Journeying into the ruins of Lux Aurea, Callum's group races against the clock to discover any information about Startouch Elves before nightfall.

Karim meanwhile, addresses Sol Regem and proposes a plot to restore the crestfallen Dragon to glory.

Tropes:

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Callum takes Rayla's hand when it looks like they are not going to make it out of the bookery alive, and attempts to declare his love for her, but before he can Rayla assures him he doesn't have to, she already knows.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: When fighting against the Shadowbeast in the library hall, Rayla, Callum and Amaya adopt this formation when they get surrounded. After they successfully defend themselves, Rayla points out what good companions they make.
  • Berate and Switch: Midway through telling off Rayla, Amaya switches gears upon getting her reasons for leaving Callum behind, empathizing with Rayla, having gone through a similar phase herself once, and encouraging her to find strength with her loved one, instead of alone.
  • Big Damn Heroes: First Callum saves Rayla by punching out a Banther jumping at her. Later Zubeia comes to the rescue of the heroes when all hope seems lost.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The book drop Kazi introduces the group to at the start of the episode, is used by Amaya and Corvus, to wait out the Banther attack until morning, at the episode's end.
  • Cool Sword: Kazi and Callum's research leads them to information on a sword called the Novablade, which according to legend can kill a Startouch Elf.
  • Crash in Through the Ceiling: Zubeia makes her big entrance through the bookery's glass ceiling.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: After his audience with Sol Regem, Karim believes all he has to do is heal the dragon's body to make him whole again, failing to realize from his speech that it's Sol's spirit that's in need of revitalization.
  • Idiot Ball: Callum makes the situation worse by not leaving the library before nightfall when the corrupted Banthers show up, instead looking for information to help Rayla. Even if they're trying to beat Viren and Claudia to Aaravos there's no reason Callum could not come back another day, the library will still be there.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Him...: Amaya reads Rayla the riot act for how her decision to leave broke Callum's heart, even promising to kill her if she ever does so again.
  • Internal Reveal: After Amaya's talk with her, Rayla tells Callum about her family being coined by Viren, willing to trust him with her burden.
  • It Has Been an Honor: When Corvus senses that his and Amaya's time has come, he tells her in sign language that it has been an honor serving under her and both perform a Headbutt of Love.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Callum insists on staying at the Bookery for a few more moments to find a spell to free Rayla's family. He successfully finds it... just in time for the shadow creatures to break in.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: For the first time in the series, Amaya actually speaks, telling her nephews to "Go" when the Banthers begin to swarm the bookery, highlighting just how dangerous the situation has become.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: A crossover with Our Zombies Are Different. The shadow creatures infesting the city of Lux Aurea only show up after dark and infect victims with a single bite.
  • Over-the-Shoulder Carry: When Callum goes back for a book needed to help free Rayla's family, Amaya hoists her nephew onto her shoulder to pry him away from the books, as their expedition had run out of time.
  • "The Reason I Suck" Speech: Sol Regem delivers a bitterly ironic speech describing his mighty, ruined and aged body to the two Sunfire Elves so they fully understand How the Mighty Have Fallen.
Karim: You can make them believe the Sun will shine again!
Sol Regem: Then behold...the once great Sun King! Bask in the brilliant rays of light that shine through the holes in my tattered wings. Gaze upon the mighty face of my golden glory, dripping with seared flesh, melted by evil magic. Bow down before the swollen, oozing bedsores of a magnificent Archdragon, lying motionless and depressed for decades. I lost my hope long before I lost my sight. The Sun will never rise again for me. I've lived centuries in this eternal night. Go away.
  • Withholding the Big Good: It takes Zubeia until nightfall to reach Lux Aurea just when the heroes are about to be overwhelmed by dark Banthers. Any sooner than that and there would've been no tension.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Similar to "The Library" in Avatar: The Last Airbender, a party composed of a guy voiced by Jack DeSena, another guy, a lady, a lady with a disability, a nerdy guest party member with a connection to a university, their animal mounts, and their animal companions, venture to an expansive library to locate information that is key to stopping a major threat, which they manage to find, but lose an ally on the process.
  • You Remind Me of X: In the conversation between Rayla and Amaya, when Rayla justifies her leaving Callum to protect him, Amaya retorts with a warm expression that Rayla reminds her a lot of herself after she lost her sister.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Amaya sacrifices herself to save Bait and to allow the heroes to escape while she keeps the corrupted Banthers at bay.
