Go To

Original air date: 4/16/2008

In this homage to John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, the Marsh family heads west after the Internet connection goes down nationwide.

"Over Logging" contains examples of:

  • Anatomically Impossible Sex: When Randy finally jacks off to Internet porn after several weeks, he ends up covering himself, the walls, the floor, and the computer in semen.
  • Art Shift: When the Marshes head over to California, the episode turns Deliberately Monochrome for the rest of the first act.
  • Blatant Lies: Randy claiming to be attacked by a ghost and covered in ectoplasm, when he gets caught with his pants down.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Shelley is shown to be one in this episode, as she throws a fit about her mom telling her to get off the Internet and go to bed, as well as stealing Stan's Internet number to get ahead of him.
  • Butt-Monkey: Poor Stan, who doesn't even get a leading role in this episode, spends most of his screen time being punched by Shelley.
  • Caught with Your Pants Down: All of the travelers, even his family, caught Randy jacking off to extreme internet porn in the trailer house, covered in his own semen and trying to pass it off as ectoplasm.
  • Demoted to Extra: Cartman, Kenny, and Butters appear in this episode but have no lines.
  • Fetish: Randy has several disturbing attractions: bestiality, Japanese girls puking in each other's mouths, and Brazilian fart porn.
  • Foreshadowing: When we first see Kyle trying to use his computer, he says he's already tried unplugging and replugging his router. This is what he ends up doing to fix the internet as a whole.
  • Have You Tried Rebooting?: Kyle travels to the center of the internet and finds that it's just a giant router. He unplugs it and plugs it in again, and the internet starts running again.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Throughout the episode, Shelly won't stop talking about how madly in love she is with her online boyfriend, Amir, and bemoaning how she'll never see him again once the internet goes down. The two end up running into each other at the camp and can't even look one another in the eye, promising instead to talk online once they both get home.
  • Mundane Solution: The Internet is a giant router. Kyle fixes the connection by un plugging said giant router and plugging it back in again.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Randy's aforementioned jacking off to internet porn led to him using up all of the remaining internet connection.
  • Punctuated Pounding: Randy slams his hand during his speech.
Randy: But if we don't treat the internet with the RESPECT... that it deserves, then it may be gone forever.
  • Serious Business: In classic South Park fashion, everyone absolutely loses it when the internet goes out nationwide, with the Marsh family (as well as half of the country) traveling west to Silicon Valley and living in a refugee camp just to get 40 seconds of internet at a time.
  • Shout-Out: The government tries to communicate with the giant router via keyboard music, spoofing Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Randy tells one of the Government employees that he needs to use the internet because he hasn't jacked off in two weeks, said employee tells him to just jack off without it.
  • Take That!: Randy's speech (and outfit) is a spoof of Steven Seagal's infamous speech at the end of On Deadly Ground.
  • The Internet Is for Porn: One of the travelers offers an "Internet Porn Simulator" that displays drawings of porn in an empty computer screen, but Randy can't masturbate to it; he needs internet access to get off on porn.
  • Title Drop: Randy drops the title during his speech on internet usage.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To The Grapes of Wrath.
