Recap / The Real Ghostbusters S 2 E 13 A Fright At The Opera

Go To

Egon has invited Peter to the opera, much to Peter's annoyance since he thought it was a baseball game (because Egon had referred to the Metropolitan Opera as the "Met" and Peter's team is the Mets). They begin watching the opera, but when "Ride of the Valkyries" plays, real Valkyries (singing, overweight women in Viking garb who ride flying horses) show up. They cause chaos, and Peter and Egon eventually save the life of a diva, upon whom Peter has a crush.

The two decide to get rid of the Valkyries (along with Ray and Winston), but to Peter's displeasure, Egon (who has an appreciation for art) convinces the opera people to have them do it for free. The next morning, the Ghostbusters show up, and a janitor tells Winston that the Phantom of the Opera is haunting the building. This concerns him, but Egon assures him that the Phantom of the Opera is only a movie character.

The diva makes Peter her bodyguard (which he mainly uses as an excuse to lie around and ogle her) and the others follow the PKE readings to the roof. The Valkyries show up and the Ghostbusters attack them, but they miss, almost fall off the roof, and the Valkyries escape. The Ghostbusters track the Valkyries into the basement but can't find them, yet they return when Leopold the conductor rehearses.

The Ghostbusters try to warn Leopold that the Valkyries are attracted to "Ride of the Valkyries", and tell him to cancel the show, but he refuses, and sure enough, they show up. The diva dumps Peter (revealing that she never returned his affections and was only exploiting his feelings for her to make Leopold jealous), who is then kidnapped by the Valkyries, who threaten to take him away to Valhalla (which is "one of those places you never come back from"). The other Ghostbusters manage to trap the Valkyries and save Peter, but then it turns out that the Phantom of the Opera is real. However, he decides to leave due to the noise bothering him.

This episode provides examples of

  • Admiring the Abomination: When the Valkyries first show up, Peter thinks they're cool and the only interesting thing about the opera.
  • Always Camp: The diva is a stereotypical hammy opera singer, being petty and singing random phrases even when not performing.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Despite the existence of the paranormal (including a few cases of fictional characters coming to life, e.g. "Xmas Marks the Spot" and "Who're You Calling Two-Dimensional?"), Egon doesn't believe that the Phantom of the Opera could be real.
  • Classical Music Is Boring: Peter outright falls asleep during the opera and annoys Leopold with his outbursts.
Egon: How do you like the opera?
Peter: Hard to say. So far, it's just been a lot of singing.
  • Classical Music Is Cool: Egon loves it, attending the opera with full enthusiasm. He wanted to dress up all fancy before meeting the diva opera singer.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Peter thought Egon had invited him to a Mets game instead of a performance at the Met.
  • Faint in Shock: When she sees the Valkyries for the second time, the diva passes out, complete with the dramatic groan and hand raised to forehead.
  • Fat Bastard: The Valkyries are fat and want to kidnap Peter and take him to Valhalla forever.
  • Flight: The Valkyries' horses can fly.
  • Gagging on Your Words: Peter stammers when trying to use the word "free" when wanting money for the services.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Invoked when the diva intentionally flirts with Peter to make Leopold jealous.
  • Hating on Monday: At one point, the diva yawns and says, "I hate Mondays!".
  • Light Is Not Good: The Valkyries are evil even though they're blonde and ride white horses.
  • Love Triangle: Peter is in love with the diva, but the diva is in love with Leopold. Exploited when the diva intentionally pretends to love Peter back to make Leopold jealous.
  • Magic Music: The song "Ride of the Valkyries" attracts the Valkyries.
  • Mythology Gag: Peter brings up "that time I saved the world", which happened in the original movie (though the other Ghostbusters joined in on saving the world then).
  • Not So Stoic: When the Ghostbusters almost fall to their death, they all scream, Egon included.
  • One-Gender Race: The Valkyries are all female.
  • Operation: Jealousy: The diva happily uses Peter to get a rise out of her conductor boyfriend, Leopold, for yawning during her last performance. It works a little too well when Leopold finally makes an ultimatum and storms out, prompting the diva to yell at Peter for being too thick to see what she was really doing.
  • Real After All: The janitor says the Phantom of the Opera is real. Egon doubts it, but at the end, it turns out he is.
  • Remember When You Blew Up a Sun?: Peter remembers saving the world in the original movie.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The Phantom of the Opera decides to leave because he doesn't want to live in such a noisy place anymore.
  • Shout-Out: The Phantom of the Opera turns out to be real.
  • The Show Must Go On: Leopold refuses to cancel his opera concert, even if it means the Valkyries showing up.
  • Skewed Priorities: Leopold is more focused on doing his show than on the danger of the Valkyries.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Egon says that Peter will enjoy the opera, but (asides from having a crush on the diva) he does not.
    • Egon assures Winston that there's no Phantom of the Opera... but there is one.
  • Theme Music Power-Up: The theme tune plays as the Valkyries get trapped.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: During the opening performance, Peter asks Egon what a Valkyrie looks like.
Peter: I mean, it wouldn't by chance be a supernatural fat lady on horseback, would it?
[Peter and Egon slowly look up]
