Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S 2 E 5 Semper Lie

Go To

The fifth episode of the second season of The Looney Tunes Show.

To avoid going to the Peach Festival with Porky, Bugs lies to him that he's helping his (imaginary) older sister Viola move away. Unfortunately for Bugs, his lie snowballs, leading to Daffy joining the U.S. Marines.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Bugs' entire plan to get out of going to the Peach Festival with Porky entailed inventing a female relative, wasting several hundred dollars on shipping fees to his own house and getting imprisoned in Albania by accident for a year leads to him right back to being in time for next year's Peach Festival.
  • Armed Farces: This episode's B-plot involves Daffy accidentally enlisting in the Marine Corps. Bizarrely, this turns out to be the one job he is not incompetent at, but he is discharged at the end of the episode for having flat feet. (Because he's a duck).
  • Continuity Nod: When Daffy gets his head shaved at the U.S. Marines, he mentions that he is a licensed cosmetologist, referencing the events of a previous episode, "Beauty School".
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Bugs could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he simply told Porky he does not want to go to the Peach Festival.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When Bugs, disguised as Viola arrives at the Albanian airport, he presents his ID to the worker at the terminal. As his disguise does not match his normal photo, he's accused of being a spy, arrested, and thrown in a prison, where he stays for a year until he is rescued by Daffy.
  • Dragged into Drag: When Bugs lies about helping Viola move to Albania, he ends up having to dress like a woman. He says that it's worse than having to dress up as a peach.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Daffy has one as a drill instructor when he joins the marines.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: When Bugs tells Daffy that he hates going to the Peach Festival with Porky because of how horrible it is (it takes six hours to get there, it’s in the middle of a hot desert with mosquitos, and he has to stand in long lines for peach-related food including peach cobbler, soup, and sandwiches). Daffy first suggests that he lies, but quickly changes his mind because that's his "role". Daffy even suggests to Bugs that he should just simply tell Porky he doesn’t want to go to the festival.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!:
    • Early in the episode, Daffy asks Bugs to pay off his parking ticket, saying that if he doesn't pay it today, the 14th, the fine doubles. This gets Bugs to realize that since today's the 14th, this weekend will be the annual Peach Festival, which he is not looking forward to.
    • Bugs gets arrested and thrown in Albanian prison because the people at the airport suspect that he's a spy when he arrives to Albania dressed as a woman:
  • "Fawlty Towers" Plot: Bugs' lie to get out of going to the Peach Festival with Porky snowballs until he ends up in an Albanian prison. At one point Speedy warns Bugs against going through with it.
  • Foreshadowing: At the beginning of this episode, Bugs is reading a newspaper and on the front page there is a story about spies being arrested in Albania and Daffy tells a lie that involves Albania. Bugs tells a lie involving Albania, and when he goes to there he gets mistaken for a spy and is sent to jail.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the end of the episode, Bugs is rescued by Daffy and returns home. He ends up returning just in time for the Peach Festival.
  • Hidden Depths: Following Daffy's training with the U.S. Marines, he proves to be an incredibly competent soldier. By the time he and Bugs reunite, it's implied that Daffy has been on multiple missions to rescue prisoners of war from foreign countries, and has done a darn good job at it.
  • It Makes Sense in Context: Bugs tells Porky a lie to avoid going to the Peach Festival that ends up with Daffy joining the Marines and Bugs being arrested for suspicion of being an Albanian spy.
  • Literal-Minded: When Daffy signs up for the U.S. Marines, he thinks he's going to see sea animals like in a park.
  • Mistaken for Spies: The lies Bugs tells to get out of going to the Peach Festival ultimately lead to him being arrested as a spy in Albania.
  • Phoney Call: Bugs calls up Speedy and pretends to be speaking to his (non-existent) sister Viola. Speedy is savvy enough to work out what is going on and plays along.
  • Pin-Pulling Teeth: Daffy does this while storming an Albanian prison to rescue Bugs.
  • Pretending to Be One's Own Relative: Bugs dresses up as his (non-existent) older sister Viola as part of his plan to avoid going to the Peach Festival with Porky.
  • Semper Fi: Daffy joins the Marine Corps in this episode. Also, the title is a pun on this trope.
  • Snowball Lie: Bugs lies about helping Viola move just to avoid going to the Peach Festival. Speedy even warns him that all his lies will snowball and will get really bad later on. Played with in that Bugs is fully aware that the lie is snowballing and makes no attempt to stop it.
  • Time Skip: This episode's ending takes place one year after Bugs is taken to prison.
