Sam & Max spend Christmas with Sam's grandmother, at the prison where she used to be a warden.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Max's comment that spending Christmas at Granny Ruth's has "never been better" turns into this:
Max: ...each year I wish it would get better, but it never does!
  • Chimney Entry: After Granny gets done easily taking down Herzog, Santa Claus enters from the room from the chimney (that’s in the middle of the warden’s office for some reason) to confirm who’s naughty and nice.
  • Christmas Elves: Sam & Max wear elf costumes to go with Sam’s grandma to spread Christmas cheer at the prison she used to work at.
  • Christmas Episode: Sam & Max spend Christmas at a prison, but not for the reason one might think.
  • Don't Tell Mama: Jacks turns on Herzog immediately when Granny Ruth threatens to tell his mom all the trouble he’s been causing.
  • Everyone Hates Fruit Cakes: Max hands Herzog a fruit cake that’s so heavy it drops to the ground, squishing his fingers. Granny later uses one to block Herzog’s punch, which breaks his hand, and then drops it on his foot.
Max: Well, that was an unconventional use of a beloved holiday treat.
  • Great Escape: A group of inmates are attempting a jailbreak, but Granny Ruth showing up ruins their plans.
  • I Don't Like the Sound of That Place: Blood Island Maximum Security Prison
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Herzog has these to show that he’s the “bad inmate”.
  • Mall Santa: Granny Ruth plays one of a sort at Blood island. The inmates line up to get a chance to sit on her lap as she plays Mrs. Claus.
  • "Miss X" Pun: The warden’s secretary is apparently named “Miss Demeanor”.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Sam’s grandma is a total badass: she’s a former prison warden who was both loved and feared by the inmates and has no problem taking bad guys down with some Good Old Fisticuffs.
  • Pressure Point: Granny presses a spot on Jacks’ neck to make him pass out when she’s gotten all the information she needed from him.
Max: Now there’s a move every parent should know at bedtime.
  • Prison Rape: While in the prison showers, Max bends over to pick up a bar of soap and a sign that says “Do Not Open Til Xmas” covers his bare ass.
  • Toilet Teleportation: Herzog flushes himself down the toilet to both get away from Granny Ruth and to get to the warden.
  • What Are You in For?: Sam asks one of the inmates this, who replies “Ate my parole officer with fava beans and seltzer.”

It's Dangly Deever Time

After their TV goes out, they try to watch a show on the Geek's antique TV and bring a Howdy Doody-like character to life. But while they are gone, Dangly Deever's evil twin attempts to take over the city.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Decon-Recon Switch: It seems poised to rake the old-fashioned entertainment archetype that Dangly represents over the coals, only to show that as goofy and borderline naive as his kind of character is, they're still capable of genuine goodness and bravery, to the point that even protagonists like Sam & Max can't help but respect Deever.
  • Demonic Dummy: Deadly Dangly Deever, a Howdy Doody expy. However, the original Dangly Deever (who averts the trope) is still around, and he helps Sam & Max round up his evil doppelganger.
