Recap / 30 Rock S2 E6 "Somebody to Love"

Go To

Jack begins to develop feelings for a Democratic congresswoman after they have a one night stand together. Meanwhile, Kenneth desperately tries to replace a lost pair of Jack's pants, and Liz suspects her new neighbor of being a terrorist.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Celeste Cunningham. It's the source of her nickname, "CC".
  • Big Word Shout: Whenever Tracy loses something, he shouts what he's looking for over and over until he finds it. He demonstrates when Kenneth is looking for Jack's pants:
Tracy: PANTS! PANTS! PANTS! PANTS! PANTS! PANTS!
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: After Liz says complimentary things about Verizon and then turns to the camera and says, "Can we have our money now?".
  • Coincidental Broadcast: Jack happens to turn on MSNBC at the same time they're airing an interview with Celeste about the corporate malfeasance of the Sheinhardt Wig Company.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Raheem is subjected to this by the United States government after Liz denounces him for being a terrorist.
Raheem: America's government shocked my nuts.
Liz: No, I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to do... that type of thing.
  • Honor Before Reason: Even when his friends offer to give him the rest of the money to replace Jack's pants, Kenneth refuses to get money for nothing, even though "earning" the money involves him eating a bottle of expired ketchup, getting beaten with a golf club by Lutz, and making out with an old woman who thinks she's her husband.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: CC was shot in the face by her neighbor's dog, who was chewing on a rifle her neighbors left on the front lawn. She survived, and after several surgeries with the money she got from suing them, actually ended up prettier than she was before!
  • Lifetime Movie of the Week: Parodied with A Dog Took My Face And Gave Me A Better Face To Change The World: The Celeste Cunningham Story.
  • Magic Plastic Surgery: Celeste underwent facial reconstruction surgery after being shot in the face with a rifle and ended up looking even more beautiful than she did before. Downplayed, as it still took six surgeries to get her to where she is now.
  • Mistaken for Terrorist: Liz begins to suspect that her Middle Eastern neighbor, Raheem, is hatching a terrorist plot, due to his unfriendliness, a large number of maps in his walls and physical training. In fact, he's auditioning for The Amazing Race and didn't want to shake hands to avoid getting sick.
  • Opposites Attract: The conservative Jack falls for the liberal CC.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Raheem is this around Liz, which is part of what leads her to believe he's a terrorist.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Lutz lets out a number of high-pitched screams as he's woken up by Kenneth in an ape mask. He keeps screaming even as he beats Kenneth up with a golf club.
  • Sex Goddess: CC is apparently really good in the sack. In Jack's words, she "does it like her dad's a minister".
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Jack and CC's relationship has a lot of this, most notably one scene where she slaps him, kisses him, gets on an elevator, gets off the elevator to kiss him again, then slaps him again.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Jack, a conservative who is an executive at NBC, falls for Celeste Cunningham, a liberal congresswoman who is on a public crusade against NBC's parent company.
  • Stylistic Suck: The Lifetime Movie of the Week based on Celeste Cunningham's life, which Jack watches the entirety of.
  • Suspicion Aesop: Played for Black Comedy in the subplot with Raheem. Liz suspects he's a terrorist and reports him to the Department of Homeland Security, and only finds out afterwards that he was just auditioning for The Amazing Race. At the end it's implied that his treatment in custody will push him to actually turn to terrorism.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: The Sheinhardt Wig Company hands out shirts that say "NOT Poisoning Rivers Since 1997!" on the back.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode name comes from Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love", which CC uses as her ringtone.
