Trivia / Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock

Go To

  • Acting for Two: This now applies to scenes featuring Gobo and Sprocket, since John Tartaglia performs them both. Likewise, Karen Prell in scenes featuring Red and Icy Joe, and as in the original show, Dave Goelz in scenes featuring Boober and Traveling Matt or World's Oldest Fraggle (though he now only voices those characters, as Philo and Large Marvin have both been recast).
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: Patti LaBelle, Kenan Thompson, Daveed Diggs, Cynthia Erivo, and Ed Helms all guest-star in the first season. Catherine O'Hara, Ariana DeBose, Brett Goldstein, and Adam Lambert are all on board for season two, along with Diggs returning as Jamdolin.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Like the old show, several obviously male Doozers (with mustaches and everything) are performed and voiced by women.
  • Distanced from Current Events: In the original show, Boober was a hypochondriac who was constantly obsessed with germs and illness. In light of world events, the first season of the reboot downplays this and instead has him worry about dirt and stains. It's less notable than you might think because Boober was always afraid of anything and everything, and that hasn't changed at all in this series. Come season 2, the pandemic becoming less of a concern results in Boober becoming terrified of germs again.
  • Only So Many Canadian Actors: A tradition carried over from the original, as both were produced on Canadian soil. In addition to Frank Meschkuleit (best known for Toopy and Binoo) returning, Jordan Lockhart (the new Wembley) is known for performing the title character in the TVOntario shows Hi Opie! and Opie's Home.
  • In Memoriam: The first episode of season two, "The Great Wind", was dedicated to Philip Balsam, one of the two main songwriters on the original Fraggle Rock (the other being Dennis Lee).
  • The Other Darrin: Not surprising since it's decades between the two shows, but most of the characters have been recast since the original series. There are a few exceptions: Red is still performed by Karen Prell and Dave Goelz still voices Boober, Travelling Matt and the World's Oldest Fraggle (though his characters are puppeteered by other performers, including Frank Meschkuleit and Kevin Clash, because COVID restrictions kept him from being physically on the set).
    • Wembley was recast with Jordan Lockhart for this series, due to Frankie Cordero, who had performed the character in Rock On!, being unable to participate due to being busy with Donkey Hodie.
  • Role Reprise: Of the main Fraggles, Karen Prell (Red) and Dave Goelz (Boober & Uncle Matt) are the only performers from the '80s series to reprise their roles in this series, although Frank Meschkuleit (who puppeteers most of Goelz's characters) did participate in the original series. John Tartaglia (Gobo) and Donna Kimball (Mokey) do reprise their roles from Rock On!; Tartaglia has been performing Gobo since 2013, a year after the original performer, Jerry Nelson, passed away.
