Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S 2 E 6 Father Figures

Go To

The sixth episode of the second season of The Looney Tunes Show.

Volunteering in the Father Figures program, Walter enters himself and Bugs in the Royal Oaks Glen Oaks Oakwood Oaks Country Club's father/son tennis tournament, as he considers Bugs to be like a son to him, and puts Bugs through training as part of a bonding experience. Meanwhile, Porky is matched up with the troubled Henery Hawk, who is obsessed with wanting to eat chicken, and Foghorn Leghorn is paired up with Daffy, who lies about his age, despite Carol's objections.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: Father Figures.
  • Babysitter's Nightmare: A variant; Porky enters the Father Figures program and is teamed up with Henery Hawk. Henery tells Porky that he goes through father figures like he goes through boxes of chocolate. Porky is determined to prove that he can be a good father figure to Henery, taking him on such activities as watching paint dry and watching grass grow, even though all Henery wants to do is eat chicken, which Porky keeps ignoring because he thinks it's a metaphor for wanting attention. Porky finally realizes that Henery really did want chicken after Henery bites Foghorn Leghorn at the R.O.G.O.O.O.C.C.'s father/son tennis tournament, resulting in Foghorn becoming hospitalized. When Porky finally serves Henery some chicken near the end of the episode, Henery congratulates him on being the first father figure who didn't give up on him.
  • Butt Biter: Henery does this to Foghorn at the R.O.G.O.O.O.C.C.'s father/son tennis tournament as a result of Porky ignoring his need for chicken. This results in Foghorn becoming hospitalized.
  • The Cameo:
    • Charlie Dog appears in a pet shop, where Henery tries to eat him because Porky won't give him chicken.
    • Barnyard Dawg appears at the R.O.G.O.O.O.C.C.'s father/son tennis tournament as the referee.
  • Carnivore Confusion: Henery attempts to eat Foghorn despite both being sapient. Consequently, he gets arrested by the police for it.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When Foghorn comes to Bugs' house to adopt Daffy, Carol reminds him that Daffy was the one who ruined his movie and destroyed his company, referencing the events of two previous episodes; "The Foghorn Leghorn Story" and "Working Duck".
    • When Walter sees Daffy, he tells him he thought he was banned from the R.O.G.O.O.O.C.C., as Daffy had previously snuck into the club using Walter's membership number in "Members Only".
  • Didn't See That Coming: Daffy and Foghorn over being paired together in the Father Figures program.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite the fact that Daffy both bankrupted Foghorn's company after inheriting it from him, and later ruined the movie Foghorn was making about his life, to the point where they came to blows over the latter (both of which Carol points out to Foghorn when she advises against adopting Daffy), not to mention sent him a hate mail that insults him, Foghorn continues to rope Daffy into his adventures and the two remain on good terms with each other.
  • Furry Confusion: Charlie Dog is a regular dog kept at a pet store. The same episode shows Barnyard Dawg who is an anthropomorphic dog working as a referee.
  • A Good, Old-Fashioned Paint Watching: When Porky joins the Father Figures Program and becomes a father figure to Henery, some of the activities he takes him on is watching paint dry and grass grow. Henery is not amused, and even lampshades how Porky's idea of fun is acting out the expression of watching paint dry.
  • Grandma's Recipe: When Porky finally serves Henery some chicken near the end of the episode, he says that it's his grandmother's secret recipe. Henery is interested in spending next weekend with Porky so that he can learn the recipe, much to Porky's surprise.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Walter finds out that Foghorn and Daffy are also entering the R.O.G.O.O.O.C.C.'s father/son tennis tournament, he tells them it's called the father/son tournament, not the father figure/son tournament. This is despite the fact that Bugs is not his biological son.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Bugs is surprised that Daffy joined the Father Figures program, but not that when he learns that Daffy is going to be mentored by someone else. As he says, that actually makes sense.
  • Like a Son to Me: After convincing Bugs to enter the tournament, Walter gets a little too into the father/son aspect of their lie rather than the tennis part. He's crushed when the tournament is over.
  • Like Father, Like Son: In a variation, after seeing how bad Walter is at tennis, Bugs realizes that Lola took after her mother in terms of athletic ability.
  • Manchild: Daffy. When he tells Bugs that he's joining the Father Figures program, he tells him that's he's not the father figure, he's the one getting the father figure. Upon hearing this, Bugs admits that the latter makes more sense.
  • Meat-O-Vision: When Henery sees Foghorn Leghorn playing at the R.O.G.O.O.O.C.C.'s father/son tennis tournament, he visualizes Foghorn as a giant roast chicken.
  • Parental Substitute: This episode revolves around the Father Figures program. Walter serves as this to Bugs, Porky serves as this to Henery, and Foghorn serves as this to Daffy.
  • Picky Eater: Henery. When Porky tries to take him on a picnic, he packs peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and boxes of chocolates, but Henery insists on eating chicken.
  • Running Gag: As Walter picks up Bugs for the fishing trip, Daffy comes home with a heavy bag. He simply says he was out and has stuff, later claiming he has no idea what he was even doing. Bugs is tempted to check inside the bag, but he ultimately feels it's best to not know. The last scene shows the bag contains cowboy gear, which Daffy wears while dancing at a western-themed club.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: To Henery's frustration, Porky consistently fails to pick up on his obvious sarcasm.
  • Spit Take: Daffy does this to Porky when Porky tells him that he has a kid (specifically, one he adopted from the Father Figures program).
  • That's All, Folks!: This episode's end tag has Henery say "That's all, chicken!", "That's chicken, folks!" and "Chicken chicken, chicken!" in the first three takes. In the fourth take, he says "Just get me some chicken!"
  • Throw the Dog a Bone:
    • With Walter disappointed over how the end of the tennis tournament means the end of their ruse, Bugs says he heard about a father/son golf tournament coming up. Walter says he's got a big heart.
    • Henery says Porky is the only one in the program that never gave up on him and that that counts for a lot.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Chicken for Henery Hawk. Throughout the episode, he keeps telling Porky he wants chicken, but Porky keeps ignoring it, thinking it's a metaphor for wanting attention. He realizes that Henery really did want chicken when he sees Henery bite Foghorn at the R.O.G.O.O.O.C.C.'s tennis tournament, and serves him some near the end of the episode. Henery instantly likes the chicken Porky prepared, considering it the best he's ever had, and asks him if they could spend next weekend to learn the recipe for it.
  • Women Are Wiser: Carol again points out how Daffy has previously wrecked Foghorn's ventures, not that he cares. She ends up telling the Father Figures program that Daffy isn't a child, getting him kicked out.
Foghorn: [chuckling] Carol. Always wantin' to spoil our fun.
