The series

  • Ability over Appearance: Briggs was originally visualized by the creator as Native American, and according to Jeff Eastin, there were several bits in the original script about his "long, flowing Comanche hair." However, halfway through Sunjata's audition, he couldn't picture anyone else but him as Briggs.
  • Actor Allusion: Mike tells Abby that he's a pilot. Aaron Tveit originated the role of Frank Abegnale Jr. in the Broadway musical adaptation of Catch Me If You Can, where one of his false identities is as a pilot.
  • California Doubling: A rather odd inversion. The show takes place in Southern California, and the pilot was filmed there, but the remainder of the show is filmed in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
  • Fake Nationality: Averted. Despite Vanessa Ferlito's tendency to frequently play Latinos, she's playing an Italian for a change.

The album

  • Career Resurrection: Despite the controversy surrounding the production, it revived Paul Simon's career.
  • Corpsing: Paul keeps a straight, even bored, expression throughout the music video for "You Can Call Me Al", except when he cracks a grin when Chevy blows a trumpet right in his face.
  • Genre-Killer: The controversy over the album's production led artists to shy away from the worldbeat-inflected rock popularized in the '80s by Peter Gabriel and Talking Heads in its aftermath.
