Trivia / Brittany Murphy

Go To

  • Acting for Two: On King of the Hill, she voiced both Luanne Platter and Joseph Gribble before he hit puberty (after which he was then voiced by her Clueless co-star Breckin Meyer).
  • Actor-Inspired Element: While on Uptown Girls, it was the production design team's idea to have Molly wear a lampshade as a head accessory, it was Brittany's to scrunch it up and wear it as a beret.
  • The Cast Show Off: It wasn't widely known, but Brittany was also a trained singer, had briefly been in a band, and had hopes to perform on Broadway. She got to demonstrate her singing in Happy Feet.
  • Dawson Casting:
    • Just about in Clueless. She turned eighteen during production.
    • In The Devil's Arithmetic, her character in the book was twelve. Even with the film giving Rivka an Age Lift (she's implied to be sixteen), Brittany was twenty-two.
    • The same year she played a teen in Girl, Interrupted.
    • In Cherry Falls, she was twenty-three.
  • Dye Hard: Naturally brunette, she became best known as a blonde in the 2000s.
  • Enforced Method Acting: She and Ashton Kutcher improvised an argument before filming the scene in Just Married where Tom and Sarah are trapped in the snow - to allow them to get through the scene without Corpsing.
  • Fake Nationality: She played a World War II era Polish Jew in The Devil's Arithmetic.
  • Playing Against Type: Around the time she was cast in 8 Mile, she noted that she'd only ever been selected to play characters who were cute or crazy. Alex on the other hand was a sensual independent woman, and her first proper love interest role.
  • Romance on the Set:
    • She dated Eminem while filming 8 Mile.
    • She and Ashton Kutcher on the set of Just Married.
  • Star-Making Role: Clueless was her first major role, but it was arguably 8 Mile that made her a leading lady.
  • Throw It In!: There was no direction on how to say the line "I'll never tell" in the script for Don't Say a Word. Brittany decided to deliver it in a sing-song voice.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • She was cast in a biopic of Janis Joplin, a role she was extremely excited about. The production fell through however and was never picked up again.
    • She replaced Leelee Sobieski in Girl, Interrupted.
