Recap / The Venture Bros S 6 E 8 Red Means Stop

Go To

The Guild and the O.S.I team up to take down the Blue Morpho, while the Monarch deals with Rusty's newest arch.

  • The Ace: Red Death, a villainous example, who has so much success and professionalism about his work that Hunter Gathers respects him as a fellow veteran in the Hero-Villain community. While both the O.S.I and G.C.I are currently at wits' end trying to track down the Blue Morpho and learn his identity, Red Death tracks down his secret base and identifies him as the Monarch within the space of a few hours.
  • Affably Evil: When not in character, Red Death is quite friendly and approachable, which simply makes him even more intimidating.
  • Cutting the Knot: Red Death proposes that simply killing Rusty and the Venture clan would clear up a lot of Monarch's simmering frustrations with his life in the Guild.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • The Guild resort to teaming up with the O.S.I. to catch Blue Morpho. When Blue Morpho doesn't show up, both Guild and O.S.I. members decide to have a fun time together by playing water volleyball in Rusty's pool.
    • Despite foiling their attempt at getting him to back off of arching Rusty, Red Death not only lets the Monarch and 21 off the hook but offers to solve his and their problems by eviscerating Maestro-Wave and the pile of dead arches, not only satiating his lust for killing but removing any evidence of the Monarch's attempt to reassert himself as Rusty's primary arch.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: The supervillain Maestro Wave assumes he's in a Saw scenario and that he's imprisoned and chained for psychological torment. Following this, he presumes out of nowhere that the food #21 leaves him three times a day is drugged, and that what he's meant to do is kill his cellmates and eat their butts instead.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Red Death is definitely not much to look at, but he is a charmer, yet terrifying. The Monarch confesses that if he were a woman, he would never stop calling him.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: Dr. Mrs. The Monarch attempts to dramatically say how she will kill Blue Morpho herself while leaving in an elevator, but the doors don't close when she wants them to.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: After the failed sting operation to catch the Blue Morpho, the OSI and Guild agents play volleyball in Dr. Venture's pool. When Doc catches them, he offers to mix them all drinks.
Rusty: Why are you on the bad guy's side?
Hank: Because Phantom Limb left in a huff, but mostly because we're winning!
Rusty: [beat] Fuck it. Who wants a Doc-tail?
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: 21's attempts to simply imprison Rusty's would-be arches to keep them out of the loop, even going so far as to cook them gourmet meals to keep them pacified, backfires as Maestro-Wave mistakes it for a psychological torture chamber and kills and devours the other arches. Fortunately, Red Death offers to tie up the loose ends himself while satiating his bloodlust.
  • Homage: At a few points to Saw and Taken.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: A nonromantic version. The Monarch is absolutely shocked that Red Death knows of "the Mighty Monarch". Red Death makes the Monarch even more flustered when he praises him on making Rusty a marionette doll.
  • Jumping on a Grenade: Done by Rusty as a child. Played with when it was revealed to be a harmless grenade version of a "Bang!" Flag Gun. Harmless, that is, except when the novelty flag stabbed young Rusty through.
  • Large Ham: Red Death is usually a calm and composed man, but when he is acting as a supervillain, he goes total ham.
  • Last Episode, New Character: Red Death. His picture was previously shown in a few episodes, but he properly debuts here in the season finale.
  • Mugging the Monster: The Monarch and 21 try to threaten the Red Death by lying about that they kidnapped his wife and daughter. The Red Death, speaking in a deep scary tone, counter-threatens them that he will come and kill them if they ever harm his wife and daughter. He then proceeds to effortlessly locate their hideout, and they're reduced to pathetically begging for mercy until he relents.
  • Season Finale: Doesn't conclude the Blue Morpho storyline as the production team ran out of episodes in the season order. (The storyline would resume in the next season premiere.)
  • Spy Speak: Dr. Mrs. The Monarch and Hunter Gathers try to do this during their meet-up in the park, but quickly drop it after they get confused on what type of code they should be using.
  • Shout-Out: Red Death's threat to Blue Morpho/Monarch and Kano/21 is taken almost verbatim from Taken. #21 even flat out whines that Red Death is about to go "all Liam Neeson" on them.
  • Underestimating Badassery: The Monarch's first real mistake in getting back to being Rusty's arch, as he underestimated not only how disarming and Genre Savvy a veteran villain like Red Death could be, but also how downright vicious and threatening he can be when pushed too far.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Red Death points out that the Monarch's obsession with Rusty is self-destructive, and that he'd be much better off killing Venture and moving on to better projects, as Red Death himself had done.
