Recap / The Lion Guard S1E7 "Fuli's New Family"

Go To

When the Lion Guard begins to worry that Fuli spends too much time on her own, they start including her in their own family activities, leading to repeated disaster. Can Fuli's friends help her finally find a home and family she can call her own?

This episode contains examples of

  • A Day in the Limelight: It's Fuli's turn this time.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Bunga. Although this is not the first time Rafiki has tried to explain something to Bunga only for Bunga to take it out of context, the latter doesn't pause to ask if this is similar to what happened in "Bunga the Wise".
  • An Aesop: Sometimes people want to be alone, and there's nothing wrong with that.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Fuli saves Bunga from Janja just as the latter is about to attack. Then the rest of the Guard save both Fuli and Bunga from the lava flow that's stranded them.
  • Brick Joke: Both Bunga and Chungu worry that immunity is something "contagious."
  • Call-Back: Technically call forward, but Nala brings up Kiara's first hunt, and given that she actually did do a good job in that hunt until she moved a rock or stepped on a branch, she probably would have done it successfully. This clarifies at least part of the Same Character, But Different. It could also count in "Return of the Roar" since Simba said they were tracking gazelles, but not hunting.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Bunga whines that Fuli has ruined his fun when she swoops in to rescue him from Janja and his clan.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Rafiki explains that Bunga is immune to cobra venom, Bunga takes this to mean he is invincible to every other danger as well. He learns his lesson.
  • Convection, Schmonvection: Despite being said to be potentially deadly even to the "immune" Bunga, lava is portrayed as being no warmer than a campfire.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Subverted. Although Ushari's bite was pretty understandable, and it is pretty satisfying to see Bunga get karma for bullying Ushari over trying to eat a hyrax, Beshte still tries to call Ushari out on it, since Bunga was unintentionally flung into the bushes where Ushari happened to be. Ushari's not having it.
Ushari: "He landed on my head, Beshte. He'sssss lucky I only bit him once."
  • Eating Lunch Alone: At the end of the day, everyone in the Lion Guard is ready for family dinner - everyone except Fuli, who hunts all alone.
  • Exact Words: Kion asked Fuli if she wanted to hunt, but he never said anything about killing the gazelle. Fuli still doesn't believe it.
  • Hates Being Touched: Fuli prefers not to be hugged and stroked, no matter how soft others think her fur is. She makes an exception for her friends, though.
  • "I Am" Song: Fuli sings one about how she is perfectly content with her solitary lifestyle.
  • I Work Alone: Fuli gives this as her reason for not joining the rest of the Guard for dinner.
  • I Was Just Joking: A porcupine Bunga is playing with suggests sarcastically that Bunga go play in a volcano. Bunga thinks this is a great idea and trots off to find one.
Porcupine: "No! It's a bad idea! I was just kidding!
  • Joke of the Butt: Bunga offers his rump up when Ono says they need to suck the venom out of Bunga's snakebite wound. No one's too keen on taking the task on.
  • Loners Are Freaks: The rest of the Guard seems to believe this to some extent, as they are surprised to learn that Fuli, an introvert, is perfectly happy hunting and eating alone.
  • Ocular Gushers: True to form, Timon and Pumbaa when they believe Bunga is dying from a cobra bite.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Bunga after Ono explains to him what the term "venomous" means in terms of the bite to the rump Ushari gave him. He then proceeds to play up the idea that he's "dying." Fuli calls him out on his dramatics.
    • Fuli has this reaction when she finds out that Bunga is in the Outlands.
    • Bunga has another one when he finds he isn’t immune to everything
    • The hyenas have a collective one when the realise they’re standing on a rock that is sitting in lava.
  • Shown Their Work:
    • Female cheetahs actually are loners and it takes only a whole episode for the Guard to learn that.
    • Honey badgers really are resistant to snake venom. They also aren't affected by porcupine quills due to their extremely tough hide.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: The buffalo stampede at the beginning of the episode is only seen for about a minute, but it led to the rest of the events of the episode: Bunga being bitten by Ushari, Rafiki telling Bunga that he is immune to snakebites, Timon claiming that friends do not let friends eat alone, the rest of the Guard thinking that they must make sure Fuli is never alone, and Bunga thinking he is immune to everything and putting himself in danger.
  • Somewhere, a Herpetologist Is Crying:
    • Despite lacking any distinguishing hood markings in his previous appearances, Ushari now has spectacle markings on his hood like an Indian cobra, which does not occur in Africa. For added irony, Ono outright states that Ushari is an Egyptian cobra.
    • While Ono can be forgiven for referring to venom as poison, since Bunga doesn't understand the difference, he still advocates sucking the venom out of the bite - a treatment that is antiquated and useless at best, and potentially very harmful to the patient at worst.
  • Toilet Humor: At one point, Fuli ends up with elephant dung splattered on her shoulder. She thinks it's mud at first, until Ono tells her otherwise.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Fuli likes running around the Pride Lands and barely doing anything 'girly', but she does not like getting covered with mud, made worse when Ono tells her that it is not mud, implying it is elephant dung.
  • Too Dumb to Live: After Rafiki told him that honey badgers are immune to snakebites, Bunga thinks that he is immune to everything, and goes from intentionally walking in the mouth of a crocodile, bouncing a porcupine on his head, to thinking that it is okay for him to play in a volcano! He even relaxed in a steam vent surrounded by lava! Fortunately, Fuli stopped him from getting to the volcano, and while they are trapped on a floating rock surrounded by lava, Bunga finally learns that he is not immune to fire and lava, as a small bit of lava burns a bit of his fur.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: More trouble for Tiifu and Zuri this episode, as they show disgust that Fuli is hunting beside Kiara and even stating that cheetahs are usually loners.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Fuli gives this to the entire Guard for fouling her hunt up. Naturally they are extremely remorseful in immediately afterwards. Fuli also gives a more vicious and violent one to Bunga for faking that he was dying as she was actually afraid he would die.
‘’Are you kidding me? We were worried about you, and you were faking it?’’
