
    • While the return of Odie is a very sweet moment, what proceeds it is most certainly not as Paxton continues to speak about how the world is awful. Garfield himself even states that no amount of lasagna can cheer him up now. Luckily, Odie returns just in time.
