Recap / Titans S 1 E 8 Donna Troy

Go To

As the Titans go their separate ways, Dick turns to an old friend, Donna Troy, for answers.

Tropes

  • Affectionate Nickname: Donna refers to Dick as "Boy Wonder" and "Bird Boy".
  • Boring, but Practical: Donna doesn't discourage Dick from being a masked vigilante if that's what's best for him, but she's already discovered she can fight evil more effectively as her real self.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Kory holding Rachel by the throat and Donna reveals that her mission was to kill Rachel.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Gar got numb just after a single shot of liquor.
  • Cool Train: Kory and Gar travel in first class while Angela and Rachel travel in normal class, in an attempt to get privacy.
  • Cruella to Animals: Graham and his men are transporting a live (but sedated) bear and cut it up to sell its organs in China.
  • The Dreaded: In the flashback, when Dick mentions the Joker is on the loose, Donna admits that "even Diana thinks he's scary."
  • Evil Poacher: Donna meets with a poacher named Graham Norris who wants to expose his supervisor, thus ruining him and allowing Graham to dominate the fur market. The meeting is interrupted by Dick who beats all the poachers up until they're unconscious.
  • The Glomp: Rachel makes sure Dick doesn't leave without one.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Not as noticeable for the other three Titans, but Kori is still wearing the same coat as her first appearance, which is made more obvious by the FBI agent checking her against a picture from Episode Three.
  • Metaphorically True: Dick tells a patron at the exhibition of Donna's work that he knows her because her mom used to work with his dad sometimes.
  • A Minor Kidroduction: Donna is first introduced as a kid in one of Dick's flashbacks about his childhood.
  • Mythology Gag: Dick wonders aloud what the Penguin is doing.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Ironically, if Kory hadn't been so paranoid, the FBI agent in the train wouldn't have recognized her and called for assistance.
    • Dick beating up all the poachers ruins Donna's chance of dismantling the majority of the global illegal fur trade.
    • Rachel tries to help Kory get her memories back, so Kory remembers her mission was to kill Rachel.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Donna is a childhood friend who acts more like a Cool Big Sis to Dick, who is familar with Donna's couch but lacks the UST he had with Dove, implying they really are Just Friends.
  • Parental Substitute: Lampshaded by Rachel and Gar having a Parental Sexuality Squick at the thought of Dick and Kory having sex.
  • Properly Paranoid: Seemingly subverted. Because of the events of the previous episode, Kory has developed a mild case of PTSD. When one of the train's passengers continuously eyes her, she gets suspicious and later attacks him. She's horrified that she nearly strangled him to death and lets him go. However it turns out the passenger was actually a US Marshal and he requests assistance because of the attack.
  • The Reveal: Donna translates the Tamaranean script, revealing that Kory's mission was to kill Rachel.
  • Ship Tease: Kory teases Gar about wanting to get into Rachel's pants.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Dick, who utterly fails to notice how one of the men at Donna's gallery tries to flirt with him. Instead he goes on a rant about Donna's photography and later wonders what the Penguin was doing.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: But if you're speaking an obscure variant of Sumarian, it doesn't do much good.
  • Take a Third Option: Wonder Woman taught Donna Troy to protect the innocent. Batman taught Dick Grayson to punish the guilty. Donna tells Dick they need to find their own path between those options; Donna as the Intrepid Reporter and Dick...that's up to him.
  • Wham Line:
Donna: Unless I’m reading this wrong… your friend Kory is here to kill Rachel.
  • Women Are Wiser: Dick goes to his childhood friend for advice on what to do after burning his Robin costume.
  • You Are Not Alone: The flashback to young Dick and Donna includes Donna assuring him that she's there for him.
