Trivia / Alice Through the Looking Glass

  • Billing Displacement: In keeping with the first film, star Mia Wasikowska takes third billing behind Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway.
  • Breakaway Pop Hit: "Just Like Fire" by P!nk was a #1 hit on AC radio, while its parent movie flopped.
  • B-Team Sequel: Tim Burton stepped down as director, though he still produced. James Bobin took over.
  • Character Outlives Actor: Although Jabberwocky appears briefly, he doesn't say a word, owing to the death of Christopher Lee. Also, Dodo is absent, due to Michael Gough's passing.
  • In Memoriam: The film is dedicated "to our friend Alan Rickman."
  • Mythology Gag: The classic Jefferson Airplane song, White Rabbit, performed by P!nk with the film's trailers (although not in the film itself) is this trope. The original song — inspired by and a homage to Lewis Carroll's Alice books, of course — is regarded as the signature song of the Psychedelic Era. That period is credited with helping Disney's 1951 animated Alice in Wonderland be rediscovered and greatly increase in popularity, nearly two decades after the film's lackluster box office and critical reception on its original release.
  • Sequel Gap: Six years between Alice in Wonderland (2010) and this film.
  • Show Accuracy/Toy Accuracy: For the most part, the licensed dolls for the movie are pretty good, but the Disney Store Iracebeth dolls have notably normal-sized heads. It's possible the dolls were based on pre-production shots before CGI was used to enlarge her head, but it's still fairly obvious that it doesn't match up.
  • Star-Derailing Role: This film was the last straw in a series of flops for Depp. The film’s failure, paired with his domestic abuse scandal and divorce from Amber Heard, were the major reasons Depp disappeared from the Hollywood scene by the early 2020’s.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Originally Wilkins was meant to be voiced by Toby Jones, but was voiced by Muppets alumnus Matt Vogel in the final film.
    • Mark Rylance was originally cast as Zanik Hightopp, but was later replaced by Rhys Ifans.
