Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S2 E35 "The Hard Way"

Go To

Ludo decides he's left Glossaryck alone in the dungeon for long enough and demands to be taught magic. Glossaryck puts up no resistance, much to Ludo's initial confusion, and gets started immediately.

The lessons start by Glossaryck having Ludo do menial labor with no magic involved (Ludo asked for it). After finding out that the physical work was completely pointless, Ludo is quickly taught how to do the Levitato spell. He procceeds to spend the rest of the day practicing it.

That night, Ludo's wand tells him that Glossaryck has been withholding information about a forbidden chapter in the Book of Spells that Star had already been shown. Ludo confronts the little magic man about it, and Glossaryck admits that the chapter exists and Star had indeed seen it. Some prodding causes Glossaryck to reluctantly unlock the chapter for Ludo to see, which allows Toffee (whose soul was in the wand) to possess Ludo.

Tropes:

  • Back from the Dead: Toffee's mortal form was destroyed, but he sealed his spirit into the magic of the realm he was transported to, which is how he's been doing his work through Ludo's wand. By tricking Ludo into reading a dark spell from Eclipsa's chapter, his spirit is able to take over Ludo's body.
  • The Bus Came Back: This episode marks the reappearance of Toffee (as voice) since his last appearance in "Storm the Castle".
  • Call-Back:
    • For Ludo's first magic lesson, Glossaryck asks him to "bring me that apple," just like Star's test in "Baby".
    • Ludo forces Glossaryck to show him the "forbidden chapter" of the spellbook from "Page Turner". Like Marco, Ludo falls victim to Demonic Possession, but unlike Marco he has no one with him to reverse the effect.
  • Demonic Possession: After Ludo reads the forbidden chapter, Toffee possesses him and speaks to Glossaryck.
  • Exact Words: When Ludo asks if he's better than Star after mastering the Levitato spell, Glossaryck says that he's better at following the book than Star. Later, when Ludo asks to see the forbidden chapter that he claims Glossaryck showed Star, Glossaryck corrects him by saying that he never showed it to Star, but that she saw it on her own.
  • Freudian Excuse: It's implied that Ludo's goal in gaining power is seeking validation due to Parental Neglect in his childhood.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Toffee assumed that Glossaryck was trying to get Ludo to do one, though the little man denies it.
  • History Repeats: Once again, Toffee unexpectedly replaces Ludo as the Big Bad through sheer manipulation. The first time it was by making him look bad through a string of losses. This time it's pulling a Grand Theft Me after a series of major victories.
  • Literal Genie: Glossaryck makes Ludo drag the book around because he asks for his training to be as hard as possible. Turns out casting spells was really easy and Glossaryck was just making it hard because Ludo asked for it to be.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Toffee tricks Ludo into opening the forbidden chapter by telling him that Glossaryck showed it to Star and is now deliberately hiding it from Ludo (at least, that would seem to be the gist of it given Ludo's half of the conversation).
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Ludo reveals he is one out of fifty eggs.
  • Mundane Utility: Once he's mastered the Levitato spell, Ludo uses it to do everything, including moving up three steps.
  • Not Quite Dead: Toffee is confirmed to be in Ludo's wand, and the end of the episode has him use Ludo as a vessel after Ludo reads the forbidden chapter.
  • Parental Neglect: Ludo rants about how his parents hardly taught him anything because he was just "one egg out of fifty".
  • Parental Substitute: Ludo tries to use Glossaryck as this, which Glossaryck barely tolerates.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Glossaryck warns Ludo that the forbidden chapter is full of dark magic that may taint him, but Ludo is undeterred and demands he open it anyway. Cue Demonic Possession.
  • Torture Is Ineffective: Ludo locks Glossaryck up and has him go without food or sleep, in attempt to persuade Glossaryck to train him. When Ludo releases him, it turns out that not only was Glossaryck not affected at all (apparently even leaving his cell for morning strolls), he starts training Ludo without putting up any resistance whatsoever. Ludo is understandably baffled.
  • Training from Hell: Invoked by Ludo, who assumes learning magic will demand a lot of arduous training. After doing a lot of nothing by hiking around with the book, Glossaryck reveals that he can just teach Ludo spells without all the trouble.
  • Troll: Glossaryck spends much of the episode annoying Ludo by taking advantage of his insecurities and gullibility to get what he wants, just as Ludo annoys Glossaryck into giving him what he wants.
  • Voices Are Mental: Toffee talks with his tone of voice after he possesses Ludo's body.
  • Wax On, Wax Off: Ludo's wand training starts with him doing menial labor, which largely involves dragging the Book of Magic around. He quickly finds out that it's completely pointless, with Glossaryck only making Ludo do it because he more or less asked for it.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Ludo is desperate for a father figure and makes Glossaryck tell him how proud he is of him.
  • Wham Episode: Toffee's soul is trapped in the wand, and he manages to use the forbidden chapter in the spellbook to channel himself through Ludo.
  • Wham Line:
    • "Hello... Toffee."
    • "Excellent." (after Glossaryck tells Toffee that he doesn't have a side).
  • You Didn't Ask: Glossaryck when Ludo asks him why he didn't show him the forbidden chapter.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Glossaryck when Ludo asks him to say "Good night, my Darling."
