- Market-Based Title: The original release and the Game Boy Color re-release were titled Dragon Warrior due to TSR holding the trademark to Dragon Quest. Since Square Enix has subsequently acquired the trademark from them, any future release will bear the DQ name.
- Remade for the Export: The North American version of the game received a graphical facelift as well as a battery-backed save instead of a 20-character long password system used in the Japanese version.
- Trope Namers:
- Urban Legend of Zelda: A rumor persists that the "Dragonlord's true form" twist was actually a Woolseyism done for the North American version. The rumor goes that in Japanese, he allegedly has his pet dragon come to avenge his master. Enix supposedly liked the North American change better - so they incorporated it into the remakes. This, however, is untrue. The original Famicom version states "りゅうおうが しょうたいを あらわした！"- which translates roughly to "The dragon lord has revealed his true form". No version of the game has ever stated anything about a pet.
- What Could Have Been: The first game would have featured multiple player characters to choose from, but the idea was scrapped due to hardware limitations.
