Tear Jerker / Sonic Origins (Ri2)

Go To

  • The realization that the families of the other personnel on-board the ARK suffered the same fate as Gerald or Maria, but were given no closure. Shadow vows to find them to set things right.
  • Amy's curse. It turns her into The Scrappy in matters of love and whenever there would be hope for Character Rerailment, it would turn her into a delusional nutcase that rivals the Mad Love of Harley Quinn. If this situation wasn't played for laughs, it would had been The Woobie played straight. Not only that, as shown later on, she is only just the first in Sonic's circle of friends to go through this trope.
  • The ordeals the Chaotix went through that reduced them to Joke Character. Ranging from the sad state of their everyday lives to having one of their members who is one of Sonic's childhood friends resort to being a male escort to make ends meet. Going through trauma there just made things worse. Sonic is barely containing his regret for not being there for his friends.
    • When Charmy talks about Mighty's job,
Charmy: On the plus side, whenever he came home, he brought lots of money! On the downside, he always looked like he hated himself and we could usually hear him crying himself to sleep.
  • Charmy's Parental Abandonment due to his voice. His distraught reaction sells it.
  • Mighty being sick and tired of being under the effect of Chuck Cunningham Syndrome and burning the bridges he had with the Chaotix when he found out that he was ignored for YEARS for the sake of a bet.
    • Although it was real all along, due to being in a coma when it happened, Mighty thinks he made up his entire story of how he saved the world in his delirium. This went on for years until the present day party which confirmed the validity of the events. This meant that he spent years, right behind the people he thought were his friends and thought that his entire life is a joke.
  • Knuckles being driven to tears when he found out about his people.
Knuckles: All my life I wanted to know more about my past, my people, where I came from… Now I know, and I wish I'd never wondered to begin with!
  • Shade's entire life is nothing but misery. Let's see:
    • Being forced to kill the one thing that kept her sane in boot camp.
Shade: When your back is up against the wall, you'd be surprised at just how many things you swore you'd never do suddenly look so very appealing…but I do not blame you for hating me for killing Babe. A part of me still hates myself for it, and always will.
    • Became Gladius' personal handler, in more ways than one.
    • Witnessed an Adorable Abomination crossing over to her plane of existence.
    • Had to break years of growing under her dictator's Cult of Personality to overthrow him.
    • Finally, when testing the warp belts that would bring her people home, she encountered an omochao, triggering her PTSD which convinced her that Gizomochao is still alive out there, effectively sending her back to square one and crushing her hopes. The worst part? She's not wrong.
Shade: I encountered one of its probes. It recognized me, I am certain of it. The beast will be waiting for us, and if it has not died in all this time, then I doubt even the combined might of our unified peoples will make any difference, especially since it's had all this time to wait and grow and plot. We can never go back.(She closed her eyes, tears streaming down her cheeks) I am sorry, my friends…but I can never go back.
  • Upon the subject of immortality, the group realises that some of them will outlive their friends and family. Even though there are other immortals in the group, even then friends will drift apart in time if given different paths. This is sadly Truth in Television. Go look at your graduation photos and see whether you are still as close to your schoolmates from before as you are now.
  • Blaze in her long life has been through the ordeals of political marriage more times than she can count in her duty as queen. She still thinks Sonic is still the best.
  • Blaze's imprisonment. See Fate Worse than Death in the main page. Just simply recounting it reduced her to a nervous wreck, practically making her unrecognisable from no-nonsense badass queen just five minutes ago. This is pretty much the general opinion:
Mighty: Welp, looks like someone's finally topped you for worst backstory.
    Shadow: It's not a competition.
  • Cosmo's ordeal that forced her to seek help from Blaze. Her father went mad due to reports of invasion preparations from other nations and turned her mother into a giant tree while her sister gave her own life to let her escape. She saw her entire kingdom turn into a Crapsack World and had to live alone with only a few of her retainers seeking help from local heroes, only for them to be dead or busy with their own problems. Cue Sagara giving her the keys and spell to release Blaze.
    • It was later revealed in Chapter 10 that she never escaped her father at all. She was actually captured and experimented on to turn her into the 'typical princess seeking help'. She unknowingly had an implant in her that turned her into an unknowing spy which also acts as a bomb to make her head explode to force Blaze in giving up to save her life.
  • When Blaze was coming to terms that there is only one way of 'saving' the victims of Helheim, Cream just flatly asks that whether she had to kill them. The lack of emotion when Cream stated this query unnerved Blaze, thinking that she had broken her on the inside.
  • Honey being the Sole Survivor in her Doomed Hometown. She pretty much lost the only people who doesn't hate her for simply being a Sphinx in there and it took Blaze adopting her to lessen the pain.
Blaze glanced at Honey, who stared at the flames consuming her former home, the fire reflected in her eyes. "No tears?" She asked.
Honey shook her head. "I've already cried for the people who deserved it."
  • Constantly living with an Archnemesis Dad, legitimately having fun with him one day and then having to defend yourself from being killed by him in his own way of avoiding nepotism the next day because you refused to join his cause. Such is the life of Cream.
  • Even though it is pretty much a given, seeing Cosmo's desperation that it is not her father's fault and he is just a pawn to Eggman Nega while failing to save him from himself is still heart wrenching. Cream even wonders what does this spell for her own parents.
Shadow:Not everyone can be redeemed, sweetie.
  • Dark Oak's Alas, Poor Villain moment. Having all your action rendered All for Nothing via Cruel Mercy, realising that your country will be invaded due to the whole upheaval and even denied last words with you last living relative will break you.
  • Blaze's entire story in the Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) Bad Future before meeting Silver. She was enchanted in her mother's womb by Iblis to be its avatar to understand morality, unbeknownst to her parents. Since she was raised by them, she would not return to Iblis as she was supposed to due to their influence. Not understanding why since Blaze was created for that very purpose, Iblis killed her parents thinking that it would get her to come to him, never understanding why she wouldn't. Even after that, since Iblis never understood empathy, it kept coming after her to get her to become one again. Blaze would spend the rest of her life gathering resistance fighters and engage futile fights with it that always left her as the sole survivor since she is a part of it. It was only finally running into Silver that things went well for her and the rest is history...
  • Long after the events of Kamen Rider Gaim, Kouta is still haunted by his choice to leave Earth.
  • Gaim pretty much sums up the greatest contradiction in Sagara and by extension Helheim Forest: For all his work in inducing change to others, he can't change himself.
  • Knuckles saying that the reason why he keeps hanging out with Sonic and friends is that he is lonely from being the last of his kind, with Tikal in another dimension and the Nocturnus stuck in Twilight Cage.
Knuckles: I am in this dimension, discounting Tikal, who isn't really all here, anyway. It also doesn't help that pretty much all of the other echidnas I know of are either trapped somewhere else, dead, or colossal assholes. Is it any wonder that I keep hanging out with you guys, even if you can be jerks to me sometimes? You're pretty much all I've got.
  • Blaze states that after the whole mess, they were invaded, nearly had a civil war and were invaded again, this time managing to conquer their neighbours, only to spook their new neighbours until Blaze had control of the entire continent after a couple of decades.
Rouge: There's no such thing as happily ever afters in real life. After all, we aren't characters in a story. Our lives don't just stop once the final page has been turned and the book is closed. Life goes on. For real people, 'happy endings' are just a period of time until something else happens.
  • Chapter 10 is probably one of the very few works that will make you pity eldritch abominations due to their inability to change and being trapped in their roles.
